Happy Thanksgiving all. Our family decided to do the holiday meal out this year, so we went to Tangier, in Akron, OH. From what my Grandma told me, Tangier used to be THE spot. Big names came here, from all around, to entertain the masses. I knew of it from my day at the university, so I was hoping for a unique, turkey day experience. We made a reservation and waited about 15 mins, not bad, and they were packed. We got seated at a nice table, near the bar. Outr server was nice, but she didn't give her mame. The dinner was buffet-style and was pretty chaotic. The food was really good, to be fair, but the restaurant was gross. The bathrooms were a smelly mess and the floors and walls were badly in need of repair. I am not sure if they've been doing this for awhile, but the place needs hosed down, before next year's offering. read more

So, we decide to celebrate mother day different this year. My decided to try the Tangier. I walked into this unusual restraint and noticed the terrible musty smell. It was so strong, it gave me a headache. This place is very old. The decor was very old and tacky. We had made a reservation, and thought we would be seated immediately. We had to wait at least 20 minutes, and the restaurant wasn't even busy! When we were finally seated, I went to go get food. Everything on the buffet bar looked all over the place and messy. I looked at the plates and was disgusted that there were food on the plates! I took a clean one and got food. I tried the food I got and EVERYTHING was cold! The only warm food was the mashed potatoes. The ham was cold and had an odd taste about it. The sausage tasted ok, but I have to say frozen sausage was better than this travesty! The pancakes tasted like they were made from boxed mix. I decided to try the eggs. They were were cold and discussing. I than tried the mashed potatoes. They were ok, and I can confidently say that that was the only food I liked. At this point I was disgusted. The only reason I kept eating was to satisfy the expensive price. The only thing I felt was edible was the ham and potatoes. As I got more food, I was very upset that the fruit tray was always empty. I then had desert. The cookies seemed store bought, and old (just like the rest of the restaurant). The chocolate cake was ok, but the balance of flavors was disturbed by the frosting. Classic Akron venue. I had a couple sorority formals here. I believe I saw Blue Oyster Cult perform here. I have eaten here a time or two. A little gaudy. A little outdated. Straight out of the 70s. Needs some love. But it is a local institution. Everyone should go here at least once. read more

If I could give this place 0 stars... I would. My family of 8 had a reservation for a buffet for a Easter Brunch. When we arrived more than half of the buffet area was cleared. After making one trip to the buffet, there were some foods that had run out. When questioned about a refill of food, the staff responded with attitude, and stated they were not refilling any food. They were silly enough to have to given us a reservation at 2:30 when breakfast ended at 2:00 (Mind you a BRUNCH). NEVER! GOING! BACK! read more

Mothers Day Brunch Review: We have no complaints! Praise the food gods!! Easter Brunch was a disaster where we went so we were hesitant hoping this place was better. We were not disappointed!! This place obviously knows what they are doing. They were well staffed, organized, and friendly! The food was displayed beautifully in the gorgeous interior around the fountain and was kept full and looking good the whole time we were there. Tables were set beautifully with center pieces and clean linens! Food details: appetizers included cheeses, hummus, veggies, salad, pasta salad, etc YUM! Breakfast included eggs, pancakes, sausage and eggs YUM! Pancakes were soft and yummy which is hard to do staying warm in a pan. Other meal items were veggie lasagna, fried chicken (best things ever, sooooo crispy!), mashed potatoes which were so creamy, pork, ham, and steak! Dessert was a huge variety of cheesecakes, cakes, and pies. Heaven. Only wish was that there was more fruit. Can't wait to come back for another event, we were impressed!! read more

When I ate at Tangiers I had chicken with Mashed potatoes. Pretty basic right? Tasted fine, nothing crazy good but nothing crazy bad. But there's one reason I will never go back: food poisoning. I started to get it a few hours after dinner. Then all night. In fear that I was one of many, I called Tangiers the next day and asked to speak to a manager. When the individual who answered the phone asked if it was something they could help with before they got the manager, I told them I had food poisoning. They then said "oh my goodness, one moment," and then hung up on me. Super classy. I will never go back, obviously, but also let anyone who asks my opinion on the food about my story and the lack of concern on Tangiers part. read more

