I've eaten the shrimp gumbo here for years, always very good. The restaurant shrimp or seafood gumbos in this Cajun area are pretty standardized in that all the best places like Pat's, Forest, Dupuy's, Fezzo's, Don's, & St. John offer nearly identical gumbos. Much better than anything in New Orleans ! Just try it, please. My fav's here are the stuffed shrimp, fried shrimp in corn flour, corn grits, & the small filet mignon. Others are stuffed potato & bread pudding. Occasionally, their daily specials will be very good. Caveats; Arrive very early for Saturday supper. Father Vidrine's 4:00 Mass celebrations @ nearby Saint Martin de Tours Church are very popular; all of the folks arrive en-masse for supper right afterwards at 5:00PM. Everything was soooo good! Service was great, we had a party of 20+ and our server killed it. The shrimp dinner comes with so much stuff it's crazy, ordering anything else feels wrong. We were out for our weekend drive, and decided to visit St. John restaurant. Nice area with a private parking lot, but especially liked the window seating, which was cozy with a family feel. We ordered our drinks, and was given a basket of warms rolls which were light and airy, and the cinnamon butter was a nice touch. The appetizer was the crab boulettes were great, filled with lump crab. We were off to a great start. Our entrees were the porterhouse pork chops, which was tender, and the peach honey glaze went very well, baked sweet potato was a good touch, and the grilled shrimp dish a bit salty however still tasted great rice or noodles would have offset this. What a fantastic hidden cajun gem! Not sure why we just tried it for the first time but I'm so glad we did. This is some of the best cajun food you can find in the coolest building that's almost like a big wooden house. We shared the crab claws, I got the crab dinner and my wife got the shrimp pasta. Shrimp platter with corn grits was good minus the gumbo tasted a little bit like burnt roux this time. Service was good but food took a long time to come out but it was a Saturday. Entering the restaurant was like going back to my childhood days. The building reminded me of my grandfathers old grocery store from the 1950's. The ambiance sets the tone for a great experience. Our waitress (I forgot her name) met us as we entered and allowed us time to look around and admire the interior. We were immediately presented with fresh baked bread and what looked like homemade butter on the side. The butter flavor had a familiar taste that we could not figure out, but we liked it! Our waitress explained that it was butter mixed with Steens Cane Syrup, what a simple combination that enhanced the bread. We enjoyed the bread rather than add an appetizer. For our main dishes, I had the Tropical Pork with Teriyaki sauce that included grilled pork tenderloin medallions, grilled onions and grilled pineapple with a light teriyaki sauce. I picked the grilled vegetables as my side item and they were so tender and grilled perfectly. When I mixed the vegetables with the teriyaki sauce, my palate was very pleased. My wife had the Chef Craig's Original jumbo lump crab cakes and they did not disappoint. She absolutely loves grilled crab cakes but she is very critical if they are full of fillers. This crab cake exceeded her expectations as she said it was near the top of all the crab cakes she has eaten. Very flavorful and full of genuine crab meat! She also had the grilled vegetables as her side item and was also pleased with the dish. No appetizer meant we had room for dessert and we made the correct choice as the Crème Brûlée was spot on excellent with strawberries, blueberry and whipped cream on top. We will certainly return and bring friends. There are so many other items on the menu that we want to experience. We can't stop raving about this restaurant and telling everyone about our experience. read more

