As usual, I had a wonderful experience having my hair cut by Andrew at the salon: a bittersweet experience, since the salon is inexplicably slated to close at the end of the month. This seems insane, as part of the spa experience should be the opportunity to have nails and hair done. And bridal parties certainly will think twice about booking a wedding at a destination hotel without these essential salon services. QUITE disappointing! Worst experience I have ever had. My husband and I booked a spa day for our anniversary. Just having a new baby we were looking for a new monthly get away. the day started wonderful at the pool. Then We checked in they confirmed out services. Then they were 15 minutes behind schedule. No big deal as long as you still get your same time. Which was promised. We were scheduled for 2 deep Tissue massages. This was by far the worst massage I have ever had. I kept thinking he was warming up and the deep would start. This never happened. He left the room 2 times. When he left one of the times my husband asked me how is everything I replied with ok. He said is it deep enough? I get massages about once a week but since having a new baby I am not able to anymore. So I was really excited for this massage. The other therapist asked when he came back in was it a deep tissue he said no. Honestly it was so bad I almost asked him to stop. When I walked back into the locker room I looked and it was only 45 minutes later. So they started 15 late and did not go the full time. I then asked the attendant if they are running late do you still get the full time. I mean this should be a obvious. He said no. They have another one booked after you. I asked this same question 3 times and still the same answer. Maybe a language barrier. My husband was standing in the hall and laughing at this point with the answer I was getting. We then went to the front desk and asked the lead front desk person about the late start and asked what did out reservation say? He confirmed they were suppose to be deep and yes you should have got the full time. We said that is not what we got and then that was it. He didn't say anything. My husband asked for the manger card. We will see what happens from there? But so far... Don't waste your money. Horrible experience!!! read more

This review is solely a reflection of my attempts to contact the Group Reservations Department for the Claremont Spa. As part of a day-long bridal shower/bachelorette party, our group wanted to indulge in some spa services. I called the Group Sales number for the spa and left a message requesting more information for group services. Since I didn't receive a call back, I called again several times the next day and the day after and the day after that. Each phone call was made during normal business hours. Each time, I was greeted by a voicemail. Frustrated with the lack of communication, I decided to send an email and hoped for a response that way. Again, no response. Finally, I decided to call the general spa number instead. I was told that they couldn't help me and that I needed to speak to someone from the Group Reservations Department and that no one else was available to help me. I explained the situation to the person I spoke to, detailed my many attempts to contact the Group Reservations Department during the week, but all she told me was that the Group Reservations person would be in the following Monday and should be able to help me then. I called again and left another message but surprise surprise, NO RESPONSE AGAIN! It has now been over 2 weeks since I first attempted to get in touch with the Group Reservations Department at Claremont Spa. Of course I've already made other arrangements with another spa that offers the same services, but I feel compelled to write this review to warn others of the lack of response from the Group Reservations Department for Claremont Spa. I would give 5 stars for my amazing renewal facial, but the overall spa experience needs to change There are only 4 functional showers, the others are either broken or malfunctioning, on a friday mid day it was already full, cannot imagine the weekends. There is no sauna, no cold dip (or ability to get the showers to provide cold water) The steam is very hot, which is great though it seemed to constantly be making steam even when door shut for a while. However the whirlpool is just lukewarm, would really appreciate it hotter. There are few places to lay down in the spa facility, aside from treatment space, which is nice, but often you want to lay down with a towel(or not). 90% of women were wearing suits, which was very unusual at a spa, especially in the bay area. And we know the prices ahead of time, they are just too high. I actually went elsewhere for a massage prior to coming to the claremont for a facial, since prior body treatments there were really hit or miss and how many times can people write that the included gratuity is absurd, who does this? They need to change this policy. I can't even imagine that's legal, the practitioners deserve a large percentage of the overpriced treatment to begin with. read more

I would give four stars if I were rating the spa staff (not reception or therapist). Yet, the overall experience was two stars. My massage therapist was late, making hands on treatment 40-45 minutes. She genuinely wanted to give a good massage but was not in a category I expected for the price. I had decided to tip her 10%, still a good sum for the price, but when I checked out, a 20% tip was applied. When I told the receptionist I felt the service was worth less he ignored me and told me it was generally accepted to give that amount. (I made the appointment directly with the spa and as not informed of this policy). And yes, I agree I have tipped more for a very good massage and experience, which this was not. read more

