While visiting New Haven/Yale for a few days, we decided to stay here instead of the hotel we stayed at last year. The hotel is conveniently located a block or so from campus off Chapel St and is centrally located, very walker friendly. Check-in is at 3pm but we actually arrived into town a few hours early due to snow where we were at. I believe you have to do valet when you stay here, so we just pulled up to the designated area on the curb. Check-in process was straightforward, our room was ready, provided all the particulars and we were on our way. They do give you info on the morning coffee, amenities, etc. Room was pretty nice and boutique-y, nice snow capped campus view, our bed was a Queen but it was pretty big. Shower was nice, sink area was good, nicer towels and great body wash/shampoo. Wish the electric plugs were positioned differently, wifi was strong, overall the room was fine, nice design and furniture. We didn't have any issues with noise or ac/heat. No small fridge. Coffee is complimentary downstairs in the morning, there is a little market you can buy stuff too. If not, a few doors down, there's a great little coffee cafe. Hotel has a restaurant but we didn't try it. There's a small gym on the 2nd floor(looks like an hotel room they converted into a gym), complimentary bottled water if you need to grab a few for your room. Location is great, we walked everywhere, campus is only a few mins away, plenty of restaurants around, easy to get back onto the highway when we headed back to the airport. Staff at check-in was nice, informative and helpful. Check-out, not much discussion with the front desk guy, he just said we were good to go and emailed me the receipt when we turned in the keys. 5 mins before you head to check-out, call the valet and they will pull your car around and have it ready on the curb for you with friendly departures. read more

The Study at Yale is a cleverly themed hotel on the edge of campus surrounded by cafés, book stores, and museums. There are shelves of books in the lobby and one of the upgraded rooms offers a specially curated book collection. Promotional items include book marks and graph paper. There was ample street parking on but we opted for the valet parking, under the building, for $32 plus tip. The desk clerks and valets were prompt, polite, and went out of their way to be helpful. We checked out early and left our luggage with the desk clerks while we visited The Peabody Museum and had lunch. We enjoyed the walk to The Peabody Museum, which was a little less than a mile, and included passing the Yale Museum of Art, crossing the green, and the New Haven Museum. The room was clean, and I believe we had a "city view" room which was comprised of the top of one building, a parking garage, and some other buildings. Not great, but definitely a city view. We didn't have a chance to try the hotel restaurant or bar. In the morning they offer coffee and tea in the lobby but we didn't have a chance to try it either. We enjoyed our stay at this hotel and would stay there again. read more

Like other reviewers, I have had a positive experience at this hotel before, but not this time. This time, I tried to book a one-night stay, but after filling out the online booking form (including my cc number), a message popped up that the transaction did not go through because "This room is no longer available." I didn't think much of it until later, when the hotel charged me a no-show fee of $700 for the night I had tried unsuccessfully to book. I communicated with the hotel by phone and email. It ended up being the same person both times, and she refused to listen or even look into it. I understand that glitches happen, but now that the hotel has my money they don't care. This is very disappointing and I feel totally ripped off. Beware and stay elsewhere! read more

There are some great things about this hotel, and then less-than-great. The good: - great location if you're visiting Yale - nice design, inside and out - comfortable lobby where you can hang out - beautiful views from wide windows, especially toward the quad - felt well cleaned The bad: - rooms are not quite big enough for all the furniture. If you're at the lounge chair, you're hitting the lamp. If you're getting up from the bed, you're hitting the footstool. - bathrooms are awkward. You must be in the shower to turn it on. In my room you could not access the toilet without closing the door entirely. Toilet flushes so loud it can be heard from next room - the "gym" is a small room with the bare minimum of items. Acceptable for someone who thinks 1990s treadmills are good enough. - why no coffee in the room but just gas-station coffee in the lobby? why no small fridges in the room? The ugly: - I've been in the streetside and the courtyard rooms. Both are loud, too loud for a small town. The windows are single pane and on the street side, expect revving engines, loud laughers and talkers, and music from cars to be an essential part of your hotel experience. But in the back, the rooms overlook air conditioning/cooking vents which have a steady, loud drone that is audible ALL THE TIME. Drove me nuts. To be fair, I don't see anyone else complaining about these, so if you're someone who doesn't care about droning fans, don't worry. If you are, find a different place (but not the neighboring hotel which also overlooks the vents/fans). read more