I was not impressed with the Thanksgiving buffet. The food was ok at best. We were the last seating at 2:30 and it was obvious that everyone was ready to go home. We were rushed, we were half way through our meal before we were served drinks. And at the end there were no desserts left. The Tangier is an Akron Ohio landmark - mainly for its outdated gaudiness when BIG HAIR and GLAM ROCKERS were in. Unfortunately, while back in the 70s and 80s it was THE hot spot in Akron ... it's now 2016 and The Tangier is in dire need of a lot of maintenance, upkeep, and definitely at least closing for a good week of scrubbing down and fumigating. Landmark or not ... Demolition wouldn't be out of the question and a new Tangier built on the current site because the current facility is way past its structural prime and the layout is just bad. It's not because the owners don't have the money, they just don't want to invest anything into it and are letting it decay like the rest of Akron. Parking area - always has a couple territorial panhandlers sheltering in it begging for money. I caught one urinating between two parked cars. However - using the parking deck as a restroom is probably better than using the actual restrooms inside Tangier, which are horrible and smell like an open pit latrine. They appear not to have been cleaned or seen a mop in some time. Cutlery was not completely washed, food was still on it. However, the worst issue with Tangier is that Food Poisoning is a common complaint ... I've gotten it, friends and family have gotten it and when I checked it recently Tangier was classified as a risk level IV by the Health Department due to poor food prep and handling activities. Basically - they have a high potential for serving spoiled reheated food, cross-contaminated food, and preparing food using wrong temperatures (which allows bacteria growth and food poisoning). I just don't know who is putting in wonderful glowing reviews of The Tangier for receptions, concerts or parties ... after I saw the cockroach just past the bar area, I was pretty done with the place. I hate to bash such a well known landmark (because it is definitely an experience, like stepping in a time machine and going back decades) ... but The Tangier is just one major issue away from becoming a memory. The John S. Knight Center down the street is probably a safer pick than the The Tangier at this point for a catered event. Not as interesting décor, but cleaner. read more

Valentine's weekend. The sweet romantic sounds of the 60's pop group, the Association. Me in a nice blazer and vest, hair freshly cut. My date? Father in law. Yeah, it was a real bromantic experience. The sparkling mosaics and glowing lamps make for a very memorable show. The place looks exactly the same as twelve years ago. And the ticket prices are exactly the same as well. I guess that's the perk of not having a bunch of superfluous and expensive updates. We were seated very close. Like close enough to see liver spots! The sound was crystal clear(which the band itself acknowledged). Servers were attentive, but not intrusive. Parking was free in the attached garage. Right on bustling west Market street. Errr.... I got to walk around and look at all the framed press clippings and ephemera. Some notables: a signed Famous Amos poster(not sure if he put on a live baking demonstration?), a giant David Brenner poster(never seen that before) and Michael Stanley(not a poster, he was washing dishes). They don't get too many relevant acts in there that often, but every couple of years it's nice to stop in. If I lived closer, I would probably visit as often as I do the Winchester(which is blocks from my house and also rarely has relevant artists that often). About once every couple of years. read more

We had Easter dinner here and it was TERRIBLE!!! The food was cold. They were running out of everything and not filling any of the entree's up. People were standing waiting for them to be filled. The chicken was hard and cold. They didn't have that many desserts at all! No garnishments at the table for the roast beef. After paying 29.95 a plate + 20% tip we left hungry and cheated!! We ate here 2 years ago for Easter and it was good, so don't know what happened! Very UNDERSTAFFED!!! read more

