Visiting from San Diego and kind of on a BBQ crawl this was our 4th BBQ spot on this trip and was easily our favorite. I ordered a half slab of ribs,2 brisket sammies and their loaded fries with brisket. Everything was exceptional the brisket was so tender it melted in your mouth and the prices were super reasonable for what you get very generous servings. No place within 120 mls comes even close to this in San Diego and there's a place called Heritage BBQ in San Juan Capistrano that somehow got ranked very highly by Teacas monthly that has a line down the street that charges more that doesn't come close to this place. TLDR; so good we went two days in a row! The trainwreck bowl gives you everything you need to satisfy your barbecue craving. Vibe - we ordered takeout which was super easy and quick! The restaurant is a good size with plenty of space to sit and eat. Food - we ordered two trainwreck bowls which come with a generous portion of Mac and cheese, beans, cornbread and protein. It's the perfect mix! For meat we ordered one with chicken and one with brisket. The brisket is delicious with an ever so slight kick. If you have a very low spice tolerance, consider the chicken! Went for a scheduled wedding tasting and arrived a tad early.. they offered us complimentary beverages which we just were fine with water. However, they had a private little dining area ALL SET UP. With a display and options it was awesome. Then Niki came out just explained the process and let it just be relaxing. THEN, the food!! Oh wow, first off the display was incredible. Most things they gave us an abundance to try. (Don't worry, I'll post pics;)) anyways by the end she just gave us all the numbers and we put the deposit down to reserve our special day. I had the Catfish sandwich with mac and cheese. My sons had pulled chicken, the brisket sandwich, and also the smoked sausage. Mac and cheese passed my test. It was creamy and cheesy. Needed salt and pepper. It was good for restaurant stove top mac and cheese. The catfish needed to be crispier. It tasted fine in general, but the breading was mushy in the creases. Their tarter sauce was delicious. I wish the sandwich had come with lettuce and tomato. The smoked sausage was just average. The pulled chicken also just average. Nothing special here, unfortunately. We ordered 1 lb brisket, 1/3 pound sausage, and sweet potatoes, mac and cheese, coleslaw, and cornbread as sides. Food was more than enough for 2 people, we ended taking the rest to go. Let me start off by saying that I'm originally from Boston, so I haven't had much experience with bbq, but this place has the best brisket sandwich I've had in RVA. When I entered I was immediately greeted by a very friendly staff. I decided to try the brisket sandwich, which came highly recommended, but got my cole slaw on the side, along with a side of mac and cheese, and of course, a sweet tea. The tea had unlimited refills, and I actually blended the sweet and unsweetened teas together (I'm still getting used to the sweet tea!). The sandwich was so moist that it didn't even need sauce! I did try a taste of the sweet sauce, which was too sweet for my liking and the mild sauce, which I liked much better. The cole slaw was tasty, and the mac and cheese, although very cheesy, lacked flavor. I added a bit of the mild bbq sauce to it, and it was much better. "Deep Run Roadhouse" can give Texas BBQ a run for its money. It's close to it in every way. After settling in to our hotel, we looked for a place for dinner. This place came strongly recommended by Yelpers, so it was the perfect spot for me. Outside, the parking lot is pretty big, but packed so get there early. The outside promotes the grandeur of what was inside. Inside seemed dated, but that's the look they wanted, an old school in your face bbq! At the counter, we were served by Post Malone, no, but he looked strongly like him. They had fun entertaining us while we made our picks. Even one of the cooks came out and told me he was a Giants fan. This was the first place I visited in the area that took Apple Pay, so that was a plus. We placed our order and they gave us an alarm that would let us know when the food was ready. We sat down at the tall wooden booths and waiting. It was worth the wait because the food came out hot. We sat down and began eating. I must say, Post Malone recommended the mushrooms so I tried them. He said they were for vegetarians that came (hold up! Why would vegetarians come to bbq?). Bright, clean with a well decorated typical BBQ vibe restaurant atmosphere. There's around 7 booths within the restaurant so I suspect it might be difficult to dine in over the weekend dinner times. The smoked meats which I tried were very good. The brisket and pulled pork were moist and tasty. If ordered as a sandwich the bun is dense and