I had gone to three different dermatologists about a mole on my leg that looked suspicious to me over the past few years. Dr Singh was the first dermatologist to take my concern seriously. It turned out that I had another mole that needed to be excised on my back that I would not have noticed. That said, in my visits and procedures in this office, I have had nothing, but good experiences. From Dr Singh's bedside manner to scheduling and follow-up. I have been going here for years. Haley Thornton is great, but I can no longer deal with the lazy backroom office of this shady company. I recently changed health insurance (from one Blue Cross plan to another) so I checked with this office THREE DIFFERENT TIMES to make sure they were still in network and my skin check would be covered. I paid my $100 copay (which is already ridiculous for preventive care) and then Blue Cross said they were out of network and charged me an extra $150. I talked to several clueless front desk people and then a super rude woman in the billing department, who refused to charge me the out of pocket cost because it had already been billed to my insurance. So I have to pay $250 just to make sure I don't have skin cancer! Never again. (Sorry, Haley.) My advice? Don't trust these people. There are plenty of other dermatologists in the city who can actually do their due diligence when asked. read more

I've had the absolute worst service here! Bad cosmetic derm and insurance fraud! Not only are they pathologically late for every appointment, but after paying a ton for ablative laser, which did nothing for my scars and has left my skin painful even months later, I got a bill for the "free" cosmetic consultation! During that meeting, they suggested an Rx that may help and I said I'd think about it. They called it into my pharmacy! I let the pharmacy know I wasn't getting it and thought that was the end of it until I got a bill. I called to get it corrected and they said because they wrote an Rx it was now a medical appointment. I told the person I hadn't asked for it or picked it up. I was told they would look into it and get back to me. I heard the same on my 2nd call. No one ever got back to me. I reported them to the BBB, because this is FRAUD, plain and simple. Absolute worst place. A kid doctor runs into the room holds something up to my nose and tells me I don't have skin cancer on my nose. Then he tells me (why'll almost still running to come back for a full body scan, whatever that might be, kid doctor was in such a hurry he never explained. This was a total joke. The nurse was very kind. Other than that it's a joke there. I was In the office for probably 3 minutes. Wow. And to make it worse I paid my $20.00 co pay when the bill came in and now they're telling my I never paid it. Luckily I paid by check and have the canceled check but when I call billing to fix this I'm left on hold for long periods of time. Still haven't gotten thru to billing yet. I don't know w why they don't take the co pay like ALL OTHER DOCTORS OFFICES DO right when you check in. But this place is a mess from top to bottom. This kid doctor is a joke. The skin care center is a joke. The nurse was very kind. But this place is a shit hole. I called to get a prescription refill for a skin condition that has plagued me years. Initially, I visited Dr. Mark Berk back in March and did get the needed prescription. The skin condition has resurfaced 5 months later, in August. It hasn't been even a year since my last issue! Add to that that I am self pay. I cannot just slap down over a hundred dollars for the sake of their protocol that they can tick off another box for more money. If the condition I report now is the same I reported back in March and is also the same one I came in for a year or 2 before that, why do I have to come in again?! This is not my first rodeo. They treat only the symptom and never tell me the root cause. As a result, I am left with these disgusting nodules on my chin. Super unprofessional in my opinion to not just authorize a refill. I went to this derm group for 2 years. The long waits are not acceptable, the Dr Burke was ok, generally took care of my needs. The big issue I had was whe I went to them for facial treatments. they stated my insurance would defineately cover their expence, and I expected to have a co pay. However, they coded the treatment incorrectly and I was charged for the full amount. So I had to pay $750.00 for the 2 treatments they performed that they on numerous occasion stated I would be covered by my insurance. To make it worse they wouldnt even give me the rate my insurance company would have paid if they had coded the procedure correctly. Additionally, they refused to recode the claim. Not willing to help or work with me at all. There are too many other quality derm Dr's in the city to put up with this. If you are considering the Skin Car Center. I see that many people have experienced the same thing I have. The Skin Care Center has great doctors, but the organization and "customer service" of the nurses and office staff are lacking. I usually take all internet reviews with a grain of salt, but felt I needed to weigh in here too. Originally I started with Dr. Sanchez-Palacios and found her to be in a constant rush, talking over me, and generally lacking proper bedside manner. This included her having personal conversations with the nurse in the room while removing a mole. I didn't like her and asked that I never have to see her again. I wanted to see and saw when she was there, Dr. Jordan Carqueville. I found her to be extremely caring, knowledgeable, and on top of her game. Through two maternity leaves I went back to see her when possible. Now she has left and after seeing Dr. Berk, the owner of the practice, I have decided that there is no benefit to staying with this office. Dr. Berk is much like Dr. Sanchez-Palacios in that he is rushed and lacks bedside manner. He also openly questioned the treatment Dr. Carqueville had prescribed in front of me, even though it has worked and I have been doing it for a few years. I also find that when a prescription is needed or anything involving the nurses it takes multiple calls and speaking directly with the office manager to get anything done. It is interesting that with a 3-star review on here they are not more interested in patient feedback and improving. I am so happy to be wit ha practice now that can coordinate and get things done fast without all of the annoyance and drama. Again, these reviews can be taken with a grain of salt, but this experience has been the same for many and perhaps that shows a general trend and pattern. read more

