We booked a couples' massage a month in advance to celebrate our first anniversary, with appointments scheduled right at opening (9 AM). When we arrived, the front desk staff hadn't even opened yet--so everything started late. Then we were told one of the massage therapists had called out, which meant we couldn't have our couples massage at all. I was told I could get a facial instead, but once we got to the waiting room and the front desk lady finally arrived, she said that service was already booked. The only alternative offered was a pedicure--but that technician had also called out. So even the backup to the backup wasn't available. My husband was taken back for his massage with Isaac, who gave him a fantastic experience. At least his massage was half off. Meanwhile, I was left sitting in the waiting room in a robe, with no apology, no alternative, and no effort to make it right. The issue wasn't the massage staff--it was the complete failure in planning, scheduling, and communication. If you can't honor confirmed appointments, especially for milestone celebrations, you shouldn't be taking bookings. We won't be back. read more

This isn't a spa I'm going to go to regularly because it is on the expensive side, but I had a wonderful experience for a splurge. It started when I arrived and the valet parking is validated when you have a spa service. I was greeted right away, offered some champagne, and taken downstairs to the locker room. One improvement area here is that they basically sent me off to look through the lockers to find my own robe with the size I wanted. I've gone to a lot of fancy spas and usually they take care of that part for you. It also would've been nice to know that they have amenities like a sauna that you can use because I would've arrived earlier to use that. My massage therapist came down to get me and I had the most wonderful relaxing massage. Definitely a place I will keep in mind for another special occasion. read more

Several years ago, I used to go to the spa at the Brown Palace regularly for facials. The aesthetician was wonderful, the accommodations and overall spa area were wonderful, the front desk treated me like I was special. Then the front desk started getting snotty. They treated me like they were doing me a favour by allowing me to come spend my hard-earned money at the spa. They screwed up appointments, and nobody ever apologised or seemed to care. I stopped going. It's probably been 15 years since I gave up on them, but I wanted to do something special for myself for my birthday. I called in March to try to book an extensive spa day for myself, but was told they couldn't make an appointment for June and to call back "in a couple of months." It's now a month before the day, I called, and they're all booked. I'm irritated, but that may not be their fault. What is their fault is the snotty, nasty attitude of the front desk. Still. Again. There was no warmth, no attempt to be helpful - just a sneer and an attitude like I'm a pain in the ass for asking for the appointment(s). They could get part of what I wanted, but offered me 9 am. I said, "I have reservations for tea at 4 pm. Is there anything available a little later than 9 so I don't have to wait around for hours or go home and come back?" She sighed in exasperation (I could hear her eyes rolling over the phone) and talked to me like I was a child, telling me they close at 5 and she can't make tea reservations for me. It took me a second to figure out what she was talking about, since she hadn't remotely answered my question. And I think she was deliberately obtuse so she could talk down to me, since the question was pretty clear. So it seems they've gotten worse, and from the other reviews I'm seeing here, the lovely locker room/shower areas are now in disrepair and dirty. Maybe I should be thanking the snotty witch at the desk for saving me that heartache. read more

They've made the necessary upgrades and repairs compared to past reviews, and it shows. Best spa experience ever! Front desk were very friendly and polite especially Heavon, Bruk and Tyler. I was greeted with champagne and promptly checked in. Gloria my massage therapist heard everything I requested and delivered a phenomenal massage. I will define be attending their new wine down Wednesday and join their membership. The steam room is outstanding and just the right amount of heat and steam. I feel so relaxed and genuinely grateful to be feeling so much better. I may not be getting a facial, manicure or pedicure but I still left feeling ready to adorn the cover of GQ magazine. - The hotel is a part of Denver's rich history. - Complimentary valet parking with spa treatment. - The spa is in a date of disrepair in a very obvious way. - Treatments are exceptional and staff friendly. - Prices are medium to high. - Separate locations for gender and no real facilities available. - Forbes Five Star rated. Having good skin is an important asset, even for a man. You're not left out to dry with treatment options although the industry standard facilities are non-existent at the Brown's Spa. There is no pool, jacuzzi or sauna, only a small steam room with missing tiles and locker room with peeling laminate. The treatments deserve five stars but the facilities (missing tiles, peeling laminate) and condition of the spa (lockers filled with towels and supplies wide open) were too much to overlook in a spa that is supposedly Forbes Five Star rated. The Ritz Carleton offers services for a similar price with much higher standards of quality. I don't think I will be back. read more