It you want a magical night have your wedding reception at Tangiers!! About a year and half ago my fiance (who is now my husband) and I were looking for a banquet hall to have our wedding reception. Tangiers was the first place we were going to look and we made a pact that we wouldn't jump on anything right away. We wanted to explore all of our options around the area. As soon as we walked in we fell in love with the unique architecture, the beaded curtains, the fountain room...This place looked magical and that's exactly the feel I wanted for our wedding. However... we did have a budget that we were going to stick to, and I thought we would never be able to afford it... Angelica, the general manager, met us right away, gave us a tour, answered all our questions, and gave us a folder of all the different packages we could choose. We were blown away, but still told her we needed to think about it. We left and looked at a couple other banquet halls but all we could think of is having it at Tangiers. Also, the price was fantastic compared to these other places that didn't seem half as nice. We called her right away and she said we could come in to the restaurant this evening to try some of the food. We got there and the food was delicious! We were sold! So We set our date for October 19, 2013 in the fountain room. We were inviting around 200 but expected around 175 to actually make it. We were afraid of the room being too small but they assured us it would be fine, that the room can fit up to 235. As we got closer to the wedding we had the tasting for our buffet. They set up a nice table by the fountain room and even let me bring my parents. They gave us complimentary wine while we tried all the delicious food. It was so hard to decide! We ended up going with the Prime Rib and Chicken Marsala from the Oasis package. My husband and I live in VA and Angelica made this whole process easy on us. She was always willing to meet with us when we were in town and was great at answering e-mails. The day of the wedding went so smooth! They let us come early to take pictures because it was pouring down rain. At first I was upset I wouldn't get my gorgeous outdoor pictures but Tangiers has so many cool photo opportunities. It ended up turning our great! When we were done with pictures they had a room set up for the bridal party with appetizers and drinks while we waited for our entrance. They kept us on schedule and ready to go. The room was decorated more beautiful than imagined and I felt like I was in a dream. The food was amazing and I'm not just saying that because I was a starving bride, who hadn't had a chance to eat all day! ha ha. The staff was fantastic and I never had to wait for anything. Everyone else kept raving how great the food was, the atmosphere, and the great time they were having. We were having the time of our life! Towards the end of the night the bar was still open and we grabbed a few more drinks and ended up making friends with the other bride and groom from the other banquet hall. It was great to compare our days and celebrate! I highly recommend Tangiers to anyone who is looking for a banquet hall for ANY event. They really make your night run smoothly and are great people to work with. I just wish I had another event in the near future to have there! :) read more

Arguably the worst service we have ever had. We purchased the advanced buffet and show tickets. You would think service wouldn't matter much for a buffet, but- watching the clock, we waited literally 45 minutes for a check and our server was nowhere to be seen. We went to the show and were greeted by a stone faced server who looked bitter to be there. We asked for drinks several times and she actually argued with us saying we did not order anything. Pair that with ice cold coffee and sub par buffet and we paid around $90 per person?!? Never again. Redemption however, was in the beautiful atmosphere, friendly bartender, and great entertainment. Kind of a shame this place is so lovely but I would be very hesitant to go back! read more

I saw "The Strange Familiar" play here when they came back from Los Angeles to do a hometown show. It was a great venue to see them in. The stage is very intimate, but there is room for a lot of people to sit in the crowd....COMFORTABLY! you can order food and drinks while watching, and you don't have to stand anywhere. thats important to me. i do not like to stand. read more