I was there for two weeks and got to know everyone pretty well. I must say that I was treated exceptionally by everyone who works there. Everyone went out on a limb for me. I want to name the people that I got to know during my stay. Kudos to: Alex, Jaylin, Jozlin, Mary, Katie, Tyler, Sofia, Quan, Varina, Zack, Jared, Steve, and Chris. I hope I didn't forget anyone! What a great place, and what a wonderful staff. I ate at the restaurant twice, sometimes three times a day. The staff was wonderful. The service was great and the food was delicious! People were kind, friendly, courteous, and personable. I grew up in New Haven and will return again in the near future, and my plan is to book The Study at Yale again. Came to New Haven to visit a friend and the reviews steered me to two choices. Either the Study at Yale or the Blake Hotel. I was drawn to the Study by the pictures so I went with it. I booked a king room with a campus view. Not sure what type of campus I was looking at but it was the view of a random roof. I was not impressed with the view whatsoever. The room was clean and it was a decent size. It had a leather chair with a foot rest in there too. The bed was very comfortable too. The bathroom was a little small but it did the job for our 2 night stay. FYI, they charge $20 for parking overnight. Sunday is free parking on the street so you can save some money if you park after 9pm on Saturday into Sunday. There was plenty of parking on the street. The one good thing about the hotel parking is the elevator goes straight up to your room. I would come back and stay but next time I will make sure I have a better view. Came for a private dinner in the Penthouse. Started with a mojito first at the bar downstairs. it was nice but paper straws stink and don't work well. Dinner itself was okay. First course- butternut squash soup allegedly served with micro greens but all I could taste was cilantro which makes my stomach turn. Bread was sliced and served with warm butter. Our server actually came around with the bread basket and doled out slices individually. Next course was the branzino which was freaking DELICIOUS. Ended the meal with a chocolate pot de creme that was served with ice cream. Didn't understand that pairing at all. I'd come back for the view and the branzino. Nice space for a private dinner with friends and colleagues. All the servers were nice. Valet parking only but its' free! read more

This place is top notch and Kerry who coordinates the events is such a professional, she made everything completely seamless from start to finish. The meeting room continental breakfast, the on-site lunch at Heirloom and the afternoon break (you must order the cookies!) were all fantastic. The look is lovely, but that's it The Restaurant staff took an extremely long time to come over and acknowledge our table, then the took longer to come back to ask what we wanted to order then it took 1/2 hour to bring the food which was lunch. 3 other tables eating and drinking ours nothings the servers were very concerned with one table whom they keep going back and fourth to serve them over and over, water, assistance period servers still never came over to ask if we wanted anything to drink or we apologize for the wait nothing a whole half an hour. while everyone I mean everyone was eating and drinking. Then we noticed they brought more food for the table next to us again, which the table waved away. As if they did not order or no longer wanted. Very Disappointed my colleagues stayed I had to leave. Steps leading into the the hotel - really?!?!?!? And then doors that don't automatically open. Ummm, did the architects realize that people would be arriving with luggage? This is a new building, not a renovation. The ironies of bad design, considering that this building is next to the architecture school go on - when you enter, the light switches are not on the left wall as would be expected based on the way the door opens; the bathroom door opens at an angle at which you can't reach the toilet; you can't turn on the shower water without being in the shower; the bedside stands have no outlets for electricity or usb ports, yet these tables have phones (who makes calls with landlines anymore?); no refrigerator - have to order ice from the front desk in little pails; no coffee maker; no glasses (just 2 plastic cups); small pillows; no breakfast. Oh, did I mention that this cost $236 on a Tuesday, not including parking? read more

