To start the chips and salsa are extremely flavorful. Not only does it come with a great medium tasting fresh salsa but it's accompanied with a delicious bean dip. I ordered 4 tacos, 2 quesabirria style and 1 each al pastor and steak, both American style plus cilantro on a corn grilled tortilla. All 4 were dynamite, especially the quesabirria style. I would recommend the Al pastor over the steak as that meat had a lot more flavor. What really set the whole meal over the edge and made it top notch was the homemade hot sauces, both green and red. I couldn't decide which I liked more as they were both delicious and right amount of spice. To top it all off, service was outstanding, even on a quick lunch stop in. My husband and I dined in one week and ordered delivery the next week. Both times, the food arrived fresh, hot, and beautifully presented. Despite what another had said about the 'sad state of the shrubbery', the inside is spacious and well-maintained. The ambience of the interior absolutely makes up for the perhaps less-than-stellar exterior. Our server was professional and prompt. The chips were served with a bean dip and salsa (both quite good). Menu had plenty of options, most $12-24 on average (with some upwards of $40). We came during happy hour and the house margaritas were at par with expectations. I ordered the cherry pork tacos and my lady ordered the chimichangas (con pastor). WOW, those cherry pork tacos were divine. Portion sizes were fantastic. The $/plate was reasonable to me. This was my third time here, first two times were okay, this time was absolutely awful. We ordered the cheese dip, it was supposed to have spices, jalapeños and pick, it was just watery cheese dip. For the entree we ordered the flaming cheese fajita for two. It was supposed to have steak and chicken. There was barely enough meat for 2 fajitas. It was 99% onions and peppers. For $26.99 you'd think there would be enough meat for at least one person. We watched the manager walk from table to table to ask how everything was and he didn't even make eye contact with us, much less stop at our table. I've gone to El Agave a few different times and have been happy with the food each time! Very quick service, delicious food, and they always get my order right! My 4-star review comes with a minor setback including their takeout orders. They seem to be very unorganized with takeout orders. I called on a Friday evening to place an orderr for the upcoming Sunday. When I went to pick up my order, they said it had been written down on a piece of paper and then lost. They had to remake my entire order of 8+ dishes, and we didn't get them until over and hour later, and by that time our meeting was done. The manager was very apologetic and delivered the meal to us and offered a discount, but didn't take away from the fact this happened. Would I go back? Absolutely. Will I be placing another to-go order? Ehhh probably not. read more

It seems as though Appleton has yet another great Mexican restaurant! Friendly faces, cold beer, and fresh chips and salsa await you upon being seated. One of my favorite dishes is Chile Colorado and this place did not disappoint. Tender chunks of beef lathered in a slightly spicy red sauce, complemented with sides of arroz y frijoles. Delicious! They have a white salsa that is somewhat reminiscent of ranch, while being entirely different. It is hard to explain, but the flavor is fresh and new and very addicting. Come for this sauce alone! The Nachos de Mesa are really tasty and a meal in themselves. Chicken, Beef and Beans combined with a tangy white cheese sauce, sour cream lettuce and tomatoes all conbine for that perfect tex-mex bite. Their burritos are large and the fillings well seasoned. Not too spicy, but full of flavor. The Enchiladas Swisas - chicken with green chili sauce have than nice fresh bite a well prepared green sauce can bring. One of my and my wife's favorites is the Chori Pollo - thinly sliced chicken breast seasoned and saute'd with Mexican spices bring a smoky chili flavor to the dish. Combined with fresh chorizo and a decadent white cheese sauce, rice and beans - brings it to a fantastic medley of flavors that is really quite savory and delicious. This is the 2nd time we've eaten at El Gave since opening. First time was great! This time was not. We got there about 11:35 today. I didn't get our server's name, but she had long,red hair in a pony tail. Took awhile to get drinks. Had to ask for silverware, salsa, etc right off the bat...hadn't even ordered yet. And, it took quite awhile for her to take the order. In short, there were people who got there after us and paid before we got our food. They weren't that busy. It was probably about 12:25 before we got our food. Our food sat in the window for quite awhile. The server looked at it and walked by it several times. I couldn't get her attention...she wouldn't look at our table or check on us. A manger and another server finally brought over our food. Had to ask for shells for fajitas and didn't get refills on drinks or chips/salsa once we got our food. Food tasted good, but it wasn't warm. Didn't complain because I needed to get on the road back to MN. Not happy with our experience, but I will probably give them another chance in the future. I asked for a refill but was told they were brewing a new batch and it would be about 10 minutes. really, for $3.29 a glass I got the last of the tea brewed when?, seeing this was so early. This place had some promise to it. It kind of looks a Johnny Rockets on the outside. The inside feels empty and bare. Don't come here in the winter, it's just about as cold on the inside as it is outside. Jacket stayed on the whole time and my fingers froze. The food was half decent, the main part of the dish not the rice, that was flavorless with corn/peas and green beans. We ordered guacamole and asked if they made it, he said yes. It came to the table not a moment later. Due to the temperature inside the guacamole was cold and felt slimy in the mouth. It wasn't pleasant. Salsa was fine. I don't know what was going threw their minds but there was a lime with one of our dishes. It was cut so stupid...it just bothers me so much. The way it was cut meant everyone got uneven chunks of lime. The only thing that made me give them three stars was one of the guys came out and chased the car down to give us a credit card, sadly the card wasn't ours. Im not an expert by any means in Mexican food, nor typically a fan, but tonight for some reason I was craving it. We went to El Agave and it was a great experience. Our waiter, who's name I don't recall, was extremely nice and patient with us. The chips came out warm and the salsa was yummy. We both got enchiladas and they were pretty good, only complaint is I'm use to a little bit more spice on mine, however it was still worth ordering a second time if we choose to come back in the future! Very ample fillings and cheese. My sister had flautas, and her plate looked a little bare when it came out with only three rolled up flautas on it...some beans or rice would have looked Much nicer on the plate. Both dishes were filled with flavor, and i would recommend both. The homemade chips and salsa were also tasty. The salsa was mild, and the chips were nice and crisp without excess grease. Everyone that came in after us was eating. We asked the server twice to check on our food. My lunch combo was cold, wasn't what I ordered, and was beef instead of chicken. When El Agave first opened, they took the a 4 star lead in the Tex-Mex category in the area. Service was attentive and prompt, chips were crisp, salsa was fresh with a nice consistency and well-seasoned, and hot bean dip was a nice extra. Margaritas were good and the menu had unique variations of classics. We've now been there 6 times and the last 3 times things had gone downhill across the board. Pina coladas were flavorless and had no sign of rum, salsa was bland, and a taco salad was a rim of taco shell with a filling primarily consisting of very wet refried beans that had caused the rest of the shell to fully disintegrate. It was not eaten, but we did not send it back, nor did the waitress ask about it when she clearly saw that it had been pushed aside. Tamales were still good. Some waitstaff seem to have difficulties either reading the checks or making change (brought back tax amount instead of $18+ correct change). For now I'm giving them 2 stars due to recent experiences. read more

This is an excellent Mexican restaurant. The location is near the mall but not in the crazy traffic area. It's a little off the beaten path, but it's worth finding! The food and service are both excellent. Others have mentioned the white salsa, which I agree is very good. I found that the flavor of traditional dishes like burritos and tacos were definitely a step above the rest. We were pleasantly surprised at the quality. The service is fast and very friendly. This location has not proved to be very good for the other restaurants that have occupied this building, but El Agave is worth coming a little out of your way for! read more
