Dr. Davis at Training Room ATX is the real deal. First off, he's just a great dude. Blunt in the best way, funny, optimistic, and clearly someone who cares deeply about doing things the right way. You can tell he comes from a military background, not because he's rigid, but because his intent is always about getting the job done with high standards and real purpose. I've been going to him for a couple of years now. I'm 38, play men's league baseball, and I'm definitely not in the best shape of my life. Still, Dr. Davis has made it possible for me to keep playing, stay on the field, and actually contribute to my team's success. More than once, he's done something in a session that made me stop and think, "Whoa... I can actually do that better than I thought." What really sets him apart is his practicality. I have a home gym, sent him a picture of it, and he completely nailed a customized workout plan around my nagging injuries: no extreme stuff, no gimmicks, just clever, realistic, practical work. I tend to play like I forget I'm 38, and he helps keep me honest and functional. He's incredibly knowledgeable, has a great sense of humor, and as a teacher who's on his feet and mentally drained all day, I genuinely look forward to my sessions with him. That says a lot. Frustrating business practices: You will be charged $75 for missed appointment regardless of excuse. I have never seen a medical office with such a strict policy. I understand the frustration and loss of production with no shows and desire to train patients (practice doesn't want patients who no show), however things happen and a one-time exception is not given here. read more

Came in because I'm marathon training and saw that Phil Davis has experience and knowledge on running. I try to find PT's who are runners and know runners very well, as I find that makes a big difference in how they understand both my pains and my training. So I chose him specially because of his bio. To my annoyance, I didn't actually get to be seen by him, just an intern. I don't want to trash the intern - she was great and very kind. But I would have been almost just as displeased had I seen anyone who I didn't specifically seek out to treat me. Plus she just had to keep running out to ask him questions and relay every part of our conversation, without me ever getting to see him (which took a lot of time away from the one hour appointment, so we ran out of time at the end of the evaluation for any actual treatment/work). I have a feeling this is a unique experience and I'm sure there is potential for this place to be fine, but was not impressed by level of effort put into patient care here, nor the personalization. TL;DR I had to pay $150 for an intern to tell me to "try running less and see if the pain decreases". read more

What an awesome place. Came here for PT after getting ankle surgery. Right away, they test you on your capabilities and write out a plan for you. After every session, you are given a list of workouts to do on your own. They even email you with diagrams/pictures on how to do the workouts just in case you forget. Everything they do is ingrained in the sports world. I told them exactly what my goals where and they were there right by my side the entire process. Culminating in me playing in my Sand Volleyball League 6 months after surgery. Highly recommend this place for anyone located near downtown. One side note. They have an automatic charge of $5 on your first visit for stim pads which I assume is because most of the clients get stim treatment. I never got the stim treatment for the 3 months I was there so not sure if that policy should be changed or not. read more

The Training Room has fixed multiple injuries of mine over the last 7 months (broken scapula, fractured heel, etc) and I couldn't be a happier client. They focus on getting you rehabbed as quick as possible vs make you a lifetime client like many other PTs. I hope I don't wind up a patient again anytime soon, but I know that if I do Phil, Blaze, and team will get me back in the game faster than any other firm - can't recommend them highly enough read more

The Training Room is the greatest physical therapy clinic I've ever experienced. One year ago I had just about given up on my back, I had seen 5 surgeons, was getting shots in my vertebrae ever 3 months and was moments away from a highly invasive surgery that would have fused my spine. Dr. Vilas is the best. I started seeing her in 2019 for an injury I received to my upper-back and neck a few years ago. I had been to another Physical Therapy clinic for this same injury; there, I saw the actual Provider once, and was treated by a Physical Therapy Tech for the remainder of my time and never saw the Provider again. At The Training Room, Dr. Vilas was present and lead every treatment, and if she was not available, Blaze, the Physical Therapy Assistant was just as helpful. They worked with my ever-changing schedule and had availability early morning and evenings. The Providers and staff truly care about your well being and recovery. read more

The Training Room has a friendly staff and all the equipment you need. I had a bulging disk in my lower lumbar that was causing me immense pain to the point where I could barely walk and no position was comfortable for me, even laying down. They squeezed me in at the last minute and by the time our session was through, I could walk again. The pain hasn't come back since March. I can't recommend Blaze highly enough for fixing my back and saving my life! read more

