Today is my last day in Newfoundland after a week's vacation here. While I'm sad that I can't stay longer, I'm thrilled that I discovered this amazing restaurant before I left. In fact, it was so good for lunch, I decided to make a return trip this evening for dinner -- and both meals were phenomenal. For lunch, I tried the tofu sandwich, and I have seldom enjoyed a sandwich more. It came on their in-house baked whole-grain bread, along with tomato, fresh greens, hummus, a light balsamic dressing, and a lemon tahini spread. For dinner, I ordered their enchilada -- and not only was it delicious, it was enormous. Although I had to wait about 30 minutes for a table because it was so busy, this was a great final meal in St. John's. Highly, highly recommended -- you won't be disappointed. read more

One of my favorite spots in St. john's, this place seems to have changed a bit last time I was here two years ago. They got a late night taco menu, an organ in the corner, and a different taste in music lol. I'd say the menu hasn't changed too much, but the plastic wrapped menu made it feel a bit cheaper. The dishes did not taste cheaper though that's for sure. I ordered the Tempeh Sandwich ($17) special which had a delicious BBQ sauce, shredded carrots, hummus mix, sliced tomato, and other greens. As I remembered from years ago it was a jammed packed sandwich with the highlight being the bread made with a mix of flours and molasses. The soft and slightly sweet bread is definitely what I remember this place for. Can't say that about other restaraunts downtown St John's. I was considering giving this place a four but the server may have caught on and brought me a free sample of bread after chatting about it with him. Gotta respect that NL kindness and hustle. Decent 5 in my books and I'd say it's a must visit if your looking for good vegetarian food in St. John's. Just please get nicer looking menus. Small and cozy place. The menu has a lot of character to it, and the service was wonderful. We ended up ordereing the black bean burrito, which was really good, except for the fact the salsa wasn't spicy at all. If it were that would make the meal exceptionally good. read more

I came to the Sprout twice during my vacation in St. John's. The staff were super friendly, the music playing in the restaurant was amazing (think Conscious Club - Vulfpeck), and the food was really good. I ordered the Pad Thai and was super impressed with the pad thai sauce; hard to put my finger on why it was so amazing but I guess that's just good food and creativity on their part. Bravo. My friend had ordered the Cajun Burger and it was also really good. We both agreed the home fries were the highlight of that dish, more so over the burger, and the added fresh pineapple on the plate was a welcomed addition. For dessert I had a cookie the first night and came back the next night to try the brownie... nothing to rave about and not the most exciting options; they were good but not "I'll order either of those both again next time" good. All in all, this place is great! The staff are cool! The food is good! You should definitely give this place a try! read more

I'm always impressed with this spot whenever I dine. Popped in this afternoon for lunch and was quickly sat, quickly served and the service is friendly and gives the really welcoming and helpful attitude without the "in your face" vibe some servers can give off. The menu is great to glance over, wide variety and clearly labels the gluten free options. (I've recently had to cut gluten out of my diet for health purposes, which makes eating at restaurants a hassle, but they cut out the work for me!) And I was really impressed the entire dessert menu was gluten free, they even sell small bags of gluten free flour by the door! I highly recommend stopping in for a meal and having a seat in the small, intimate dining room with a relaxing and quiet atmosphere. Having subsisted basically on Cliff bars for 5 days during the first part of my trip in smalltown Newfoundland, I was happy to visit St. John's, where I heard about The Sprout. Yay vegetarian food! After putting up with my grumpiness throughout the week, my omnivorous pal joined me to dinner here. Things got off to a rough start with a server who was probably the least friendly person I met in Newfoundland. We ordered our food and while we were waiting, noticed the most horrific looking beetle lurking about the window by which we were sitting. We switched spots because it was scary. My friend and I both ordered pad thai, which was made with cashews instead of peanuts. It was alright but nothing to write home about. We also drank tea, and I got a piece of vegan chocolate cake to go, elated to see a vegan dessert. The icing was hard as though the cake had been sitting around for a long while. As a vegan baker myself I would probably not sell something of this quality to someone. We gave The Sprout a second chance as again, it was one of the only options around for vegan food. We had a different server who still wasn't the friendliest. They were out of nearly everything; all of the desserts but one piece of pumpkin pie, and basic ingredients such as beets and other major components to their meals. My other omniovorous friend enjoyed her lentil burger, and the food we did get was alright. I see this place being a little inconsistent (or consistently mediocre), and if I lived in St. John's would probably just cook for myself rather than go here. read more

