Ribs were amazing. The greens get my approval. I really enjoyed my experience here. They have an outside eating area. Very good!

Much needed food spot in Northside right in the corner of BPB and North Avenue. A few off street parking spaces, a patio and ample indoor space as well, including a small bar with alcohol! Stopped in for a breakfast bowl and was a little disappointed. It took about 15 minutes to get it even though they weren't very busy, and the potatoes tasted like they had been sitting out for a while. Not fresh. And overcooked as well. The added chorizo was a little sour spicy. Presentation was lacking. My favorite thing here has been the overnight oats and the avocado toast that I used to get from the old location. I'll go back to that. Great spot to park with coffee and your laptop. Very glad they're here.

I'm on the hunt for the best breakfast burrito in Richmond, so I had to try The Smoky Mug. We visited on Labor Day morning, and it was very busy with families, which was a good sign. Even though we had to wait in a long line, it was bearable thanks to the beautiful mural on the main wall and the many plants throughout the restaurant. The staff were super friendly and moved through the line quickly. We ordered the breakfast burrito with eggs, hatch green chiles, cheese, and their homemade tortilla. We added bacon for some extra crunch. Our food took about 20 minutes, but we understood since it was so busy. The burrito was well-seasoned and soft, but also had a nice crunch and lots of cheese. There were plenty of different textures and flavors. It was a good size for the price, and I was very satisfied. Overall, The Smoky Mug scores high on the breakfast burrito scale, and I'll definitely be back to try their BBQ.

Another great coffee house with amazing breakfast burritos, cozy seating so you can linger, they serve lunch and they have outdoor seating to enjoy the weather. They even have options for kids which is rare at a coffee house.

I love the new space but on a weekend it was chaotic and crazy. They need to work on their system to bring the food out. Maybe give people numbers on their table or something. The food came out and wasn't labeled and the drink came out way after the food that being said, it was a very good coffee and unique flavors and the breakfast burritos were incredible. They have a nice outdoor space and it is dog and kid friendly. They do have a bar and some good drinks on tap as well.

Update: their new location is absolutely stunning inside. They have really stepped their food and coffee game up. I'd say I'm basically a fan!

Visited the new location on 8/22/25. The inside space is to die for - the wall mural is absolutely stunning and they decorated with such tasteful and comfortable furniture. Since opening the new space, they're still working out a few kinks, but that didn't change this visit still being absolutely spectacular and amazing. To note as of 8/22/25 - the website states the lunch and dinner menu is served after 11:30am, but when we came (4:30/5pm on a Friday), they were only serving the happy hour food menu. I'm not sure if this was a one time thing or will be this way long term. Regardless, the HH menu prices are fantastic. The street style tacos are not too small and you get two for $5. My only complaint is they were all a little dry and could have used crema or another condiment in addition to the green sauce. The smoked wings - AMAZING. Sooo tender, meat fell off the bone, amazing flavor, and pairs perfectly with the house made ranch. The nachitos bowl was the perfect size - not too big or small. Can't wait to come back as they continue to get in a groove!

The new space is AH-MAZING! Super spacious, a parking lot & a patio. The coffee & breakfast muffins are still delicious. Already loving the bar menu as well.

The Smoky Mug is as must visit when in Brookland Park. The people are great, the food is good, and the vibe is amazing. This coffee BBQ hybrid is a fun concept. Upon entering, you walk into the cafe side, if you go further down, you'll enter the BBQ side. There is seating in the cafe side and then outdoor seating available under a big tarp. There are a lot of options for seating. As for parking, there is free parking nearby and as well as bike parking or bus options. Whenever I'm taking pottery classes at Hand/Thrown I like to visit the Smoky Mug for a little treat. They have a selection of teas, fun coffees, and a chai lattes. I hope they offer Matcha Lattes one day. Their food portions are super generous here. And the meats are quite yummy. Do know they're greasey, but that's the point!! The best thing I've ever ordered here was the Sopapilla with brisket which was a Duke's Hot Tomato Summer special. I highly recommend checking out The Smoky Mug.

