As you hike the wash, you pass by the…read moreCoyote Buttes North trailhead, aka The Wave, but don't be tempted to go if you don't have a permit! The rangers will catch you! To get to here, you will need to drive on House Rock Valley Road which is an unpaved road. I did it in a 2WD sedan, but made sure that the weather was dry so there was no mud. There's a large parking lot with a few composting toilets. You do need to pay for a permit - the trailhead allows you to use your credit card to pay and prints out a copy of the permit. Anyway, this is an awesome slot canyon! Follow the stream bed until you enter the canyon. It's a short canyon that leads to a petroglyph panel. There's a ladder section, but also an alternative trail if you have a dog or can't navigate the ladder. At the petroglyph panel, you can then explore the Buckskin Gulch narrows (the full Gulch is an overnight hike). I had to turn around at some point since there were huge puddles of water - some over knee deep that I didn't want to risk accidentally falling into when balancing on rocks. I would definitely visit again!!!

Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs is a designated wilderness area within the Vermillion Cliffs…read moreNational Monument, which straddles the border between Utah and Arizona and is approximately 40 miles East of Kanab, UT. This wilderness area wraps around the northern side of the monument and encompasses the Paria River canyon and other smaller, connected canyons. It is also the site of the famous landmark known as "The Wave," though that area (called 'Coyote Buttes North') is only accessible via permit; and such a permit can only obtained via a lottery system. But if, like us, you don't win that lottery, this beautiful area still has plenty to offer, namely: stunning slot canyon hiking. PCVC wilderness area is accessible via three trail-heads on two different roads off Hwy 89. We chose the Wire Pass trail-head off House Rock Road, which involved just over 20 miles of driving on a winding, sandy (and sometimes rutted) dirt road off the highway. (Note: this road is not passable after heavy rain). Our destination was the Paria River canyon itself, which can be reached from the the trail-head by passing through Wire Pass. Long story short, our hike was beautiful. Wire Pass itself narrowed from a wide 'wash' to a narrow slot canyon about 50 ft high, and we could feel the temperature drop about 10 degrees as we entered the latter. There was at least one semi-treacherous spot where a steep, blind climb-down over a large rock was required (I was glad to have long legs). The canyon opened up a bit at the confluence with Paria River canyon, before transforming again into a wider but much deeper slot canyon downstream. But due to the dangers of flooding in this narrow space, we ended up turning back before our planned turnaround point, since we sighted (and heard) some big thunderheads about 20 miles or so upstream. (We agreed not to die of stupidity). But we still had a great day. Other things you should know before visiting Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliff Wilderness: -- A permit is needed for backpacking overnight in Paria Canyon -- Don't think you can just sneak over to 'The Wave' without a permit. It is patrolled daily; and fines range from $1k to $10k. They've even been known to impound vehicles -- If hiking a long distance in Paria canyon, you will get wet; wading through some deep pools may be required (so bring water shoes and hiking poles) -- All poop must be packed out (You heard me) -- Local monsoon season is June - Sept; best avoided for flash flooding

In addition to the waterfalls, there is a large reservoir where you can fish, swim and boat. The park is located about 10 miles out of St. George, Utah. My good friend and I decided last spring (2023) to come and see the falls. I checked the park website to make sure they were running. The falls don't run every year so always make sure to check the park website before heading up here. We arrived early afternoon but there were way too many peeps so we left to return later. We came back close to 5:00pm and the crowds had thinned. We paid the $10 fee and enjoyed the falls. You have to climb up to the falls so be sure to wear some trusted footwear so you don't slip. So much water rushing over the beautiful red rocks. It was quite a show and I highly recommend if you find yourself in the area. Remember to Leave No Trace and take care of our public lands.

We pulled up thinking it would be a quick stop... and yeah, it is quick--but it's also surprisingly fascinating. This tiny half-acre park is literally tucked into a neighborhood, which feels weird at first (like, "am I lost?"), but then you walk up and boom--massive boulders covered in ancient carvings. The petroglyphs are believed to have been created by Native peoples thousands of years ago, and you can spot all kinds of shapes--humans, animals, spirals, and random symbols that still kind of feel like a mystery. What makes this place stand out is how ridiculously accessible it is. You park, walk maybe 20 feet, and you're face-to-face with real ancient rock art. No hike, no effort--just instant history. It's not a big, flashy attraction, so don't come expecting a full-on park experience. No bathrooms, no visitor center--just a small path, a couple benches, and the rocks. But honestly? That's part of the charm. If you're in St. George and want a quick, unique stop that feels a little off-the-beaten-path, this is it. It is in fact , not even an acre and only one or two rocks that have the petroglyphs on them....not a park!