Boutique hotel located on the Yale campus. I was fortunate to have the tab picked up by Yale. Valet parking is $35. (Also comped by Yale for me). Nit sure where you park otherwise. Rooms were small, but they felt homey. It must have been the decor, but I felt more like I was in my own house as opposed to the sterile hotel room vibe I normally get. Nice large walk in glass door shower. With seersucker bathrobes. No refrigerator or microwave or coffee pot. I should really minus 2 stars for that alone. WiFi was terrific. read more

My husband, daughter and I stayed at The Study last night... here are my thoughts: Room: Clean but small with a tiny little bathroom. The decor is nothing special...bland at best. Walls are very thin and we were woken up by other guests as they conversed outside our room at 1 am. Service: Check in and check out was seamless. Everyone we encountered was friendly. Location: Excellent. Minutes away from everything. Overall: I don't really understand all the fabulous reviews for this hotel. I mean, it's fine but nothing to rave about. I have interacted with The Study in several different ways. Most recently, I stayed with them over the weekend while we celebrated a special occasion. I was very impressed with how they are handling COVID. I think I can be extremely conservative about health and safety measures right now, and I was completely impressed with how they are handling things. First, your room is unoccupied for 48 hours prior to your arrival. This made all the difference for us in making a decision about where to stay. Second, housekeeping does not come into your room each morning to clean-- you need to specifically request housekeeping. That means that if you are staying for multiple nights, you don't have to worry about anyone entering your room and breathing on your pillow or toothbrush. There is hand sanitizer everywhere. They have eliminated valet parking, but they still have a parking attendant on duty who can help you unload your vehicle (if you're comfortable) and will help you get safely into the garage and into a parking spot. We stayed for three nights and I never ran into another person in the elevator. I booked our room over the phone and the support was top notch. They helped me get the best possible rate for the room we were looking for, and tolerated several follow-up calls from me while we were ironing out the details. :-) Every hotel staff member I have interacted with in the many times I have been in the building has been friendly, helpful, and accommodating. (Heirloom restaurant is occasionally a different story on that front, but I won't get into that here). I loved our room. We stayed in a Study Suite, and worked remotely on Friday before diving into the weekend. It was a great setup. The campus view is gorgeous. The decorations and furniture in the room were what I would call "Low-maintenance Professor Chic." Simple, beautiful design, clean lines, great linens, a bed you want to spend all day in. Bigelow products in the bathroom were lovely. I have also been to the hotel as a user of their event spaces. My former employer hosted client onboarding sessions at The Study every few weeks, and I was a trainer. Standing in a windowless room for 8 hours a day can be a drag, but not at The Study-- I always looked forward to those weeks. The spaces are solid, and the staff were always just amazingly attentive. We could always rely on their help. When things went awry (as they are wont to do in a technology training session) the support was prompt, thorough, and friendly. And the food. Oh my god, the food!!! Where do I begin. The breakfast in the morning is sublime-- best bacon in New Haven. The snack spreads are life changing. I still have dreams about their barbecue flavored popcorn. I have suffered many a macaroni and cheese coma at the hands of the Heirloom chef. How do I say enough great things about this place? Lobby and study area in the 1st floor is all I visited here: Very nice atmosphere and location. When I got there it was very late at night, there was no one there, and the place was closing in 45 minutes, plus private event going on next door. I can't say much about the food/ drinks, extremely basic snack bar, just bought a to-go tea. Had a lovely time with a good friend there. The place is soooo chique! I had a great experience here last September. However, this June was different. I had booked for two nites through a third party (I thought it was the hotel site.) The nite before my reservation my friends had to quarantine for COVID, negating the reason for my stay. I have been trying to get a full refund, without confirmed success to date. Hotel has said they will honor full refund, but it doesn't happen. I want to like and recommend this hotel, but I'm not sure if they will honor my cancellation request. So this is a tentative review pending the resolution of this issue. read more

