    Corn "fritters"

I tried coming in here with a positive attitude despite them being owned by Sangrias (I do not like Sangrias, at all). But we came here with friends because they loved this place, it's going to be a while for me to trust them again for a food recommendation. Atmosphere: It is massive in here considering the location. Not a lot of parking since it is a shared lot. The floor was really dirty in here and the group I was with said the bathrooms were dirty as well. The decor is really pretty and it has a fun vibe. Service: Quick to seat us, get drinks and take orders. The reason this gets 2 stars. Drinks: The margaritas were super weak and not a lot of flavor other than overly sweet. Food: The salsa and chips are definitely something I won't be putting in my mouth again, it was like watery chunky ketchup? The tacos I was served were cold, I ordered the carniatas en salsa verde and the chipotle shrimp...the tortilla fell apart on both of them. And they were just..bland. No acidity, no spice. We also ordered the street corn fritters and they were SO dense, and mushy and not even close to the $10 they charged for them. There are so many better mexican/taco spots around here.....this is at the bottom of my list.

Staying in Appleton for a Packer game. Table side guac delicious. 4 different tacos all delicious. Chips and salsa kept coming. Yummy sangria (that got forgotten so kind waitress gave us on the house!)

    Frieda!

OMG! There was a group of us traveling from all over the country and had business in Appleton and came across this place as we talked about different food options. We made the right choice!!! The service was an among! We asked everyone from the hostess, to the water boy, and waitress what their favorite food was. All correct choices. The deco is perfectly done! Frieda everywhere! LOVE IT!!! Oh, the food was amazing also! I recommend like I have not recommend anywhere else as much as I do this place!!! You got to go!!!

Four of us went to the restaurant on a Saturday around the lunch hour. We were immediately impressed how spacious the bar and dining areas were. It was decorated in a fun style. The restaurant offers seating in booths or at tables. We started off with complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were fresh and crisp. The salsa was fantastic. When we got low on chips, our waitress was quick to bring us more. The restaurant has a nice drink menu. We ordered a couple of styles of margaritas and another tequila based drink. Everyone enjoyed their pick. For our meals, everyone ordered two tacos. You get your choice of handmade corn tortillas or ready made flour tortillas. We had some of both. Our orders came out promptly and were appropriately hot. I enjoyed my carnitas verde taco a lot. My chicken and mushroom taco was good but the chicken was a little dry. My dining partners like their choices, aside from the shrimp taco; which had very small shrimp versus two nice-sized shrimp. Overall, our group enjoyed the food and experience. The prices seemed in line and our service was great. We will definitely return in the future.

    Shrimp Boats

The ambience at this restaurant is really good, everything is decorated really fun! The restaurant/bar is actually a lot bigger than what it appears from the outside. The staff treated us well and were very attentive. I had the shrimp boats and they were very good. My only comment would be that this is more of an appetizer than a meal. On the menu it is actually listed as a meal. I think it would be a good shareable appetizer for a party of 2 to 3. I will go back.

I stumbled upon this place by accident. The ambience was vibrant, and the food was both delicious and quite authentic. It took a bit of time to place our order, likely because we arrived at an off-peak time, but once we ordered, the food came out quickly.

Margarita flight and guacamole made at the table.

This place is enormous! It doesn't seem like it from the outside but this place has a great amount of seating and airspace and provides such a great experience with tons of art pieces and fun furniture. Their food was excellent. The margarita flight was delightful and the guacamole made fresh at the table to die for! The tacos were also delightful and I highly recommend the chipotle shrimp and Jamaican jerk tacos!

Birria taco with red & green hot sauce

Friendly service and clean establishment. Jalapeño margarita was delish! Baked chicken enchilada dip appetizer was good, but even better with the hot homemade avocado cream sauce! Tacos were very flavorful. Disappointed in the salsa & chips offered - chips were very thick and salsa was very soupy with not much flavor.

