Back in Rochester for a weekend visit with friends. Had to get in some breakfast, of course. Started with catfish, eggs, grits, and house potatoes at a nearby restaurant. I liked the service. I loved the food. Having greatly reduced the amount of salt I add to my cooking, I noticed a heavy hand in the catfish batter and in the potatoes. Since I had one more day left in Rochester and The Toast Factory was close to my hotel, I stopped in again for chicken and waffle. This scored 100 out of 10. Food, phenomenal. We all got french toast, different flavors, the two favorites were apple and yam. I could eat the french toast w yams every meal for a month. We also got chicken wings, crispy juicy and delicious. Definitely need to come back and get more things like grits and biscuits. Coming right at opening (11:00am), doors were still locked at 11:03am. Luckily, a kind-looking woman came and unlocked them, gave us menus while she returned to putting down the chairs off the dining tables. We ordered a couple of jumbo fried chicken wings, The Geechie, Waffles w. Strawberries & Cream, and Steak, Egg & Cheese sandwich. The wings were cooked perfectly, crispy and incredibly moist on the inside. We both thought these were a tad on the salty side, but overall great wings and well worth the $3.75/per wing price. The Geechie was a bit of a letdown. The 3 pieces of toast with cheese in between wasn't anything special, and the steak I found tough and even by "breakfast steak" standards, these tasted on the lower end quality. Also found this to be a tad on the saltier side. This rang in at $26 which was steep. The Waffles w. Strawberries & Cream were pretty standard. We enjoyed the topping more than the waffle itself as it tasted pretty plain with no distinguishable flavors. For the Steak, Egg & Cheese sandwich, the steak was also tough but everything else was fine. On a side note, we saw a sign for specials which one of them was for crab cakes. A single one sets you back $15, which I find very steep for a crab cake compared to how much fine dining restaurants would normally charge you for this item. Overall, not a bad experience. Stopped in on a Sunday morning. This was a cute find. Very clean dining room and restroom. The one item I ordered they no longer serve and haven't had a chance to remove from the menu. We waited over 45 minutes for our two sandwiches. I finally went back in line to make sure ours wasn't missed since multiple guests that sat after us were served. My bf and I are visiting Rochester and we came here on 05/13/26. This place has the best breakfast. So you go up and grab a menu, then sit down, then go back up to order your food. It only takes about 10 minutes for your food to be ready. My bf and I got breakfast combos. Great food, but the pricing practices were disappointing and affected the overall experience. I ordered one item clearly marked on the menu at $16 and was charged $17.50. Another item listed at $10.50 rang up at $11. When I brought this to the staff's attention, I was dismissed with, "The menu prices change every day. It's inflation." I understand rising costs. What I do not accept is being charged more than what is clearly posted without notice or explanation. If prices change, the menu should be updated accordingly. Customers should not have to catch discrepancies on their receipts to avoid being overcharged. It turned what could have been an otherwise acceptable experience into a frustrating one. I absolutely love the concept- what's not to love? Enticing french toast flavors, grits, delicious bacon and more. However, it's an order at the counter place but when you arrive, you're greeted and told approximately how long a wait until you are seated and told, you're number 3, etc. No list of names, no pagers, just the memory of the person greeting and seating, which led to some confusion. We then waited in the longish line to order food. My friend and I each ordered the same French toast combo - banana cream with bacon and eggs. Drink options are limited to bottled juices and sodas and coffee. At 11:30 AM on a Sunday, they were out of hot chocolate. We ordered and went back to our seats. The only utensils were prepackaged plastic sets even though the mugs and plates were ceramic. There is no table service at all. You listen for your name to be called out over the cacophony of sounds in the industrial dining room. It's easy to miss your name, especially if you're hard of hearing. Again , a pager or table service could have prevented that. Despite having ordered at the same time, my friend got her food a good 10 + minutes before me. When I asked about the status of my meal, they indicated it was almost ready and called out a mispronounced version of my name and directed me to walk back through the line yo retrieve my food. The French toast was delicious, but I had no bananas on my banana cream french toast which I didn't notice at first because of the generous banana cream and whipped cream. On the way out, I let them know that the meal