One of the worst medical appointments I've ever had. I booked a new patient appointment with Dr. Carla Sanchez-Palacios. Before she arrived an assistant tried selling me $40 sunscreen they sell in the office. When the Dr arrived nearly 40 minutes after my scheduled appointment, she spent less than 5 minutes in the exam room, speaking over me, repeatedly asking me questions I'd already answered and then prescribed a medicine I'd already told her a previous doctor had prescribed that didn't work on my condition. She barely looked at my skin and never asked about other concerns or if I wanted cosmetic treatments before leaving. The assistant then handed me a brochure for an independent pharmacy where she was sending prescriptions, not the preferred pharmacy near my home. Thirty minutes later I got a notice my prescriptions were ready at a cost of nearly $160 dollars, prescriptions I had already been on previously that were covered by my insurance at no cost. I did not fill the prescriptions or book a follow up appointment. The entire experience was unprofessional and I would never recommend this practice. read more

I came as a new patient. When I called, I explicitly stated that I would like to come in for a preventive skin cancer screening, which is covered at 100% by my insurance. My appointment took about 15 minutes. A month later I get the bill, and call their billing department to get this amended. They obviously did not code it as preventive, since I am being charged. Their billing department has zero phone manners. Apparently, they "can't code as preventive or they don't get paid." I work in the insurance industry and can assure you, they get paid if they code preventive. I don't even mind paying the bill, but perhaps someone should have told me when I called and made the appointment and made it abundantly clear that I wanted to come in for a preventive visit that they do not code this way? Again, a brief apology on the phone with the billing department would have made this better, but I didn't get one. Poor manners and poor service. I can't honestly even speak to the level of care, because I came in for a quick appointment. But I can say that if you have the option to shop around for health care, I would shop somewhere else. Very displeased with my experience at The Skin Care Center. My appointment was with Dr. Sanchez who came in with three other women. They proceeded to all examine me at once, having conversations with each other and acting like I wasn't there. While I was turned on my stomach Dr. Sanchez noticed a mole she didn't like, and without any confirmation of how I'd like to proceed I felt the numbing shot and they scraped it off. The way they scraped it rather than doing an incision/stitches left a nasty wound that didn't heal for months and now is a large scar. I've had numerous moles removed in my life and have never experienced anything like this. Not to mention that the whole process cost me $1K and the mole was benign. read more

Although the front desk staff have always been polite. Can't say the same for the Doctors. We waited over a half hour for Doctor Sanchez. It wasn't even busy, she strolls in with no apology. My Daughter received a shot and didn't like the results. Switched to Doctor Burke he wasn't that much more punctual. Been coming here for many years and they are consistently 1 hour behind every time. I've seen two different doctors in this practice and both have felt rushed and not really able to dedicate time for me to talk to them. They haven't really taken some of my concerns seriously which is enough for me to stop coming. The waiting room gets very crowded and even during the pandemic there has been zero regulation for social distancing people. Today someone played videos on their phone without headphones while I waited 30 min after my appointment only to then sit in the room for another 30 minutes and that was the last straw for me. read more

