After going to the same barber for 48 years, I found that it looks like he has folded up, with the pandemic most likely as the cause. I hadn't been in there for 5 months myself due mostly to Covid concerns. I was saddened by the closure, but I looked like Doc from Back to the Future, so it's time to move on. Today was my second time visiting The Striped Pole. Kelly the manager(?) made it super east to make an appointment and went out of her way to get me in and done quickly. Both times I did the haircut and shave. Once with a straight razor. This time with the buzzers. Tiffany did a great job today, and was super easy to talk to. The last time I had a straight razor shave and a hair cut it was from a guy there. I can't remember his name but he also did a great job. Finding a good barber is hard to find. Finding ones that does straight razor shaves is even harder. I will definitely be going back, and would definitely recommend them. read more

HAIR, HAir, hair..... We all have it, well most of us do..... And some more than others. If you're giving a review for a barber shop, most likely you have some hair that needs to be cut. Ok, you know all of that already, but here's what you should know about the Striped Pole. Of course when you give a review for a barber shop, you are writing about the barber and not the shop. I don't have anything bad to say about the shop itself. It's small, but clean. My barber was Paul. He's a nice guy who said he's been cutting hair for the last 40 years. That's great, as long as you know how to cut. Paul is one of those guys that happens to have more hair than others, but I'm not really talking about the top of his head. Paul's arms are really hairy. So why am I telling you this and why is it relevant? As Paul was washing my hair in the sink, his hairy arms, or should I say the hair on his arms was rubbing both sides of my face. I became extremely grossed out by it, but held it together the best I could. For someone that has been cutting hair for 40 years, you would think he would know not to rub his hairy arms all over my face. I explained to Paul how I normally get my haircut, but he suggested he had a different way to try. Since I'm going to a new place and trying a new barber I thought I would be open to seeing something new. He seemed to understand what I told him. He said if I didn't like it his way we would do it the way I requested. So, guess what... I didn't like what he tried so we went back to my original request and did it the way I wanted. To be clear, all I asked for was a fade on my sides starting with a #1 at the bottom going up to a #3 towards the top. He started cutting my hair with scissors and comb. It felt like it was taking forever, but he finally stopped and handed me the mirror. I asked if he was done...and if my hair was a #1 fade. He said he didn't know what a #1 was. He's a barber for 40 years and he doesn't know what the electric trimmer numbers are. The other barber who is a female, apparently the owner of the shop, had a pile of the trimmers by her. I pointed over to her and the trimmers.... After cutting my hair he told me he doesn't know what those are or how to use them. He said he was trained before those trimmers. I really don't care if you were trained 40 years ago... If you are a barber it is your profession and best interests to learn new methods over the years. Seems really lazy to me. If you're a barber, be the best barber you can be. I am not a barber, but I have trimmers at home for touch ups. I can't do my entire head which is why I rely on professional barbers. It's just not going to be Paul. Sorry. Paul, suggestion for you. If you want to be a barber, be in it 100%. You don't seem like you are. Stay on top of trends and new methods. Yeah, someone invented the car years ago, but they didn't give up. They continued to improve and the car got better. I've been a steady customer for almost 2 years now (beginning early 2017) and I won't go anywhere else. The shop itself has a small and cozy vibe to it. The barbers know what they're doing and they're always busy! Opening now on Sundays are a huge benefit to all customers as the barbers' schedules are consistently filled during the week. Finding a new barber can be tricky, but I promise the striped pole will take care of you (otherwise I wouldn't be a regular customer). Very easy to schedule (and reschedule) an appointment online. Would recommend to anyone new in the area, or looking for a new barber/wanting to switch things up! NEW Ownership Kelly contacted me. I will be return and she is working out the Kinks. I will be updating my 3 star to a 5. Not fair to her to have a 3 star from previous ownership. I never finished my review on this place great Barbers that work long hours on their feet. I started off with Paul getting my hair cut. He is a old school barber. He is the real thing. I would follow him to any location he was at until he got busy and our times didn't sync. He introduced me to Beatrise which means I was back to The Stripped Pole. Every other week on Saturday 9am. Amazing!!!!! Organized no drama great conversation with everyone in the shop with other barbers(kelly) and clients.......Walked in this morning NO Beatrise.... I was told that a email was sent out and that they just cancel my appointment but also they forgot to call. Very upsetting not get a hair cut that's been scheduled for 2 weeks on Father's day weekend. All I was told was "we are booked".... on that note I had received a TEXT reminder on Friday that my appointment was for Saturday 16 @9am. For sure I thought I found a place to get a haircut but I guess I'm not Stripped pole customer I was a customer of who cuts my hair. After 2 barbers time to move on. Kelly did an amazing job with my hair and cut it precisely how I asked her to do it. My wife has always been hesitant/skeptical of my haircuts for the past few years and when she saw me after my haircut with Kelly, she was smitten. As I mentioned, Kelly did exactly what I asked her and didn't hesitate to ask me questions before changing anything. I also had a baby shower to attend and she did a great job styling my hair. In the past, I would always have to restyle my hair after getting it cut because it wasn't how I wanted it. This place seemed to pop up on my radar only recently but they have been in this location for over 20 years and they are fantastic. I will never go anywhere again! The appointments can be made by phone or through Yelp, because walk-ins don't really appear to work. However, with that said, I have made appointments just an hour before I want a cut and they've worked. The prices are very reasonable and all the barbers (mostly women) have had long careers in the hair business, so they really know their stuff. They do not have a big turnover of talent so when you pick up a favorite barber, you can pretty much be assured that they will stay. Highly recommended! read more

