My husband and I both agreed that this is our new favorite restaurant in Abilene! Great food. Definitely nothing to write home about but they did a good job on the quality of food. I got hamburger and it was just regular nothing quite stood out but I still finished it. Good place! French dip was also great! Not bad just they are definitely proud of their food. read more

Delicious food and great service at The Taylor County Taphouse . We had "the mother board" sausage tray and the brat burger. The brat burger is smothered with cheese sauce and sautéed onions and served on a pretzel roll. The mother board came with bratwurst, kielbasa, jalapeno and cheddar sausage, and a pepper jack weisswurst. I liked the jalapeno and cheddar best and my husband liked the kielbasa. Then dessert was Life of Pie Abilene Mega Peanut Butter Cup. Pie perfect for the Reese's lover. Aaron, our server, was amazing. Very attentive and kind. Perfect dining experience. read more

We came in when they first open years ago, and weren't really all that impressed. We decided to stop in again the last time we were in Abilene and were so happy we did! The restaurant is on the smaller side, but they have made it where the patio is both air conditioned and heated, making it more welcoming all around! We started with an order of the Satan's Huevos, which are delicious and not too heavy. We decided to split a bowl of French Onion Soup, which did not disappoint! It was my husbands first time having that soup, and now he is a life long fan. For our entrées we went with the Dude Abides Sandwich (CFS sandwich) and the Phenomenal Philly. While the dude was extremely good, especially with the Jalapeño ranch...the Philly was outstanding! We could not get over how underrated this sandwich was! Our server, Ryan was friendly and timely. The food was the best we've had in Abilene. Started with Irish Nachos. The potato chips were crisp, the chili had a nice spice to it, the beer cheese was perfect. Wife had pulled pork sandwich and it was very good. Barbecue sauce had a sweet/smoky flavor and the fries were well seasoned and cooked. I had the Cajun Shrimp and Grits. Best I've had outside of New Orleans. Very spicy with perfectly cooked shrimp( tender, not rubbery or mushy). If the grits were a little creamier, I'd rank them even with NOLA. We split a key lime pie for dessert and it was excellent nice tangy aftertaste. Not quite Key West, but darn good. Can't wait to come back and try more items. read more

Supper club was fun. Shepherds Pie quite nice. I would not hate it if it was a regular menu item. Made reservations though I figured there would be room. When we got there the Hostess Lucy had our table set up and ready and made us feel welcome (worth the reservation). Reanna did an outstanding job making our meal enjoyable. She went above and beyond in every aspect of how she waited on us and cared for us. The hostess even stopped back by to check on us. We were made to feel special. Generally before you read this, I have given up providing reviews when Yelp "woked" - that is when they provided the "report racism" button - which I think is gone. Having said that, this is a rare posting because this meal was possibly one of the best ever. Feel free to look at my reviews pre- woke. I had the mutton and broccoli. I can assure you, I have traveled coast to coast frequently (again see past posts) - this is by far the best lamb ever. My husband and I are new to Abilene and still figuring out where our regular date night spots will be. This one is top of the list so far! We went on a late Saturday afternoon and Sunday around 11:30 in the morning. Both times were not too loud and we got our food in a decent amount of time. We sat outside the first visit, which was enclosed with a tented structure to keep the wind at bay but still had that outdoor feel. Our appetizer was the bacon wrapped quail with cheesy grits. It was just the right amount for two or three people to share and executed very well. The main course was a lamb dish with crispy Brussels sprouts and mashed potatoes (We chose to substitute the mashed potatoes with sweet potato hash). The lamb was cooked perfectly and not too gamey. The crispy Brussels sprouts were not very crisp but they did have a good flavor. The sweet potato hash was one of the best hashes I've ever had! The sweet potato itself was minced with corn, jalapeño, and bacon. It had a good kick to it from the jalapeños without being overpowering and the veggies were cooked perfectly. We did indulge in a little adult beverages with the apricot mead, which was sweet with a little burn at the end. This place seems to have an extensive wine and beer selection judging from the menu. My one complaint was that the coffee was not good, but I came there for the food and beer not excellent coffee. Overall, defined coming back and would highly recommend for a date or just hangout with friends. read more