Ugh where do I start... So, first you will wait and wait and wait and wait to be seen. I've even been what should have been the first appt of the day and waited an hour past my appt time. I could maybe deal with that if the overall service was good but sadly its not. I've seen a few different drs at this practice and experiences ranged from completely dismissive/dr barely looked at me to just an ok level of interaction. Dr. turnover rate seems high here. Nurses are not friendly or pleasant at all. They seemed annoyed to be at work. If you have a question they will be very irritated that they have to answer you. Dr. will spend MAYBE 5 minutes in the room with you (after you've waited an hour.) so you will have to ask the nurse questions if they stick around after the dr leaves. Front desk staff is also not very pleasant most of the time. And if you have a question for the dr after you leave OR need help with a prescription issue forget about ever hearing from the dr, nurse, or anyone. I'm pretty sure they just tell you they "sent the message" and didnt actually do anything. And they don't use email at all. I get the distinct impression that everyone in that office hates their job and hates me for making them do it. If you ever want them to get anything done for you, get ready to be your own doctor and drag them along every painful step of the way. Hilariously, ridiculously terrible. I thought I'd try going here because it's the closest dermatology office to my place and I thought I could tolerate bad receptionists as long as the doctors were good. Boy, was I wrong. I have never had a worse experience with people who purport to call themselves medical "professionals." The first thing that bothered me was that, walking through the hallways between rooms, the doctors and nurses stand in the hallway chatting and then act like YOU, the patient, are the one in the way when you say "excuse me." That was only the beginning, though. I have had to call the office at least a dozen times just to get ONE prescription filled. I get a different story from everyone I talk to about why it hasn't been filled yet. Further, if you want to talk to someone who actually has a clue about your treatment plan and isn't just giving you the first answer that comes to their mind, you'll have to wait ten minutes just to be asked to leave a message that will never get delivered to your provider. I will NEVER get their stupid hold music out of my head. Because of the medication I'm on, timing is essential or I won't be able to refill my prescription without another visit, and I feel like they intentionally drag their feet so I'll have to make another appointment and they can get more money from me. I thought I was a patient person, but I've reached my breaking point. Unless you're Mother Theresa or Ghandi and have an infinite source of inner peace and calm, I'd suggest looking elsewhere to avoid the stress and frustration of being a patient here. read more

I went to my annual screening appointment with a little skepticism after reading the reviews here. Had I read them before booking the appointment through my insurance, I honestly probably wouldn't have selected this location. I had my appointment today with Dr. Singh and my entire experience, from beginning to end, was honestly great. The portal activation link I'd received via email (to pre-fill out your paperwork and save time in the waiting room) expired and I wasn't able to get any of it done before arrival. They ask new patients to arrive 15 minutes early... I tried to get there early but ran a little late, and after reading the reviews I was sure I was setting myself up for a hefty wait time. My appointment was at 2:45pm. I filled out my paperwork (took 5 minutes) and as soon as I handed it back to the front desk I was called back to the exam room. The doctor assistant was lovely, very thorough and friendly. I waiting for about 15 minutes for the doctor (maybe a little less) and Dr. Singh was immediately very friendly, informational, non-judgemental and offered me great tips and advice while doing my screening. I was all set and done by 3:20pm. I'm sure depending on your visit reason the time and experience could vary but I definitely recommend Dr. Singh and will stick with him for my Dermatology needs! read more

Would not come back to this facility. I received my lab results back that came back abnormal. After reaching out to the physician, she stated my lab results were 100% fine. After telling her the ones that got flagged, she stated "they forgot to send it over." Not sure how that makes sense as she had told me my lab results were fine. I then receive another call from their office and they stated my lab results were fine, yet again. Incredibly frustrating and unprofessional institution. Would not recommend. read more

