This is one of my husband's favorite hang out spots. Since he works downtown, he is in walking proximity on the daily. I previously had only been during a Saturday night, years ago. I finally had the chance to spend some time there to eat and drink. I had the grilled cheese with a cup of tomato soup. The soup was very thick, but it got the job done. I had a summer special drink Mind Your Bees-ness. Do you have your choice of making it spicy sweet or sweet. The hibiscus liqueur gave the drink a certain je ne sais quoi. My husband had his go to,the Korean beef sandwich. I took one bite and understood why he always gets it. The combination of the perfectly spiced beef with pickled vegetables and Sriracha mayo is unspeakably tasty! I am looking forward to my next visit there! read more

The food was alright. It took our server 30 minutes to greet us and get us our drinks because she was too busy talking with her friends at another table. ... we had this place recommended to us and when we walked I thought I was going to get a decent lil burger and bar food. The burger I got was the tipsy burger and I'm fairly certain I got mote grease in that burger then I got water to drink. It lacked any and all flavor and listen I get that fat can equal flavor but it looks like the chef went oh sh*t and accidentally spilled a bottle of oil on my burger. My girlfriend got the burrito was "something between bad and meh". The service was actually probably worse. We ordered the pretzel appetizer it came out with the food. Our waitress never asked how the food it was. Never got us a refills of our drink and had us wait with barely touched food for 29 minutes (I'm unfortunately very sure of the time) before I eventually stopped her and just gave her my card so she could just run it. Listen I'm sorry I wasn't racking up 150$ alcohol tab like some of the other tables but that doesn't excuse poor service and worse food. I'm moving to Madison and will not be going back here. read more

I went here with friends before a show and none of us were super impressed. There are some vegetarian options, but I was disappointed that they didn't have a black bean patty or other vegetarian alternative for the sandwiches/burgers. I ended up getting the asparagus & egg sandwich and it was very bland and underwhelming. My friends and I also got the alligator bites to share, and they were nothing to write home about either. Our server was friendly and the restaurant had a pretty standard bar & grill-type vibe. I would be willing to try Tipsy Cow again in the future to see if other menu items might be better, but I'm not eager to go back any time soon. read more

The tipsy cow was recommended to us by local who said that this was a good place to go with friends. So we went. The goal was to enjoy some good burgers but also cheese curds since 3 of my friends (there were five of us) never tried cheese curds. When we walked in the waitress was kind enough to get us a seat at the table and give us menus. I think her name is Peyton. Looking at the appetizers, we were all excited for the cheese curds, but we also discovered fried pickles and I was in the mood for chicken wings so we ordered all of it. When the appetizers arrived, we all went for the cheese curds it was so good! Surprisingly, my friends have never tried deep-fried pickles. My one friend said he does not like pickles at all but after trying these deep fried pickles, they're his new favorite! Everybody loved them. During our appetizer feast, we finally put in our order for our burgers. Not too long after our burgers arrived with our fries, tator tots, and guess what else? More cheese curds! My burger was cooked perfectly medium rare, it was juicy and flavorful. Everything was delicious and our waitress did a fine job taking care of us. Solid bar in downtown Madison - my wife and I were exploring the area & decided to stop by for some beers. They have a good selection of beverages but I optioned for some Moon Man. Stopped by for lunch on a Friday. Wasn't too busy but it picked up by the time we left. We both got the fish fry, shared some curds and had some beers. They had a good selection for tap beers and the zombie dust hit the spot. The batter on the curds is lighter so they don't seem as heavy as others in the area. The perch fish fry was great but the cod was a little lacking in flavor. The rye bread, fries and slaw with it were good. In town looking around between events at the CrossFit Championships and trying to check out local spots. Stopped by this place and it's unfortunately our first impression in town. I don't know how to say I'm more disappointed. Between the fly in the beer sitting right on top and the server not bothering to notice while handing it to me, the margarita tasting like sour mix and water, or the server changing because her shift is over - yet still taking care of her other tables. Sandwiches were okay. Switched out the beer for one sans bugs. Still got charged for the first one. There was one other table in the bar while the bartender and a staff member were laid back. Feels like we would have benefited from a server who wasn't slammed with other tables. Vibe at the place was really nice. Enjoyed hanging out before we had to head back to the event center. Please don't make the customer feel impacted from a shift switch. We could've really ended up liking this place. read more

Service at first was not great. The hostess seemed like she did not want to be there and was unfriendly, grumpy, and unhelpful. It took about ten minutes for us to get seated, despite there being seats open and only one family ahead of us. When we were finally ready to order, nobody stopped by or table, despite multiple waitresses walking by, looking at us, and then moving on. After about twenty minutes of this, we asked a waitress walking by if she was our server, to which she responded "uh, i don't know." Well, that explains it. The hostess did not assign anyone to our table. Finally, after about five more minutes of waiting, someone comes by and takes our order. Our waitress was very helpful and nice, she apologized for the wait and took the appetizers off our tab. Food comes fairly quickly after that. Everything was hot, which was a good sign. We ordered the goat cheese curds and fried shrimp as appetizers, and both were awesome. Cheese curds were very smooth with a unique taste, and the shrimp was delicious. We all ordered different burgers, which were decent, but nothing special. The walleye burger was very generously portioned, but the batter on the walleye was too thick and slightly undercooked. We dropped in while touring Madison with our son. We started with their cauliflower appetizer, which was okay. For our lunches, we tried their Mushroom Sandwich and their Tipsy Burger. I thought the Tipsy Burger was pretty darn good. My wife liked her Mushroom sandwich. Service was solid, and the location was interesting. For drinks, we had a Cherry Mule and a Bourbon Cider. They had enough alcohol in them to make us happy we were walking back to our hotel. All in all, a good lunch. read more