My boyfriend saw Dr. Davis a few years back and had rave reviews. I was seeing another PT but my back was getting worse so I decided to give Dr. Davis a shot - and I'm so glad I did!! He is supportive and patient, exactly what I needed because I'm the worst kind of patient that can't wait to get back to running or otherwise exercising. He gets you back to speed quickly and isn't afraid to let you jump back into running, etc. ASAP. He is extremely knowledgeable and knew exactly what was going on with my back and how to fix it, even after multiple doctors were stumped. I went from being in tears when I bent over to the side to working out almost every day again. He works magic!! One of the great things about Dr. Davis is the take-home knowledge he gives you. I still use the exercises and remedies he taught me to prevent my injury from coming back. I recommend him to everyone I know; he is certainly a PT that you can trust. I threw my back out weightlifting and went to see this team because they were very near to my place and I had already gone there because Austin Massage is co-located with them. I was not disappointed. My first evaluation was with Phil and he quickly got me into a position where i could at least walk better. His recommendations for home therapy helped greatly. I followed up with some PT sessions with Blaze and really liked his bedside manner. Both guys are welcoming, intelligent and observant and obviously know their respective professions very well. The entire staff is incredibly warm and friendly and that often makes or breaks my desire to return to a provider like this. While I hope I won't need their services anytime soon, I certainly will know where to go if I happen to put my back out again! read more

Dr. Phil Davis is clearly an expert who has offered physical therapy services in Austin since 2007 and at the Training Room since 2011. I visited with a minor hamstring strain and got a helpful evaluation and direction following my very first visit. I'm so grateful to Dr. Davis and Blaze! I went in with a torn rotator cuff and was in serious pain/discomfort. After 16 sessions the pain is gone, my mobility is back, and I'm regaining strength in that shoulder. They are super knowledgeable and understanding. They not only helped me work through the physical aspects of the injury, but also the mental part of getting back to training, without the fear of re-injuring myself. I've used Dr. Phil as my PT for two injuries in the past 4 years. Initially, post shoulder surgery for a torn laberum when he was at a different business and more recently I tracked him down for recurring lower back pain. Every time, I feel back to 100% with his guidance. Very knowledgeable and experienced, and he isn't scared to push you to get you back to working out ASAP. Tip from working with him a bit: ask him for advice on your personal work out/health plan. Even if its weird like throwing logs at a local park, he'll apply it to your situation. I gained a good amount of my knowledge from Phil that I still apply to my work outs. read more

After my wife had great results with Dr. Davis, I decided to hurt my knee just to see what all the hoopla was about. OK, that's not how it happened, but after I had knee surgery I did go see Dr. Davis and he fixed me up. He was very specific about my care and he stuck with me through a long healing process. He was so motivating that I took to calling him "Dr. Coach". His staff was also very professional and down to earth, a tough combination to pull off. But, they did it. Dr. Davis and his staff are professional and really know their stuff. I woke up one day with some nasty surprise muscle spasms and stiffness in my neck and shoulders. Spent about a week trying to ice/heat, drug and self-massage it all out, but to no avail. I realized I needed professional help...My wife had gone to Dr. Davis before for some serious musculoskeletal problems, and recommended him. Dr. Davis and his assistant had me do some exercises, performed some massage/therapy work on me, and sent me home with exercises to do. After my first appointment I felt 75% better, and after 2 subsequent visits I felt right as rain. I would recommend this facility for big or small issues or injuries, since both my wife and I were very happy with the process and outcome of the physical therapy, and I know a lot of triathletes that see him for problems. read more

My physician referred me to the Training Room. It was close to where I live. I had been to a couple of physical therapy places to deal with my frozen shoulders without many good results. The staff at the Training Room is pleasant. However, they overbook and don't allow a full hour for each session. Much of the hour is spent on heat while the only therapist is working with another patient. I had to cancel an appointment and left a message on their voicemail on a Saturday. They received the message before my appointment on Monday however they charged me for the missed session. Yes their policy states 24 hours but I had asked them on several occasions if they could work with me due to my erratic schedule. They indicated they would. They don't hesitate to call me incessantly to collect the missed appointment charge but have charged my insurance company for many sessions for an hour when I actually only received 20-30 minutes of actual time. I do not recommend this place. read more