Terrible billing practices - I was referred to this office by my primary care doctor and saw Dr. Sanchez-Palacios over 3 years ago for a skin rash. She diagnosed the rash and prescribed a cream. While there, she noticed a scab from when I cut myself shaving - unrelated to the issue I was referred to this office for. She claimed it was a mole and offered to "freeze it off". She never told me it was going to cost $200. It wasn't even a mole, it was a scab. At the end of the appointment, I paid the $75 copay I was told I owe and left. Years later they're trying to claim I consented to the additional $200 procedure and threatening to turn me over to collections, for an issue I did not ask for help with and was not told I would be charged for. I've asked numerous times to dispute the charge and they always say I need to talk to the billing manager who is never available. I don't know what else to do to get rid of this unjust charge (that insurance even paid them a portion of! Just take what you got paid and stop coming after me!) read more

Dr. Berk was knowledgeable and helpful but the front office is unorganized. They scheduled a follow up appointment without telling me, only got a call 24 hours before to confirm. Then at the follow up appointment, I waited an hour and the nurses had no idea why I was there. Waited another 20 minutes for them to figure out why I needed a follow up. Then I got a phone call the next day saying I needed to come in for a follow up appointment--I said I just had my follow up appointment yesterday and the receptionist was very rude and replied "well it's up to you if you don't want to continue your treatment." Jen A. and Tina D., I had a similar experience in April with Dr. Sanchez-Palacios. I walked out of there a bit stunned and knowing that it was the worst dermatologist experience I've ever had. First time visit (I had to change dermatologists due to a change in my insurance). I told her about my skincare regime thus far and without discussing it, sharing her personal evaluation and suggestions, she immediately said you should go on Accutane. I said hold up, I'm not super comfortable with that, let's put it on the back burner and discuss other options and hear professional, medical analysis or opinion. (By the way, my skin is pretty darn clear, I'm in my 30s and those who know me whom I've told about this interaction had a shocked reaction). But no, she wasn't much of a talker except to state some facts about Accutane and keep bringing it up. I would ask her point blank questions on other non-Acctuane topics and I never got a straight response. It was like she was performing in a play and the only line she could remember was the suggestion of Accutane, so she just kept repeating it. I got pretty annoyed after awhile and asked what was up? Are you selling this product?? Other than that she seemed kind of out of it. Made a few other suggestions re: topical products and noted that they were similar to what I already use. What is the difference then, I ask. She shrugged and could not answer the question. I had to lead the entire appointment and got NOWHERE because she didn't listen or communicate normally at all. I got some refills on old scripts and took that as the accomplishment of the appointment. Update: Turns out she only gave me one refill (vs the 5 she told me she was writing). read more

I attended twice this practice. In spite of being on time to my appointment I had to wait outside and then i had to wait inside once they took me into the consulting rooms. Doctors were not warm nor took the time to listen to what I had. On my second visit the doctor was not even aware that it was a follow up visit. The result is that a year later my issue has not been solved. almost a year later I get their first bill in the mail with a threat that it will be taken to the collectors department. I took the time to call and clarify that this was the first notice I had received, the phone was answered by a stoic woman with an accent who could not care less that I had taken the time to clarify an error. She simply replied that they had sent 5 noties and said "call us when you are ready to pay" (we know where the heart of this practice is...). This was the same treatment I got in the office. I was hesitant to come here based on the mixed reviews (the good, the bad and the ugly). I think part of the reviews are related to which specific doctor you choose. I'm happy to say my review falls into the 'good' category - I saw Dr. Berk. So I called to make an appointment and was scheduled the following week - they scheduled me early so I wouldn't miss so much work. Got an email requesting I fill out all the new patient forms (which saved me a lot of time in the office) and sent me an email reminder asking me to respond if I still wanted to keep my appointment (if you miss your appointment - you are charged anyways - so I thought the reminder certainly helped). I arrived for my appointment right on time and one of the receptionist checked me in very quickly (note - these are not the happy bubbly receptionist types with a big plastic smile on their face - they are to the point, but are very professional and busy). One thing that really irks me about doctor visits are when you show up on time, then it's a long wait in the waiting room and then after they put you in one of the medical rooms, there's another long wait. I did not have that experience. I was in the medical room about 10 minutes after I arrived. A medical assistant quickly asked me a few questions. And Dr. Berk walked in less than 5 minutes later. So far so good. Dr. Berk listened to me and why I was there (to have some skin tags around my eye to remove). For a quick background, I am VERY cynical when it comes to docs - so I was suspecting that he would check me out, then ask me to come back again for the procedure in order to rack up 2 office visit fees. But no. Dr. Berk told me he could numb the area, snip it off, did I want to do it right then. Love it. Because it was near my eye, I had to keep my eye closed. What I really appreciated was Dr. Berk told me everything he was doing since I couldn't see during the whole process. From "i'm going to disinfect the area with some gauze" to "It looks great, I'm putting a small band aid on now." I was in and out of there in only like 30 minutes and no useless follow-up appointment needed (again those office fees I hate). So my experience was better than I expected, and again, if you are considering this practice, just read through the reviews like I did and it will be very apparent which doctor(s) to avoid and which to trust. read more

