Went to tropics for lunch wt friends in late October beautiful day but kind of cool that day so we ask for soup but they do not have,OK no big deal this place is definitely set up for summer fun,I had the rib eye steak sandwich which the server did not ask me how i would like it done. I asked if I could have it on garlic bread she said NO.Let's just say she wasn't very friendly The wife had a BLT she said it was just okay. Our friends ask about the pizza again our server just look at us like we are crazy.C'MON give us something like the pizza good try this try that nothing out of her. We recently went into Tropics this past Friday ,we were seated and waited 20 min at which time no waitress had come near us finally the young lady that seated us not a waitress brought us some water and apologized for the wait. I at this time had had enough and walked out, if this is the kind of service I can expect it will save a few trips to the lake front we have dined there quite a bit in the past even used their services for a couple of parties,very very disappointed!. Terrible value for your money. $23 got us 3 chicken tenders, water, and some tortilla chips with strange looking cheese sauce.

Service is a bit slow at times, but the people are friendly, and the food is definitely a step above (in both quality and diversity) what you get at your usual bar & grill. Great location on the docks, this place is always where we head after coming in from scuba charters. read more

we were there Friday Oct 5th, 7:30 PM. There was a sparse crowd probably due to the impending storms. My companion had the Brat burger, not too bad. I had the Grouper bites, quite fishy. But as I was about 2/3 of the way thru the meal what did I detect?? Welllll, yes, hello Mr (or Ms) blond hair about 3 maybe 4 inches long and that cinched things for me. Needless to say I did not finish the meal. I know people might say that could happen at any time. I eat out a lot and I really cannot remember the last time I was treated to a hair IN my meal. I did not complain to the server. Aug. 2015 Unbelievable unfriendly owner towards boaters. Note to owner...bad news travels tenfold, and I shared this experience with many more than that! Facts...My wife and I boated 20 miles for lunch only to be seated at an outside side table overlooking a parking lot. So I asked the manager if we could sit at a table overlooking the harbor, and she said yes. We almost sat down when the very angry owner came storming out saying if we wanted to stay, we must sit overlooking their parking lot. When he got nose to nose with me, I just left. Really?? It must be nice having too much business to be rough with your customers (there were no inside patrons and only 5 two person outside tables were occupied). For boaters there are many much better options at both Kenosha and Waukegan harbors. read more

After more than 10 years coming to the Tropics, we had the worse experience ever. A special treat for my husband who loves the Tropics on Fathers Day turned into a very disappointing experience. We walked in and requested the outside seating that was not available. The hostess took our name and asked us to come back in about 20 minutes; we went for a walk and returned to learn that outside seating was still not available. We were seated inside, then the manager decided not to take food orders for an undetermined period of time (really)?! We walked out and I think we will never come back. To add insult to injury, the waitress was rude and unaccommodating. The Tropics just lost a customer that frequents the Tropics with parties of at least of 6-8 people. We will make sure our friends know about this incident as well. We have been to hundreds of restaurant around the world, we have never seen a manager that halts order taking, what an idiot! read more

This place could be so great. The location, right on the water, is beautiful. Unfortunately, the food is only OK at best. I've ate there several times and have never been impressed. However, the staff and drinks are usually good. I just feel like there is a lost potential here. Go there for drinks and atmosphere but don't expect to be wowed by the food. read more

Tropic is my happy place! Not just because of the delicious homemade cocktails and great beer & wine choices. It's on the water surrounded by a marina full of cool boats. The views are priceless. The deck could not have been designed better and I heard the owner did it himself. They are very dog-friendly too. The atmosphere is pure tropics. Hence the name I guess! The staff are all amazing and the food is exceptional. Always delicious. Everything we have ever ordered is fabulous. My fave...teriyaki wings. Homemade ranch dressing. Go check it out. The food here is awful I ordered the Tuscan burger and it was spiced up so strongly that the spice was the only thing that you could taste. the burger tasted like some of the worst meatloaf I've ever had . A big frozen patty. the fries are okay. I tried the pizza it was undercooked and mediocre at best. the service here was very very slow. The saving grace that helped to earn this restaurant three stars is that the view when eating outside may be one of the best views you can find at any restaurant anywhere close to here. So, I was heading up to Winthrop Harbor and wanted a great view of the lake to kill some time. It's in an amazing location, harbor, boats, lake, great patio, good beer selection. I had read a few of the yelp reviews and was aware of the negative remarks about the service and the owner. I found everyone very attentive and nice. I work with the public as well and I find it incredible that angry people can so easily ruin the reputation of a business. I will be returning when the weather gets warmer and hope I can score an outdoor patio seat and try a few more beer varieties. read more

