We were staying at Croydon (attached hotel) and decided we would go to the Tavern for lunch. We decided to split the smashburger and a order of the chicken wings. We've stayed at Croydon in the past and always skipped Tavern due to its low Yelp reviews but i gotta say i DONT SEE the terrible food and service??? Both were excellent. Burger, fries, wings, and drinks were all above expectation. Server was great, outside seating was great, and had a decent amount of customers for a Thursday afternoon... DONT go off of the 3 star Yelp review! The Tavern is definitely above the 3 star reviews, I think its people coming here expecting to be getting a 5 star lobster and caviar fine dining experience on a broke budget lol... I ordered the chef's Mahi Mahi which was good. Also had a glass of Sauvignon Blanc which was not good, but there weren't many options on the list of wines by the glass. Restaurants in Miami Beach tend to automatically add a service charge of 20%. This place added a service charge of 6% and a gratuity of 14%, and the server explained that any extra gratuity I added would go directly to her. So I did feel pressured into adding another tip. The difference between the 6% service charge added and the 14% gratuity added is that the tax is calculated on the subtotal that includes the 6% service charge. So that 6% service charge is like the Healthy SF surcharge that many San Francisco restaurants add ranging from around 4% to 7% (but not all, because a minority of SF restaurants include those costs into their menu items prices). read more

Had a great time here two nights in a row on our first trip to Miami! Atmosphere is great, and there's lots of soft ambient lighting. We were greeted warmly by the hostess and told there was no wait for indoor seating, so we headed inside without delay. To start, my partner ordered a virgin piña colada, and I kept it simple with water. She immediately declared it the best piña colada she's ever had--creamy, perfectly blended, and not overly sweet. I'm not usually a fan of coconut, but after one sip, I had to take another. I'd give it a solid 9/10, and she insisted it deserved a 10/10. For our entrees, I went with the steak tacos on the recommendation of our waitress (who said they were better than the chicken), and I'm so glad I took her advice. The steak was juicy, flavorful, and cooked to perfection--every bite was seasoned just right. I honestly couldn't eat them fast enough. 9.6/10 from me! My partner stole a bite and loved them too. She ordered the shrimp scampi, and let's just say it barely lasted five minutes on her plate. She gave it a full 10/10, raving about the flavor and freshness. The only downside was the long wait time for the food, but with how delicious, hot, and fresh everything was, it felt worth it. If that's the price for quality, we'll wait again. Our waiter was attentive and helpful, only issue is that it took a really long time for the food to come out, but they were pretty busy. A cute little family sat near me, and I overheard the youngest say, "Dad, I love the time when it's time to eat!" I chuckled thinking, "Me too!" I picked The Tavern for my first night in Miami because I was looking for some Cuban inspired food and wanted something in walking distance of my hotel. I was able to get there by walking a few blocks down the ocean-side walkway, which added to the charm of the experience. The service was initially prompt although lagged at times. And the kitchen mixed up the order of someone near me. I noticed my waiter touched the rim of glasses with the pitcher when he was pouring water, and that is a no-no in my book. I don't like it when hands or serving items touch the rim of glasses. My arroz con pollo was a generous portion, had flavor, and was filling. However, it felt closer to cafeteria fare than abuelita's cocina. The chicken was a little dry and the rice seemed to lack a pop of freshness. The plantains needed a pinch of salt or maybe a squeeze of citrus to bring out the flavor more. The table next to me said they had been there for lunch and had amazing hamburgers, so they came back for dinner too. Maybe I would have been happier with a hamburger, but when I eat out, tend to look for menu items that I can't easily get or make at home. They also automatically include a 14% gratuity and a separate service fee. The outside of the venue is incredibly pretty with the nice lights and tables and chairs on the patio. But then upon entering you get like the cheesy decor on the wall of random pictures and quotes. I understand this place is open 24/7 so I guess they have to keep it weird for those 3am visitors lol. The service was okay. It took a while for someone to come to our table and greet us. We asked for the tv behind us to be changed which took a while which is okay, I'm sure on a Friday night they were kinda busy. The food was just okay as well. Nothing that knocked our socks off.
