This is your classic upscale beach town gift shop. You will most certainly NOT see cheesy magnets or novelty t-shirts. This is a shop for people that own beach houses or have relatives that do. Or who have fully embraced the nautical or "beach" aesthetic in their homes. I do tease. This stores carries a well-curated array of gifts. These include such things as hand-made pottery, jewelry, candles, cards and an array of objet d'arts. There is dominant color palate of blues, greens and driftwood. It is a very nice shop and one that you could easily spend quite a while picking out a tasteful gift for a loved one. The Steamer Trunk has a lovely inventory. And it of course carries merchandise emblazoned with "Catalina Island." It's just that it's the same inventory I've seen when I've visited my mother near Rehobeth Beach. Or the Waterfront in Baltimore where my sister lives. It would have been nice to have seen some more local artists/artisans represented. As you might expect, the gift shop wasn't on the cheap side, but, to be fair, for the quality of the goods for sale it was reasonable. Resort towns (and California and especially Catalina) are typically on the pricier side. This is an economy fed primarily through tourism. But, again, prices were not exorbitant. When I visited there several other shoppers in the store and the woman tending the register was answering question for them. I felt like I would have no problem getting helpful answers. So, while not unique, definitely a place to find some beautiful gifts. read more

I would absolutely recommend this store! I was on a cruise which stopped at Catalina Island for the day. I was looking for a birthday gift for my daughter, we stopped in The Steamer Trunk and I saw a beautiful bracelet.. I purchased the bracelet and when I got back from my cruise I gave it to my daughter, she wore it the next day and it fell off her arm, it was broken and missing a piece..I felt awful and began thinking how am I going to return it to a store on Catalina island. I sent an email to The Steamer Trunk explaining what happened and the next day received a return email from Erin. She apologized and asked if I would like a refund or replacement! I asked for a replacement and to my surprise a new bracelet arrived at my home the next day! Excellent customer service! I will always purchase from this store when I visit Catalina Island. read more

Catalina's premier gift shop! They sell small trinkets, higher-end souvenirs, home decorations, island-y items and stuff for kids and adults. Located on the front street (Crescent St) when you're coming front the boat, in between Pancake Cottage and Island Donuts. They sell magnets, Catalina tiles, ian assortment of clutches and purses (1 with an '80s design of colorful cassette tapes), sun hats, keychains, old-school Catalina postcards, jewelry, stuffed animals, cups, pillows and a Catalina-shaped cribbage board. There's so much stuff in this relatively small place... you've got to check it out. read more