I highly recommend Sunny as a hairstylist. She works with ease and confidence because she has the eye and skill of an artist. I was not sure what I wanted to do, so I allowed her to make suggestions, and this is one of the best cuts I've ever had. She has a gentle and easygoing personality which is very important to me as well. The environment is much calmer than most salons. And ample time was provided for Sunny to give me a haircut perfectly suited for my hair type and facial structure, etc. Even if you are not interested in partaking in the other offerings of the Claremont, I recommend booking an a appointment with Sunny. I did not have my hair colored or high/low lighted. However, since coloring is her specialty, I am confident she is among the best at this as well. read more

(spell check on yelp not working so be kind about errors) here is the straight poop on the claremont spa: as you can tell by my spa list, I am a serious spa whore. this day, I visited to have the couples massage. a nice thing about this is that we were asked up front what type of massages we would like rather than what more often at spas -- you get the basic aromatherapy or whatever. we ordered one deep tissue and one aromatherapy (which was lavender). the staff was fine but not overly helpful. if you enjoy exploring things on your own this is for you, otherwise, you will be disappointed that they do not show you around at all. Amenities: deluge shower (water fall) very large whirlpool, steam rm(no sauna in spa only in fitness center) free juice, cucumber water, tea, apples combs, mouthwash, iced towels all of the regular showers have 11(!!!!!!) shower heads (it took a phd to use but it was pretty impressive) Lay out/look Upon arrival we noticed that the spa layout was a little confusing. Obviously an attempt to maximize space resulted in a million little rooms, twists, turns and random doors. This came up when I thought I was going in to the steam room from the hot tub and opened the door to the waiting room! Oops! Given the range of spas I have visited, I expect perfection for this price level. I was a little disappointed. Tiles were missing in the whirlpool, the steam room smelled a little of mold (maybe they add the eucalyptus to cover?!) the smallness of the rooms makes the place a little dated which is ridiculous given that I know there was remodeling within the last few years. Hot tub The spa itself has all the "it" amenities but as I said, they are a little lifeless. The whirlpool is large and has controls so guests can control the bubbles. There are also hand rails everywhere for stability and for the disabled. 3 strange things here: 1) there was some weird (and UGLY) steel machine on the side of the spa that stands about 6 feet tall. It is only an aesthetic note but this seems really out of place when they have clearly tried to spend a lot of effort (and money)on the look of the spa! 2) there are 2 private tubs along side the whirlpool. I thought these were for treatments but then there was also a tub in my treatment room-- so who knows. I would be pissed, however if I had paid for a bath treatment and was out in the middle of everything (with only a curtain between me and everyone else. You just might want to verify this if you order a bath treatment 3) there are windows on all sides of the whirlpool. you have a peek a boo view of the bay from the woman's lounge. but it wasn't until I was walking to my car after that I noticed none of the windows are treated! Meaning you can see through from the outside. I can not be sure that the windows are not tilted/positioned so that you can not actually see in but if my booboos end up on the internet, as I stood up in the pool staring at the view, I will not be pleased. Treatments and Masseurs: both of us found our treatments to be good. I have to point out one really awesome thing. Both of our masseurs were hearing impaired. The Claremont spa got the extra star (3 to 4) for this. Hotel, Rooms, Food: We had breakfast in the paragon while Jordans is closed for improvements. It was not as good as Jordans and it was the same price. Rooms at the hotel have always been very nice. Some are more "standard" (small, 2 beds, etc) looking than others but most we have been in have been historically charming. If eating at the hotel, I would say only have lunch or a snack at Paragon and only have the sunday brunch at Jordan (or the new restaurant). Either way it is a bit overpriced but outside of those meal choices it becomes more overpriced. it may seem like a lot of complaints but I still give the claremont spa a 4. I give so many details because I appreciate when people give a lot of details about their experience so that I know what I am in for (and can determine what I am willing to pay for what I get). read more

