Burgers: Fresh. Juicy. Delicious. Fried Pickles: They have them super-thin, almost like they shaved them off the pickle instead of just cutting them up. Addictive. The Mrs. and I got one order, and we should have gotten two. Maybe more. Shakes: Real huckleberries in their huckleberry shake. In fact, the only real complaint I have is that I needed a spoon instead of a straw because the berries kept clogging the straw. Came from out of town and I always try to get my fix of a non-menu/secret menu item, the Hammy Whammy. The item was previously sold at Topper Too, which I believe had the same owners before it closed. The young men working the counter had heard of it but had only made it once over the past year. After a quick conference with the manager and the cook, they were able to make it for me. Just as good as I remember. I really liked that they went out of their way to make this for me as they had the supplies. Many places would have just said "sorry" and moved on. If you ever want to visit a restaurant that embodies the opposite of every good business advice you've ever heard, visit Paul Bonyun Burgers in Hayden Idaho. My Visit The building is run-down with mismatched furniture. The pictures on the wall could be interesting if they told a story or had a coherency about them, but they just look plopped on, symmetrically covering spaces at even widths along the wall above the windows. Boring. The signage is at least consistent, but not descriptive. White boards with black fonts (of slightly different sizes) cover the boards. I'll give them a few points for not being awful signs. But, I have no idea what a "Paul Bunyan" is as opposed to a "Double Whammy". I finally saw an letter sized paper on the counter at the register, explaining things, but that doesn't help me from back in line. The guy yells, "Dub" (double, I assume?) half-behind him as I order. That's a bit distracting. I've seen this done in dinners, but somehow here it feels more disrespectful to my ears than it does a quaint part of the experience in this instance. I ordered a combo, but I don't get my drink yet, I guess I'll go sit down? As I look around, the condiments are placed (rather after-the-fact) on a rickety table with a sad table cloth. Nothing is labeled, but I can assume the ketchup is the one with red dripping out? My number is called, couldn't remember what it was, had to look. The new trend is to ask for a name. I walked up and my try is covered in spilled soda, including my fry/burger wrapper. Not much of a reaction from the counter-worker until I grabbed them and walked away without the tray. Then he said, "Oh sorry, did you want a new tray?"... It's OK buddy, I'm now guessing if the other trays are clean. The food This Double Burger is small for the price (the sign above said bigger beefier, I thought "than what?"). It was dressed with cheap American cheese (like the kind you unwrap from plastic sheets). The ketchup and mustard were squirted on unevenly to one side. It was small, did I mention that? When I went to get a refill, the counter guy filled it up without question. However, while he did I read a small sign that said "$0.50 for same visit refills". I'm thinking to myself, is this 2017? Really, you put that up and you're still in business? Free refills are standard, and cost you next to nothing in food costs. And the drink cups are those sad little Styrofoam cups (which speak, cheap). While I sat, they did a job interview in the far corner. Standard pathetic questions Corporate America stopped asking ten years ago. The candidate was barely out of the door before the interviewer said something that sounded like it could be disparaging about the candidate, and laughed. Then, the crew sat around the front counter and loudly complained about a drive through customers they had recently. The total of a hundred things (explicit and implicit) send a single resounding message: "We care more about saving a penny than making raving fans, which means we're out of business and just don't know it yet." All that said... Would I go back? Since they are the only real fast-food within a short walk of my work, sure. I might, they'll do in a pinch, but if I had a car, I'd have gone elsewhere. For all that, the burger wasn't bad. If it was between McDonald's and this, I might go here. Maybe.... Disclosures: Note: My standards for service are high. They should close. (2-3) Mostly bad, but they could recover, probably won't. (4-6) Varying degrees of "OK". I'd go again, if need be. Made a day trip to Montana. Promised my boys if they were good they'd get a shake upon our return. To my surprise they were so we headed to Paul Bunyan's. Tried northwest location first. 