Usually there is a lovely and polite young lady who answers the phone and works behind the reception in all the years that I have gone to Surin, which is a small Thai massage salon and not a Spa. It's located in a sketchy little strip mall across from the mini Target on ER BLVD. I have been to Surin before and recommended it to a few people for its no frills, affordable, relatively good massage salon as it mostly depends on the masseuse that you get. It does not offer a sauna or steam showers, hence it's not a spa. On the evening that I went, which was the last appointment of the day at 7:30-9:30pm despite closing at 10pm, I encountered a mature woman with short hair who was working the reception. I have never seen her before - perhaps she is the owner or a manager. After coming in, she asked me to prepay, which has never happened to me before, but I obliged and paid in cash, which pleased her. I ended up having one of the better massages and was going to tip 20%+ or $25 to my masseuse in cash. I should have given it to the masseuse directly, but did not see her since I crossed back into the reception area after getting dressed. I handed the tip to the same mature woman in the reception area, who then gave me a dissatisfied and disapprovingly look. She asked if I enjoyed the massage or if I was unhappy with it. I replied, no, it was a good massage. Then she said, then why are you giving her just $25? I was taken back, quickly felt the horror of this woman talking to me in the most impolite way. I asked isn't 20% a good tip? I even pulled out my phone calculator to see if I had miscalculated in my head. She responded, well it seems like you were unhappy with your massage, we have a suggested tip right here and proceeded to point me to a card on the counter. Feeling the embarrassment of being shamed, and also in front of another masseuse who was in the room, I looked at it and asked, so you don't think $25 is a good enough tip and she said not unless I didn't like my massage. Each minute counts, she replied and continued, even waitresses get 25% tip, not 20%. I felt so embarrassed and guilted by this woman, that I pulled another $5 out to tip a total of $30. She said I could give it directly to my masseuse, which I wanted to do since I was afraid this woman would keep it for herself. I wondered afterward if they do not pay their masseuse a minimum wage? I felt horrified by that experience and called my sister soon after to share with her the shocking experience that I had. I couldn't get over it by the time I got home and even talked to my family about it. They said I should share my experience on Yelp. I still feel trauma from that experience to this day. If you happen upon this woman on your next visit, don't let her shame you like she did to me. Discreetly tip your masseuse directly! I went on to read some of the one star reviews and it seems like other customers experienced the wrath of this woman too. These experiences are truly horrifying. I started coming to Surin when I lived in Glassell Park and even though I have moved, I keep coming back cause of one reason: Jean! Jean has magical hands and is really sweet. I usually get a 2-hour combination massage cause I love Thai massage/getting stepped all over, but Surin's massage therapists are all well-versed in other types of massage if that's your jam. Jean doesn't say/talk much - which I greatly appreciate - and works rather intuitively, but she always manages to find my problem spots. Even the ones I don't know about! The place is a no frills place - clean and cozy and great value for money. Everyone who works there is masked and patrons are encouraged/expected to be too. Jen, the receptionist, is also super sweet. They used to be cash only and there is an ATM onsite, but now they also take credit card - for a small fee. Surin is located in a shopping plaza, so there is a free parking lot. I've never had trouble find a space but there's also plenty of free street parking around. read more

I've been here a couple times and the first time way pretty amazing but more recently, the massage was just okay. I asked for deep tissue, but it felt very light -- and I'm usually someone who asks for moderate pressure. I also asked them to focus on neck and back because I was having some serious pain, but they basically just did the whole body saying that it's all connected. Don't get me wrong -- it was a decent massage but definitely not the best I've had, and I really just wished they listened to me so I could treat my pain. I was kind of annoyed that my asks were ignored. This is a no frills place, not a fancy spa. Front desk receptionist is quite nice. Prices are very reasonable. Kind of tacky how they have a slightly inflated tip chart out front. Maybe I would have felt better about it if it was the best massage ever, but businesses should pay workers a living wage and tips should be a bonus for good service. read more

We got Jenny and Danny and right now we are so relaxed we might just fall asleep on our drive home . Be careful what you wish for though, when they ask "more pressure?" They mean it. A great little thai massage place tucked into a little strip mall with decent parking. Came here after having called my favorite massage place for the third time to find that my favorite masseuse was still not available, and it was nearby and well-reviewed. Received the "$39" cash price deep combination at 12 noon on a sunday, came a bit early, and they were able to assist me right away. upon entering, you change into little padded slippers and leave your shoes on the shoe rack, and follow the lady into a small curtained room with the massage bed. for the "deep combination" massage i was instructed to remove my clothing with the exception of my underwear and change into the garment that was laid on the table/bed. this is a very loose garment that i could not really figure out whether it was for my legs or my arms as it just had like two wide swaths of material that could easily have either been for arms or legs, and it has these two long pieces of material almost like overall straps that i couldn't tell, again, were supposed to go around my waist or over my shoulders but i made an educated guess that this was some sort of leg covering and did my best to put them on and when the masseuse came in, she confirmed that i had placed them on the correct half of my body. Score. the massage was pretty great. the deep combination has a lot of thai elements, so you're lying on your front and the masseuse will sort of walk on top of you, supporting herself partially with the bamboo-ish supports from the ceiling. most of the massage was pretty methodical, formulaic almost, but when she got to my problem area which was my back/right shoulder area, she really started going in for it and murmured something like, "very tight," and worked that area especially well, which i appreciated. she seemed to know what she was doing and worked out my knots and hard spots. i asked her her name afterward and she said something to the effect of "Yaya," so, without having experienced the hands of another masseuse at this location, so far i can only vouch for Yaya, who is very good and very skilled. read more

It's about time I wrote this review! I've been coming to The Surin Day Spa for over 7 or 8 years, and their massages have never disappointed me. I always opt for a 90-minute Thai massage. The masseuses are great and consistent and target all your knots. The spa is clean, sparse, and no frills. You can't beat the price of the massage either - it's $1/per minute, so my 90-minute massage was $90. This is one of the best prices I've seen in this area for this quality. And I've never had an issue getting same-day service every time I've called. I highly recommend The Surin Day Spa if you want a consistent experience every time you get a massage. read more

I'm SO glad to have discovered Surin! I usually go to fancier (aka pricier) massage spas, but I wish I would've gone to Surin more frequently instead. Yes, this is a no-frills (minimal decor, no heated and adjustable massage table) but the space is clean, comfortable, and the temperature is kept just right. The masseuse and overall massage experience is just as good... actually, even better than those fancier spas. The reception (older lady) asked me to leave a minimum of $15 tip. I was leaving $10, and she kept asking me if my massage was not good, then pointed at the tip sign that said $15 minimum tip. The masseuse I had today was superb that I actually had to ask for her name towards the very end as she's my new go-to! The place first got my attention by the great reviews, and after going to their website the prices were reasonable too. It was my first time getting a Thai massage, so I tried out their advertised massage special (deep combo). It was great! A Thai massage could be a little "rougher" than your traditional massage with the masseuse stepping on your back and stretching out your body, but for me/my body this is exactly what I needed to get those harder knots worked on. This place is legit, kinda don't want to write about it and let the cat out of the bag, but they deserve it. If you talk too loud everyone getting a massage can hear you. :) Also, please do not ask the people working here if they are cleaning everything properly it's very rude and they're obviously cleaning the place very well. They don't ask you if you've washed your feet or taken a bath before they touch you! This place is fantastic and the people working here are very nice!! The ambience is very soothing and relaxing. They always play very soft music which adds to the relaxation. I also like that it smells like fresh linen. I usually ask for Ken to do my massages he's very firm and gentle at the same time! :) The staff is being very careful with people entering and checking temperatures.
