I've been bringing my Subaru to this place for various things because it was recommended to me by a friend and they are Subaru specialists. ( I bought the car from a dealership and they lied about everything they did on this car involving the brakes) Things were fine up until my most recent experience. They had been very helpful and accommodating with the things I needed, especially in a pinch when I needed something without waiting a month just to get in. Like replace the entirety of my brake lines when I literally lost my brakes. To even letting me make two separate payment for some of the work they did. Was very happy there. Why I'm no longer a happy customer... I had my front brakes replaced by them earlier this year in February, something I normally can do myself, but I was 8 months pregnant and physically couldn't do it, but I really needed new brakes, so I brought my car to them. Price for the job was $400+, which I expected due to labor cost. Fine. They informed me one of my calipers was sticking and recommended I replace it. So I agreed, which added another $200+ to my bill. I asked them, being that these things are usually replaced in pairs, how the other caliper was looking. They said it was fine. Cool, don't need to spend more money. Got my car back and after a few days, notices a shaking in my steering wheel when braking. Called them back about the issue, brought it back to them and what do you know? My other caliper needed to be replaced...so now I had to pay them even more for labor and the part. Another $300+. So from that situation, I felt kind of robbed and that they lied to me just to get more money out of me. Fast forward to recently. I had my baby two months after getting my front brakes and calipers replaced, so I wasn't driving my car everyday, but it never sat longer then a couple days, I had my fiancee drive it to local places a couple times throughout the week (still needed the rear brakes done, so I didn't want it driven far). I went back to work in July, replaced my rear brakes myself and started driving it to and from work, which I drive the interstate and over mountains. I started noticing a shaking in my steering wheel again when getting off the highway or going down steep hills. Called them to get it looked at as it was involving issues when their work. I explained the situation and they were trying to convince me it was because I let my car sit and the rotors got rusty. Again, I never let my car sit for more than a couple days at a time and washed my car regularly to get the salt off. Now, I'm not stupid when it comes to cars and I did not appreciate in the slightest how they were treating me and trying to convince me I caused the issue. I didn't want to bring my car back to them or give them anymore money. But what I was exercising was coming from the work they had done. I wasn't rude to them, I had just expressed my frustration with already spending a lot of money for the work previously and not wanting to spend more for the same work when I shouldn't even have to. Oh, I forgot to mention they replaced my rotor again since the initial installation of my rotors because of the caliper issue at no cost to me, which I did appreciate. So they ended up replacing my rotors and pads AGAIN at my most recent visit at no cost, which I also appreciate, but I could tell they really didn't want to. They wanted me to pay for the labor at least. I was reluctant, I didn't cause this issue, they gave me faulty parts, but I did because I do understand running a business and the mechanic wasn't rude to me when talking with them over the phone, as well as the woman who I first spoke with about the issue. I'm writing this review because of the owner. He was more rude to me than I was to anyone in that establishment when I went to pick my car back again. He was also the one I made the appointment with in the first place and the one treating me like I knew absolutely nothing about cars. He barked at me saying i need to treat his employees with more respect and I should feel lucky they helped me at all or I can take my business elsewhere when I was not rude to anyone. Frustrated a little, yes, but not rude. And my frustration was entirely surround my them treating me like I'm stupid. So wish granted. Most definitely taking my business elsewhere because I do not appreciate being talked down to and by reading other reviews, I'm not the only one who feels robbed by this business. read more

DON'T. UNETHICAL. DISHONEST. I brought my car in for an inspection. They told me I needed a wheel bearing and a balljoint and quoted me $525. I called another garage for a price comparison, and was told $330-$375 depending on the labor difficulty on the wheelbearing. AND THEN when the second garage did the work no wheel bearing was even needed. Jeff at The Source also told me a small dent in my bumper wouldn't pass inspection...$240 + $95 for parts not including labor. The second garage, a dent is not something required for inspection. PRICE COMPARISON. THE SOURCE: $860, not including the inspection charge or labor cost on the bumper. I PAID $181 at the other garage. These guys are conducting UNETHICAL BUSINESS...they made up work that didn't need to be done. SCAM ARTISTS. read more

Brad and his team has taken excellent care of my vehicle whenever I'm in a pinch. They do use manufacturer parts therefore you do pay manufacturer prices, but they haven't steered me wrong yet. So grateful to have found an honest, efficient mechanic near me! read more