Expecting an upscale retreat? No. Mobbed with unruly kids. Kids running/stomping through the hallways at all hours. Thin, paper thin, walls and ceilings let you hear all that is happening "oh Charles, oh Charles...". Beyond its location, which is beautiful, this spa/resort was a disappointment as we experienced. I can only assume the appeal is just to say that you stayed at "The Fairmont". It is a run of the mill Marriott with a high, charge for everything, run of the mill hotel. I treated myself to a birthday facial a couple of months ago and the whole experience was seamless, hospitable and skilled-- from the use of the spa amenities with a glass of complimentary champagne to the anti-aging facial and the sweet petit four at the end. They have on their spa list - prenatal massage. I scheduled myself for it. They don't have pregnancy pillows, had me lie on my side, which is what I have to do every night and every time I lay now. Plus you the massage didn't focus on anything that would be first thoughts of tension in pregnancy - lower back, hips. Neck and shoulder are great to be massaged, but really? Don't advertise for pregnancy massage if it is just a routine, only okay massage with the only change is me lying on my side. read more

My childhood girlfriends, a group of 9, have an annual spa day. We have had spa events throughout Napa Valley and San Francisco. After a decade of picking out destination spas, we decided to try out one in our backyard....The Claremont. Anthony the spa manager and spa group coordinator rocked out our bookings and coordinated our poolside terrace lunch. He was awesome to work with. He was responsive, professional, and even followed through with a special request which ended up being a total surprise. We lost a very dear friend earlier in the year and it was our first spa day without her. MJ was always ready for a spa day and made every event so she was all on our minds. I had made a request to Anthony to see if we could get champagne or mimosa before or after our treatments so we could do a little toast to MJ. He politely told me no due to the spa policy allowing food or alcohol inside the spa. While I was disappointed, I also knew that the pool and Paragon had a bar. It was such a lovely surprise for all when Anthony escorted us to lunch...as soon as we exited the spa, he had mimosas ready for the entire group! Thank you for the opportunity to remember MJ with a champagne toast - I know she loved it! The Claremont had enough treatment rooms and therapist to accommodate everyone in our party at the SAME time. We all had 90 minute services and the popular treatments included aromatherapy massage, deep tissue, hot rock, and the lomi lomi. Everyone was satisfied with the treatments. EXPENSIVE. I'm talking $76 for a pedicure. My mom's toes look great, but that's it! She was very disappointed. For that kind of money you expect them to, I dunno, lick your freaking feet. I got a $140 facial and I added on the "Power of Two" upgrade which meant that another lady gave me a pedicure simultaneously. Due to this, my feet weren't soaked or anything. Barely any attention to my calluses and just a little massage. My toes look great though. With the "discount" for doing this, the pedicure was $65. Jesus. Back to the facial. It was AMAZING. Granted, I've never had a facial before so I have nothing to compare it to. Still...wow! My face felt so fresh and smooth and new! My group of ladies (there were six of us) all said I was glowing. And dammit, I was. We all spent an hour doing the "pre-spa" stuff which included use of the following: -Jacuzzi - very roomy, cool rotating jets...but VERY hot and way too steamy in that room; -Deluge shower - awesome!! Who needs a massage?? -Seven head shower - maybe the one I used was broken, but I was not impressed at all; -Big roomy steam room - I brought in two ice towels with me and had to book it out of there after a couple minutes; -Water and juice in the waiting area - that was nice, but what spa doesn't have that? The locker facilities weren't very private. Not that any lockers are, but this was a bit cramped. And the whole area felt old and dingy. The only reason I'm not giving less than three stars is because the services you get (minus the pedicure...never again!) are freakin awesome. We were all VERY happy with our services. Facial for me, therapeutic massage for my mom, my mother-in-law got the Moor Mud Wrap, her friend got the Ayurvedic Rebalancer, and my sister-in-laws got the shiatsu massage and a scrub body thing I forget what it's called. This is the third spa that I have tried for a massage - there are two things that are important to me for a massage - a good massage (duh!) and also a quiet, relaxing atmosphere and Claremont had both. I booked an 80 minute aromatherapy massage on a Thursday afternoon. It was heaven because there was no one else in the whole pre-treatment area (11 headed showers, steam room, deluge shower and whirlpool). There were loads of towels everywhere, which I love, and iced facial towels for when you're all done with the steam room and ready to pass out. The whole pre-treatment process completely relaxes you and you get even more out of your massage. The place is really clean and the bathroom is really well stocked. The windows have really great views, but I was a little concerned that people could see in - ? The waiting area was big (there were only two other ladies there) and there was juice, water and tea available and apples. The sofas were comfy and there were tons of magazines to help you forget about your worries and relax before your treatment. My massage was with Johnny, who was really great. He was very responsive to my request for lighter or firmer touch and gave a great massage. He was also quiet!! The room was warm and the bed was comfy - nice fluffy pillows for legs and feet! Here are the reasons I didn't give them five stars - I thought for the price, some cheese and crackers could have been offered (for example) and also, the massage bed didn't seem to be heated and the materials weren't quite as luxurious as say, Bliss. It really was a great massage though, and I will definitely go back. Like I said, if I can find someone who delivers a good massage and I'm able to relax without distractions, I'm happy. read more

