It's a beautiful day for a train ride.
    Mike M.

Of course this place is clean and orderly - it's Irvine after all and anything else would get you fined, shamed, and compared to Anaheim. But it's a really welcome change to most train stops in the northeast (Baltimore? Newark?). Spotless bathrooms, working vending machines, great lighting, good signage, and an easy pick up spot for your ride into the rest of OC.

I've only been to this station twice. Once a couple years ago when I took a miserable train ride from Irvine to San Diego and back and vowed never to ride the train again (I haven't) and again recently when I picked up friends an hour later than their scheduled arrival time due to someone having a drug overdose on the train. Ah, the joy of public transportation! That hour of waiting gave me a lot of time to explore every nook and cranny of this station. Plenty of parking in the adjacent structure. The indoor waiting area has a staffed (at least while I was there) security counter, a staffed ticketing window, a couple of vending machines for drinks and snacks, television, ATM, charging station and an adequate amount of seating. Floors seemed rather dirty as did some of the chairs. Outside there are a few benches and tables, ticketing machines and several pay phones, a rare sight indeed. There are also restrooms for both men and women. The woman at the customer service window was pleasant and gave me accurate information regarding the delay. Seems like an average station with easy access that will provide the basic needs of a passenger.

Very clean and easy to navigate train station in Irvine. We took a business class ride on Amtrak from Union Station towards San Diego one weekend. We got off at the Irvine station, as our friend whose job was across the street would drive the rest of the way. Once you get off the train, all you see is farmland on one side and a parking garage the other direction. It really feels like you're in the middle of nowhere. There are plenty of benches and some grass areas as well. Santa Ana was the prior stop to this station and Irvine was the tidier one of the 2. There is a loop where people are dropped off so pay in mind that is a one way lane. It's very quiet and it being in Irvine, seemed very safe. The only negative I saw was the bridge over the tracks to get to the other side. So if your train is north bound you will have to walk up 3 flights of stairs or take the elevator to get to the walkbridge. Plenty of parking.

This is one busy area when people get off of work! They have a separate lane that conveniently loops around for those dropping off passengers. They have a couple of fast food options at this station. The bridge over to the other side of the tracks is a couple of flight of stairs. If you have leg issues or a lot of luggage with you, take the elevator. There's a parking structure with ample parking spots at this station.

+ New parking structure + FREE parking! + Safe w/security patrolling the area + Large parking spots + Ample parking I park here nearly every weekday for my Metrolink ride to LA Union Station. The station is new, clean, and has ample parking for motorcycles, bicycles, and of course cars. In fact, I have never seen the parking deck fill up more than the first 2 levels (and I believe there are 4). The Amtrak train also uses this station. Some of the business within the station aren't open early, which could disappoint some travelers who take the 6:03am Metrolink or earlier. There's coffee, breakfast, etc available if you come a little later (usually after 6:30am). For the past month or so, the 7-day Metrolink pass wasn't functioning correctly and would not activate the TAP card sensors in Los Angeles. I would regularly have to get issued another card once I got to Union Station. Those extra few minutes means missing the subway and having to wait for another. Not a huge deal, but when your morning commute is almost 2 hours, every minute matter. The Metrolink ticket machines also sometimes don't work correctly. In those cases, make sure you take a photo of the error so you can present it in the rare chance you get asked for your ticket. You want to avoid that hefty fine. I like the fact that security is present at the Irvine station. They must be monitoring the cameras regularly since I started to change a flat tire and within minutes, someone came to check up on me. However, once I had my car damaged by someone cutting a corner too close. I talked to security, but I was told unless I had the exact date/time, it was hard for them to find anything. I chalk it up to laziness since it was the day before, but whatever. I have insurance for a reason.

Super clean train station, not like Philly at all. What else can I say besides riduculously clean?

The 3 story climb to the bridge that takes you to the other side of the tracks.

This is a pretty nice station. There's a structure with four levels of covered parking. All free parking! I know that's not a major deal in the OC, but there are stations in LA that require payment. There's also parking on the ground level outside of the structure if you don't care about leaving your car in the sun. There are two metrolink/amtrak automated ticket machines at the station, which are pretty easy to use. They are pretty temperamental though sometimes and can stop working at a moment's notice. The ones at tustin seem to always be broken but so far I haven't had any problem with the irvine machines. The lounge area is pretty nice too. There's plenty of seating while you wait for your train. The station also has a number of stores and restaurants. There's a donut shop and a little cafe called Strawberry Cafe. This entire station has everything to make you feel comfortable while you wait for your train. One thing I don't like about this station is if you're traveling north, you have to cross the tracks. And to get there, you have to climb 3 flights of stairs, then go over the overpass, then go down a bunch of stairs. If you're a lazy, fat a$$ like me, you will hate the 45 seconds it will take for you to get to the other side. Damn you irvine station! I try my best to not do any physical activity in a day but you force me to do some exercise every morning! There's also an elevator going up and down but if you're running to catch your train, you're better off hauling a$$ up and down the stairs than wait for the elevator.

Can you take a medium size piece of luggage on the train with you and where do they put it?

If you are talking about Amtrak they will put it in the luggage room onboard if you are taking MetroLink then you can keep it beside you at all times

Instead of making the interaction feel transactional, she brought such a high level of courtesy and kindness that it turned into a genuinely great experience. You're near the friggin' airport! True, but the Spectrum area gets all the attention. They have the train station, they have the cool shopping area. Sure, we're close to south coast, and we have all those nifty protected right turns here, but public transportation from outside of Irvine kind of sucks for those of us that work or are starting to live here. Plus, we don't have things like those Grade 1 bike trails that are available to the spectrumites (i.e. San Diego Creek). Not no more. Irvine recently got fundage from OCTA to start this nifty little shuttle service that runs on 3 routes: the A - Route going from Tustin Metrolink to John Wayne the B - Route going from Tustin Metrolink to Jamboree/Michelson (Pacific Park Shopping Center) the C - Route which runs around the heart of the IBC in a circle like a 5 year old manchild on a couple of pixie sticks. So, it doesn't go EVERYwhere, but it can get you close enough to where you're going if you're a commuter (like moi) who's trying to drive less. Since it's a new service, everything is... well, new. The shuttles are nice and clean. They look like those "special" school buses, the type that almost look like they would do well in a "Mad Max" futuristic world with spikes and what not. I think the Bike Rack at the front really helps with that image. Oh yeah, they have bike racks, so you can pedal your way from your stop to your work/play area if you so desire. Really useful for those that pedal their way to Metrolink too. All in all, I like it. Right now, rides are free until Sept 1st 2008. Afterwards, the fee to ride breaks down like this: $1.00 Boarding During Peak Period (5:30a - 9:30a and 3:30p - 7:30p on Weekdays) $.50 Boarding During Off-Peak Period (9:30a - 3:30p Weekdays & All Day Saturday and Sunday) FREE Riders Presenting Valid Metrolink Pass/ Ticket for Rider Connecting to and from Tustin Metrolink Station Only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars? Limited run times (along with the limited train service Metrolink provides). I'd like to see more service (but that also goes with my want to see more trains). However, for a start, it's not bad =)