I stayed at the study for my birthday and it was everything I had hoped. We stayed in a study room which has a good-size reading alcove with two chairs, a desk, and full bookcase. It was nice to sit in that room and have a space away from the bedroom. The bedroom itself was quite large and had desk space and / or built-ins across the windows so you can easily spread your stuff out. The bathroom was small however very clean and modern. The bed is low-is as most modern rooms are now and it was really comfortable. I wish I could find another excuse to come back here. p.s.: the people watching here can not be beat. I just love to watch people with money that aren't afraid to insinuate how much money they have. but fear not - plenty of regular peeps as well and a couple of families went through the big gorgeous lobby. As everyone knows - the hotel options in NHV are limited so, if you have to spend your money somewhere, I suggest you spend it here. read more

3.5 stars, really. Not a bad addition to New Haven. The rooms are clean and modern, with a decent amount of space. The bathrooms are stocked, but TINY (that's to be expected in a "boutique" hotel). Service was decent--although a little stuck up. Although it's a new hotel--I think they are a bit too overpriced. Rooms and layout are definitely better than the Omni(which is showing it's age), location rocks-right next to the art museum...but still, not the best boutique hotel I've stayed at (that would be any hotel in the Kimpton chain). At last there is a luxury boutique hotel in downtown New Haven! If only it could have opened while I was still a student, so my parents could stay in it. Still, it is better late than never. The service is cheerful. The rooms are bright, spare, and beautiful. The leather furnishings, internet, and bookish decor are all great. There is simply no nicer place to stay in New Haven, and you may well be able to get a room here cheaper than at the Omni, to boot. I haven't been to the hotel restaurant (which has a separate Yelp! entry), and I gather it is decent but overpriced; but there's lots of good stuff nearby, so don't worry about it. read more

I spend two nights at The Study at Yale. The guestrooms are comfortable with a contemporary decor. The onsite restaurant, Heirloom offers a tasty seasonal menu. The fitness center is small but adequate for a basic carido workout (if needed, they have free passes to a large off-site gym). And its location in the heart of downtown New Haven makes it ideal for touring the city and Yale. TIPS: 1) If you are easily bothered by street noise, request a room in the back of the hotel or one that is on the 4th floor or above if in the front. 2) When checking in, ask about the availability of free tickets to Yale events. The wall of windows, Danish style open book shelves divides space w contemporary style yet comfortable & inviting lounge area. Natural elements & color scheme transition nicely into each area. @ reception complimentary petite pastries & veggie frittata, Illy Coffee, variety of reading material. Professional yet congenial staff. An artist's Photography display on view. The restrooms are cool- bamboo, granite, porcelain, bundles of fresh cotton hand towels in reed baskets, great hardware. Ambient back ground music. Fresh scents of herbs & citrus. The conference/event room was efficient, clean, good acoustics. read more

From the moment we walked in we were greeted warmly. Darius was helpful, kind and knowledgeable. I can tell a place is top notch by the first face I see. Thank you Darius ( hope I'm spelling it correctly) for making a great first impression and helping with a hard day. Our room was spectacular with views looking over Yale University. The best part was the facilities, our on suite had a beautiful soaking tub. We didn't get to eat breakfast at the restaurant but it look lovely. The hotel has been around since October 2008 and is in the same spot as the old Colony Hotel, directly across the street from the Yale School of Art. When pulling up on Chapel Street, it was unclear where to park. I pulled in front of the hotel and stepped out of the car to head inside to inquire where the lot was when an employee said he'd take the keys and park the car for me. Valet parking was $22/day with in/out privileges. It took them about 5-7 minutes to get the car, so be sure to call a few minutes before you actually need it. The initial room I got was on the second floor. I requested one on a higher floor (it's a seven-story hotel) and was told that the only other available room they had was on the third floor. The room looked exactly as it did on the website - and just as clean. Very modern amenities and there seemed to be pretty good sound insulation between rooms. The workout room on the second floor was small, but had new and clean equipment. Definitely my new first choice for accommodations in New Haven given how the very tired and dark Omni Hotel. Room rate for king bed was $199/night. read more

This is one of the nicest boutique hotel I've visited. Rooms were clean, bedding were soft and comfortable. Picked up a lot of design details from the decor alone, it really made you appreciate the effort that went into this place from lobby to guest rooms.
