I got a massage from Mary of The Spa Room, and it is by far the best massage I have ever received. While most spas make you pick between a relaxation massage and a deep tissue massage, Mary actually soothed and relaxed my muscles for most of the session and then worked on my stressed shoulders/upper back for the end. The massage itself was phenomenal, and I felt both relaxed and pain-free afterward. The Spa Room is quite cozy. Even though it's conveniently located on Wisconsin, I felt like I had stepped away from the city and into a soothing oasis while I was there. Mary was very friendly and inviting, and sat down with me to try to understand what type of massage I wanted before it began. I went here with a gift certificate, and after reading the reviews here, booked a 50 min appointment (with a silk glove enhancement) with Stephanie. I definitely recommend Stephanie! It was about a month before my wedding, and we discussed where we'd like to focus on at the beginning of my appointment. She was on time and did the full 50 minutes (I hate when they cut it short "to give me time to unwind"), and the whole session was so relaxing I fell asleep towards the end! I think that's the best indicator of a good massage :) I was so happy with her that I booked her again right afterward just before the wedding, and she again delivered and made me a very relaxed and happy bride-to-be. I also remember that Obama was visiting in the area that day and I was worried of being late with all the detours, but they were understanding of that as well. Nice massage - esp. the scalp add-on. And, I'd done something to my ankle a few days earlier, and whatever the masseuse did, she got ithe kink out, because it no longer hurt after that. I was a tad disappointed with the facial part (rose water something - fine, but not a deep cleanse at all) and the body exfoliation was kind of lame too - they just brush over your limbs with this holey glove and that's it. I feel compelled to write review for this place as it was the best massage I have had in a while. First, I was running late (approx. 6 min) and panicking. I could not figure out how to unlock the door as I was nervous. Tyler my masseuse walked out to open the door. I apologized for being late and he was so nice and comforting. He told me not to worry about it and they scheduled enough time between sessions. I was a little bit relieved. The reception area is very nice and I was asked to fill out a form. It was my first time to have a hot stone massage. He asked a few questions before he started. The background music was soothing and relaxing. I've gone to Mary off and on for probably five years now. Recently I've gone to work on my jaw. I've had jaw tightness/soreness and constantly "clicking" for the past 15 years. I've asked my dentist and he's said it was probably TMJ but because I wasn't causing any damage to my teeth it wasn't something to worry about. It was still painful occasionally though so I asked Mary if it was something she could do something about and was pleasantly surprised. Wonderful relaxing massage! I purchased the Groupon, so had the wild rose facial, hot stones and massage. I booked on-line, which was effortless. On the day of my appointment, there was construction outside the building, and the Spa Room door was unmarked with a sign (it's suit 202, upstairs, only door without glass) but fortunately Mary, the masseuse and apparently owner, called me about 20 minutes before my appointment, and explained both of these problems and how to get inside. This was the first of the little things they did that made it such a great experience. The rooms are beautifully decorated, and simply walking inside made me feel calmer and more relaxed. Another little factor that helped was the peaceful friendly relationship between the nice receptionist (didn't get her name) and Mary. The massage itself was amazing. Mary reviewed how I wanted my massage, was very soothing, and explained exactly what I should be doing, which helped set me at easy. I'm not new to massages, but I have a lot of energy, so her soothing presence was great. The oils that she used smelled amazing, were nice and warm, and have left my skin feeling soft even in the middle of winter. As for the facial and shoulder massage, it was great. I have sensitive skin, and the wild rose facial made it feel soft and gave it a nice glow (yes! glow!) without any of the usual problems of redness or breaking out. Like many of us, time at the computer has taken its toll on my shoulders, and Mary patiently worked through the knots. It was not very painful, but she did a deep massage, which I appreciate. I redeemed an Amazon deal last night for a hot stone massage and wild rose facial cleanse. I arrived 20 minutes early, and Sally was happy to start the treatment early. The reception area is clean and inviting. The massage was absolutely amazing. I told Sally that I wanted the full body massage but with special emphasis on my neck and shoulders, and the balance was perfect. The wild rose treatment included a face massage, extra attention to my neck and shoulders, and a gorgeous scalp massage that felt wonderful. Since the massage room is small and right next to the reception area, I occasionally heard people speaking outside, but it did not distract me from the experience. Overall, incredible treatment and highly recommended. I left so blissed out that it took me 4 stops on the metro to realize I was going home in the wrong direction! read more