When you start low, you can only go higher. There's something so very liberating about that--about…read moreknowing that you're as low as you're going to get--and that no matter what step you take forward, you're going to stumble higher. Beaver Dam Wash, besides being a small but relatively unknown national conservation area in the southwest corner of the state, also holds the state's low point. There's some disagreement on just how low that point is (I find most sources say it's 2350ft, but a geologist with the USGS was in the local paper many years ago saying it's probably more like 2178ft). No one disagrees that it's here in the wash, however. It's also Utah's hottest point, so let's get the safety talk about of the way now: come prepared. The thriving metropolis of Shivwits, UT doesn't exactly have a 24-hour big box store, so if you're going to make the trek all the way out here, fuel up in St. George (and maybe pack an extra canister) and bring all the water, food, and supplies you'll need. Ya, it's technically not too far at all from St. George, but when you get out there running those dirt roads it starts to feel a little bit lonesome, and you'll want to give yourself the freedom to explore, too. You'll want to explore, but it's not the most hospitable territory. You don't have any recreation facilities, at least that I saw. This is a national conservation area, not a national recreation area. The landscape is mostly brush and there are Joshua trees out this far, and you've got 60,000-plus acres to stretch out. Mostly it's about the dirt roads that wind and twist and turn and lead over through Arizona and Nevada. All motor vehicles must remain on designated roads, and not all roads are designated for OHVs or motor travel. Do your homework and get a map. Note that it's probably equally as popular to access this from the Arizona side, by going to Littlefield, AZ and heading north on the road out of Beaver Dam (HWY 91) and later it turns to a high clearance 4WD situation when you head back west into the wash. So, what's out here, really? Well, there's a neat confluence of different landscapes, so you get this funky variety of brush, Joshua trees, bighorn sheep, and other flora/fauna that are coming together. It's not in-your-face amazeballs, but if you're quiet and know what you're looking for, it's really something simple and special. Get out on foot and walk around. Just don't do it in the summer. It's extreme weather and totally inhospitable. I wish I could spend a lot of time here. Not too, too much... but sometimes you have to get low to appreciate the highs.

Take the first left onto State Route 59 and at 5.0 miles turn left on the gravel road. Travel 0.25 miles to the trailhead. Trailhead allows you to start at Jem or Deadhorse and make your way down into the valley or up top be going to More Cow Bell. You have a few options but the first part of Jem is downhill only after that all trails are bidirectional. It's a fun place to take the family since all the trails are easy with some moderate difficulty. Good for both hiking and mountain biking. There's a lot of open BLM land you can camp at too.

If you were to look at yoga studios in town, for the same price you will not only get a yoga studio, but a fitness facility and rock climbing! They also have free classes to members like a fitness class and other helpful classes. My favorite part about this gym is the vibe. Very friendly staff, management and people at the gym. They have a friendly atmosphere and so many people are willing to connect and be helpful for new people or people wanting to climb with someone. You won't find any "gym bro" type people. They are constantly changing climbing routes, so you will never get bored! I also appreciate they don't have hidden fees or contracts. If you want to pause your membership at anytime you can (for a nominal fee) as this avoids the signup fee. Definitely recommend!

A million years ago when I was in high school, I broke up with my boyfriend at this park. It was a…read moresad day, but I've had many great memories there since then (and even made amends with the boyfriend and we are on good terms now). Anyway, this park has been around forever and whether your memories are of the lush, green grassy areas or the adjacent recreational equipment, you probably have a story of your own. Hopefully there are more happy memories than sad ones like mine. Because it's centrally located and a large size, there are lots of markets or community events that are held here. There is a parking lot nearby as well as ample street parking. It's a great space to bring the St. George and surrounding community together.

There is a farmer market every Saturday. The hours for summer are 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (noon) MDT until October. Winter hours are from November to April 10 am - 2 pm. Closed the last 2 weeks of December and all of January for winter break. This park is huge, plenty of space for big or small families to congregate too. Area to play pickle ball, run, shade to relax, walk with your fur baby on a leash, walk along the pathway with your signing other (you get the idea), safe enough to walk by yourself too and plenty of space to set up family outdoor games. Bathrooms, drinking fountains, and plenty of parking. Parking, little side rant. If you are parking on a Saturday when the area is busy, then it sucks finding a spot. The vehicles start parking at entrances/exits, then it turns into a one-way battle of who is turning around. In my opinion, parking should not be allowed in those narrow entrances/exits. Otherwise, it is FUN, FUN, FUN... and next door to rodeo grounds, too.
