    Bread pudding

Yum! Surprisingly, this is my first time ordered from buz & Ned's -- I've had there food long ago at VCU events. I ordered for delivery through a 3rd party. First glance at the menu wanted to order so much. I ended up getting the slider sample with the Cajun corn and mac & cheese, along with a brownie for dessert. First -- they ran out of brownies! This is the ONLY company to call me directly and promptly when they were out of an item (remember, I ordered 3rd party). I was glad for that and happily switched to the bread pudding. The food was delish!! That Cajun corn is amazing! I thought the 2 pieces would be too much but I definitely wanted more when I finished. The sliders were good -- my fav was the pork. It was seasoned so well and the sauce was a perfect compliment. The brisket & chicken were not my favorite, but they were not bad at all either. The mac & cheese was also yummy. The bread pudding...I could have done without. It was a bit dry and lacked flavor. Otherwise, can't wait to try more of the menu!!

I was returning from DC and decided to stop for lunch in Richmond. I chose Buz and Ned's due to their reviews. There is no indoor seating at this time. You order at the window and op to eat at the picnic tables in front or take it with you. I ordered the sliders w/Mac and cheese, coleslaw, and hush puppies. The sliders were pulled chicken, brisket, and pulled pork I believe. The brisket tasted amazing! The hush puppies were great also!!! They were piping hot with a buttery onion taste. Easily some of the best hush puppies I have ever had. The coleslaw and Mac and cheese were good but not great. I'd still order them again if I ever went back. The customer service was top tier and food was good. I will stop by again when I'm in the area!

I've now had a chance to try both Buz and Ned's locations. While the character of this one is way cooler with the outside seating and the small inside dining room, I preferred the brisket at the other. Meeting up with friends for a weeknight dinner, we had no trouble getting parking and an inside seat. Still too warm to sit outside. And the inside dining room had room the whole time. At the counter, I ordered the "large" brisket and this time with double cole slaw and the cucumber & onion salad. A very good portion of cole slaw which was crisp and delicious. The cucumbers and onions needed a bit more time of soaking as the flavors hadn't completely melded. The brisket was cooked properly and flavorful but I did not care for the sauce that they put on it. It really wasn't needed this time and it took away from the flavor of the meat. Only four stars this time. I'll have to get back and try again. [Review 11985 overall, 1768 of 2019.]

BBQ Beef Brisket w/ Coleslaw (Classic side) & Macaroni & 3 Cheeses (Premium side)

I wish I could write a better review, but I was pretty disappointed with my visit here. Service was completely fine. They only do outdoor seating at this location, so even though it is tented, I wouldn't visit on a rainy day. Seeing from what my friends and I ordered, many of the things on their menu come in plastic containers that appear to have been microwaved before being served. For the sandwhiches, I can understand how people prefer the meat separated from the buns, but if the meat (and honestly the sides too) is prepackaged and just re-heated, the quality, flavor, and texture is then compromised. As a result, the beef brisket was dry with the sauce settling to the bottom of the container. The coleslaw was quite bland with a surprisingly wasabi-like kick to it? Not sure if this is considered normal but not a huge fan. Macaroni and Three Cheese: tasted like "one cheese," average if not subpar. Sides are fairly small. Cinnamon Bourbon Apples sound good, but I do not recommend. Mushy, overly-sour, and soggy. Farm cut fries were crispy, not bad. The one and only thing that I thought was great: sweet potato fries. Crispy, soft in the inside, and coated with just enough sugar. Honestly better than anything else I tried here. Not sure if this place was better during pre-covid times, but maybe I'll give them another try when they make dine-in's available. As of right now, I would not recommend.

25 years ago, building a bbq joint in this part of Richmond was taking a chance...there were few other businesses in the vicinity, lots of shuttered or abandoned buildings nearby, and the biggest steady draw was the AAA baseball stadium for the Richmond Braves (meaning, 6 months/year with no baseball goers). Despite these disadvantages, Buz and Ned's opened, an early pioneer in what was otherwise a dining desert. Fast forward to today, and B and N continue to be amazing representatives of Richmond. Their food beat Bobby Flay's head to head, and they give 10% of all monthly food sales to support community charities. So you can eat there and know your money is helping others. About that food: loads of combinations of classic bbq, and it is all good. It is rare to find a bbq joint where the beef is as good as the pork options (or vice versa), but B and N's is a rare exception. I opted for the combo of pulled pork and beef brisket, with sides of hush puppies and mac and three cheeses, plus a big iced tea. Man, goooooood eatin'!!! I wish this review let you taste how good the bbq is. I'm a southerner and picky about my bbq. It's moist, delicious, and quality meat beneath the sauce. Don't wait: head over to Buz and Ned's!!