I really enjoyed the Couple's Massage Class my husband and I took with Mary. She was excellent - very knowledgeable, encouraging, and friendly. She went above and beyond to make sure we really understood the basic techniques - spending as much time as needed with each of us until we got the movements down. Mary is wonderful!! I took advantage of the Groupon special for the Massage 101 class for couples. It was sooooo awesome! Who knew massage was an art...or a science...whichever you prefer ;-) Mary was extremely patient with my boyfriend and I (I struggled more than he, so she dedicated most of the time to teaching me). She actually ran over time, but she never rushed us. She made sure to address any issues we had or preferences for massage, as if we were getting actual massages. Although we were very aware that we were in a "class setting", it was very therapeutic and very relaxing. My boyfriend even fell asleep lol. I had a Living Social for a hot stone massage and Wild Rose facial cleans (or something like that). I have never had a massage before, so I don't have much to compare to. The massage therapist (don't remember his name...Tyler?) was very professional and is definitely knowledgeable and passionate about massage therapy. The massage was good, but I don't feel the need to get a massage again. But I think I just don't like massages. I liked the facial cleanse, my skin was smoother afterwards. My only gripe is that the table was kind of uncomfortable, which actually left me feeling more sore than when I arrived. read more

I have seen the light and will now not go anywhere else. To echo what others have said, The Spa Room is not one of these pretentious spas, but a calm, peaceful, simple, and lovely place. I go to Tyler for massage (he is also a Feldenkrais practitioner) and it is an experience unlike any other I've had with massage. As other reviewers have said, it is *honestly* the best massage I've ever had. Tyler has PhD-level knowledge of the human body. Besides feeling absolutely terrific, I have learned a lot about my body over the last few months. I highly, highly recommend the Spa Room and Tyler, with one caveat... I love this place! I wish I could afford to go here more often. I first went a couple of years ago and got hooked on Mary's massages. The last few times, however, she's been unavailable so I've seen other massage therapists. They've all been good but nothing lives up to Mary's massages. Someday I hope to be able to afford to be a monthly customer here. It should be noted, however, that this place isn't really a "spa". It's good for a massage but there's not a relaxing lounge area with snacks and robes and whatnot. I relocated from Pittsburgh where I had an excellent massage therapist. I have been trying out many massage service sites using groupon - well I really hit the spot or should I say Sally hit the spot. This was one of the best treatments I have ever had. The experience has been consistently repeated with several subsequent treatments Sally is professional she runs on time, creates a relaxed environment - you are the only thing on her mind during your session, she is pleasant and engages in conversation - but stays 100% focused during your treatment. She has a good sense of adjusting her technique based upon any tension she feels during the treatment. She is a very competent professional and provides a high quality service. The building that the spa room resides in is an apartment building and while it seems odd on the first take, once you enter the suite and especially when you are in a treatment room, the oddness seems of no consequence. The spa room also provides raiki therapy and I would be interested in reading a post form someone who has received this service form the Spa room. Five stars for Sally and the Spa Room read more

I have a had A LOT of massages in my 34 yeas on planet earth and this one was really one of the best ones. I had Sally. She was so kind and inquisitive about the pressure, any pain and letting me know everything that was going to happen during my massage and facial. You know how you go to some places and it is hard to relax or you try to relax for a few minutes and then you just tense up thinking about all the things you have to do after the massage? Well...I actually forgot about all the things I had to do the whole time. I went on the Groupon deal and sometimes those can be shady, but this one was well worth it and I am super satisfied with the service. The hot stones were a plus. She used them in such a way that really benefited my muscles.