I came in to The Training Room from a friend's recommendation and I'm so glad I did. I've been experiencing chronic neck/back/shoulder pain for about 6 months before I came here - I started PT at another clinic and did PT there for about 1.5 months - and my symptoms never improved, and if anything got worse. I started seeing Dr. Vilas about a month or so ago, twice a week. She was very attentive to my needs/pain experience, and tailored her treatment plan for me to first reduce the inflammation/irritation that was causing a lot of nerve pain, and then we started strengthening. After going to see her twice a week for a few weeks, I am finally seeing great results. I am super happy with the progress I've been making and HIGHLY recommend seeing Dr. Vilas. We've also been incorporating dry needling into my treatment, which previously I would have been extremely skeptical of. I was in so much pain and desperate to try anything that would help, and I do not regret trying it. It definitely helped my muscles release (it is supposed to reset your neurological system), and I think it was one of the main things that enabled me to even begin strengthening exercises in the first place. It is a miracle of a treatment if you have chronic pain/muscle tightness. Dr. Vilas is super friendly and truly cares about her patients and their progress. read more

May 2020, I went to the training for a period of 10 sessions for a back injury and they were super professional, helpful, and great to work with. They gave me tools to work with and recognized when I needed further medical assessment when things plateaued. I worked with both PTs and they are great at communicating and working with me as an individual. Highly recommend them and I plan to go back. read more

I didn't have a good experience here. The PT asked me to do some exercises and was very negative about the way I was performing them (note they didn't have the equipment I normally use) so I cancelled. They then hit me with a $500+ bill after telling me they had authorization from my insurance for the sessions which they actually didn't. Somehow other PT places in town found this out but not The Training Room, so don't count on them to do any insurance verification or be subject to a serious financial penalty. read more

I have unfortunately gone to several physical therapists in my life, but Dr. Davis and the Training Room was by far my best experience. I went there to treat a dislocated shoulder and was able to recover back to normal well before my orthopedics' expectations. I highly recommend Blaze. I have a torn rotator cuff, causing loss of use of my shoulder. Likely I caused it with repetitive motion during my weightlifting regime. My goals are to let my shoulder heal without using steroids and to prevent future injury to this or my other shoulder. My shoulder feels "out of socket" and Blaze is the first medical professional to help me to get it back in place with stretch and massage. He showed me exercises that I can do at home to strengthen the muscles to keep my shoulder in the correct position. The MDs pointed at my MRI resolutions, showed me my injuries, and gave me theories, but never actually touched my shoulder. Blaze actually provided relief. I wish that I had sought physical therapy sooner. read more

I cannot say enough positive things about Phil, Blaze, Avelina, and the rest of the crew at The Training Room! I am a very active adult, and along with an active lifestyle comes injuries and physical maintenance. So I am no stranger to physical therapy. Throughout my adult life I've been to several physical therapy groups for both surgery recovery and general strains/sprains, and The Training Room is BY FAR the best I've experienced. I rate physical therapists on 1) their knowledge of the body and mechanisms of healing, 2) the physical healing environment. Relative to 1), they are extremely intelligent and knowledgable people at The Training Room. They are highly trained, and I trust them implicitly. Relative to 2), the physical healing environment at The Training Room is second to NONE, and it is very much conducive to healing. The Training Room staff will chat and laugh with you about life, or they will allow you to be quiet and focus on your exercises...it just depends on who you are and how you prefer to approach treatment. To me, having interaction with the staff and getting to know them has made my own personal healing process for various injuries that much more efficient. Physical therapy can be hard and is certainly not at the top of everyone's "Favorite Things To Do List," but the combination of the clinical expertise with a positive healing environment makes me sing the praises of The Training Room. This place cut me off because I missed appointments with back pain. They treat people with injuries, but fail to show sympathy for the injuries they're treating. I cancelled a few appointments within 24 hours and missed a few. I paid a $75 cancellation fee each time, without complaint. So, the therapist essentially got to take a break due to my absence. Today, someone called to say they needed to get my credit card "on file" (apparently, they had not charged me for the last miss), then after I gave her the credit card information, announced I would no longer be served and my appointment that week was cancelled. I'm surprised this place receives so many positive reviews. read more

I broke my shoulder and arm in a skiing accident and looked around for a good PT. Luckily, I found The Training Room as they have it all. Great therapists, great staff and great attitude.
