The Stacks Coffee House is such a vibe and very much a "get in, lock in, and accidentally stay for three hours" kind of place. Wall to wall books, ceiling to floor cozy chaos, people on laptops doing serious focus work, and that soft lighting that makes you feel like you should absolutely be writing your novel or at least answering emails you've been avoiding. The community board alone is a whole moment... flyers everywhere, local artists, creatives, events, it basically tells you everything going on in the neighborhood if you just stand there long enough. Coffee is solid, space is super welcoming, and yes they do vegan pastries but they were sold out when we got there which just tells you everything you need to know. Popular for a reason. Love the energy, love the people, love the "we support local creatives and also mind our business" vibe. Highly recommend if you want a cute spot to work, people watch, or just feel like you're part of something a little more community centered. read more

If you love the idea of sipping coffee while surrounded by shelves of books, Stacks Coffeehouse is worth checking out. The vibe is cozy and a little mysterious thanks to the dim lighting and, as mentioned, shelves upon shelves of books. The space is definitely designed for lingering - there are plenty of tables to work or study from, bar seating with a view of the street, and space for small and larger groups. Depending on the day, you may not get a seat or at least not your preferred seat. Of course, as mentioned, one of the quirks here are the books everywhere. They have signs saying that they loan them out like a library, but to me it doesn't look like the books are organized in anyway. So it might be more for atmosphere than practicality. Food wise, they serve breakfast tacos until 1pm, and there's a good pastry selection, plus day-old baked goods available for half price. They do $1 drip coffee refills, but the coffee wasn't my favorite. All in all, great place for the vibe. Free street parking nearby. read more

I've been in a couple of times now, and both visits were great! The inside is spacious and has a warm vibe with all the books around you. We got coffees and breakfast tacos. The Stacks Coffeehouse place was PACKED on a Saturday morning. We arrived around 8:30AM and nearly every table was filled. There is one big table and several little 2-person tables. The ambience is very homey with the books on the walls and dimmed lights. There is some quiet music as well. Service was fast and kind. The staff kept up with the fast pace of the orders. 8oz latte was okay. It was not overly bitter and had a slight fruity taste. The coffee is pretty average in my opinion. I love that they sell tacos and that they host events in this space, which are all advertised inside. This cafe is not a good place for studying, however, since there are nearly no outlets and people kept coming in and out. It can get loud. Parking is free along the street. read more

I found myself in North Portland after a delivery I just completed. I was hungry and wanted a coffee. I did a search for nearby coffee shops and The Stacks Coffeehouse popped up. Street parking, but I didn't have far to walk. It's a really cool space with shelves and shelves of books! The coffee shop was teeming with patrons, looked like a lot of people were working on laptops. I was able to squeeze in at a spot that faced the street. I'm obsessed with The Stacks Coffeehouse. I really don't know what it is, but I feel so cozy and at home sitting at any of their little tables. All the full bookshelves, the soft warm lighting, the rain outside on a dark night. I'm literally waxing eloquent about it but I'm serious. I love that it's open later in the evening too. Another fun aspect is their creative writing nights on Tuesdays. They give you a writing prompt and leave you to free write for a couple hours. Such a fun idea! Their coffee is also really nice. They've successfully created the atmosphere of a little neighborhood library that has a coffee house. Wifi is decent. The staff are kind and helpful and the food of choice are what they call "tacos" - little flour tortillas filled with a variety of options - each runs you $4.50 - one is a snack, two makes a nice meal. Truly one of my favorite coffee shop atmospheres, and I've spent a LOT of time in a LOT of coffee shops. I drive from Vancouver at least once a week to relax (or knock out some work) at The Stacks. The books lining the walls (which are all available to check out!) make this place a book lover's paradise. It can get busy during peak coffee hours on Fridays, but everyone here is so friendly and strangers often share tables and start conversations with each other. I visited the spot on 7/5. I ordered a cappuccino and a breakfast taco. While the coffee and food were delicious, I ended up asking for a to-go cup because of the service. The barista was rude. She had attitude the entire time. I asked her where the lid and cups were located, she would point. Though helpful, she was not welcoming. Additionally, she was playing aggressive music fairly loud. As I left, I asked another customer, who moved from inside to the chairs outside, if she had been to this spot before. She said no, but did say she took her book outside because the noise was too loud. The atmosphere is inviting and I love the layout with the bookcases and roomy seating area.