This was probably my favorite shop in Avalon. Everything was so cute. Lots of cute earrings and trinkets. The lady that was working the counter. I'm not sure if she's the owner or not but she was very friendly. The items are a little bit on the pricier side, but this is a tourist destination. I fell in love with the skin care products. The hydrating body mist was my absolute favorite. It had a very light scent but it was so moisturizing and I suffer from dry skin. It also did not leave my skin oily or greasy. What a fun little shop along the main street in Avalon. They have a great variety of not only Catalina Island souvenirs but also lots of unique things at reasonable rates! I ended up purchasing a pair of earrings and we got our Catalina magnet from here. Wonderful customer service from the woman (don't remember her name!) while she helped me the earrings. It depends on what part of the store you're in. As I walk around I don't see much for me, but others are packed into those areas. Then I walk off to a nook along the back wall by the cash register where there's NO ONE and that's where I find all the stuff that interests me. I was on Catalina for 4 days last week and while I don't remember what I got here, I know I came in twice and bought something small and framable. To be fair, it was a hell of a trip. Such a great shop! Prices were more reasonable than you would expect for a shop right on the main street. The selection was awesome, a little (actually, a lot!) of everything to choose from. This is by far the best store to buy quality items on the island. Feels like walking into a store on the island of Capri. There were many interesting and some new type of jewelry that I had never seen. I never knew you could wear these beautifully cut out recycled rubber jewelry that are so thin that once on your skin, they look like Polynesian tattoos. I simply love the set I got. The staff are welcoming and helpful. Carrie helped me and very sweet. My friend and I were both very happy with this store and our purchases. It's definitely different from the stores that sell the cheap t-shirts and souvenirs. I'm planning on going back to Catalina with my husband soon. We went on a Catalina cruise, and stop by the store to pick up a couple a cute little pieces like a blessing jar and some cute magnetic tiles. They have so many nice items. Absolutely adorable! Quality goods at a reasonable price. I've bought a few things from here over the last few years -- namely things that are iconic Catalina in some way (but not kitchy). I adore the card selection. Popped in for a thank you card earlier this week, and ended up buying a birthday card for my grandmother (whose birthday is next month) and a card for a colleague who's moving on (next month). Just had to buy them right now since they were so fitting! Some gorgeous jewelry and "beachy" / seaside items. One of the best selections on Catalina Island with unique items! Lots of products around the themes of marine, beach, dogs, and artisan work. Unique shop with a little bit of everything. I got few gifts for my family and a pair of earrings. One of the gifts I got for my family is the painted tiles. Probably one of my favorite item from this shop. The tiles are well made and are just beautiful. They have different sizes and designs. The earrings are just as beautiful. They are silver with turquoise stones. Just lovely! The young lady at the counter was very helpful. She helped me picked the tiles while she was giving me more information on them. She was also very patient when I was deciding on the earrings. It's a little pricey, specially on the house decoration section. But something's are just worth it. I definitely recommend this shop, if you are looking for something different. read more

This cute little gift shop had a great store front that whispered to me and my d-i-l, "Come in and browse a bit"! We did! I picked up an adorable little print, aceo (greeting card sized) of the Pleasure Pier, vivid colors with a built in border. It now graces my beachy bathroom wall where I can see it from my throne on a daily basis! Love it! I was also happy I stopped here because the gal at the counter lives in Avalon and tells me what I've seen in this congested little village is a mere drop in a thimble of what Catalina Island holds for its residents. This was by far my favorite shop in Catalina! The woman at the counter was friendly and even remembered me when I came back a second time to buy some earrings I had my eye on. The shop was nicely put together with lots to look at. I wish this place was in San Diego as there were items I would love to buy for my house but did not want to have to take on the boat home with me. I love this fine gifts boutique! So many unique and gorgeous items to choose from! The owner and attendants at this store are such lovely people. She personally helped me find just the right necklace for my picky 12 year old. Turns out, she has a great eye for what pre-teens like. He got this amazing leather necklace with silver pendant made in Spain. He loves it and hasn't taken it off! I also got a number of well-priced smaller keepsakes for my friends and family. They say that Catalina island is called birthday island, and this store was on the list for 'birthday deals.' However, we were treated as if they didn't care if we bought something or not!! I went to Catalina for my birthday (It's a free boat ride plus other freebies). I went into this shop becase there were some art tiles that caught my eye in the window. Anyway , I ended up buying a couple of things for my baby granddaughter. To say the least, the girl at the register, "Carrie" is the name on the receipt, was less than friendly! All day, I was greeted by strangers with "Happy Birthday!" (You get a birthday ribbon to wear). I did not even get a simple "hello", nor 'thank-you' at the end of the transaction. This shop has a lot of nice things in it,but 'Carrie' is not one of them!! We will be going back next month for my husband's birthday, however , we will not be visiting The Steamer Trunk. read more

What a find, The Steamer Trunk has gifts galore, something for everyone young and old. Fabulous welcoming service. The store is not crammed with "stuff" rather everything is displayed with space to walk around. Father's Day gifts were useful, tasteful, different, fun and not expensive. I purchased a crossover strap travel purse, I had been looking for something similar for over a year, it is made by "baggallini" fabulous quality, and just the right size, style and price. There was a large display of purses to choose from. I wish I had use for the painted tiles, simply beautiful. This will be a go to place the next time I visit Avalon. read more