This place has an interesting story and a long RVa history which seems quite appealing. I had the jumbo ribs but unfortunately they were mostly bone and the meat wasn't that great. The hush puppies were average and the baked beans were meh. The five ribs and 2 sides for $28 bucks. Does that sound like a good value?

Got takeout last week. I really like that they kept the meat separate from the buns, assemble yourself so it doesn't get soggy if you don't eat everything you order (guilty as charged). The ribs were the highlight of the meal for sure, smokey, chewy and not too soft. The brisket had too much BBQ sauce for my taste and not as much fat as I was expecting. The mac and cheese and cornbread sides were good.

    Beef ribs - meh!

In town recently for a visit and wanted to try the much heralded Buz and Ned's Real Barbecue. I first came to know about Buz and Ned's from the Food Network and the variety of segments, most prominently on the now defunct "Beat Bobby Flay" show. And true enough, when you walk into the small dining area, the episode where Buz and Ned's "beats" Bobby Flay in a head-to-head BBQ contest is playing on a constant loop on one of the TVs. But sadly, my experience at this Richmond favorite was not good. First, let me say that the customer service (or lack thereof) was HORRIBLE. It was around 5pm, and most of the tables in the dining area had dirty trays full of eaten food and were sticky with BBQ sauce and/or spilled drinks. I asked someone from behind the counter if they could bus some of the tables, but after 10 minutes, I just got some paper towels and wiped it down myself. I ordered the 1/2 rack of beef ribs and sides of coleslaw and french fries and was told it would be about 15-20 minutes before my order was ready. I patiently took my seat and waited..and waited...and waited. Finally after about 25 minutes and observing people who ordered AFTER me getting their food BEFORE me, I went to the cashier to ask about my order. And having worked in the restaurant industry in my youth, I definitely know the "oh Sh*t" look on someone's face when they realize the kitchen forgets an order. "Sorry Sir, it'll just be another 5-10 minutes. We cook all of our food to order, so we want to make sure your food is fresh" Yeah...okay, that's why three people after me got their orders first!!! So when my food is finally "ready", it is pretty obvious that the kitchen just threw the food onto the grill and gave it a "rush job" by turning up the flames in an attempt to cook it faster. Parts of the beef ribs were charred to the point of being burned, while other parts were lukewarm to outright cold. Normally I would've returned the food to the kitchen, but I was so hungry after now having waited FORTY MINUTES for my food, that I just wanted to eat so I could get back on I-95 back North. Also detraction because there was hardly any meat on the beef ribs, despite being assured that the beef ribs were "extra meaty". I can understand a restaurant having an "off day", but I don't like being lied to. As I was exiting the restaurant, I observed two employees having a rather loud argument about who's responsibility it was to stock the patio condiments and who was supposed to be on break. It's rather clear to me that there are some personnel issues here, so I would suggest to the owners that they send in their friends or associates to "secret shop" this restaurant to see for themselves if the customer service and food is up to their standards. This place may at one time served good 'cue, but based on my experience, Buz and Ned's is another restaurant that is just living off their reputation. ONE (well-deserved) STAR RATING.

So, we were told while in Richmond, we had to visit this place and get BBQ from here. We went in and it's kind of small, so we waited in line a bit and then had to wait for a seat. Our name was called and we got our trays for food. I got beef ribs and fried okra. I was really happy they had that as an option because not many BBQ places make beef ribs. My significant other got the pulled pork sandwich with fries and hush puppies because they were out of a side, but I don't remember what it was. The flavor of the beef ribs was amazing. The seasoning was great and the sauce on them was also great. I've had some pretty decent beef ribs, but we took a rack home for my mom because that's how good they were. The okra was nicely seasoned as well, but not everyone likes okra. Significant other really liked his sandwich, but loved my beef ribs. The table BBQ sauce was a very good compliment to the ribs and didn't take away from the flavor at all, so that was nice. The atmosphere had kind of car repair shop feel to me and they were airing the episodes that they were on the Food Network channel showing off how they spice things. The staff was very friendly and that was great as well. I recommend getting there early for lunch if you want a table indoor. They do have outdoor seating, but it was raining and humid. We will definitely be back the next time we are in Richmond.

Hushpuppies Pulled BBQ Chicken Extra Heavy Baby Back Ribs Macaroni & Three Cheeses French Fries
    Michael B.

