Dr. Obenchain herself is excellent--professional, knowledgeable, and someone I trusted for my care…read moreover the past three years. Unfortunately, the billing office completely undermines that experience. After a routine visit on March 19, I received a bill right before leaving for a family vacation (April 3-17). When I returned, my entire family came down with COVID, which delayed me from going through my mail. As soon as I reviewed it, I immediately called and paid the balance on May 1. Despite that, I received a letter from the billing office claiming no payment had been made and stating I would now be required to pay in full at the time of service. The tone was unnecessarily harsh and accusatory, especially given my consistent history of paying my balances over the past three years. Including a policy as if I were unaware or negligent felt condescending and completely disregarded the reality that sometimes life happens. There was no attempt at understanding--just a blanket, impersonal response. It's unfortunate because the quality of care from the doctor is not reflected in how patients are treated on the administrative side. In the end, the billing office's approach was enough for me to take my care elsewhere. If you choose to go here, be aware: the medical care may be great, but the billing experience can leave a very different impression.

Wonderful business owners. Great place for dental cleaning. Staff needs more training with people…read moreskills, and denture fitting.

Once again I find myself visiting my favorite dentist. Not a planned visit This time it was…read moreaccidental. Lane was able to put me on a cancellation list and I scheduled a firm appointment in one week. I looked at the word acci-DENTAL and indeed that is what happened. I'll get back to this word later ... I am currently in physical therapy for balance. Apparently I need more sessions. Last weekend I lost my balance and landed on my left side on the floor after hitting the left side of my face on the corner of our coffee table. Our Chihuahuas sprang into action. Each one on a separate mission. Belle jumped on my legs and stared at me. Daisy Mae started licking my face. Itty-Bitty (Rosa Lee) took it as her responsibility to jump around me and kept running back to Bev to alert her. Cindi Lou Barked continuously as she wanted in on this new game ... "FALL". I was able to lift myself up. Checked myself out... no bleeding. That's a good sign. Then the pain arrived. Shooting pain from my left jaw up to my left ear. Bev took me to the ER. CT SCANS DONE and nothing was broken. Or so I thought. The throbbing continued. My tongue touched a tooth and I knew that was broken. Pain Origin solved. The ER started me on an antibiotic and Motrin. Lane called me and told me there was an opening the next morning 8:00am. I said, "yes!" That is how I landed in my favorite dentist's chair. Each time I go to my dentists I feel so welcome and loved. The kindness touches my heart always. Tayla called me to the back and took X-rays of the troublesome tooth. Yep it was a mess. Dr Andrea comes in a confirms that tooth is bad. It needs to come out. There is no saving it. I was thrilled. For the amount of pain it was causing me all weekend I wanted it out. The tooth had other ideas .... It wanted to stay inside of me. It was not so willing to pop out. Between the infected tooth or the trauma on my left side of my face from the fall ... the numbing potion Dr Andrea gave me was not catching all the pain. It radiated up to my brain.. down to my throat and in my ear. The pain came out of my eyes in tears. I wanted to be numb from my shoulders to the tallest strand of my hair. I knew that was not possible. Once the tooth was out...relief came suddenly. I had enough numbing potions in my head to keep me numb for a month. Ice, milkshakes, Motrin, antibiotic and gauze was my recovery plan. There is a bit of information I want to leave you with... when you are on a strong antibiotic and you get thrush .... Do not eat any...I mean ANY pineapples! It feels like a firecracker went off in my mouth. My primary physician ordered me an Anti-fungal for my mouth. It put the fire out. I'm thinking Dr Andrea was more relieved than I was to know I was OK. Now to get back to the word "ACCIDENTAL" it was very fitting that the "accident" caused "dental" injury. If you are looking for a fabulous dentist. Check out Murrells Inlet Dentistry. Tell them Willie sent you. Bring Donuts! I took a photo of where it hurts.