Wow, the management of this place is horrendous! We have tried twice to go to this restaurant and each time left completely unhappy. The first time was a Friday night and we just wanted to get get a beer and perhaps a snack. We sat outside and it took the waitress 20 minutes even to acknowledge us even though she was very happy to serve the table sitting right next to us. We thought because it was a Friday night, we could give the girl some slack because it was pretty busy. The second time we tried to go was just last night and that was a totally different story. It was not busy whatsoever. We walked up with our dog (passed 2 barking shit-zu's that tried to attack everyone) and my fiance popped his head into the bar area and asked if were allowed to sit on the covered deck. The bartender gave us the go ahead and said she'd send someone out. The waitress came and immediately told us "they weren't serving there" even though there there were tables with dirty glasses on them and one that had birthday balloons and leftover wrapping. We asked why not and how it was any different than being served 5 feet away at a table in the sun? So, she went back into to make sure and out came what must have been the manager literally yelling at us a multitude of reasons why we can't eat there. These reasons ranged from no dogs allowed (remember the shit-zu's 5 feet away trying to bite everyone?), to "not enough staff" even though the place was probably 1/3 filled with customers, if that, to "there's a long wait list to sit outside - if that's the problem, why aren't people allowed to sit on the deck? Maybe it's because we drove up in a lexus and not a boat that we weren't served each time? How dare we not be as rich! read more

Horrible experience. We were seated outside right away. We looked over the menus and waited....and waited....and waited. Two waitresses brought orders out to other tables..still waited. Another couple was seated a couple of tables over. A waitress got their drink orders..brought them their drinks then got their food orders. We were still sitting there with no service. My husband went inside and spoke to a woman that was an owner. Her reply, " Uh sorry." My husband replied to her indifference that we were leaving. She sad, " Okay, thanks." I couldn't believe it. I will never go back. If customers mean so little to the management. read more

This is a true bar atmosphere with ok food. Their Saturday prime rib is just okay, nothing special. We usually come for the sandwiches and burgers that are pretty good. Ribs are ok. Much nicer as a boating bar than a sports bar. read more

This restaurant has been in our area for about 4 years now and is the only marina/water front restaurant in the area. The food is good with the pizza being a favorite. The biggest disappointment is the staff, in particular the servers in the dining area. We were told a table would be ready within 10 minutes and this was on a slow night. It actually took 40 minutes and this because the hostess forgot about us. 20 minutes after being seated our waitress was did not smile and greet us, but asked if we paid for our drinks before sitting down. She was borderline rude, and snotty, as a previous reviewer stated. 30 minutes later, she brought out the main course, before the appetizer. When we objected and asked to have the appetizer first, she refused, and said it was not her fault. It only went downhill from there.. All and all it took us 2 1/2 hours Unprofessional treatment of customers is a major problem of this establishment and the hiring of more mature experienced servers would make all of the difference. We would like to go back and try this place after not going to it for over 2 years. However, from what I can read from the other reviews it is still business as usual. If the owner would make sure that the staff is properly trained, and not make scenes himself, but sure that he is providing good service, this place might have a chance. read more

This was my FIRST TIME here after seeing Ad's in the Kenosha News for this Restaurant. I wanted so much more in the food quality and Menu. I loved the view from this Restaurant BUT WAS COMPLETELY LET DOWN BY THE SERVICE AND THE FOOD. Do Not Order the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich (WebSite Menu States $10.95 it is $11.95). The "Meat" is mystery meat. The twisted (like my Grandmother' s twisted Arthritic Knuckles) meat chunks. The green peppers and onions had no browning or caramelizing to them they were either steamed (barely softened like boiled). This Sandwich is suppose to have mushrooms which I counted three tiny slices. The ''thick'' onion rings are greasy and not very good. I wanted to order Sweet Potato fries but was told they had none. They are on the Menu. They have no soup here. The Ribs and Prime Rib are ONLY ON WEEKENDS. There used to be a restaurant with similar indoor atmosphere called ''Captains Cove" on Hwy 20 & I-94 that I loved the food there was SO......MUCH BETTER than this restaurant; they have since closed. I was looking for a NEW restaurant with a tropical and beach theme and great food BUT I DID NOT FIND THAT AT THE TROPICS RESTAURANT. My food took quite some time to get and I was hungry. I wish they would have had some "bar" popcorn or something to nibble on. When my server did bring my food she NEVER checked back with me until it was time for the bill. My server never asked how my food was. Two of the waitress were sitting down eating their meals while waiting on their customers. I like the atmosphere here but they NEED BETTER FOOD and probably a NEW MENU before I could come back to dine here again. The food at Illinois Beach Resort (Lakeside Restaurant) food is much better. read more