The food was wonderful but the service was the worst I have ever experienced! We loved our meals, delicious, fresh, vegan, huge portions. Baked goods were awesome, kept coming back for more, but we didn't sit in to eat again during our trip. Never got water or coffee top ups. In fact, our server never came back after taking our order. Someone else dropped off mains, way too soon after appetizer. No one checked how our food was. They didn't wait to see if we needed anything (I needed ketchup and no one was ever around to even ask) I eventually got up and got someone to get me some water. There were lots of other tables, some being served, some being neglected. I heard several other mishaps while we sat there (a waitress apologized to one table for gving their app to a different table and letting them eat it! Others didn't receive there appetizers at all, just mains) Honestly, our server seemed high as a kite. This would be a great restaurant. Get your staff in order! Still giving 5 stars because of food and want to support anyone giving vegan options! read more

I miss Stella's ... The Sprout is good but it's not fabulous, delicious food that the other restaurant that started with an S consistantly served. Tonight though the food was excellent. Tasty, nicely presented. My mouth is watering thinking about the leftovers I'm having for lunch tomorrow. I had the Poutine. They made it with brown rice, mushroom miso gravy, layered with potatoes, shredded carrots, tofu and spinach. Pay attention to their descriptions. When they say salty, they mean salty. My sister had the special, a chick pea curry, she liked it. Cleaned her plate; stuffed herself really. Me though, I thought it had way too much salt and lime juice. Other sister had their menu chick pea curry. Excellent! Other good stuff to know about a restaurant. The service was great, the atmosphere is cool and laid back, the art work (which you can buy) is worth a look, and the their prices are low. And oh yeah, the artichoke appetizer was delicious, as was the wine (Long Flat). I am a fan really. Just not a raving fan. read more

Let me start by saying that my service experience was stellar. No issues at all-that being said I was seated at the counter and was there on my own. Not much to get mixed up. I had the falafel entree with the Sprout salad, and asked for a side of avocado and their homemade bread. The falafel was a mite dry, but everything else was AMAZING. And they have draft beer! Ordered for an office function because we have two vegetarians and it was their party. We were all impressed. The order was delivered on time and for the quality of the food and the quantity ( no one went hungry !) the price was pretty reasonable. The food was awesome. The highest accolade came from my bf ( total carnivore) who ate my leftovers and said " dandy sandwich lets eat there next time we wander downtown" Cant say enough good things and will reorder. Poyo, the midnight haunt for Sprout, makes some of the objectively greatest Mexican burritos I've had. All vegetarian, the flavours are so great that you really just don't care that you're not getting your carnivore on. I stuck with refried beans in my burrito (which I will always default to over soy meal), and it was a great snack... if you can call it that. They are only open late night, but serve full size meal burritos - meaning, bring your appetite! You won't be leaving hungry, and in fact, it's more likely you'll be slightly uncomfortable from the deliciousness you just consumed. Even if you're not a night person, try and make it to 11pm. You won't be disappointed and while your sleep cycle might not thank you for it, your tummy certainly will! read more

This restaurant is mediocre at best. The service is often the worst in the city. Twice I was literally the only table in the restaurant and the waitress messed up my order! The waitress realized her mistake when she brought out the food and gave a less than half hearted apology with her less than half hearted service. I go every few months because I really hope it gets better. It's affordable but the food is mostly bland. The city hasn't had many vegetarian options in the past which has made The Sprout the go to restaurant here. Hopefully they will get their act together now that there are more vegetarian options sprouting up downtown. read more

I'm not a vegetarian and never really considered eating vegan meals but I have been impressed so far by the food at the Sprout. You need to be there early for lunch at least 11:45 to get a seat. My favorites are the black bean burrito and the tofu pad Thai. Sometimes the service can be a bit slow but it doesn't deter me from going on a regular basis. They have outdoor seating which is nice for a long Friday lunch on a sunny day. read more

We stopped by this charming place a few days ago and had a tasty vegetarian meal, including a lentil burger, a vegetarian poutine with spinach, and a cup of chili. Everything tasted fine; the lentil burger was particularly good. Service was kind of slow and forgetful, though--for example, we ordered the miso soup, not the chili. But the chili was good, so we didn't make a fuss about it. We had a pretty tasty dessert, too--some kind of cranberry crisp. But no ice cream!? I really wish the Sprout would strive to improve itself in terms of consistency of the food and quality of the service provided. I have eaten at this establishment quite a number of times over the past five years, and each time I have been hopeful that things will click into place. Sometimes the food is good, sometimes it is not. A couple of times my fiance was served food that was cold in the middle (as if someone took it out of the fridge and didn't heat it up properly). One time he politely asked for it to be heated up a little more and the servers brought the food back and it was still cold in the middle so he just gave up and ate it cold. One time I had brunch with the girls and all of our potatoes tasted like they were cooked in rancid oil. The list goes on. Unfortunately the only consistent thing about this restaurant is that the service is usually slow, unpleasant and forgetful - last time I was there I had to actually get the menus myself because we were forgotten for about 10 minutes after being seated... I actually haven't been back there in about 6 months because I am tired of dealing with the same old issues. Unfortunately St. John's doesn't have a lot of other vegetarian options so I usually just cook at home...which is far more delicious! :) The owners/servers of the Sprout should take a little training trip to Toronto and eat at the Fresh vegetarian restaurants there (there are three locations I think). They could really learn a lot about quality of food and prompt/friendly service from that company. read more