I give four stars since I thoroughly enjoyed using the Spa hydro therapy room, showers and massage. The large jacuzzi is the perfect temperature and in a nice room. The deluge is worth trying. Nothing like it for shoulder stress release. The regular showers have the most heavenly warm rain fall on your head and the shampoo and conditioner in combo with the rain shower gets your hair so very clean, you will be amazed the next day when it is still soft and sleek. The fifth star I skip since it IS super expensive and really for a rare treat unless you are quite wealthy and if you go on an event day.....parking is difficult. read more

My mom treated me to a mother-daughter overnight stay and spa day at the Claremont for graduation. It was a very positive experience, though a lot of it might have been the excellent company :) In total, I had the Lavender Essence body treatment; the Perfect Facial; a Hot Stone Pedicure; and a Premium Manicure. The Lavender Essence body treatment takes place in a massage room, and it starts with a scrub consisting of dried blossoms and salts(?). My skin was feeling a little dry before the treatment, so it stung a little bit when the scrub was applied and then wiped off with a warm cloth. The scrub is followed by a massage with lavender oil, though, which soothed any skin irritation that remained. Also, I'm not a super vocal massage-recipient (giving direction is stressful for me, haha, which would defeat the purpose of a massage!), so I always appreciate when I get a masseuse who is very responsive to my muscles (which my masseuse was). After the lavender treatment, I probably spent altogether too long in the multi-shower-head shower, effectively rinsing away all traces of lavender oil....but still thoroughly enjoying the novelty of water shooting at me from all sides. It was like a magical waterfall....OOooooOoooh so fancy! I wanted to take it home. The Perfect Facial was probably my least favorite treatment that I received. I have very fair skin that is aggravated/reddened easily, so as I was scanning the 'skin care' menu deciding what kind of facial to get, I was wary as I read the names of the various options-- many including my personal red-flag words, such as: "lift", "peel", or "microdermabrasion"! The "Perfect Facial" seemed like a good option because it included a "personalized" approach with an esthetician consultation. However, when the esthetician came in and looked at my skin under the big scary magnifying glass, rather than 'consulting', she outright exclaimed "OH MY GOD, WHY IS YOUR SKIN SO IRRITATED?!" To which I replied it is just a little fair and sensitive, and all of the heat of my previous treatment may have flushed my face, etc., etc. ....but all the same, she spent the entire facial treatment tutting and sighing and telling me all of these expensive face products I NEEDED to buy, and how I should come in for a facial AT LEAST once a month. Ok. I don't mean to toot my own horn but. My skin is NOT that bad, I swear. It's not even really bad, per se. Sheesh. The hot stone pedicure was enjoyable, and I thought it was much preferable to have hot little baby stones as toe separators instead of your typical foam ones. I felt bad that whenever the pedicurist tried to pumice my feet, I burst out laughing, since I have (apparently) the most ticklish feet in the world. She was very patient with me, considering. I also enjoyed the premium manicure, which I came with a hand scrub--I selected the lavender option. My hands were super soft, and my nails were well done. The manicurist was also very personable. All in all, I had a very nice time--- My mom and I agreed that we would return at some point, maybe to celebrate another milestone! Definitely pricey, though, so it would have to be a special occasion! read more