First time ordering from Buz and Ned's Real Barbecue and I have to say it was a solid first visit. My girlfriend and I walked in expecting to eat in however the atmosphere was very small and dark and not very inviting. We decided to order Half rack of extra heavy baby back ribs, pulled bbq chicken sandwich, two sides of Mac and three cheeses, hushpuppies and fries to go! Overall, the ribs were fantastic in terms of flavor and tenderness. The Mac and cheese was the best thing of the whole order, tasted like something your grandma whipped up for thanksgiving dinner . However, the garlic bread was burnt and difficult to eat. The pulled chicken sandwich was okay but tasted too smoky! I'd say abit pricey for everything we ordered in regards to the portion sizes. Its a place that's definitely worth trying!

I went to the Buzz and Ned's on broad street and I thought it was just good. The service was great and everyone was really nice, I just didn't think the food stood out. A few people I know told me I need to try the original location on boulevard. I'm looking forward to trying that location.

Brisket and sides is where Bud and Neds does very well. I went with the slider trio to try one of each meat, and the brisket was awesome but the flavor of the pulled pork and pulled chicken was... different. Maybe vinegary? Whatever it was, I wouldn't order it again. Mac and cheese hit the spot (none of that velveeta nonsense) and fried corn on the cob was a welcome surprise. Get the cucumber and onion salad- it reminded me of sweet, homemade pickles. Btw, this was a to-go order and while it took much longer than expected (20+ min, ordered at door), was more than enough food.

The meats here were very good - extremely tender with a nice smoky flavor. I was personally a huge fan of the spare ribs and my girlfriend loved the prime rib (which I have never seen at a BBQ place before!). The sides were a bit lackluster and just ok, but service was friendly. While a bit pricey, I would definitely come back just for the meats! Meats: Brisket, Prime Rib, Pork Spare Ribs and Sausage Links Sides: Jalapeño Mac and Cheese, Potato Salad and Collard Greens

First, let me preface this by saying that I grew up in North Texas for the majority of my life…read more Second, I've had a LOT of BBQ during that time. Well known standards from the area including Angelo's, Railhead, Heim's, Cousin's, and a lot of old places that are no longer in existence. Each one offering its own spin on a Texas standard. Upon moving to Virginia, I hadn't ventured out to any of the BBQ joints, but one of my associates from the office would often talk about ZZQ. I had assumed that Virginians had a concept of BBQ that was akin to shredding some meat and pouring BBQ sauce on it. So, I finally had the courage to visit ZZQ a few weeks ago to pick up an order to go. I arrived just before opening time on a Saturday morning. There was a line that extended just down to the street. Probably 40 feet or so. Figured this would go pretty quickly once the doors opened. I was wrong. After 15 minutes, I had only moved about 5 feet. The line was building behind me, but simply appeared to have gotten stuck somewhere in front of me. After about 40 minutes, I had finally made it to the front door. Inside, there was another line up to the cutters. There were menus to peruse and a large sign with all the cuts and sides you could think of. A great variety. As I got closer to the front, I realized that it wasn't the cutters causing such a slow procession, but the customers. As I listed to them talk, most seemed to have absolutely no clue what they wanted at all. Did I mention the menus and billboards? They seemed to want to chat about food and prep more than just order. Had this been in Texas, the mob of a line would have escorted you out. When you get to the cutters, you know what you want. No time to dilly-dally. I got up to the cutter and placed my order. I was getting a variety, so I went for 1/2 a chicken, 1.5 lbs of sliced brisket, a couple of sausages, mac and cheese, cole slaw, and sauces. The cutter gave me a chunk of the brisket. Definitely moist, a bit overly fatty, but tasty. Their idea is the "meat has enough flavor so that you don't need sauce." He also mentioned they smoke with oak wood. Good to know. The taste is good. Probably as close to a Texas style as you can get, but with some small exceptions. Mesquite wood is often used in Texas for smoking. Plentiful, but obviously costly to transport outside of Texas. It has an exquisite flavor that is just right for BBQ. The second is the sauce. I like sauce...GOOD BBQ sauce! Unfortunately this is where ZZQ falls short. I didn't care for their sauce at all. Too vinegary and liquidy for the lighter sauce, and too heavy with molasses with the other one. So, I had to make do an whip up a small batch of homemade sauce at home that helped to bring it together. All the folks at ZZQ made it for a nice experience. Definitely customer oriented and friendly. I think the BBQ is as close to Texas-style as you can find in these parts, but kind of a miss on the sauce. Still, I can either make my own or buy a bottle at the local store if I want. Definitely worth a try, but you will need patience with a barrage of people who clearly have a lot of questions about BBQ.
