I have never tried the Surf Shack after they took over from Dairy Queen. So I finally gave it a try and I'm glad I did. This restaurant is so clean and welcoming that I would recommend dining in. The service is great. Prices are great. The portions are just right. I like this place. They definitely should be busier than they were. But i will definitely go back. read more

Well I was looking forward to a great burger. The service was good. The food on the other hand tasted good but not something to write home about. They have great potato fries! The fry sauce was very good as well. The burger unfortunately was below average. The meat was dry and overcooked. The tomatoes were thin and uneventful. I didn't want to take pictures, I'm going to go back one more time because I have heard good things from other people. Really wanted this to be good. The decor was nice. Surf motifs. They also serve beer which makes me want to try them again. Seems to me they just need to be more consistent with their food prep and not overcook or rush their orders. I was driving around when I found myself in need of a burger. I've driven by this place many a time and saw they had good reviews. I walked in and there was no wait (there were also no other customers). I went with the classic double with cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles and grilled onions. Lemme get fries and a drink too. I was pleasantly surprised that the burger tasted more like In-N-Out than any burger I've ever had. The fries were just mediocre at best. I could have got the same thing at any dive bar or school cafeteria and I didn't bother finishing them. Instead I saved the room for another single with cheese to go. However, the second burger didn't taste anything like the first. I was just another burger. I'll probably try them again hoping for another In-N-Out tasting burger. We'll see. read more

This is my sons new favorite place. The onion rings are amazing! I also like their Philly sandwich. The only thing I can say is they close early & can run out of onion rings. I wish they kept later hours but it seems most places are struggling with staffing so we r likely fortunate they have ok hours. What it has going for it: - decent location (Old Dairy Queen on Appleway) - pricing is lower than similar establishments What it has going against it: - customer areas could be updated - more beverage choices - fast food quality food So I believe these guys use to be a food truck who made the jump to a brick & mortar store. Seems like they did the minimum on the decor to keep costs down and it shows. Pricing is very good for what your getting (posted pics of menu). I have been reviewing downtown and midtown spots for the past 3 months and finally got to Surf Shack, which I'm calling North Mid Town. ( I know that's a stretch). Surf Shack is very good and the most like InNOut with some better French fry choices. It's now my top choice, but the places listed under number one are a more expensive $10-$15 burger/ different class and you pay a lot for it. I rank them better than the legendary Hudsons. Here's my overall Burger rankings so far/ and I apologize for the close ranking because this is a burger town!!! 1. Collective Kitchen $$$ Pricey Barely ahead of Capone's, Crafted, Sweet Lou's, Seasons and Moontime and even the burgers at Pilgrams are great! 2. Surf Shack $ cheap I would say "The Shack" as I call it, is the best value, flavor and price. 3.Hudsons $ for value, just ahead of Rogers. $$ Rogers quality seems better to me than Hudsons but they are priced in between the cheap $ burger joints and the pricey $$$ gourmet burgers. Worst mention is Smitty's however you spell it. Don't get me wrong- they are ok but the reviews must be fake because they ain't all that for the price. So, my eldest son has been telling me about this little burger place sincee last year and we both agreed that we needed to go there one day for lunch. However, often times it has not been open, winter time of course in Idaho can be rough on small businesses to say the least. So everytime I/ we go by it we are always checking to see if it is open,.... and yesterday we had the time and it was OPEN!!! Met the owner, ordered two of the Double Delicious burgers with fries and a water. It did not fail to impress!! The burgers were not huge, but they were big, fresh, hot and juicy...and oh so delicious. The lettuce, tomatos and pickles were fresh, clean, crisp and delicious. The fries were clean, piping hot and cooked to perfection. What a neat little gem.