Quite good vegetarian and vegan food. And a real pleasure to find here in St. John's. I was afraid that I was going to be eating chips all week. I ate here twice this week and am headed back now. The staff are great too. Super friendly and funky. Its too bad they didn't have any of the Storm Brewery beer in stock. I guess its a super small local brew. Next time. Visited here for a late night snack on my way home. I didn't have high hopes as I am a burrito snob but wow I was surprised and impressed! I tried their daily special, Spicy Black Bean burger! I was at first hesitant as I've ordered Black Bean burgers in other vegetarian restaurants and the texture was absolute mush. The sprout was great! The food was perfect, we had artichoke dip for an app and falafel for the entrée. Tons of gluten free options and the menu has icons so you can choose without bothering the server. The server was friendly and the atmosphere very calm and pleasant. I've been eating at The Sprout 20+ times a year since the place opened - more than 200 meals, and I've never had a bad experience. If you've ever tried The Naam in Vancouver (Kits), you'll get the vibe at The Sprout. Obviously a smaller menu (we can only wish for a 24 hour veg restaurant in St. John's) but some of the menu items are similar, e.g., The Sprout's delicious salty miso gravy "poutine" (The Naam calls it the Gold Dragon). Vegan and gluten-free options, reasonably priced and fast service. The staff can sometimes be a little flaky (mostly good, so 3 stars there) but this isn't fine dining so no real complaints. read more

At 7:00 we entered and waited 20 minutes for a table. Our two children under 4 and my husband and I ordered and were told there was no avocado, while the grocery stores are bulging at the seams with them in giant bins, 3 for $1. There was no sprouts, also well stocked in the grocery stores, and not to mention the name of the restaurant is the Sprout. And there was no house red available. I asked for soy cheese instead of cheddar which they don't even have. This bothered me since it is the only place in town that caters to people on a plant-based diet. The table that was seated after us got their "food" a good 25 minutes before us too. When the food arrived 45 minutes after we were seated and our children were crying and jumping around causing a scene, there was no fries for our daughter because they didn't have enough and were making more. We were assured we'd get them when they were ready. We also asked for a side plate which was forgotten. The potatoes we both had were so undercooked that my fork could not cut through them and the chick pea burger my husband go was as dry as sawdust and cold. The fries never came, good thing I ordered something extra for the poor child. When I told our waitress we didn't get our fries as she took all our half eaten garbage away and we were putting on our coats, she asked " Do you still want them?" good question!!!!! then she asked " Do you want me to take them off the bill?" Umm YES please! No by, I'd like to pay for the undercooked potato cubes that never came anyway! Last but not least, every time I looked for our waitress or another waitress they were behind the counter stuffing food into their mouths sneakily. I guess they thought no one was watching. Well, the boss certainly wasn't because if he/she was and if they knew what was good for them they would fire those girls and the "cooks" faster than an avocado can ripen. I guess that's a bad analogy since they obviously don't know about avocados at this vegetarian restaurant. This place gets 1 1/2 stars. 1 because they had a change table in the womens washroom and 1/2 because there was some dirty toys on the shelf for our hungry children to play with. read more

The Sprout used to be one of my favourite spots in St. John's.... not anymore. My partner and I have made a vow to not go there anymore because it's a waste of money and time :(. The last time we went service was SO slow and the food was just super meh. The menu is uninspired and also didn't make me feel very well. We sat on the patio and there was one or two other guests inside. And two or more servers. However, he took forever to get to us and bring our menus, take our order, for our food to actually come...etc. Everytime he went inside we felt like we would maybe never see him again. But seriously, we felt like he forgot about us or something, which is not good considering the amount of guests in the resto. Service was also kind of awkward and just bad overall. If The Sprout had any competition for being the only veg resto in St. John's I feel like it would be on it's way out of business. It's sad, because I feel like it used to be decent. If you're travelling to St. John's and are looking for a healthy spot to go eat I think you can get better veg options at other restaurants in town. I also wouldn't consider most of the food actually healthy. We had also gotten a dessert to go and it was mushy and inedible. I didn't eat it, which is honestly rare for me because I love sweets and will eat them even if they're not that great. But this was gross. Not sure if it was old or just poorly made. This place was awesome! I had the sweet potato soup (of the day) and it was just such a nice way to warm up on a brisk day in St. John's. I was told their Pad Thai is the specialty but I opted for the bravocado sandwich instead - best idea I had all day. Basically its brie cheese and avocado slices on soft delicious sliced whole grain bread. AMAZING. I wish I could describe it better! The one thing that bummed me out was that they did take a lot longer than I expected. It was worth it, but I wish I would have known so that I could call in advance. read more