I was in Denver for vacation and wanted to take some time to relax. I did some searching on the options and overwhelmingly the recommendation was the Spa at The Brown Palace. I booked the "Traveler's Relief" package, which included a 50 minute massage, 25 minute facial, and 25 minute pedicure. In general the spa was fine, the massage was by far the highlight. The only major thing that bothered me is that when I booked and was given a total on the phone I could have sworn the woman said "including a 20% gratuity" - but the mandated gratuity was added to the price listed online. The services were about what I was expecting, but I was a bit disappointed in the facilities. The ladies lounge was stocked with some odd snacks from my view - chex mix and peanuts. The water pressure in the shower was almost comically bad, and the drain in the shower must have been clogged because I was standing in a pool of water. To make things more frustrating, I'm sure they have not replaced the hair dryer for years. Given that I was required to pay a 20% "service and gratuity" on top of my overpriced service, I would think they could replace some simple amenities. My massage was wonderful - the therapist was communicative and experienced. Another strange facility thing though is that I was brought into a room for a couples massage, not a big deal at all, just weird. The facial was promoted as and "express" facial, but I still think it was worthwhile. The esthetician said "We have a one hour facial that we're going to fit into 30 minutes". She was bustling around and she sure did make it through an entire facial in 30 minutes. My skin felt very soft and wonderful afterwards, it just took back from the relaxation a bit because she definitely needed to rush to get through it. The pedicure was also promoted as "express" I believe. Honestly I wish I had just gotten a longer facial and skipped the pedicure. It was fine, nothing special. Probably would have gotten a better and more cost effective one had I just gone to some nail salon. I did use the steam room, which was very nice and clean. The staff of the spa were all polite and helpful in giving recommendations. I sat in the lobby of the hotel for a bit, which is also very nice. Was this the best spa experience I've ever had? No. Was this the worst spa experience I've ever had? No. Was this a good value for the pricetag? Definitely not. Would I go again? Perhaps just for the massage. read more

But just a complete lack of attention to detail at this spa. Absolutely NOT a destination spa-It is very dated and could use some attention from Marriott corporate. Massage was good-not great. Very little amenities and what they did offer was in disrepair. Had to ask for additional towels as the towel rack didn't have any towels. Very full waiting room and some women were even standing waiting for their treatments. This could be a huge opportunity for this historic property, but sadly it missed the mark. read more

Nothing upscale about that. Salon is outdated and lacks charm. A great surprise to end my busy work week! My husband called and booked me a spa package right after work. I had a few dinners at the Brown Palace Hotel and the food and staff were very nice & charming. Little did I know the hotel also had a really nice spa in the basement! I walked in and was led by the staff down the stairs to a basement. In my head I was thinking, why is the spa in the basement? This isn't going to be pretty. But once she walked me into the waiting area, showed me my locker, and walked me to the restrooms I was in disbelief. It's as if she walked me into an enchanted forest or something. This was no dingy damp basement. It was nice dark wood and there was a fountain with flower petals in it. I put my things away in a cool locker that has a passcode, then went into the bathroom to take a quick shower to get off my makeup. The shower was quite roomy, spacious and clean. I didn't want to leave. Then someone knocked on my door and was calling my name. I had taken too long looking around at all the amenities and shower & sauna rooms. After I got my eye makeup off, I went back to the waiting room and helped myself to some water. There were some snacks such as nuts & cranberries, chocolate covered pretzels, and assorted teas and bottled water. First I got a facial which I was in dire need of! The dryness in the high altitudes had dried out my skin and lips. The aesthetician noticed and put on some of their lip balm when she finished. My face felt soft and moisturized afterwards. I forgot her name but she was very friendly and accommodating. After that I got a sugar scrub by another women who later gave me an hour massage. My favorite part was washing off the scrub with the rain shower and 6 shower heads. It was awesome, but so many knobs that I forgot how she showed me to turn them off. The massage was the cherry on top at the end of my day. She got out all my knots and was very nice too. The shop at the check out area was very cool. They have a lot of their products from the Brown spa and it seemed like all natural stuff made with honey and herbs. They don't push their products on you like other spas. I'll definitely make a return visit to this spa. Overall I enjoyed my visits to this hotel for food, drinks, and the spa! It's a very charming old yet very well kept hotel. I've been to other hotels similar to this around the country and they're usually worn out and in desperate need of repairs, but the owners managed to keep this place renovated and up to date. All of the staff that I've encountered are friendly and very nice. I was very surprised by the spa in the basement, it was one of the nicest spas that I've been to. read more

the worst most unprofessional experience. i purchased a spa day for my wife. my wife invited a friend. the spa was $330, you would think this establishment would do it right. they didn't credit my wifes gift card and charged my wifes friend an additional $330. what??? the rude and consenting manager john finally issued a credit, no apology at all!! i am a native of colorado! my family has been a regular for afternoon tea for over 50 years! the brown palace is not the same as the consistent excellent customer service of the past. do not waste you money as i did. the oxford hotel will provide a better old courteous colorado experience. stay away from the brown place only the name exists not the service read more