Awesome food! Walked in for early lunch and were immediately greeted by a friendly hostess, we were seated on a sunny front porch with a bayou view. Our waiter came shortly and we were able to get our drinks and some delicious house baked bread within a few minutes. My husband and I shared the crab platter which was just the right amount of food to share. He ordered an extra cup of chicken and sausage gumbo. Their roux is rich and dark, homemade and so acadiana. Was delicious. A local that was sitting near by told us to try the crab cakes so we put an order of crab cakes to take home for a snack later. So. My wife said let's go to this place and I'm glad we did !!! I've got to give this restaurant 5 stars because upon walking in, we were immediately greeted by the friendliest staff and was seated right away. The waiter, Ben, was phenomenal and was at our table recommending and taking our order. While we were eating that amazing bread, with the honey butter, the owner of the establishment was walking around talking to everyone. We really felt like family and not like just another customer. Now, let's talk about the food. For an app, we got the friend mushrooms. For dinner, I got the seafood platter and my wife got the Filet. I had to sneak a small bite of my wife's, perfectly cooked, Filet and OMG!!! probably one of the best steaks I've had the pleasure of eating. Mandatory appetizer! The seafood platter was big.. catfish, oysters, crab claws, fried shrimp, stuffed shrimp, stuffed crab, crab bouille (?)(fried crab cake ball) & bakes potato for my side.. Also, side salad & bread. Frog leg comes with the platter but I added the crab cake ball instead. Whole meal was fantastic & a great amount for a little cost. Revisited about a year later for my aunt's bday - definitely better this time around. We came during the lunch hour and you cannot beat a window seat overlooking the bayou! I had the shrimp dinner which came with shrimp gumbo, salad, fried, stuffed and sautéed shrimp and shrimp au gratin. I was very pleased with my meal. Such a beautiful place. This restaurant is worth a visit just for its ambience. The food is good, some things better than others, service is pretty good but the atmosphere is awesome. I recently brought my teenage daughter and my 9 year old son here for a night out. I chose St. John because my son was craving alligator and previous visits have taught me that this is where I find the best gator. That alligator was PERFECT. The crawfish egg rolls were also good. My daughter ordered the chicken capellini and that is what I wished I had gotten. Is was very tasty. However I ordered the chicken Pontchartrain and it was not so good. The chicken itself was cut obviously a breast cut in half. It was cut thin therefore came out very dry. They must prep the chicken for all their dishes the same. It does not work on this dish. I think the sauce is what saved it on the pasta for the capellini. The location is perfect for a nice stroll along the bayou after a heavy meal. We went at dusk so we really got to enjoy the twinkle lights across the way. Very nice place to go. read more

Upon walking in we were greeted by a man I assumed is the owner. He was very warm and inviting. After we were seated our server came in a timely manner and took our drink order. I informed her I was on keto and before I could ask for suggestions she said she didn't know anything about that. Fair enough I thought, so I just ordered a vodka soda which I enjoyed. My significant other ordered a margarita which he said had an odd "frothy" texture but he drank it anyway. He is not a picky person when it comes to food and we were in good spirits as we were celebrating our Valentine's Day dinner early. Our food took a bit as the server informed us they had just finished getting the food out for a large party. We were patient though. About 10 minutes later our server returned to inform us that they were out of the grilled veggies we had both ordered as our side as well as pretty much every other veggie I inquired about. This was really disappointing for me due to my diet restriction. I had actually looked at the menu beforehand to make sure I would be able to enjoy my meal before deciding upon going to this restaurant for our date. She then offered to put grilled mushroom on my steak which excited me so much that I asked if I could just get a bit extra and have that as my side. She said that she didn't think the kitchen would do that so I reluctantly decided to just get another salad. My boyfriend ordered the crawfish dinner and his gumbo came out first and he was not impressed. He is by no means a foodie and has a very simple palate so I was really surprised to hear him say he thinks there is too much file in the gumbo and his crawfish were rubbery. My steak and the rest of his meal came out a little after. The flavor my steak and the temperature of my steak was good however for the $38 price, I did not expect it to be so tough and hard to cut. My boyfriend loves etouffee and he didn't enjoy it or anything else on his plate. His main complaint seemed to be that the crawfish were rubbery. Anywho we did enjoy our time together but for the price that we paid, the quality just did not reflect. Needless to say, unfortunately we won't be dining here again. read more

Alligators and frog legs actually do taste like chicken. Frog legs are like roasted chicken and alligators are fried chicken. The servers were friendly and polite and our food came at a decent pace.