I cannot speak highly enough about The Source. As a customer for 15+ years I can honestly say I have never had a negative experience. I have purchased 2 vehicles so far from Brad. I had the first one for 10 years and have been driving my current Legacy for 4 years. I would not trust anyone but Brad, Jeff and team to work on my car. I always appreciate the way they explain what my car needs and how they will fix whatever the problems are. I always leave feeling respected and that I am a valued customer. Wow. Do not EVER bring your car to these rip-off artists. They way overcharged me time and time again, but I kept going back because they are "Subaru Specialists". The final straw was when I took my car in to be inspected. The guy told me that he knew it couldn't be inspected (check engine light) but he STILL did the visual check and ROAD TEST. WTF?! It must have been some road test, because I left the car with a 1/2 tank and came back to 1/4. He then had the balls to charge me SIXTY DOLLARS for "his time". read more

I feel cheated and disgusted. This shop was overcharging me and making up issues with my car, asking me to pay top dollar. They said I needed an entirely new steering rack and wheel bearing ($1,800). I got a second opinion and all the car needed was an alignment ($100). I had been using this shop for a couple years and I feel like I have lost a lot of trust and money through this shop. I brought my Acura to the Source for a inspection prior to driving it to Florida. The Acura needed brakes, which the Source took care of. Jeff from the Source gave a price for the work. Their were no surprises when I picked the car up. Just returned from an hour long drive to "The Source" for a front wheel hub assembly that "Michelle" the lady who answered the phone assured me was is excellent shape. I asked all about it....."what car did it come from? how many miles? some rust? a lot of rust?" NO WAY!! This thing was in the worst shape then I have ever seen. Sooo much rust. NOT what was described on the phone and NOT something anyone would want on their car. I left empty handed. BEST PART of the experience was Michelle being rude on the phone, driving an hour for no reason, and one of the older mechanics at the shop being rude as well. I would recommend searching elsewhere in Northern Vermont for parts or to have Subaru work done due to their lack of quality control (junky parts) and lack of any patience, even when dealing with experienced and educated customers. Clearly anyone can claim to be an expert. These cars are easy to work on, and finding an honest understanding mechanic can be difficult. My recommendation, look elsewhere. Customer service is important and I didn't feel a lot that going on here. read more

I couldn't disagree more with the above review. We've been bringing our Subarus here for years and we've always found them to be honest and reliable. They look for a used part when possible and if we don't have a lot of money, they will prioritize repairs to stay within budget. We have 2 older Subarus which can need a lot of work at times. They've even sent me elsewhere when they knew that a garage across town (Uttons) could install a new muffler cheaper than they could. The hourly rate ($65) is on the high side, but they do things right. I had once gotten my CV joint replaced by a garage - they're not there anymore. Used to be on the Barre-Montpelier road, down on the right, past Noyle Johnson. 2 days later, the thing blew on 89, scary! Then they conveniently had no record of me being there two days earlier and wouldn't repair it.. We took it to the Source and they fixed it right up and even gave us a discount on labor because of what happened. We eventually got our money back from the other place, but it took some time. read more

Sometimes I think the only people who review on Yelp! and other similar websites are the cranks. I'm here to say that Jeff & Brad at The Source are simply the best, the most thorough and the most honest mechanics I've ever been to. I've been going The Source for over a dozen years, based on recommendations from other Subaru drivers, and they have taken very good care of both my car and my wife's. They don't talk jive, but rather always explain what they're doing in detail and will show me where on the car the problem is. They don't add-on work items unexpectedly (a problem my wife had with her prior mechanic), and they get the job done in a reasonable amount of time. Cheap car repair is basically what you pay for - cheap. My parents taught me at a young age that quality care repair will seem to cost a bit more, but it's worth it to get the job done rightI can't figure out the folks who call them "unethical" and "dishonest" - that's not how they are at all. If you've got a Subaru in north-central VT (and 1 out of 3 of you do), this is the place you should take your car. No BS just quality work. Jeff & Brad are genuinely great guys that aim to get your car back on the road safely with the exact work needed, nothing more or less. read more

I've been using The Source for the maintenance and repair of 3 different Subaru's since 2008 and can attest to the expertise of Brad and Jeff. I've found their knowledge of Subaru's to be superior to other mechanics in the area. They were able to resolve a problem with my transmission that another mechanic failed to diagnose correctly and repaired the wrong part in error. I brought my car to the Source and Brad immediately explained the problem and had it repaired and working the next day. Their prices aren't the lowest but their expertise and customer service has been the best to my satisfaction since 2008. read more