Everything was perfect from the temperature of the room, the lotions they used, just the right pressure, etc. I felt totally and completely relaxed without feeling beaten up. My wife was given a gift certificate from her boss so we decided to do a couples massage. We went early so we could enjoy a steam and jacuzzi first. Spa locker areas were fine, nothing unique. Waiting area was seperated so we really didnt get to spend any time together until it was massage time. My therapist, jennifer, was very experienced and worked hard! She was thorough and didnt talk to me, which I like. My wife however, had Magilla Gorilla karate chopping her back and talking to her the whole time. Besides not knowing what to do, MG spent more itme walking around the room acting busy than she did massaging my wife. For what you pay at a nice resort, this should never happen. read more

I have been here twice. Once for a couples massage which was a great massage but the spa ran out of hot water or was having a hot water problem so the shower I had to take afterwards was cold. That sucked. That was over 3 years ago. I went back this weekend for a girls weekend and we all stayed the night and did the spa during the day. I scheduled an 80 min massage. I can honestly tell you it was the BEST massage I have ever had in my life. I wish I could recall her name because she really was amazing. The steam room and sauna are great also. They also have this louge (spelling?) shower which is neat! It's great to schedule a treatment and spend half a day there. It is pricey though, but I honestly think you are paying for the whole spa experience and you need to make a day or half day of it. I'd go back for sure! read more

Both the masseuse (Diane) and the esthetician (Madeline) did a wonderful job and I was impressed with how observant they were of my needs or reactions. Well I don't know where to start LOL. First off, when I went and checked in, they asked me what size shoes and Have, I told them, and they basically gave me my sandals and told me what locker I have. They were quite rude and didn't even offer a tour of the facility. First thing I notice is the smell. It smelled like a mixture of really old home, and chlorine. And my God the humidity in. I know spas can be humid at times obviously especially the wet areas but this was unusually humid. thereI also couldn't help but notice how outdated everything was immediately. The linen baskets were overflowing in and so were all the trash cans. As I'm sitting there looking at these trash cans, and linen baskets, employees are just walking around not even seem to care.As far as the robes they are not the typical kind that you normally would get a spa they are like the ones that are I think terrycloth. Like basically a towel. Uncomfortable and not the least bit relaxing. Anyhow, first thing I did was I had for the steam room. I did not know that they did not have a sauna. That really sucked. I thought it was supposed to be a eucalyptus steam room, but I smelled absolutely no eucalyptus. And try not to look up when you're in there because a lot of the really dirty ugly old light. Yuck.Next we decided to try the whirlpool. OMG. First of all the room where the whirlpool is, is just an absolute eyesore. There are 2 bathtubs like right next to it that are useless. There is also a really ugly shower in there. I mean it is just absolutely an eyesore. Very uncomfortable vibe in there. So the whirlpool itself, well I'm not sure if it was a whirlpool or a tub of chlorine but it was so bad that my eyes actually began to burn. Matter of fact, my eyes burned for the remainder of the entire day. So after that I took a shower, the showers are actually OK I can't really complain about those. Nothing special but not terrible. So onto the lounge. The place looks like it was decorated in the 80s by someone who decorates nursing homes. I mean it looks like pastels threw up in there. There was only one real Chaise lounge in there, and everybody wanted it. I was absolutely disappointed as well that they did not have any kind of snacks at all. They had some teas, but no hot water. I saw some apples in a basket on the shelf but they did not look too appetizing. I mean at least put out some Almonds or dried cranberries or something. I think most people who go to spas expect something to snack on. As one person was coming out of a massage, the person bringing her into the lounge told her to help herself to some refreshments. I wanted to laugh out loud. So then the worst part. The massage. I would not really call what this woman did a massage. She spent most of the time sticking her finger in places and holding it there or massage in one spot with one finger over and over again, sort of like any Chinese water torture sort of way. It was absolutely awful. I don't know if she was just tired that day or what but it was clear she was not even trying. I could not wait for it to end it was what seemed like the longest massage I've ever had. Probably because I just wanted it to end. So as were checking out, they asked my sister and I how everything was. I was not going to say anything but my sister actually spoke up and said that I was extremely unhappy with my massage. They brought the manager out and she was actually very nice and did not charge me for the massage. She was seemingly trying to make excuses for this woman but I know that is just her job etc. I'm just glad I did not pay for an hour of misery. And the staff that I checked out with they were incredibly apologetic and nice. So I know you can't give a place no stars, but if I could I would give them zero stars, but since they did not charge me for the massage they get a star for that. But save yourself and spend a day at senspa in Menlo Park. read more

