Was told not to worry about a $7 toll and that I did all the appropriate actions and everything was crystal clear... then I get this.

I called to put my card on file, and the clerk said our tickets would be paid without penalty within 5 days. Two months later, we get a letter charging $210 in penalties for unpaid tickets. Absolute scum of the earth to break their word like that. This place is pure robbery, they hang up on you and make the whole process to pay a $7 toll absolute hell. Appeal. Appeal. Appeal. This is legal robbery and an abhorrent, disgusting use of indirect taxpayer contributions.

Careful to review everything. You are entitled to have Driver's rights don't sign them away.

Don't sign anything with The Toll Roads unless you have an attorney read it, know your driver's rights. Make sure you collect the operator's employee number -write down the day and time of the call recorded. 1. They Are a Government-Contracted Entity The Toll Roads (managed by the Transportation Corridor Agencies, not DMV) are allowed by statute to report delinquent accounts to the DMV. The DMV then places a registration hold (also called a "VLT Stop"). Reference: California Vehicle Code § 4760 - 4765 2. The DMV Doesn't Investigate the Validity of Toll Holds The DMV does not independently verify whether a settlement was made or if the dispute is fair. If The Toll Roads tells the DMV "do not lift the hold," the DMV will comply--even if it's abusive or in error. What Makes This Dangerous: This gives The Toll Roads disproportionate power to coerce payment by holding your vehicle hostage. It's not legal leverage above the DMV, but functional control within DMV systems. Key Legal Statement You Can Use: "The DMV hold is being used coercively after confirmed partial settlement and written delivery of terms, which may constitute bad faith enforcement and breach of consumer protections under California contract and toll administration law."

They charge you for using the roads even when you do not enter the main toll road freeways. When I was lost after missing the MacArthur Road from Jamboree Road in Irvine, I accidentally entered the side lane that leads into the main 73 freeway, but I exited before the main freeway began and exited via the off-ramp station on my way to the Newport Beach Public Library. They charge you fines for not having a transponder, even though I heard the beep and saw the red light go off from the transponder I had on the car. They refuse to remove charges and fines (I had the transponder which did beep, which is how they found me in the first place) when I was literally lost and did not even enter the main 73 freeway at all. So, I did not use the 73 toll road, yet I have a massive fine, and all the representatives yell at you and tell me it's not their problem and that I don't have a transponder. The photo below is the transponder from the toyota that I had to take a picture of since that was the main reason for the fine. That they didn't accept by the way. OMG

Helped with my misunderstanding of tolls and fees. I have an account now for all CA and NW Texas tolls. Wow!

Ask the Community - The Toll Roads

Can Toll Roads legally charge you a toll for a car that you no longer own?

You were being charged for a toll because you were listed as the registered owner of the car at the time of the toll. All you would have to do is provide sufficient proof that you no longer owned the vehicle at the time of the toll and they would be… Read more

Has anyone else experienced any invalid charges with the new sticker transponders? In my case it was a $26.00 charge (invalid), at 3:29 am, on a toll bridge over 150 miles from my home, against one of the stickers I had not mounted.

You were charged for tolls that were picked up on a sticker transponder that was still linked to your account. It's always a good idea to make sure that all of your account information is always up to date, including deactivating any transponders… Read more

Anyone ever have to return a transponder? Have tried asking The Toll Roads site, with no response (big surprise). Will probably end up calling, but try to avoid them at all costs. Appreciate feedback if anyone has answer. Thanks

Yes I have. It was pretty easy. You go into their corporate offices in Irvine, to the left is their office you introduce yourself tell them that you need to return the transponder they will look up your account document that it's returned, to… Read more

I normally don't have any need to use the toll roads but I decided to go to black star canyon for a hike. I have personal license plates and the website doesn't recognize them. I even tried to get an account and it still won't recognize them?

Same here. If you put in a plate they can't handle you can click 'continue anyway' and they allow you to enter your CC info, but they never tell you how much it will cost, and you never get charged. Their system is totally whacked.