I've always thought this was a well run practice. You can read my five star review of Dr. Carqueville. Unfortunately, she's leaving. The staff failed to give her a message from me, and evasively said she's "moving out of state." That's not exactly wrong, but not completely true. She's taking a dermatological surgery fellowship in Washington, but plans to return one week a month to see patients. She doesn't know where yet, but it won't be with Skin Care Center. I never write reviews but my experience today was really frustrating so I am writing one. I found the front desk staff and the nurse who initially saw me in the room to be nice and helpful. They said I was covered by insurance, which I'm really hoping is true now that I'm seeing a lot of reviews that say folks got a surprise bill months later... I saw Dr. Sanchez-Palacios and I think she talked over every single sentence that came out of my mouth. I literally don't think she heard anything I said. It felt like I was an inanimate object, and she was just talking to the nurse about me and not to me, the patient who was literally right there. I have never felt so unheard in a doctor's office. She would ask a question, and I would begin to answer, and she would just keep talking? It was honestly really bizarre and uncomfortable. I could not get a word in edgewise at my own doctor's appointment. At best, I feel like I wasted my time; at worst, I feel a little dehumanized. read more

$850 billed for simple mole removal (2 benign moles), for which the Dr. was in the room about 5 minutes. Even after insurance, my bill was over $400 for the medical visit, 2 "surgeries", and pathology. The Dr. wants to see me again in a year. Not sure why, probably just to bill me another $250 for a "Medical Visit" and breathing their air. Will not return, and would not recommend a facility that financially exploits patients getting a simple and quick procedure done. read more

I have to tell you, Dr. Carla Sanchez is the best Dr. I have ever been to in my life. She is fabulous. Check out my profile, I'm not someone who heaps praise on everyone. Cy's Crab House and the post office in 60622 are still reeling from the aftershocks of my review beat-downs. First of all, the office is a really cool place in an accessible neighborhood. The staff, especially a woman named Kristen, is so accommodating. Unlike medical offices I have worked with in the past, these people are very engaging, patient-oriented and kind. I had an issue recently and this office - especially Kristen - really made my life a lot less complicated. First star. I think the world of Dr. Carla, she's a gem of a nice person. She's also a pretty straight forward, brilliant, honest Doctor. There have been times when she asks if I'm using my medication as much as I should, I lie, and she gives me the eye (just ONE lie God, before I die, let me PLEASE GET AWAY WITH ONE LIE). A nice, friendly eye, but there's a little bit of "get your act together Derek" in there as well. Friendly honesty and straight forwardness - 2nd star. On my first visit, Dr. Carla nailed the prescription. No phone calls for emergency appointments, no switching medications. She crushed it, first time. 3rd star. No billing issues ever. No hidden fees. No 30 minute waits in the waiting room. 4th star. There is no stress for me in visiting this office. I know the staff will be friendly, the wait will be minimal, Dr. Carla will listen to what I say and have a pleasant, approachable personality. 5th star. read more

