My wife and I just had dinner at this great restaurant this evening. We were looking for someplace new to try and wife thought it might be good for low country cooking, which she loves. I'm glad she made the call cause this place is fantastic.
First I have to address the previous review saying portion sizes were small. I'm a big eater so when we read that I really didn't want to go and my wife talked me into trying it. Well, either sizes have significantly increased since he went or the previous reviewer is a REALLY big eater, because I left feeling uncomfortably full due to my insistence (over my wife's protests) of finishing my whole meal as a matter of pride. The servings were quite generous.
When we got to the restaurant we were the only ones there for dinner on a Friday night, which would have had me worried in any other town, but I know a lot of places in this area do most of their business from the nearby Fort Bragg / Pope Air Base lunch crowd. The dining room was pleasantly set up to feel both classy and casual. Our waitress sat us right away and was great throughout the meal with the perfect balance of attention without being intrusive. Great service.
The meal came with Hoecakes to start, which alone are worth a trip to the restaurant. I'd never had them (just stationed at Bragg, not from the South) and my wife had to even tell me what they were. Fantastic. We both got a cup of corn chowder to start, which was also fantastic. All dinners come with either a salad or a cup of soup, but I would've eaten a bucket of it. Skip the leaves and the dieting when you go, get the corn chowder. For entrees I had the seafood platter with crab cakes, fried catfish, and soft shell crab. All were very good. My wife had a smothered pork chop. It was ridiculously tender and juicy and I regretted not ordering that when I tried a bite of it. It was probably the best pork chop I've ever tasted and literally was scraping every last bit of meat off the bone when she was through with it. Again on the portion sizes, she ordered the petite chop (as opposed to the full), but it was a large serving. They could have called the petite the full size and we would not have been offended at all.
The sides were as good as the entrees. I had mac & cheese and succotash. The mac & was rich and creamy. Ridiculously creamy. If I somehow found myself on death row tomorrow for my last meal I'd ask for a bowl of this joint's corn chowder, a bowl of their mac and hoecakes to dip in each. I usually put hot sauce on my succotash, but there was no need as it was already flavored perfectly. My wife also got the mac and loved it, and she got greens which she loved cause it was well flavored with pork, and tender buy not at all mushy.
The bill was quite reasonable as well. We crested just over thirty for the whole thing, but only because I literally ordered the most expensive meal on the menu (the seafood platter with soft shell crab). My wife's entire meal was only ten bucks. You'd be really hard pressed to find a better way to spend ten bucks in this town. Highly recommended. read more