was delicious but mine lacked the bananas. No apology, but I was asked if I wanted bananas to go. I did not. Multiple issues with my meal. The only coffee creamer available is coffee mate. They do not have any other milk or cream/1/2 and 1/2 available. It's a breakfast spot! They need to do better. The place was freezing cold. All the employees were wearing long sleeves under their t-shirts. Hard to enjoy a cozy warm breakfast on a chilly fall day when you are cold. While no one wants their breakfast to sit under heat lamps however it's better than getting cold food. We visited during a very busy breakfast rush and unfortunately had a disappointing experience. There is no hostess, no clear seating system, and very little communication. When it's crowded, it's essentially up to customers to figure things out on their own. We originally planned to eat in but couldn't find any available seating, so we placed a to-go order at 12:15 PM. While ordering, the cashier was short and unwelcoming. I observed her snapping at customers ahead of me, and when I politely spoke to her, the interaction felt unprofessional and uncomfortable. After ordering, we were told to wait near the entrance for our name to be called, but there was no buzzer, no updates, and no way to track order progress. After more than 30 minutes, we noticed customers who ordered after us receiving their food. When I asked if there was an estimated timeframe, I was told they couldn't check, even after I showed my receipt with the 12:15 order time. I also didn't receive my coffee until I asked about it. I later asked another staff member for assistance and mentioned the interaction at the register. The response felt defensive rather than helpful, which was disappointing. The name definitely captures what this eatery is about. I was "in the neighborhood " & had been fasting for some lab work I needed. Having finished that task I was very hungry and so searched for a place nearby. It was bustling with people and lots of plates of thick, golden French toast accompanied by an array of strawberries & whipped cream on some, crispy fried chicken wings on others, bacon, sausage, and more. I debated and then chose the "Original" which the board said came with cinnamon sugar & confectioners sugared on top of the serving of three slices of the French toast. I added a side of three slices of bacon - asking for it to be cooked extra crispy. I got a card with a number and went and sat down and waited. And waited. There weren't many available seats left so I was fortunate to get a table mid Saturday morning. When my number was called I went to the counter and got my tray with my food plated on a chic matte black china plate. The first thing I noticed was that there was barely an eight of a teaspoon of confectioners (or otherwise known as powdered) sugar on my toast. Stingy on a fairly inexpensive ingredient. Oh well. The toast was perfectly browned and custard was cooked just right. Not enough cinnamon to taste it. My three slices of bacon were not full length slices - more like 2 thirds. The crisp was just slightly crisp. The flavor was good. It was a decent meal and actually the perfect meal to have after a fast. We had to get going and I asked if we could just get our order without the pork chop. The woman at the front told us we had to wait because it was still on the grill and they refuse to give the rest of it to us. One nifty and different detail about this place: it's self serve. That means you can sit at your table if you want. You can even sit for hours and days! But when you're ready to order something, you walk over to the point-of-sale system near the counter to order. This we did. Take note: there are table menus but also a wall menu. They are a self serve cafe One of us got the vanilla sensation. One of us got the chicken wings atop. One of us got the original, but with a sausage for added heft. The coffee arrived in hefty black mugs. Notice the steam arising. Arise, steam! Also, notice the heft of the mug. Heave, heft! Soon thereafter, the food arrived. With the trusty real maple syrup hidden away in a pocket-within-a-pocket-within-a-pocket, the French toasts served admirably, and took their place beside their fathers, in whose mighty company they will certainly not be ashamed. The regular, with an alchemist's bottle of (not real) pancake syrup in the background. The sausage, in all its heft. As can be seen from the photo, the sausage was the quintessence of heft. It was spicy. It was tasty. It was not like any other sausage at any of the other breakfast places we have been to! The chicken wing variant of the French toast came with delicious yams atop. Yams, also known as sweet potatoes, are actually, apparently, quite a common thing to put atop French toast, and now we know that this is for good reason! New York Matinee called this a "playful, but mysterious little dish"; you'll love it. The food was delicious, appropriately apportioned, and was sufficiently filling, as breakfast should be.