We arrived around 4:30 pm on a Wednesday and were seated immediately for the two of us, which was lovely. I started with a filthy martini (one part vodka, one part olive juice)... and they nailed it. Exactly what I asked for. My mom ordered a whiskey old fashioned press, which she enjoyed. For appetizers, we ordered the French onion soup, deep-fried mozzarella, and bacon-wrapped scallops. My mom also had the soup of the day, which was a turkey pot pie soup. Everything was very good overall. One small note on the scallops, and this is important for context: I personally have a strong aversion to seafood, and my mom is usually careful not to order seafood around me because even the smell can make me nauseous. However, scallops are usually an exception, as they don't tend to have a strong seafood odor. In this case, there was no unpleasant smell at all, which I appreciated. That said, the scallops themselves appeared under-seared and very pale, and the bacon was undercooked. Not raw, just soft and not crispy. My mom agreed it could have used a few more minutes. A minor miss, but worth mentioning. For my entrée, I ordered the French dip, which came with carrots... and honestly, the carrots deserve their own moment. They were tiny, perfectly cooked, beautifully seasoned, buttery, and balanced with just the right amount of sweet and salty. I love carrots, and these were exceptional. Highly recommend. My mom ordered a Wednesday special trio, which included barbecue ribs, pineapple glazed ham, and a turkey dinner with stuffing, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce. I'll note that the ham itself was delicious, but the pineapple glaze wasn't quite for me personally, as it leaned a bit too tangy for my taste. That said, the turkey was phenomenal. I had a bite, and it was moist, flavorful, and absolutely something I'll come back for. The mashed potatoes and gravy were excellent. I love stuffing, but this one wasn't my favorite; it tasted slightly sour or underdone to me, though that could simply be a preference thing. I'd still order the turkey dinner again without hesitation. Because it was my birthday, our server Jenny surprised me with a slice of chocolate cake, which was incredibly sweet and thoughtful. I was very full... but yes, I ate the cake, and it was delicious. We also split a Pink Squirrel for dessert, which was rich, nostalgic, and the perfect way to end the meal. Service was excellent throughout the evening. Jenny was warm, attentive, and paced everything perfectly. Food came out efficiently without overwhelming the table. The hostess was also welcoming and kind. The dining room was clean, comfortable, and nicely decorated. The lighting was just right, not too dark. We also arrived at a great time, because shortly after our entrées came out, the restaurant quickly filled up. One small suggestion: the website mentions half-price apps and drink discounts, but it isn't clear that those specials are bar-area only. Not a huge issue for us, but clearer wording online would help manage expectations, especially for guests who can't sit at high bar seating. Overall, this was a really special dinner, especially after years of hearing about the Red Ox and never going. More positives than negatives by far. Final rating: 8.5 / 10 We'll absolutely be back... especially for the turkey dinner and those carrots.

As an avid Yelper, I looked it up and wasn't too impressed with the photos, but I decided to trust a local's choice. We took the 10-minute walk from our Airbnb, and when we arrived, I was shocked to see how big the restaurant was. It was bustling on a Saturday morning, but we were seated quickly. Immediately, I noticed a warm and friendly family-focused atmosphere. Our waitress was kind and quick. She brought us the menus, got our drink order, and gave us time to look through everything. Since this was our first time in Wisconsin, we got an order of cheese curds and a breakfast skillet each. We easily could've shared one breakfast skillet, but they were both so delicious, and I'm glad we got our own. The cheese curds were phenomenal, even though we ordered them as an appetizer. They came out at the same time our meals did. I enjoyed our time at Black Bear and I'm even considering going back again as I write this review. A great spot for newbies in town and definitely worth checking out.

As is my custom, I give this place 5 stars because it is a perfect avatar of its genre. Being here is like the emotional equivalent of falling into a vat of macaroni and cheese. The bar area is spacious to wait either at the bar or in some small lower tables. We came for the salad bar and were a bit underwhelmed. It says Fridays have a limited salad bar and if you asked me what that looked like tonight's is what I'd say. Lettuce, a few standard veggie toppings, your usual dressings, croutons. Missing things like pickles, carrots, corn or peas, three bean salad, cottage cheese. But it was all fresh and crisp and had the most important things for a supper club: cheese and liver spreads with crackers and hot bacon dressing. They also have two soups nightly, lasagna (flavorful and not sweet like some places) and ham and potato (perfectly thickened but not like glue and not too salty). I love that they have perch every night. I was a bit skeptical on all the combos being with tenderloin because I don't like that cut but it was tender yet not mush, perfectly charred and crusty outside but a spot-on medium rare almost to the rare side. Seasoned well and made me a believer in tenderloin. The perch was some of the best I've ever had. Large. Moist fillets and cooked to perfection so it was crispy cracker crumb outside but moist and flaky inside. The broasted chicken was crispy and juicy but a bit salty for my taste. Potato puffs were a fun take on potato sides and well seasoned. Ambiance is what you'd expect, dark wood and "homey" ambiance. Waitresses are fairly attentive and get the job done. It's also absurdly affordable, we paid more for a burger lunch earlier that day and here we even had leftovers.
