I would give this place 4.5 stars if it was an option. The service was good. I was helped by someone who was passionate about snowboarding/skiing who actually wanted to teach me about everything down to what interests me to try and figure out what type of snowboard would suit me best. The service was awesome! I love passionate employees they are THE BEST. Also, the inventory was a bit slim when I visited in January, which the employees mentioned was a time when they are moving and have moved/sold most of their product for the season. Best ski shop in the area. Their youth ski rental program is great for kids who can take advantage. After taking advantage of the program for many years with both my boys, because my son is a harder than average skier, we decided he needed more aggressive equipment than was offered in the program. The Ski Company usually has a few pairs of higher end demo skis (very gently used factory demonstrators) available and that's what we opted to buy instead for a price well below list. I have also bought quite a few pairs of skis for myself based on thier recommendations, and couldn't be happier. Prices are always fair. This is the only ski shop I will buy from in MI. read more

Strongly recommend this place. The owner is 100% engaged in the daily business; participating in fitting and works in the back mounting bindings and tuning. My personal experience, as i frequently have purchased several pairs of skis, boots and clothing they appreciate when someone buys multiple items and discounted off sticker price. This is the absolute best ski store in the metro Detroit area! We live 40 minutes south and it is definitely worth the drive! Everyone there is awesome...Rich was especially helpful on today's visit--set my 13 year old up with this year's hard goods; she's sure to have a great season! As good as a ski shop in SE Michigan can get (ie, not ski country). The team is knowledgeable, and very hospitable. They have some sales, but thier normal pricing is about normal (unfortunately skiing has become almost unaffordable for many people). If you find a better deal on something, don't be afraid to mention it, there may be room in the price to meet it. read more

I called several (10+) ski shops trying to find the best ski boots I could given inventory was extremely low everywhere else I called. The Ski Company were able to fit me in for a boot fitting same day and had ski boots in stock! I worked with Mic(k?), the owner, and he was so knowledgeable and helped me find the perfect ski boot! I was also in a bind (excuse the pun) and he let me rent and borrow a pair of skis to use on a day trip to Pine Knob. I can't recommend this place enough. I may have bought my first skis in 1977 from MC Sports or something like that and have since always gone to a ski shop for my gear. The Ski Co. is one of the best out there. The staff is very knowledgable of the equipment they sell and they take the time to hear what kind of skier you are and recommend the proper gear. If your feet are not comfortable then you will hate skiing! Mick at The Ski Co. and some of their other staff are pros at tuning your boots. I have purchased 2 or 3 sets of boots here and always pay the extra $ to get custom footbed inserts. It presses your feet up into the top of the boot to get rid of any slop and stop your foot from moving forward and jamming your toes, that hurts! I have purchased skis, poles and garments here and have never been unhappy with the product or service received. If you are really into the sport don't waste your time at the big stores like MC, etc. go to a ski shop even if it is not The Ski Co. you will be glad you did. You may pay a bit more but in the long run you will be so happy! read more

I have been a customer for maybe 20 years, outfitted myself, my kids too; who are now grown. Both the owner and staff are great. I have directed many others to The Ski Company and have had only good response back. The rental program is great for when kids are growing like weeds, and by the time my kids had outgrown that and joined the high school ski race team he was the best source of equipment & knowledge I have found. I agree with another reviewer that I would give a rating of 10 stars if I could. This is a true specialty shop, they are into skiing and boarding and have all you need. You can buy stuff online or other general sports shops... but this is not generic stuff, the boot fit, adjustment, mounting of bindings and choosing from many types of skiis/boards; are all important and an expert guide here is crucial to fun, comfort, safety, etc.. If you are going out in the cold, out west, where warmth might be a long way away, getting the real winter clothing is crucial and my kids were addicted to the coats etc we bought here. Keeping warm makes for happy kids. read more

The most important aspect of ski equipment is your boots. If your feet aren't happy, you're not happy. We are recreational skiers who enjoy a week out west and the occasional weekend up north each year. One of our friends whose family have all been heavily involved in ski racing told us to go to Mark at The Ski Company for proper boot footing. Until then, we had never heard of this store, as we live some distance away and other stores are closer. I went 2 years ago - Mark spent well over an hour with me. I had several pressure points that had caused grief in the past, and my feet are a challenge because they are 1/2 size different. He patiently tried multiple types and added inserts, then took the best one and made adjustments to the shell and . After skiing on them for two years, they have been completely comfortable. What a difference from my old ones and also from the poor fitting you get when you rent. This year my wife was long overdue for new boots, so they were this year's Christmas present. Once again, Mark worked with her for well over an hour, trying not just different boots but different inserts and adjustments to get the best possible pair. She is delighted with how they fit. We live 15 miles away near several other ski shops. It is well worth it to drive to Rochester to work with people who truly know their product and are willing to take the time to help individual customers. I highly recommend The Ski Company for all your ski gear needs. By the way, I saw one other review on Yelp and when I read it it did not make sense. They made reference to the Manager as being "like 14 years old" and to another store in "Pittsford Plaza". Then I figured out they posted their review on the wrong store - they were writing about a place in Minnesota, not Rochester Michigan. read more

I spent over $1000 at the Ski company on skis, boots, poles, ski pants, gloves, helmets for the kids, goggles, etc. One of the poles bent within minutes during it's first use. I returned it to the store days after the purchase. The manager (who is like 14 years old) told me it was" user error". This is not true, but even if it was I spent $1000 at this store! They need to replace a $10 pole. I will spend my next $1000 someplace else next time. FYI, the place in Pittsford Plaza is owned by the same people. I will not shop there either. read more