The Tangier has great shows in its cabaret! You get to see big names in an intimate setting. I saw Aaron Neville there and could see the sweat on his face from the very back. last time i saw him it was in a pavilion and could only see him on the big projection screen. Headed a little south of Cleveland to watch a friend's band play a NYE performance at this venue. The band, "Get On Up!" gets 5 stars. The venue as follows: The Good: great sound from all areas of the venue. Setup for the buffet was just left of stage. Easily accessible and set up well, very clean, and food looked appetizing. I wish the food tasted as good as it looked. Venue had a cooperative agreement with an area hotel (complete with shuttle) for discounted rate overnight. Open bar (definitely got my money's worth), but the drinks were "well" drinks. No top shelf liquor offered. The Not-So Good: purchasing tickets for event through The Tangier handled through a ticketing agency (think, Ticketmaster) and a surcharge was assessed. Tickets were at will call, so not sure why the surcharge. Kinda lame, IMHO. The drinks were pretty weak. They had 2-3 bartenders working a VERY packed bar. I think this made it difficult to pour proper drinks. Drinks served in plastic cups. I'm sorry, but if I'm dressing up and paying a premium to be there, and I'm an adult, I'd really like a glass. Plastic cups are for college kids who can't handle themselves in a bar. Lastly, the decor is pretty tacky. Think 1980s Moroccan theme. Just didn't do it for me. 5 stars for band, 3 stars for venue: split the difference for rating. read more

I had never been to Tangier before I was told they pack you in and food is bad.. I really wanted to see the band that was there so we got tickets and had dinner downtown. It was a fire hazzard! I cannot belive they get away with the overcrowding! Too many people the seating was awful. I could not see the show because one of the people I was with head was in the way then if I moved my husband couldn't see. My neck still hurts from having to contort my self just to get my $45 worth. The tables should not be more than $10 or 15. You can't move. For all the people there were only 3 stalls in the restroom. I will never go to another show there! Never in my life have I gone to a show that tables did not face the stage. It was very disappointing. . Glad I didn't get the food I'm sure it was just as bad! Only reason 2 stars is because the band did great! Or it would be 0 stars read more

This place is straight out of the 70s/80s complete with the mirrored disco ball. It also has perhaps a HANDFUL of decent seats but the bulk of them are very bad. If two of you are going to a concert you have to buy four seats if you want to face the stage (not kidding), and there aren't that many of those seats even available So in the alternative you're relegated to six person card tables at which they smash eight people. They are perpendicular to the stage and even eight rail thin people would be challenged to fit in the allotted space, so if you're on the end of a table not only can you not see - at all - but you are constantly banged into and stepped on by anyone trying to pass, because you now are sitting in the aisle. This is also quite a fire hazard and I can't believe the Fire Marshall hasn't shut them down.. We saw Michael Stanley and he was excellent. His voice is excellent, he did a nice mix of old and new songs, so I will be looking for him playing at any other venue because I will not be going back to the Tangier unless they remodel. read more

Attended the Ohio Motocross Assoc. Banquet last night, and this establishment did a really nice job. The event was sold out, and in spite of the children and adults running around, the wait staff did a great job of directing us to the buffet area and clearing tables. They were efficient and polite. The buffet area was a bit of a hike, but nobody seemed to mind. The food was good to above average for a buffet style meal. The bathrooms were clean, and there are 2 ladies rooms with multiple stalls. All in all, we had a very positive experience. read more

Tangier is a classy and fun venue with a fascinating history. You walk and down the main hallway see pictures of all the famous artists who have performed there throughout the years. While attending a concert, we ordered a bottle of wine. Our server ran our charge card stating that it gets pretty dark during the show, making it difficult to see. She gave me the card back. She also gave poor service during the show. At the end of the show, she never came back allowing me to get a receipt or write in a tip. My charge now shows a $9.00 tip on a $26.00 bottle of wine!! Be very aware!! She never deserved that generous of a tip!! This was our third show there. Three strikes, we are out! We won't be attending any more shows at Tangier. read more