If I am coming to you, a dermatologist, with any ailment-errant mole, dry skin, persistent breakouts-chances are that A. I am either worried or self conscious about it and B. I want your sincerity and compassion when providing treatment. However, every time I came here, I was met with the opposite. Dr. Carla Sanchez-Palacio is probably good at what she does in a technical sense, but her bedside manner is anything but impressive. In fact, its quite dismissive. They are known as one of the best dermatology places in the city, and based on my sub-par experiences at most, perhaps they are. But something tells me not. If you are into the med-spa and expensive treatment facial treatment, this is probably the place for you. But if you are into holistically treating your skin and receiving attentive care, this probably isn't. read more

Not good. I began treatment with Dr. Carqueville in May for itchy spots that appeared on my hands, arms and legs. After several weeks the treatment had no positive effect and my condition actually worsened with the appearance of a rash on my hands so I contacted the office for another appointment and learned that she was no longer with the center. Dr. Berk then took my case and prescribed the same treatment that Dr. Carqueville had used. I questioned why he thought it would work this time when it hadn't worked before, but I received no encouraging response from him. Not only did it not work but a boil appeared on my thigh. I saw Dr Berk a second time and he ordered a biopsy of the boil and a steroid injection. That was the last time I saw Dr. Berk. He turned my case over to the nurse practitioner whom I saw several weeks later since his second treatment was also ineffective. I had two more visits with the practitioner extending into October which resulted in more biopsies and a treatment for scabies which they later concluded I didn't have. I was offered another steroid shot which I firmly declined. I expressed frustration that after 5 months of treatment I was in the same condition I was when I saw them the first time in May. My guess is they were probably happy when I told them that it was pointless to continue any further treatment with them. They got the bucks and I still have the itch I came in with 5 months earlier. read more

I had a terrible bout of dry, itchy winter skin, probably due to the horror that was Chiberia. However it didn't seem to improve with the change in weather so I booked an appointment at The Skin Care Center. What a fantastic experience! Everyone was so kind and pleasant, from the receptionist up front, to the nurses, and the great dermatologist. The doctor saw me right on time, and after thirty minutes I was out the door and went to pick up my prescription. And four days later...no more itching and my skin is all clear! read more

I had a great experience with Dr. Berk today. I was able to make an appointment withing a couple weeks of calling, and I was in and out in less than an hour. Dr. Berk is one of those old school doctors, direct and to-the-point, and his communication is clear, which is what I need because I can be less-than-focused. He is a likable person. I especially appreciated that everyone was friendly and inviting and the P.A. even stopped in to meet me while I was on my way out. I arrived 2 hours early. Is that not so ridiculous and equally annoying? Blech. I decided to stop in and fill out all the paper-work and then maybe go grab some lunch. Turns out, they had some wiggle room to fit me in, COOL! Filled out paperwork, settled my co-pay, and within 10 minutes I was seen. I met with a cheery nurse (I think or tech) named Lindsey. She got all the stats about why I was seeing the doctor. Etc...now down to the knitty gritty: The front desk staff ARE unprofessional. They are how can I say, very unrefined. I felt like I was in a high school girl's locker-room. However, to their credit, the front desk ladies are nice. The office manager is nice as well, but I would say she needs more management training (not letting the girls talk about inappropriate topics, curse, etc) and the way they schedule appointments aren't always accurate. Met with doctor Berk. He seemed concerned, but was super quick to write a few scripts. I am currently scheduled for a vitalize peel (got a bad surge of acne lately...hmmm....) Will give an update. I'm crossing my fingers that all goes well. Note: There are apparently 3 locations, which makes it difficult to get an appointment here, but it seems that they really know their stuff. I've been coming to Skin Care for years and I received proper care from Dr. Berk however few months ago I came to see Dr. Sanchez. I realize they have had long day, several patients however quality of care is lacking. I had milia under my eyes, wanted to know what she thought, hear all possible treatments costs then decide. They do not give these options without asking. I told her the condition I thought I had and she wasn't sure and only offered a cream and said she would only remove one milia due to scarring and it was $150 for one. I had to ask how much it was, that wasn't given to me. They don't do laser treatments etc or it wasn't offered. read more

The worst customer service and front desk medical team I have ever come across. Put patients on hold for excessively long times. Then when they do answer they are aggressive and off putting and that is the face of the practice. read more
