I think it was strategically very very, very smart to have potato chips alongside because it was just the perfect little thing to munch on while you're eating your sandwich if things fall out--then you just eat it right up with your chip. We were looking for somewhere new to grab lunch and decided to try The Spinning Gyro. It's a small place but someone put thought into the space. It's pretty with beautiful hanging lanterns. You order at the counter and they'll bring it out to your table when it's ready. We ordered the carrot tarator, the chicken gyro on Turkish bread and a beef gyro in a pita with a side of tzatziki. I had this place before in Troy under a different name I believe. My review is based solely on their vegan offerings here as I haven't tried anything else. The vegan food here is not very wowing. It lacks flavor and I feel is overpriced. The Turkish bread is the best thing about the gyro, which is completely empty. There was one thin slice of seitan and a piece of lettuce and tomato. I ordered with baba ganoush, and white and hot sauce as well but did not taste any hot sauce or any baba ganoush. I saw it on there, but it was flavorless. I also think it would be worth the money if it came with fries, not potato chips.... I would probably never order from here again unless the prices went way down for the vegan gyro or unless it came with fries and not chips. Or maybe offer pita chips and hummus as the side. Not worth it in my opinion. I'm sure their specialty is lamb or meat so just want to stress this is a VEGAN review only. Discovered a great gyro place a couple of blocks from the Hilton Albany called The Spinning Gyro. I literally was going to a pizza joint that was across the street and decided...I rather have a gyro! The place is very clean and well decorated with traditional paintings and objects. I was greeted by Enes, he was friendly, welcoming and seemed like he was genuinely interested in doing business with me. I looked over the menu which has a variety of delicious looking items. He said if I had any question, feel free to ask. I ended up choosing a beef and lamb gyro along with a chicken gyro and mozzarella sticks. While I waited, Enes offered me a cup of traditional tea. For whatever you order you are given a great quantity of food that is delicious and flavorful. Even the mozzarella sticks came with a red sauce that had a nice kick to it. After ordering I was offered a traditional tea while I waited. The service was fast and efficient and I plan to go back to try other items they have. After a medical appointment at Albany Med my wife and I and our daughter enjoyed lunch at The Spinning Gyro, our first visit to this Turkish restaurant across South Pearl from the MVP Arena. Enis(sp?) -- we learned his name later -- patiently answered our questions as we ordered and then made changes to our order. He was gracious and patient, always smiling while at the same time caring for other customers. We ordered beef and lamb gyros wrapped in foil, a generous Greek salad and shiny stuffed grape leaves. While we waited for our order, he served us strong Turkish tea in little clear tea glasses on diminutive saucers and refreshed our cups throughout our meal. Enis was remarkably serving and ingratiating, it was apparent he did not simply work there; so we asked him point blank: "Are you the owner?" In short, as a young man -- he is still young -- he and his family left Turkey for a good life in America and created this restaurant where his mother is a chef. His is a delightful story, too long for this review; come ask him to share it with you some time! After a short wait, Enis served us our piping hot meal, Wow! What a scrumptious culinary delight! Fresh lamb cradled in vegetables bathed in a savory sweet sauce. Afterwards he served us Baklava no doubt crafted by a master Mediterranean pastry chef; it was finger-licking delectable! We asked Enis afterwards why everything we tasted was so delicious. "We make it with love," he responded simply with his trademark smile. Was looking for something quick near a hotel post conference prior to heading to the airport and ended up here based on Yelp ratings. The place was packed upon arrival with lots of take out orders being placed and about half the tables occupied with people dining in. It was a bit loud when trying to place my order so I think I passed on some topping options that I would have liked to have included. As such, my gyro was a little plain tasting even though I did order the hot sauce. There were plenty of 'regulars' picking up orders so this is definitely a local favorite. It came with a generous portion of meat, rice, french fries, pickled onions, Turkish bread and a small portion of salad. I requested both sauces on the side. A yogurt mint sauce (delicious) and a hot sauce which tasted like straight up Frank's hot sauce. The meat was chewy which told me it was authentic and not processed. It was very tasty and well seasoned. I was very impressed with the spinach and feta burek. Similar to Greek Spanakopita it had a homemade crust and great texture and taste. We also had an order of Mosaic cake. It came with two small pieces and had a nice light crumb and had a pleasing chocolate flavor. We got the food delivered and it was fast and plenty warm. I can't describe how good the food was here. Everything was mouth watering. Came to grab a quick meal, ended up becoming one of my favorites. The ambiance is very minimal with different paintings around the wall and couple of small tables to sit around. The quality of the food is overwhelmingly delicious. If someone asked me to eat here everyday, I would have no problem. The service was great too. I got a kofte kabab sandwich with extra sauce and it was really good. I was excited reading the reviews, went there this evening to takeout. Ordered the Greek gyro. Meat was dry and tough as tripe, the pita was hard on the edges, dried out & cold. We were in town for a Pickleball tournament, opted for something near our hotel with good reviews, unfortunately we got food that shouldn't be served. I also got soup, it was ok, a little greasy, but a least it was warm. My friends meal was also a big disappointment. My one star review is generous and here's why: 1) The food is rubbish. There is literally no taste in the beef/lamb gyro. The meat pieces are dry, hard and chewy when a gyro is supposed to be moist and tender. The only thing half decent were the fries and they didn't bother putting salt on them or even in the takeout bag. 2) Their card machine wasn't functioning so I had to go find an ATM for cash. 3) They advertise closing at 8:30pm. I went in at 7pm to dine in and sat down. The woman behind the counter took my order and I was eagerly expecting a decent meal. While I was waiting she walked to the entrance and closed the door and started turning off the lights. I knew I was hosed at this point because she looked intent on closing shop. She then went and told the chefs "finito guys we are closing." A customer walked in right after and she turned him down and said they were closed. 4) She brings over my food in a takeout bag to which my reaction in my mind was wow WTF??? If people think this is a good gyro then you lot don't know a good gyro. I spent a week in Turkey and I can tell you one thing, the gyro here isn't even fit to serve a dog. Stay away from this place. Oh and almost $20 for this? Not worth $10. read more