Great massage! My therapist used real Swedish techniques to work out tight muscles. My 50 minute massage felt like 90 minutes. Ahhh.... Nice use of space. This is an old hotel, and they built the spa only within the last few years. The locker room is small, but still spacious. The robes and towels were soft. Good shower facilities, with nice iridescent brown tiles that had a very calming effect. The only negative was that someone had a catered lunch in the women's waiting area, and staff did not remove the room service table/dirty dishes. I was in and out of the waiting area over a 2 hour period and nothing was removed. That's pretty outrageous. Still, I would go back because the massage was so great and the staff was very friendly. read more

The Spa ambiance/itself was fantastic! But my review is for the service. My facial was purely sad. The pressure of the facial, I felt as if my dog was licking my face. Weird, yet the comparison was so on spot. Warm, cold, sticky, light, fast whisking lol. I couldn't help but laugh because it seemed my esthetician was just using all products on my face like a mad scientist gone bazurk?! I loved loved loved the spa itself. It had to have one of the best steam rooms I have EVER been in, and the shower was great, the products that they have smell and feel wonderful. Robes were great as well. The whole spa womens lounge area was wonderful and I couldn't have been happier. Okay now here are a few of my downsides. And just let me say again I really liked this place and I will be back if I ever make it back to denver again. first off, when making the reservations for the couples treatments the receptionist forgot to ask if I wanted male or female therapists. It is my believe that this is a standard practice to ask this. I was going to call but they gave me a standard reminder call and I then asked. They said it was two females. Okay I say can I request a male if possible. She says i don't think it will be, but I can put it in the file. Okay wrong answer in my opinion. They should have at least pretended to try. They have you fill out a little survey on what you want your therapist to work on. I filled mine out and i think my therapist got it wrong. She AVOIDED my trouble areas. Now the rest of the massage was good. However i just spend a little over $100 for you to do the exact opposite of what I asked you too. Now if this was a cheap or free treatment why complain? It wasn't so I feel I can. The spa is two levels, the first level is treatment rooms, the second the lounges. There is an elevator between the two floors. The therapist take u up and down in the elevator instead of the stairs. Okay. Say you just finished a relaxing massage and get stuck in the one story elevator? Not long but it kinda ruins the massage after glow. I still think that something should be done about the whole thing. Just out of a courtesy for the inconvenience. read more