I'm actually surprised that I haven't done a review here yet. Anyway, The Taylor County Taphouse is a great place for food and drink. They have a HUGE beer menu and some tasty selections on the food menu. I don't drink so this review will focus on the food. Atmosphere: Dark woods and cozy seating make for a great place to get a beer with friends and enjoy the time together. They also have a patio that can be enclosed during cool, hot, or windy weather. 1 Star Service: Waiter service restaurant. We were greeted politely at the hostess table and since we were there right at opening, we didn't have to wait for a table. We sat outside on the patio. Our waiter came quickly and took drink orders and asked for appetizer requests. It's amazing to me how many waiters/waitresses don't ask for appetizers when they ask for drink orders. Appetizers and desserts are two of the highest margin items on most menus. Money lost for both the restaurant and waiter. Anyways, I'll hop off that high horse and get on with it. Our waiter was awesome. He refilled drinks promptly and always seemed to be at our table when we needed him. Also very polite and appeared to be enjoying himself, which is refreshing to see considering it is a customer oriented job. And we all know how customers can be. 2 Stars Food: We started off with some of their "Irish Nachos" in the Texas style (they also offer a Philly style which is as you would expect.) The Texas style consisted of a large pile of Yukon Gold potato chips (which surprisingly stayed quite crunchy all the way down to the bottom of the bowl), piled on top with their signature "Taphouse Chili," melted cheddar, "Taphouse Queso," fresh (not pickled) jalapeños, sour cream, and green onions. Their chili and queso alone were good enough to eat a big bowl of with a spoon. Some of the best "nachos" I've ever eaten. We split this appetizer between 3 of us, and couldn't eat it all. Lots to share. The wife ordered the "Taphouse Club Sandwich," which appeared to be a hot item on the menu as I saw several being delivered to other tables. A typical toasted club sammy, but with avocado, provolone, and garlic Mayo. She particularly enjoyed it. I won't say much about the fries except that they are very good. Well seasoned and crispy. My daughter chose "The Dude Abides." A terrific nod to both the Texas staple from Dairy Queen as well as to the movie "The Big Lebowski." It was a gargantuan (seriously, you can split this between AT LEAST 2 people) sandwich which, as previously stated, is a glorified version of the Dude from DQ. A massive chicken fried steak that was topped with pepperjack, lettuce, tomato, and jalapeño ranch, and then snuggled between a large (it had to be) ciabatta bun. I HAD to have a bite and it did not disappoint. Finally, I personally opted for "The Phenomenal Philly." You guessed it, the Taphouse's version of the Philly Cheesesteak sandwich. A foot long baguette style roll, with American sliced cheese then topped with thin-sliced ribeye that's been coated in their homemade queso. They then throw on some caramelized peppers and onions. Another massive sammy that I was unable to finish. It was delicious. 2 Stars Overall: 5 star visit. "The Taphouse" as most locals call it, has made quite a name for itself in Abilene. Serving unique and original food items that are well prepared, alongside a vast beer tasting menu, has made the establishment quite the success since they opened. read more

I have mixed thoughts about the Taphouse. I've been several times at lunch and was not impressed. For the price, nothing special. They were off my lunch rotation. Glenda had never been here, so I agreed to come for dinner. This meal changed my mind. We asked to sit on the patio. Started with Satan's Huevos. Deviled eggs with crawfish and jalapeños. Loved it. Glenda got the Bat outta Hell Meatloaf, which had a sriracha glaze. Luckily, it wasn't too hot and she enjoyed it. I got the Wicked Smoked Chicken with mashed potatoes and asparagus. The smoked taste of the chicken was incredible. The mashed potatoes and asparagus were just right. So impressed! Service was good and the patio wasn't too noisy. Looking at the Yelp pictures, I see several other things I would like to try. So, Taphouse, your back in the rotation. See you soon. read more

This was my first time eating here and service and kitchen was not great. I ordered the Steak Diane cooked medium and sauce on side. The first time it came out with the sauce on top which I requested on the side and it also came out cooked well done. I sent it back because I'm not going to eat something that I'm not going to enjoy. The second time it comes out the steak is cooked very rare which once again I asked for it to be cooked medium. The server proceeded to tell us that the kitchen rushed it. Another person in the group ordered the ribeye cooked rare and it came out medium which also got sent back and finally came out right. The server informed us that she comp the meals but the steaks were the only thing that got comp and we still ended up paying $25 each for a couple sides. Overall, not a very good first experience and I doubt there will be another experience. read more