The space is very nice, it's obvious there is a lot of history there. That was the highlight. I'll begin by walking in, the parking garage was dirty, with empty cups & bottles littering the stairwell and entrance. Probably about 30-40 people were waiting for the tables and the hostesses meekly called out names, a better system was needed. As for the buffet the line was poorly organized, two lines going in opposite directions meeting at the carving station. A real mess, confused people all over the place, someone should have been guiding the patrons. The buffet promised panko breaded fish, we got a tasteless North American blandfish, no coating, no flavor, just bleh. The green bean & mushroom bake was nowhere to be seen. Also they stated the crudite was award winning, really? Mini carrots and celery won an award? The rest of the food was ok, the prime rib was good but it was probably from GFS. Finally, the desserts were mostly already gone and not being replenished. Service was not great either, the waitress had difficulty refilling drinks and that was all she had to do. The check took 10 minutes to arrive after requesting, and it took another 15 to cash out. The worst thing of all was the restaurant was not clean, the men's room was downright filthy. I understand places can get busy, but there was no excuse for the condition of the downstairs men's room. I'd probably give it 1 star, but grandma was happy, so that's worth a star. However she said she wants to cook at home next year, I look forward to that. read more

We went for the Thanksgiving Buffet. Reservations were made a week or so in advance, but when we got there were told there was a 15-20 minute wait...50 minutes later we were seated. The food was okay. The price was high. The prime rib and turkey were cold. The desserts were not very good. I think they were out of some of the desserts. I felt sorry for the people seated after 3:30 due to the staff starting to remove half the buffet. It wasn't their fault they got seated so late. I will not go back again. The only reason I am giving 3 stars is because our server was very nice and helpful. read more

What a disappointing Thanksgiving dinner we had yesterday... There were just four of us - my mom, my stepdad, my husband, and myself. We really enjoyed the food last year but the service was underwhelming. This year they seated the four of us at a table for 7. It made it difficult to talk at times. Upon being seated at our table it took over 5 minutes before I could flag down someone to get a beverage. That person happened to be a manager. She apologized for the situation and got a pitcher of water and filled our drink glasses herself. We went to the buffet and three of the four of us never got a slice of turkey as each time we went up to the buffet they were out. I requested the crackers to be refilled with the appetizers and that took about 10 minutes as well. The food quality was okay but there definitely wasn't as much of a selection as there was last year. Eventually I ended up asking the manager to get us a pitcher of water for the table so we could deal with filling our glasses ourselves. Two other servers stopped by to clear plates from our table but never to fill our glasses. We ended up asking a third server for our check and I commented to her that she was the third server in addition to the manager who serviced our table and she responded saying that three servers are assigned to our table. This was bizarre and I said this to the manager and she said that wasn't the case. Either way, service was a complete train wreck and really put a damper on our meal. The manager recognized this and removed $20 from mine and my husband's bill and my mom and step dads bill. I was very appreciative of her efforts. This would have been a one star rating otherwise. Unfortunately, despite the manager's efforts, we will not be returning to Tangiers again. read more

So disappointed in The Tangier. They catered an 80th birthday party earlier this year. They switched rooms at the last minute and were not setup on time. Also, ordered the chef-carved turkey and ham (was told the chef carves it in front of the guests at no charge and it adds a touch of elegance to the affair) well...no chef, no carving in front of the guests. They tried to cover up and say this was the room and it was supposed to be setup a certain way, not even an apology or any discount given. Well, our own fault for not insisting on a contract. The catering office doesn't even give out contracts when you reserve the space. Who does business like that??? A lot of family came in from out of town and what a disappointment. Will not be using them again for any other family event in OH. read more

The food was excellent, she did an amazing job with the decor, and they gave us a great discount for having our wedding on a Friday night. great food. But I have to tell you all that they treat temp employees very badly. I was a temp. On first day hired in around 10a.m. I saw the owner and said good morning to him. Gave me a funny look, said nothing. Ten min later a manager came to me and said you have to leave, the owner smelled alcohol on you. .. after convincing them I had not been drinking she said just go to work.. Well all day I was told to do this and that better, I was too slow, etc, an obvious attack from many people it was ridiculous, and the owners daughter yelled at me for eating one quick bite of food while I worked in the service area. Every employee was doing this but I was picked on. Went to get paid cash a couple days later and they tried to pay me for 4 hrs when I worked 9 hrs, and the managers acted like I was some kind of problem or trouble maker. The service area smelled like sewage. Near the food and drinks no less.... Bunch of assholes let me tell you. read more