I walked in without a reservation on a Saturday and did not have to wait in line to get a haircut. The employees are courteous and personable. I had my hair cut by Sofia and she did a pretty good job. One interesting perk is that they keep a log about the date and the style of the haircut along with the name of patron so that repeating customers do not need to re-explain how they would like to wear their hair every time they visit. This is definitely a nice touch in terms of customer relationship management. The important thing is I got a good haircut quickly in a clean store, with better pricing compared to the other barber shops in the area from whom I have experienced inferior service. I've been going here for my haircuts for about a year, and enjoy it every time. I get a great cut reliably, and while I'm there it feels like a different world. Time slows down, and it's relaxing. If I were to classify good barbershops and experiences into two categories- ones where conversations make you laugh At the people in the shop and ones where you laugh With the people, this is definitely one where you laugh With the people. Having moved to Schaumburg in 2011, I was in need of a new hair stylist/ barber. I had tried several local shops without much success. I checked online and found a place near my apartment by the name of "Best Head", (which I got a kick out of). I gave it a shot and met Marty for the first time. He did a great cut and I was pleased so I decided that I would try it again. On my second visit, Marty was occupied and handed me over to Sofia. She took her work very seriously and really had an amazing attention to detail. I can honestly say that when she finished I was sporting best cut I had ever had! I have continued to trust Marty and Sofia with my grooming needs since then and recommend everyone I meet to them. I even had them cut/ clean up everyone in my wedding party before my big day. I have since moved to Naperville and briefly tried to replace/ replicate the quality and value of the Striped Pole... unsuccessfully. Had my 6 year old sons hair cut by Marty. He did a wonderful job! I love it. My son looks very handsome. It cost $18 and worth every cent. I have had trouble finding a place that would cut it even or the way I wanted it. I like the short clean side ms and longer front. When I say longer - it's still short just longer than the sides. The cut was clean, even and perfect. The shop is clean and friendly. Looks to be family owned. The atmosphere was great. I will definitely be brining him back here from now on. read more

Got a haircut from Sofia who was really pleasant, but for the price of the haircut my expectations were not met at all. I made an appointment and came on-time. She was in the middle of coloring someones hair, so she juggled me and another customer. The whole haircut was very rushed. The haircut itself is average, equivalent of Hair Cuttery perhaps, not $24 for sure. There is no posted prices, I was quoted $24, then $22, then $24 again. The water was cold during shampoo,washed hands with cold water as well, probably bad water heater. Sofia and Marty seem to know all customers by name which is nice. But for $24 + tip, I will be taking my business elsewhere. I expect not to be juggled and rushed for that amount of money. read more

Wow, never had a haircut like this before but I thought I'd give it a shot. I probably hadn't had a cut in 6+ months. Started by talking about my needs in hair styles and cuts (receding, grey at young age...genetics), and we decided that a clean part with straight razor and short sides, long top would look best. As a mixed-race, big face, head is egg-shaped, guy I've got hair problems all the time. Black shops, white shops, it doesn't matter. It's hard to really explain the cut I want, AND what will actually look good with my head and hair texture. #MutProbz But, with positive reviews on Yelp, I checked this place out for the first time today, as it's down the street from work, and it's almost impossible to get a cut when I get closer to home near Naperville. I love a shop in Aurora and Naperville, BUT, with two small kids and busy weekends, I need to find a place I can go during a lunchbreak. I think I just found it. Marty cut me today. Pretty legit, this Marty is. Lots of experience, quick yet quality, friendly, and honestly, he was not intimidated at all by my texture. Hats off. However, I think I'll go with Sofia next time based off her clients stylistically. Nothing wrong with Marty at all, just she seems like she'll "get me" and what I'm looking for.