With a quick glance of the menu, it's easy to have high expectations. After all, the food selection has a good variety to choose from and they all sound good. But not everything is as it seems. My experience left more to be desired. For example, the wait. The food took forever to come out. And when it did, it came out half right which left some of the people at the table with food while the others had to wait. Not a fun time to eat when others gotta wait and vice versa. I got the: - Texas Craft Beer & Cheese Soup: subtle yet great contrast of flavors - Chili-Rubbed Pork Loin: I found this to be a bit dry and chewy. Would have liked it to have been more moist and flavorful - 18 oz. Taphouse Black Angus Ribeye: which was great. No complaints except it came out undercooked the first time All in all, I was hoping to leave satisfied but instead left with a slightly bad taste in my mouth. I give them a 3/5. read more

Exceeded expectations in every category... Kinsey, our server, was so attentive and personable. She answered all our questions and made perfect recommendations in both starters and enteees, signature cocktails & a bottle of Malbec. We took her up on every one & they were everything we could've ever wanted and more! Balvenie 15 yr & Guinness for the Hubs (which we rarely ever find a place in Fort Worth that even carry Balvenie or Guinness on tap....) As for the food: is there someone in the kitchen that we can at least shake their hand?!?! The quail and deviled eggs, the sausage, the GRITS, even the Brussel sprout side with balsamic and bacon?!?! My friend and I were exploring Abilene and wanted to go somewhere with TVs and alcohol. So we came here at about 4:30PM on a Sunday. There were a few men at the bar and maybe 2 other patrons in the main dining area. We were seated immediately at a booth and the servers were very friendly, suggested different beers and food. I'm not a real beer drinker but I like Ales so I got the Hummingbird. For food I got the Cajun Style Shrimp and Grits. My friend got Bacon Wrapped Quail and Deviled eggs with fried Crawfish. The sauce in the grits was a bit on the creamy side which was a bit too much for me, but it was still really tasty. They used jumbo shrimp which were seasoned and cooked to perfection. The grits was on the more grainy side, but I love grits as long as they're cooked so that wasn't an issue. Of course we tried each others food... the quail was so tender and the bacon added a nice touch and together it had a nice smoky but juicy taste. The deviled eggs were nice. The egg whites were fresh and tender and the yolk mixture was very smooth and tasted great. The fried crawfish on the top was a nice touch. I mentioned to my friend I might have to stop in Abilene for a good meal anytime I'm driving across TX! read more

My friend and I stopped in here, after shopping. I had the Philly Cheesesteak and fries. She had the hamburger and fries. She loved the hamburger and we both agreed that the French fries were excellent. The Philly cheesesteak had delicious meat on it, however the cheese that was used, reminded me of gas station nacho cheese sauce. I guess if you like that orange cheese whiz kind of cheese, then you would like it. Too me, it was not what I expected. So, next time, I would probably order the hamburger. Service was good, until it came time to pay. The waiter never came back to get our credit cards, and we had to walk them to the front, after about 20 minutes. Absolutely delicious! Started out with a pickle beer, and old fashioned for the hubby. Reasonably priced for both. For an app, we got a sausage board. SO YUMMY, but beware, the jalapeño sausage is SPICYYYYY. And I'm the girl who puts hot sauce on everything. Even that was too spicy for me lol. For our main courses, I got the chicken strips with gravy and the husband got chicken fried steak. Both excellent. Our server Sam was awesome, and super attentive the whole night. Since we had arrived first, we placed our drink order ordering two martinis. One dirty martini, the other martini olives with a twist of lemon. They brought the dirty martini out, but had to return the other because the waitress said there was something black floating in it. At this time, our friends joined us, each ordering a beer. When the waitress brought the two beers and the replacement martini(#2), no olives and no twist. We let the waitress know that the drink was not as ordered. She comes back to the table with another replacement martini (#3), still missing olives and a twist. A few minutes later, a man comes to the table, introducing himself as the bartender. He wants to know why his waitress is in tears crying. All four of us look at him in disbelief and puzzlement as to why a waitress would be crying when no one was rude or unkind to her. We explained what happened. The bartender was progressively getting more and more loud, aggressive, and punitive in his tone. He made me very uncomfortable. So much so, I was nervous and accidentally knocked over my drink as a result. Leaving glass and drink on the table and floor. At that point, the bartender threw the bill on the table, telling us they will not be serving us, and asked us to leave. This was a totally unnecessary, ridiculous display of unprofessional behavior. This place is sorely lacking in customer service. Totally 100% ridiculous. read more