I had to wait 2 weeks for appointment (told them I had a tooth cracked) which I understand the wait…read morebut then when I arrived 15 mins late because I entered their business in google & it led me a wrong place, they all had an attitude when I walked in & told me they gave my appointment to someone else... they seemed to not even want to see me at that point & barely looked at me while I stood there wondering what to do & the woman said we will see what we can do like my appointment was in question... I could feel their annoyance which was a bit over the top... you can still politely tell someone I'm sorry but you were late.. but they treated me like I just did something bad on purpose ... The girl Sarah (at the end of my 5 minute appointment) went to set up another appointment with me & asked how I was as she looked away to type & I just politely said I was okay just a little upset that I took the whole day off & whoever booked me on the phone said they would block extra time for me knowing it was more of a serious issue that my tooth cracked .. Then she told me she was the one who booked it & got defensive. ( I was actually willing to let it go but I just wanted to express a little disappointment) she proceeded try & shame me for being late & I said I didn't do it on purpose you must know this is an issue with the address & she kept saying well I shouldn't have been late if I wanted to be treated today & that she only blocked off an hour (which I would have also appreciated her telling me that on the phone when I asked how long should I block off for the appointment & she said she wasn't sure how long it would take so I just took the whole day off work smh) then she said I should have called to let them know I was running late if I wanted to get helped today.. but I told her I was driving on the highway and didn't want to get in an accident......l had to pull over off the highway stressed trying to find their other address & the next one was right not the one that first came up on google.. I told her I didn't like how she was speaking to me & was trying to stay calm but she started overtalking me in a condescending tone & we were both getting louder... she was saying they have been there for 30 years & it's not their problem but google's problem ect... I said excuse me I need to finish my sentence because she wouldn't let me finish... she was being very rude & I told her she was being rude as she had a smirk on her face... So, I had to pay $128 out of pocket just for a 5 minute session today where they took like 2 xrays of just the one tooth & that's all we did & I lost money calling out of work today too.. wasted my time making me wait 2 weeks for nothing, I could have gone to a better dentist office that would have helped me sooner.. the girl who took my X-rays today was very nice & caring making sure she was gentle while taking X-rays but the office is not friendly... I have to say in the past I really loved Dr. Ballangee she's great but I am going to a new dentist office as of tmrw I already got an appointment when I told them my situation... wow people who actually care unlike how I was treated here... this is the second time I was treated so rudely by staff here.. last time a dental hygiene routine was terrible the girl was angry & kept hurting me with sharp instruments forcefully, & splashing water up my nose & all over my face carelessly looking away then noticed she was squirting up my nose & said oh sorry, apathetically... it made me not even want to come back but I gave it a second chance here today because my tooth cracked & then because the confusing address thing they hated me as soon as I walked in ... there is truly no need to be so rude, condescending, & accusatory to people... I spoke to my family about what happened & they called our dental hygienist friend who referred me to another office so I am not returning here..some staff are very rude but some are very nice too but I don't have time to play Russian roulette with my money and time not knowing how they will be.

The quality of care, in my opinion as a 71 year old physician who has seen a lifetime of dental work, seems to be substandard. I rarely give poor reviews unless I feel that others well benefit from them as any business can have a bad day, or individuals can make mistakes, or so often poor reviews really reflect the biases and quirks of the reviewers. Google Aspen Dental and lawsuits and you will find that they have paid out millions of dollars in class action claims for the very sorts of practices we encountered. Our visit, which was just to establish care and get xrays lasted 2 1/2 hours. We waited 45 minutes to be seen, then my daughter waited another hour in the chair without being seen. I asked the receptionist if our wait was excessive and got the terse reply of "no", and "we are busy today". There were two other patients in the waiting room. The hygienist, who was the only person who made eye contact with either me or my daughter, stated that they were short staffed that day. Yet we could have been told this upfront and given the chance to reschedule. The receptionist, in her terse manner, had indicated that we weren't told this as such waits are not unusual for them. My daughter was told that all four of her wisdom teeth had to be removed. She has no pain, no impaction, the wisdom teeth are not crowding other teeth and no explanation was given for why they had to be removed. Our dual insurance was to be charged $6000 and we were expected to pay $1500 for what insurance would not cover. Aspen is in network for both our insurance companies, one of which is Blue Cross. Several studies of dental care document that it is common for one dentist to recommend extensive care such as removing otherwise healthy wisdom teeth whereas another dentist might simply closely monitor the teeth. There is a wide range of opinions for dental work and anyone going to Aspen should get a second opinion. A common tactic by unscrupulous and predatory dental practices is to overcharge insurance companies and then bill the patient for the excess. The purpose of seeing in network providers is to avoid these types of excessive charges. Blue Cross and others, when designating a practice as "in network" is an effort to prevent their consumers from being hit with these unethical but not illegal practices. Aspen Dental recently settled a class action suit for such predatory billing practices, but as the fine was only 3.5 million dollars, perhaps they see this as simply the cost of doing business. We were then told my daughter required deep gingival cleaning by the dentist. We were asked to pay 60% up front, even though both our insurances pay for such care and Aspen is in network for both of them. The hygienist apologetically told us that perhaps deep cleaning wasn't needed at all and that we could have our money refunded if it wasn't necessary when she presented for the work to be done. Aspen declined to discuss any of their billing practices with us, even the most common questions such as "how much is my insurance company going to pay" and we were told that they wouldn't bill our secondary insurance at all but that we could submit the bills after the fact and that the insurance company might reimburse us. The point of being in network is to avoid that sort of cumbersome process which can be difficult to get properly reimbursed. It is not surprising with such a predatory tone and seemingly unethical and poor communication and office organization in an office, that the employees seem very unhappy. In turn, they do not make eye contact, rarely smile, are terse in their comments and opaque when questioned on the most routine questions. Certainly that was the case at the Murrell's Inlet Aspen office where it appeared no one there wanted to be there. After spending 2 1/2 hours at Aspen for a visit that should have been 30 minutes at any other office, we clearly got the idea that these employees are embarrassed to be working there and very unhappy. In the Murrells Inlet area we have many many choices for dental care. For example, we go out of network to go to South Strand Dental. With the sort of predatory pricing seen at Aspen, it is actually cheaper for us to go out of network, which is precisely NOT the way the system is supposed to work.