WOW. I work in the spa industry and have had my fair share of facials. The facial I got by Veronica today was probably the best I've ever had. So relaxing and my skin looked brand new when I left! She also did some extractions and did them carefully Then I got a pedicure by Melody which was also 5 stars! Very relaxing and she was very caring in asking what I was looking for. I also got a foot mask which was amazing. Blair at the front desk was also such a sweetheart and accommodated me last minute and made the whole process go smoothly. Ok, I'm a guy that doesn't do the spa thing that often - pretty much just when my wife makes me. Soooo.... take that with a grain! :) I went in for thier swedish massage, drinks etc. wow, heaven. This place was amazing. My only complaint was that the television in the men's room wasn't working. But, it looked like they were working on it as soon as they found out. But man... that was amazing. This place sold me on the whole spa thing. I got my massage from these two women. I'm married and my wife was next to me, so as usual, i'm a bit uncomfortable lying naked on a table while some young girl massages me. But, she was great! Didn't make me uncomfortable at all and was really into what she was doing as well. I also had some special needs (previous back injury) which she was very respectful of and took it easy on the areas I asked her to. Price was pretty high. Absolutely perfect experience! I just went in for a facial and it was my first time going to the spa at the Brown Palace. I highly recommend going on a weekday, it was very quiet and not too busy---so the ladies lounge was very relaxing with peaceful music playing I was able to sit and enjoy a cup of chamomile tea and relax for a few minutes. Signature massage 5 stars Signature pedicure 3 stars (average and not worth the price) A friend and I booked a spa day here this week and had a good time. The layout is unusual and you're constantly going up or down floors for treatment which took away from the relaxing atmosphere for me. My signature massage was awesome, a perfect blend of Swedish and deep tissue. The signature pedicure was nice, but certainly no nicer than any other all-out pedi I've had (ie those with foot masks and paraffin dips). Certainly not worth the high charge for it. My friend got the "Relax" package and loved it. Would go again, although honestly next time I'll probably try another spa. Nice but not mind-blowing. The Spa at the Brown Palace treated my sister and I like gold for her birthday! We came early to explore and relax in the ladies lounge. The steam room was great. What I liked the most was how private the Spa and steam room were. After placing our lunch and drinks order, we were given our massages in separate rooms. I wish I remember my girls name. My wife & I stayed at the Brown Palace recently and made use of their spa facilities. I checked out the prices beforehand and knew the services were more expensive than most but we booked two massages and a facial anyway. The massages were good. My wife said her facial was good also. The problem came when I went to pay the bill. The girl checking me out handed me a small sack containing three beauty products. I asked "what's this for?" She said "they are for your wife." I said "oh, she found some things and didn't pay for them yet?" She said "yes, I believe so." I didn't think much about it because this sort of thing happens often with my wife. My wife joins me a few moments later and I asked her about the sack of goods and she knew nothing about them! Apparently, the spa personnel decided to just add items to our bill without asking. The second offense came when she informed us of the total. I was expecting a high amount but her quoted amount was well over $100 high. I asked for an itemization and then learned my wife's facial cost $250!!! I told them "the facial I ordered was only around $100. Why are you charging me $250?" The girl said "well, your wife upgraded the facial." My wife spoke up and said "I did no such a thing! The lady giving me the facial never mentioned upgrade or up charge." The clerk said "well, that is what you got and it was $250." I called in the manager and the unwanted services/product were discounted. Wonderful spa! My love affair with the Brown Palace continues. From the moment you arrive to the valet in his old-fashioned formal attire, you will feel the charm of the hotel. The spa is right off the impressive lobby. Upon entry, the friendly front desk associates greet you perfectly and offer you a mimosa. Then, you're shown the well-kept lockers and locker room and given a comfortable robe and slippers. You can relax in the lounge with the multiple new magazine issues while sipping your mimosa on the red velvet couches and enjoy water, snacks, or tea too. I had a 50 minute signature massage. My room was quiet and comfortable. My masseuse was friendly, skilled and all-around lovely. It was a very relaxing experience! After, I took a lovely shower using the signature lemongrass sage products. I didn't try the steam room, but it looked great too. It may be more pricey than other spots, but it is well worth it for a true spa relaxing experience. Hospitality at this hotel is wonderful. read more

A great spa in a fantastic, historic hotel. I was able to schedule a 50-minute swedish massage and an 80-minute facial. I really wanted to try the celluite melting body scrub, but unfortunately since I called only a day ahead, there were no spots available. (Which is too bad for my celluite-ridden thighs.) :( The steam room was beautiful with lovely tile work in a gorgeous brown palette. The steam was plentiful and hot - just perfect to relax your mind and body before treatment(s). Unfortunately, the towels were a bit shabby. I was pretty disappointed that the hotel kept such towels with strings hanging all around like fringe. However, that was my only disappointment with my spa experience. My massage was fine. My therapist was very professional and didn't talk much - which I like sometimes when I'm getting pampered. It was my fault I was so relaxed (and happy to be away from my 3 little boys) that I forgot to mention to use more firm pressure to work all my kinks out. So, good, but nothing spectacular. My facial was better. My therapist was extremely personable - and more chatty, but I can be chatty, too. My skin was like silk after having the Anti-Aging Phytomer Facial. Loved it! I was talked into 3 upgrades, but I think they were worth it. (I do have to give myself credit for resisting the $185 bottle of "synthetic snake venom" tonic, though.) :) read more