This was our first time trying this restaurant. We came hoping they would have some kind of beer we liked. It was going to be a 35 minute wait at 5:30 pm on a Saturday. That was fine. While waiting we saw friends seated on the patio. The two friends agreed we could join them instead of waiting. We let the hostess know we would be sitting with friends. They had already ordered cocktails. It took a few minutes for a server to come to the table with menus for us. But one showed up. She took our drink order. All was good until she showed up with their cocktails. One was placed on the table. One she was taking back because she saw something floating in it. She took the drink away and came back with our beers. In the mean time it was figured out that our friends cocktails were to be made vastly different. However they were both martinis. Our friend reordered the correct type of martini he had ordered the first time. Then it was delivered with no garnish or twist, so those were requested after we all ordered our food. The next thing we know, some bar tender comes to our table and starts yelling at us all about why is his waitress crying. We explained that the drinks were made incorrectly. Next thing we know he is still yelling at all of us that they refuse to bring us food and the manager will not come out to talk to us. I had barely touched my beer. Bartender guy threw a bill on the table. Our friend who did get her cocktail then accidentally knocked her drink over and the glass broke with drink spilling every where. He starts yelling again to not touch anything. And nobody rushed back to clean up. Our friends had dogs, so we left so they wouldn't have the dogs get in any glass. Didn't even finish our drinks. I politely informed the hostess as we left what was going on and that is no way to treat customers when EVERYTHING had been their error. That yelling was completely unacceptable. Nobody had done or said anything that should make a waitress cry. Also you don't throw a bill at customers while you are refusing service. While you might have provided some future memory to laugh about, your staff needs some serious customer service training. No need to yell at us over olives and a lemon twist. I have eaten here many times since they opened after finding out about their oysters. I brought my sister here for her birthday today. I was disappointed this time. Enough to drop the my rating here. I came expecting to spend a bit because my sister and I love their oysters. I dropped just over 2 bills not including tip. The ribeye was cooked correctly but was tough and lacked seasoning. No tuna so my sister ordered salmon. It was bland. A side of broccoli which consisted of just 2 broccolis cost $6. Overrated and overcharged. Even the side of asparagus, nearly the cost of $1 per asparagus was ridiculously costly. We had her 6yr old granddaughter and we ordered the baby burger which were 2 slider type burgers. They asked how well done. She wanted it pink. We didn't cut them to make sure that they were cooked correctly. We just realized that she wasn't caring to eat them. They were well done. Didn't eat half of one. We told our waitress. She left then came back to get the plate, burgers AND fries. They refunded 70 CENTS but didn't tell us till we got the ticket. Well, for that little we should've been told up front. Forget the comp, we would've taken the burgers home to the dogs. We ended up paying $5.29 (reg $5.99) for less than 1/2 a slider. Their reasoning is that we didn't tell them in time. Only thing that was good was the oysters, cheesecake and french press coffee. The waitress, Jessica, was awesome! We drove an hour just to eat here and go back home. I don't mind dropping money on a place that I like and enjoy to eat at. This is no longer that place. Well I ordered food directly from the bartender, and asked for a Cobb salad and a large side of fries. I also said while I am waiting can I get a beer . I was told the food was ready and they handed me the bag. I went and put the food to the side when I got home. When I did I noticed that the bag was missing the side of fries. I called back to let them know and to see how they would handle it. The manager on duty explained what her perception of the event took place and stopped talking. I said well I don't have the fries? Their response was well you didn't get charged for it? I said that's not the point I did ask for it and the person giving me the bag didn't say I forgot the fries, she wasn't busy and the person who took the order even asked me what size fries I wanted. I have been in the industry for a long time and thoroughly understand the importance of getting these orders right. But to have the owner of the establishment Josh Robinson scream at me and hang up because he doesn't know how to deal with guests of his establishment! I did explain to him because I am in the business I know that he needs qualified cooks I have recommended cooks his way. To hear his response to me was completely unacceptable. His training of his staff and management will only solidify his diminished ability to cook and serve quality food. He doesn't understand when someone who comes into his establishment and constantly pays for dinners and tips extremely well. Because I am in the industry and constantly heard how great his food is I finely conveyed my knowledge and experience to my wife that the establishment that she likes is only good for a couple items that can not be misunderstood as quality food. I think Mr Josh Robinson will find other patrons but not us any more. His burgers taste like old meat & I would not trust his ability to run an establishment such as his. He had the chance to make this right as I had tried to lead his management to make the right decision.when a guest says I am disappointed do not respond with you didn't get charged so don't worry about. You ask questions and give them the ability to vent even if it means nothing to you. You made your money off my beer not my Cobb salad so a side of fries means nothing to you bank deposits for the night but future business that's something else. Remember 1 person tells 10 friends and so on and if you did it to me after I told you who I work for and I since I gave been in this town I think off the top of my head spent a couple grand eating with in your establishment!