I stopped in here recently while staying downtown and dined in the "patio" section. My server was clearly new, but he was very helpful without being overbearing. I ended up with the carnitas fries and the Korean BBQ sandwich. The sandwich, which was lightly "pressed" (think panini/Cuban sandwich--toasted on the outside) was very good. It could have benefited from a slightly healthier portion of pickled veg/kimchi, but the overall combo was quite good. As far as the carnitas fries go, the toppings steal the show. The fries were fine, but the slow cooked carnitas was very tasty. The overall dish could have benefited from just a touch more heat, but I also recognize that most Midwestern diners think anything beyond ketchup can be too spicy, so I understand why the spice was limited. My sister and I sat on the patio and waited over 20 minutes just to get water. The one waitress working outside completely ignored us after we asked for the check--we ended up having to go inside to the bar and pay ourselves. Meanwhile, at least four employees stood around inside doing nothing while people outside waited forever for basic service. We watched another couple who had been seated before us leave in frustration after being ignored for over 20 minutes--they weren't even offered water. Absolutely awful service: slow, disorganized, and completely unresponsive. Total shame because the food and drinks are delicious. Be better! read more

This was a pick for some old friends to get together for some drinks and lunch to start the weekend. The place is nice with a cool wooden bar in back and a triangular dining room up front with a great vibe. The big windows all around let the natural light in for a great ambience, I liked that. The place was packed for lunch which is a good sign so we sat at the bar until a table opened up for us. The menu is nice because it's nicely done with the classics and items you don't find on most menus like the lamb burger and the Pbr battered walleye along with specials. I love lamb so the lamb burger was what I was getting. Everyone ordered a different item which was cool because the menu had appealing items. The lamb burger is a lamb patty with a sunny side egg, Nueske's bacon, gruye're cheese, aioli and onion basically. The lamb burger was pretty good and tasty but I hated the bun that it was on because the crust was super crusty and left saw dust crumbs everywhere including in your mouth, we all kinda didn't like the buns and commented on them. The pretzel appetizer was also not liked by the group and not eaten because the comments were it's not fresh and was old compared to other places. I would definitely pick another place for my next visit with all the options that Madison has to offer because it didn't live up to the great experiences I have had around the square. read more

We were visiting Madison from out of state, so of course getting cheese curds was a priority for us. We were back on forth on between Old Fashioned and The Tipsy Cow before settling on the latter. Now I'm sure Old Fashioned is great, but WOW The Tipsy Cow has the best friend cheese curds I have ever tasted! We got the original as well as the goat cheese one, and we were in love with both. Came here for some cheese curds while visiting a friend. My friend said they're one of her favorite in the Madison area, and I would have to agree! We got that, alligator bites, and a salad. The salad portion size was HUGE which was great, the curds were a tad cold, but the alligator bites were PIPING hot. They were definitely crusted very thick, which was fine for us but could be less exciting for others, so up to your preference. If anyone orders a polarizing entree such as beets, they must really love beets or would never order it. And the beet salad here was more lettuce than beets. What a disappointment. I tried another appetizer that first visit and my friend and I both agreed everything was just arlight. Fried chicken salad is what I had the second time. My friend and I each got an adult beverage as it was a vacation day. All I remember is mine had a floral flavor in it, and for my tastes that made it a no-brainer to order. It was certainly tasty! We shared an order of truffle fries and they tasted great! Looked like nothing special, but we liked 'em a lot and they were enjoyed very quickly! I opted then for a salad for my main meal, and the portabella truffle salad caught my eye. Look....ya gurl likes mushrooms, mm'kay? Considering the assumed higher cost ingredients (portabellas and truffle stuff), the portion of the salad was generous. And it tasted pretty great! I recall service being a little frustrating (aka: slow). But we weren't in a rush so it wasn't the end of the world. Wow! I have been missing out! Tipsy cow was delicious! The place was packed but we were seated within 15 minutes. Our waiter was kind, attentive and offered recommendations. We started with the goat cheese curds (100% worth the extra couple dollars), these curds melt in your mouth.. they taste great and, of course, ranch is included. Very good! I would come back just for the goat curds. We also had the gyro fries- a generous portion smothered with gyro meat, feta, green onions, tomatoes and tzatziki sauce. Also amazing! For entrees, we got the tipsy cow burger (I requested without the bun), it was cooked well and very good. My friend had the steak sandwich and also enjoyed it. Our visit here started out well, with some solid 5/5 fried cheese curds, then fell off a cliff. Tispy Burger - 1/5 By the time this hit the table the bottom bun was already soaked through. In addition to not being rested, the burger was covered in sauce. Taste wasn't exactly great, either. GF didn't want more than a single bite, and I wasn't exactly compelled to finish it. Walleye - 1/5 Grew up eating walleye, came in hungry, and didn't want to finish this. Positively ruined the fish preparing it this way. Service - 1/5 Didn't get much attention from our server. After a long wait for our disappointing food, we indicated we weren't happy with the food and just wanted to pay and leave. Evidently, that wasn't enough of a clue for her to bring us our check without asking a second time. They also seated folks who came in off the street unmasked, and did not mask up when heading to their table. Can't recommend and won't return. read more