I used to frequent this type of upscale establishment but have been going to a chop shop for mani pedis for a while now. Melody, who was my manicurist/pedicures today, reminded me of what luxurious pampering is all about. This is not what i would consider a top of the line Spa. The room that you get changed in was dirty, The water crafts were almost empty and warm. Empty bottles lying around. The snacks were empty. I have been to some top spa's and this one does not come close. The Locker did not work. I finally found one that did, but it was dirty. No shoes in the locker room. BTW I had an 80 Min massage, nothing changed during the time I went in and came out. The room was empty for 80 Min. Before I went in for my massage a lady came in but did not clean the place. I went to the spa for a facial during the Covid-19 pandemic and the service was excellent. The spa was clean, no one was really in the hotel, and I was in and out with no issues - which says a lot during this time! There was no access to amenities which sucks, but part of pandemic restrictions. I did the Signature Facial with a cinnamon peel and anti aging mask. My skin certainly looks refreshed and no downtime from the peel because it is a light peel. Compared with other facials I've received, it felt a bit rushed and my esthetician was less knowledgeable than I would expect for a spa of this quality/price - which is why I went with 4 rather than 5. I would certainly return, but with a focus on relaxation than super high quality skin care. read more

Very disappointed in atmosphere, cleanliness as well as service on arrival. Scheduled spa package for three people in December. No one at the front check in desk when we arrived, but two girls did appear w/ in 10 mins. We were told to "just go downstairs". There was no direction as to what to do, locker, robe sizing, no slippers. We eventually found what we needed and asked for slippers which they brought (sizes too large). We were then rushed through our massages, told to take robes off and go upstairs for nail treatment. All spa amenities were closed due to COVID, which is understandable. The nail techs were kind and very good at their jobs. The salon itself is run down w/ warn out leather seating and carpet. Nail area presents as dirty/dingy. Girls at check out desk seemed disinterested and on their phones but succeeded in checking us out in a timely fashion. Just not what I expected from a spa at a luxury hotel. We also decided later that evening to have a drink at the bar and while there was no seating available inside the bar we sat just outside in a cozy seating area near the escalator. I cleared a table that was covered w/ used glasses and food that looked to have been there awhile. As we sat we witnessed the overflow of a toilet in the women's bathroom, the use of a plunger that was dripping across the carpet after use, women walking through the muck of the bathroom, no signage put up. The bathroom smelled like urine, no hand-soap or paper towels. Again, the hotel seemed dirty and in need of a good cleaning. read more

This was a splurge and a last minute idea of going to get a facial. It was very quiet atmosphere loved the spa robe offered water or champagne and I really wanted to love it. I did, but as a esthetician myself in the spa biz for 14+ years. I talk about products ingredients and if I use modalities what they can expect and what the benefits. I didn't tell anyone I'm in the spa biz, I just wanted to enjoy the treatment. Well no explanations of what to expect during the service especially when she hit me with the micro needling, totally unexpected. The micro needling if actually trained properly is done in certain patterns not zigzaged all over the face. But I didn't say anything she continued with the service. My face did feel fine afterwards. The esthetician just needs to tweak the service a little to be more pleasant and informative of what to expect before making the client uncomfortable and not knowing what's going on. Also especially after COVID and still in a pandemic no mask was used during the treatment and no gloves. Just my thoughts I know everyone is ok being so close to a stranger without a mask and she did wash her hands. But again as I'm In the biz and knowing everyone runs there business different, I'm all about safety and knowledge for the guest. I squealed with delight as I was led into the sexy ladies dressing room. Immediately, I felt like a queen. Okay, so the waiting room isn't as swanky as other spas I have been to, but I enjoyed the high tech lockers and the intimate feel. A little dark for my taste, but then again, the whole spa is in the basement. I had several services and the staff were sublime. So generous and helpful. I was there with my girlfriend and they helped us pass notes to eachother about how much fun we were having ( Ehn, we are dorks..) It was the best pedicure and manicure I've ever had. Loved the private room where we had those services provided. We weren't on display as you are in some places. We were at the Brown Palace for afternoon tea and happen to stop into the spa to schedule a massage for later in the week. We made our appointment with a very friendly lady and we were looking forward to the appointment. On Thursday we go in for our appointment and things go wrong from hello. We enter the spa where a lady who is working is a different person than we made our appointment with, if she was there when we walked in to make an appointment, then we would have never made one. We walked in saying hello and that we had an appointment for a couples massage. To which she responded with "yeah". She walked us back to the waiting area and told me to wait while she took my fiancé to the gentleman's locker room. Then she escorted me the women's locker room. She showed me the robe which was a large and I asked her if they had a 2xl. She said she would go look and returned a very short time later to say all she could find was an extra large. Which she was very rude about. So I had to go to the massage room in my clothes and after my massage I had to put back on my clothes there. At this point I am covered with massage oil and the massage therapist did not even offer me a wet wash cloth to try to get off some of the oil. So I put on my clothes and went to grab my purse from the locker room. When I went to go check out they asked how my massage was and I informed them about the robe. They apologized then continued to say they do have robes that are 2XL and when I asked why I was not offered one, they said they did not know. They offered me 15% off the massage and a lotion to take home. With the 15% off it was $295 and to replace my clothing $221. So the massage cost me $516. Maybe it was just the hype of having a spa day at the Brown Palace that left me a little disappointed or maybe it was the spa package we had. Don't get me wrong, it was a nice day but I feel like for the money, it wasn't something I would do again. My spa day started with a mini mani and mini pedi. The pedi was very relaxing. Getting my feet worked on while in a massage chair and sipping on champagne is my idea of a good time. The problems started when I got to my mini mani. The manicurist cut my finger pretty badly and then began to blot the gush of blood with nail polish remover. The other manicurist gave her some powder to stop the bleeding but it seems the damage was done. My hand swelled up over the next few days due to the cut and the manicure was completely ruined. The nail polish on my toes also only lasted 2 days before chipping off even though I only wore sandals. Now, the massage, that was a different story! Our spa package also had a wonderful massage included and I have to say, this might have been the best massage I have ever had. It was deep and relaxing, just what the doctor ordered. If I were to come back I would skip the fluffy stuff and go straight to the massage. It was magical and I believe you still get to use the facilities if you just get a massage. The robes were comfortable and the amenities were fantastic. Maybe next time I will come for tea and stay for a massage. read more