4 cars in line was goI'm got take forever. Ran up to Hayden. We got 4 of the worst shakes ever. They weren't even shakes. They were the consistency of a glass of milk. My huckleberry shake had maybe a teaspoons worth. The other three just as bad if not worse. One had a chocolate peanut butter. Imagine how that tasted. The cafe is old world style. Like that my family would frequent while I was growing up. Yes it could be updated but it fit itself as an old hot rod eatery. Real good homemade burgers and a small fry of giant proportions. For less than McDonalds. We all ordered shakes. Tho I wasnt pleased with mine it wasnt due to the manner or quality of the handmade shake...just wasnt what I was expecting. I hate going there because they are super slow and all the tables, floors, etc are always dirty. Last time we went every table was dirty. Food is just ok. My wife and I were looking forward to giving Paul Bunyan a try, particularly after seeing the first review. The shake was good and the service was great. According to my wife, the grilled cheese was just OK. The greatest need for improvement, though, is in the presentation of the place itself. It needs some cleaning and some attention to the outside. If you're looking for a shake, especially something non-standard, they have a wide range of options. For now, though, I'd recommend just picking it up at the drive-through window. read more

I have been here many times and the food is consistently pretty good. Went there Friday night and it was the worse. First off it took a long time to just be acknowledged at being at the counter. We ordered the same thing we normally do. I had the double whammy. When it came the wrapping paper was cold to the touch. When I unwrapped it the bun was cold and there was no bun on the bottom to speak up. the lettuce and pickle were very cold and what little bun there was was soaked with moisture. It was bad enough that I couldn't even pick it up to eat it. I asked them to remake it, and the results were the same. What little bottom bun was saturated with liquid and the wrapper and bun were cold and dripping wet. Bad enough not to eat and definitely not worth trying a third one. My husband and I went through the drive through and when we got home realized they gave us a side of fries instead of the side of munchers we ordered and we paid more for. When I called I was told I would have to come all the way back with the receipt if I wanted anything done about it. She was very rude about the situation, didn't apologize or anything, and said there was nothing they could do over the phone. BUYER BEWARE! BUYER BEWARE! BUYER BEWARE!!! Okay family, friends and whatever you are ...I am climbing up on my soapbox. Conner and I decided to have a burger. Besides Zips (I like) and Paul Bunyan (he likes) we ended up going to Paul Bunyan in Hayden. So, they have a $4.99 combo. It is the same thing as anywhere else. The sign stated "substitutions may cost more." Conner decided he wanted one of the combos. I had a hamburger and then added a slice of cheese. First off, I think the cheese must have come with a gold trim. The cheese itself was an extra $0.35, another which I figured was high but worth it. Then we sat down to wait for our food. I decided to read the receipt since it seemed high.This is where it gets interesting. Even though the wording for switching gems in for fries, says it may increase the cost it changes the total cost to $5.37. So now the great combo deal is not such a deal after all. It is now and always has been $0.37 more than advertised. I know it is not a big deal; however, if they serve 100 combos in one day ... that is a difference of $37.00 a week that they are lining their pockets with. I then brought the difference to the attention of the cashier so she could explain why. They told me their cash register was never wrong. They ring everything up separate since it is not considered "a combo" because you switched something instead of keeping the "combo" as it is advertised. I then spoke to the manager who said that is just the way they do it. She also explained how she does not make the prices and I would need to speak to the owner. She then got the manager on the phone who said the exact same thing. He said it no longer constituted as a "combo" since it was not the same as the sign was written, He informed me that a burger, gems and a drink is not a combo, even though the sign said there may be an extra charge for the substitution. So because we ordered gems (which is only a difference of $0.20 between fires and gems) we were charged $0.37. Conner said to stop fighting over the $0.37 and just leave.Jack, I know you are thinking the exact same thing as Conner but once again ... it is the principle! I told him he should have that in writing so that everyone understood that they were being stolen from when they think are getting a "special deal." I told him I would be sure to let everyone know the were ripping people off and he said ... go ahead! So here it is. If you agree with me regarding the point ... please share on your page to inform every person that is eating there.