My meal was okay. I got a chicken salad sandwich and was disappointed to see that my toasted bun was actually cold. It did get eaten tho as I was starving. I wish it had more to it as I was still hungry after eating my entire sandwich. The smoked chicken salad was really yummy. I was disappointed to hear they didn't have any regular chicken left. We were not the biggest fans of the Mac and cheese and the brisket was a bit tough for our liking but it got the job done for the time being. Their house made mustard is bomb!! I also tried to get a receipt printed and the machine bugged out and I was sent to the other side of the bar and the person on the other side sent me back and no one ever got me my receipt and I was just kinda standing there without anyone addressing me for a while. So all in all the service wasn't great. The food was ok. I probably wouldn't come back but I'm happy to have tried it. It seemed very white washed to say the least. We need to break out of idealizing Eurocentric culture. I did noticed they have a happy hour. I may try that one day if I happen to be in the area, but I wouldn't race back to it if you know what I mean. We'll see.

    Beautiful New digs.

Smoky Mug has a new gorgeous location, one block from old location. Still has a patio. Went to try breakfast burrito with bacon and green chile. Almost up to New Mexico standards. Other breakfast sandwiches and baked goods. Large area to order at counter. Seasonal Coffee specials not tried. Brewed coffee could have been hotter.

We stopped for a quick breakfast and this place was perfect! I got the breakfast burrito with bacon and a dirty chai latte. The burrito was so delicious and everything tasted good quality and fresh. The bacon was nice and crispy. The latte is amazing and not too sweet. There's lots of outdoor seating and a few seats inside. The decor is very welcoming and cozy. All the staff were super friendly! Stop by The Smoky Mug for a nice, cozy, quick breakfast!

The meats here were very good - extremely tender with a nice smoky flavor. I was personally a huge fan of the spare ribs and my girlfriend loved the prime rib (which I have never seen at a BBQ place before!). The sides were a bit lackluster and just ok, but service was friendly. While a bit pricey, I would definitely come back just for the meats! Meats: Brisket, Prime Rib, Pork Spare Ribs and Sausage Links Sides: Jalapeño Mac and Cheese, Potato Salad and Collard Greens

First, let me preface this by saying that I grew up in North Texas for the majority of my life…read more Second, I've had a LOT of BBQ during that time. Well known standards from the area including Angelo's, Railhead, Heim's, Cousin's, and a lot of old places that are no longer in existence. Each one offering its own spin on a Texas standard. Upon moving to Virginia, I hadn't ventured out to any of the BBQ joints, but one of my associates from the office would often talk about ZZQ. I had assumed that Virginians had a concept of BBQ that was akin to shredding some meat and pouring BBQ sauce on it. So, I finally had the courage to visit ZZQ a few weeks ago to pick up an order to go. I arrived just before opening time on a Saturday morning. There was a line that extended just down to the street. Probably 40 feet or so. Figured this would go pretty quickly once the doors opened. I was wrong. After 15 minutes, I had only moved about 5 feet. The line was building behind me, but simply appeared to have gotten stuck somewhere in front of me. After about 40 minutes, I had finally made it to the front door. Inside, there was another line up to the cutters. There were menus to peruse and a large sign with all the cuts and sides you could think of. A great variety. As I got closer to the front, I realized that it wasn't the cutters causing such a slow procession, but the customers. As I listed to them talk, most seemed to have absolutely no clue what they wanted at all. Did I mention the menus and billboards? They seemed to want to chat about food and prep more than just order. Had this been in Texas, the mob of a line would have escorted you out. When you get to the cutters, you know what you want. No time to dilly-dally. I got up to the cutter and placed my order. I was getting a variety, so I went for 1/2 a chicken, 1.5 lbs of sliced brisket, a couple of sausages, mac and cheese, cole slaw, and sauces. The cutter gave me a chunk of the brisket. Definitely moist, a bit overly fatty, but tasty. Their idea is the "meat has enough flavor so that you don't need sauce." He also mentioned they smoke with oak wood. Good to know. The taste is good. Probably as close to a Texas style as you can get, but with some small exceptions. Mesquite wood is often used in Texas for smoking. Plentiful, but obviously costly to transport outside of Texas. It has an exquisite flavor that is just right for BBQ. The second is the sauce. I like sauce...GOOD BBQ sauce! Unfortunately this is where ZZQ falls short. I didn't care for their sauce at all. Too vinegary and liquidy for the lighter sauce, and too heavy with molasses with the other one. So, I had to make do an whip up a small batch of homemade sauce at home that helped to bring it together. All the folks at ZZQ made it for a nice experience. Definitely customer oriented and friendly. I think the BBQ is as close to Texas-style as you can find in these parts, but kind of a miss on the sauce. Still, I can either make my own or buy a bottle at the local store if I want. Definitely worth a try, but you will need patience with a barrage of people who clearly have a lot of questions about BBQ.