This was my second time coming here. The first was for a yelp elite event the staff was just as friendly. I had won a gift basket from that event. I chatted with the ladies at the front desk of the spa while I waited to receive the gift basket. Thanks for the great service. read more

I was in town for a week and figured I'd take advantage of a break from scheduled activities to get a facial. The spa is very nice and the fact that it's technically a basement works in its favor by blocking out city noise. I scheduled an appointment for a fitness facial in the middle of the afternoon on a week day and the spa was not crowded at all. The lounge is a little crowded and the prep area that is between the changing rooms and the bathrooms is very narrow. Overall, I had a good experience, but as the aesthetician was discussing my skin care needs, she recommended a peel that would cost "a little more" on top of the facial. I said yes figuring it was $25-35 more on top of the $110 facial, but no. The peel was an additional $60. Bad on me for not asking the exact price, but to me, 55% of the original price does not equal "a little more". read more

I had a rejuvenation package which is a massage and body wrap. It was fabulous, the best massage I've had. Ask for Ida she makes the whole thing enjoyable and relaxing. The sauna and showers are nice I didn't spend too much time in the facilities since I had a 80 minute massage and 80 minute wrap. Definitely would go again. read more

I used the Brown Palace Spa for my bridal hair services only. I scheduled a trial after which I wasn't thrilled with the results. I decided to make another appointment and they comped the appointment. I left that hair trial happy and knowing what style I would have on my wedding day. I also scheduled hair appointments for my 6 bridesmaids, mil, sil and mom. Everyone was very pleased with their hair which is usually not the case when you have that many people. After a year of living in Denver, I decided it was time to find a hair stylist here, rather than flying back to New York every 6-8 weeks for a trim. Seriously - talk about attachment issues. After reviewing a ton of salons, I decided it was time to take the plunge. The Brown Palace Spa was close to my apartment, had decent reviews, and a good price point ($60 for a trim). I made a same-day appointment with one of their two hairstylists on staff. While it's hard NOT to be impressed with the Brown's grandeur, it quickly diminished as I was assisted to a dark for the hair cut. Yes, a DARK ROOM TO CUT HAIR. No windows, dim wattage - I should have bolted. Instead, I was way too polite and let him hack away, all the while he insulted the last cut I had. Sorry, buddy, this cut came from one of the leading salons in NYC. Your insults are completely not warranted. After a way-too-long discussion on my bangs (not blunt! face framing! use the texturizing thingies!), I resigned to the fact that I was just going to have to deal with his "creation". In all honesty, the front of my hair wasn't horrible, but the bangs and back were very much so. The back of my hair was uneven, there's no other way to put it. In checking out, I was informed that 20% gratuity was automatically charged to my bill (as standard Brown procedure), and was encouraged to tip more. I'm all for tipping beyond 20% for a beauty service if deserving - but this totally was not. After months of growing out and strategic use of bobby pins (and, of course, sobbing as soon as I returned home), I finally summoned the courage to visit Jay at Antoine du Chez, who righted all wrongs (seriously, go see him). Needless to say, I would not return to the Brown for any type of hair service. Ever. read more