This is one of many spas I have gone to in many years and found it to be nice with a beautiful view of the Bay Area. The spa was clean and have both a steam and sauna room which is always a plus. The hot spa is a good size and is right next to two large windows with breathtaking views. A major downside to the spa is maybe not the spas fault but they could definitely try to do something about it. During my stay there there were numerous of groups in the waiting quiet room and at the hot spa who appeared to think they were at a park yelling across the room to each other knowing there were other people trying to relax and have quiet time. I found it hard to get into my Zen zone and take a short nap in the waiting room because of these loud girls and I did not see any staff coming to try to let them know to tone it down. At one point I was so annoyed I got up to go to the staff to complain and as I was doing that one group in the hot spa got up and left as they were leaving the spa so I got back in and enjoyed my quiet time. Staff need to be aware of the environment so other spa goers can enjoy their time. read more

This review is about the hair salon at the Claremont which is downstairs from the spa. I have been getting my hair cut and colored by Sunny for many years. Recently, she gave me a shorter cut than usual and I'm getting tons of compliments on it. I highly recommend her. She is an expert colorist and hairstylist. Prices are reasonable for the area and added bonus, you get to enjoy the Claremont property. I recommend going for a drink or something to eat at Limewood after your service. read more

When I visit the Bay Area and have the time, a visit to the Claremont Spa is a special treat. Massages are always great with a nice variety of treatments to choose from. I love the steam room and deluge shower, and the whirlpool is not only relaxing but has spectacular window views of the bay. The showers and vanity area are always well-supplied. Waiting for service is a treat in itself with tea, fruit, cucumber water, reading material available in a comfortable, quiet, relaxing setting. The staff is attentive and competent. I have never had anything but a positive, refreshing, and rejuvenating experience at the Claremont Spa. read more

I really like this spa but I must say that the last time I went, I had one of the worst massages I've ever had. The guy (his name was John), kept trying to crack my toes and fingers. That is not a deep tissue massage. I almost ended my massage early but decided to just stick it out and hope it would get better. I had to ask him twice to use more pressure. It helped a little but it was still not a good massage. Just a waste of time and money. Fortunately, my pedicure that day was excellent. I also love the jacuzzi and the showers. All in all it was a relaxing day and I have had a massage there before that was good. But if I go back for another massage, I will definitely ask for a different masseuse. read more

TWO HUNDRED and TEN dollars for a 50 minute massage? Glad it was a gift. No access to the pool, no access to the gym, and nowhere to sit outside. Massage was OK, lockers and locker rooms are tiny, nowhere to change, place is about 200 degrees in there, I was so busy sweating, I couldn't relax. I say better values elsewhere. Rip! read more

I went to the Claremont for a spa day and enjoyed the facial and massage. My manicurist seemed experienced, but the manicure chipped by the time I got home (because it was too thick rather than because I touched anything before it was dry) and was flaking off in chunks by the next day. The facility is nice and many services are good but I feel terrible to have spent so much money on what is probably the worst manicure I have ever had. It definitely seems like they ride on the prestige of the location rather than making sure the services are top notch. I would stay away unless you are going with friends and really want to enjoy the hotel, otherwise it's not worth it. read more

I was given a gift certificate as a gift. I had a wonderful massage and left feeling relaxed and re-invigorated. Only negative it is a bit pricey but it seems to be about average for a massage. I would recommend. Added plus, the bar at the new Fairmont is wonderful! read more

Outstanding experience here. The manager, Joy Shimura, could not have been kinder or more accommodating: she managed to move things around and find us appointments on a busy day. I have been going to the Claremont Spa for years and it never disappoints. The staff is polite, friendly and attentive. They create a very personal atmosphere as they provide spa services that are exceptional. The message therapists are knowledgeable and caring. I recently was in a car accident that caused injury to my neck and it has been with the aid of the therapists that I feel almost completely healed. I look forward to my visits there. read more