hardy and will make a nice meal accompanied with a side. Speaking of sides, the four that I sampled were basic and standard, so there's nothing to brag about. It is nice to see that they serve hush puppies since some restaurants don't offer that selection. The service was polite and pleasant. You basically order at the counter and either wait for your name to be called or when busier they will provide a buzzer to alert you when your food is ready. This past visit I had the fried catfish which is perfectly cooked and crunchy with the best tartar sauce I've ever had. They don't honor their own posted hours, and could not care less if you just blew half an hour driving to get to their restaurant in driving rain or snow. Doesn't matter how good the food may be if you can't get any, and I've never been treated so rudely by the folks over at Q. I needed meat for a stew, called over, got told they were closing at 2 for snow. Fine, drove across town, got there twenty minutes beforehand, got told they were closed and wouldn't sell me any meat because their kitchen was shut down. Anyone who's ever smoked meat knows that's a lie; you cook it the night before. So they got me to waste an hour driving back and forth in the snow and then wouldn't take thirty seconds to pull some brisket out of the fridge and put it in a cup for me to buy, twenty minutes before the closing time on their door. read more

I think I have tried just about everything on the menu over the years. It is all amply portioned and delicious. I love that they offer fish, because I sometimes need a fish taco fix when my boys want their brisket fix. We order from DRR about once each month, and we recently used them to cater our son's class reunion, a backyard event for about 60 people. The food, service, set up, and willingness to honor my 10% off coupon was amazing. They make everything turn-key. What a steal! Got a bbq pork sandwich with slaw and a small collard greens for $11. Forger Arby's. DRR got the meats! I couldn't believe how good my pulled pork was. Far from dry, but definitely not wet, it was the perfect texture. Bun held up to the coleslaw and cherry bourbon bbq sauce (omg) that I added. The collard greens were also very good. Almost the best I've had. So close. My husband got a half rack of ribs with more of that magical cherry bourbon bbq sauce. Lastly, a side of Mac and cheese that wasn't bad, but nothing special. The Food: We got the small Family Pack (1lb. Pork, 1pint Collard greens, 1pint macaroni &cheese, 1pint coleslaw), 4 buns. We also got some hushpuppies. The chopped pork was very good and I enjoy that it comes unsauced. We ate-in and there were several sauces to choose from. There was Carolina, mild, and sweet, as well as a few hot sauces like Tapatio, Choulula, and Texas Pete. Mild was my favorite. Carolina was very vinegary and sweet was very sweet. The collards were some of the best I've had; they were well seasoned and not watery. The mac & cheese was a bit overcooked and grainy but not overly so and they were flavorful; I'd get them again. The coleslaw is not made with pickles (yay!) and had mild seasoning. It was cold and fresh. The buns that come with the family meal are just Martin's potato rolls, not the "toasted, fresh, baked bun" as is described on the menu. When asked to heat them, I was told that they can't. They don't have a microwave. This was the ONLY bad note of our visit. It felt very unfriendly and was poor customer service to not offer a way to heat the bagged buns. I expected freshly made buns so I was already disappointed, and then being told a restaurant has no way to heat a bun seems ridiculous. I wish I could've seen my face when I was told they couldn't do it. It makes me wonder what else they buy in bulk or outsource and aren't making at the "restaurant". The atmosphere: It's less than a dozen booths to eat at with what looked like a large, closed "employees' dining room. I assume they just don't want to clean the whole place and do they had it partitioned off. The area to dine in is right next to the cashier so conversations and orders are all you hear while you eat. It wasn't pleasant and it would have been nice to sit away from the front door and order area. We couldn't have a private conversation. It was clean and plenty of napkins, utensils, etc were available to grab. The service: Ordering was pleasant and efficient. We promptly had a question about an ingredient answered. The only service sticking point was, again, the lack of competency to come up with a way to warm a bun. Overall, we are planning on returning to try the ribs and wings but I will definitely find out if they have warm buns if I get them again. We had enough leftovers to make 2 more small meals later this week at home and everything tasted great the second and third time around. read more
