Whenever we spend an evening in Northampton, The Tunnel Bar is where we begin the night. We have been coming to this bar since our undergrad and we continue to come back for a few reasons. 1. The martinis here are incredible, our favorite has to be their Jolly Rancher. 2. The bar is really unique and we love to sit in both the tunnel as well as in their upstairs area. 3. The ambience here is creepy which leads to some fun conversations. That being said, we have had some criticisms after our last few experiences. 1. The bar itself has a weird smell since the floor is carpet that doesn't get cleaned often. 2. The newer bar upstairs is great, but the comfort of sitting in their upstairs area has been ruined because people come in and out of the upstairs door and make a ton of noise. 3. my friends and i used to love going here but the vibe from staff has become pretentious and rude. this is the second time where they've waited for us to order drinks and almost immediately after have turned on the lights and announced it was last call and they're closing the bar. both times we had less than 20 minutes to drink our entire cocktails and both times the bar closed an hour before the listed time. they really should change the time to closes at midnight since that's the truth. we arrived at 11:40pm and at 12:01am when we got our drinks they started closing up despite the listing saying 1am closing. it's a scam. disappointing to say good bye to this place since we used to enjoy it but we won't be going back anymore. read more

We got there about a half hour after they opened on a Saturday, place was already pretty packed but still had a few of the nice leather seats open. We sat right in the front by the door and our waiter came right over. He asked me what kind of drinks I liked, I replied with "something strawberry-ish." My fiancé and I went here one evening this last week. It was unfortunately the most unpleasant dining experience, I've received since relocating to Western Massachusetts 3 years ago. Our initial server Zachary was great; pleasant, personable and attentive. However, at some point we got a new server, which was fine but no one ever made us aware of the changes. Amira was rude, short and made us feel as if we were an inconvenience to her. She walked by our table several times without acknowledging or checking on our drink/food needs. We noticed she was not this why with her other tables. I don't know why she treated us disrespectfully but as a black couple in Western Massachusetts it makes me wonder if this was the reason. We don't want to completely write off the Tunnel bar, it's local with a creative menu and fun atmosphere. We are not going to let Amari take that away from us. We just hope she doesn't treat others this way and the management team addresses her behavior. read more

We arrived and ordered drinks and apps. It was 4 pm (when they opened) and they said they were out of the duck confit poutine. My wife got her drink and sad it was "watered down", my non alcoholic drink was just ok. The server came over with our steak and cheese egg rolls and ribs. No plates, no silverware. The eggrolls had no sauce and no cheese. Mind you they are steak and cheese eggrolls. We asked the bartender for a new order. About 15 minutes later the server came out and gave our eggrolls to the table behind us. When we finally got them they again had no cheese and were flavorless. The only good thing about this experience was the bartender. He apologized and took the eggrolls off the bill. The second bartender brought us the pretzel cheese sauce also apologizing and stating the cook was new. Both bartenders were attentive the whole time. The server kept coming down not knowing where to deliver food to. He was clearly new and not trained at all. I blame management for that. Our bartender did his best to explain the tables to him. I used to love this place because it was (as another poster stated) eccentric. The martini's were ok though I'm not a big martini fan. When I went I usually had something else-a beer, a rum and coke, etc. and no problems. For me this bar was more about meeting friends for a drink and having good conversation in an unusual environment. I loved the dark, rich decor, it felt like you were on some kind of spy mission. HOWEVER, the last time I went which was back in Dec/Jan. I went with two friends. We chit chatted with the nice bartender about the furnishings. He then began to tell us "You wouldn't want to see this place with the lights on, this carpet is so dirty" . We thought, well maybe he should get the message to the owner and he/she/they could do something about it. Bartender: Yea the owner will never change it, he hasn't changed anything since he bought the place just look at how all these chairs have been ripped. He's only into this place to make money and that's what he's doing. The 3 of us looked at each other, a little disturbed by the comments but hoping he was somehow exaggerating-though the quality of the chairs was immediately noticable. These chairs had seen better days. 3 beers and a chocolate martini later, a couple of us went to use the restroom upstairs, when we came back we sat down and went on with our conversation...until...we saw them!!!!!!! I noticed something moving on the wall beside me and earlier we noticed a couple of other patrons acting skittish as well. Waterbugs! ( I think that is what they are called ) running hurridly up the wall. My friends and I bolted from the area so fast, dusting ourselves off in the process and long afterwards. Who knows where they came from or what they got into (my friends purse on the floor? my shoes? ) but even in the dim lighting I was able to see them. We left and never came back. I have never been so disgusted and have never seen anything with so many legs in an establishment meant to serve food/or drinks to people. I'm very saddened by that, as this place had a really cool and different vibe to it. Whoever the owner is really needs to get crackalackin' with sprucing this place up and calling pest control. I understand that the place is technically in an old tunnel which is all the more reason to keep up with the bug control! It honestly deserved 1 star after my last trip there but I am giving it 2 because of my many fond memories of what it USED to be. A very cool, clean and inspiring place. read more

I've been lukewarm to this "iconic" bar the last several times I've been there, enjoying a different socializing space once the always overwhelmed and socially difficult bartenders notice you and serve a drink. Granted, this is not the place you go on a regular basis, but the place you have to go when out-of-town friends visit as it's probably the only bar in New England shoved in a small, cramped underground walkway death trap, surely pushing the envelope in regards to fire code. As mentioned in prior reviews, the employees have some attitude issues, the kind you'd expect in underground people. I don't Yelp every place I go, but only the amazing, terrible, and strange enough situations to alert other people. My most recent visit, bringing several friends from out of state, was one of these strange/bad situations. The bartenders need help, badly. We waited 20 minutes at the bar initially for a drink, watching the staff run around and bump into each other in the tight space looking like a bunch of frazzled interns on their first day at work at their new real job. It was not proportionate to the number of patrons being served at the bar. Secondly, the weird underground social issues are worsening. A creepy looking bartender thought he could gauge my gfs blood alcohol content while we were standing 10 feet from him discussing our next drink. He either couldn't make eye contact or the glasses rims were too thick, don't know. As she did not appear drunk to any of us we asked, he couldn't explain. He made the rest of us drinks but we decided to take our business elsewhere and those drinks disappeared behind the bar. Third, attitude extends to all employees. We said nothing to the bartender but back at our table while collecting coats, the little table cleaning guy eavesdropped on our conversation and reported the insulting nature of our conversation to the bouncers. We were talking in normal voices amongst one another at our table. With the grace of a baby bird trying to fly and the look of adrenaline and nervousness in their eyes that comes only through inexperience, they told us it was time to leave. We weren't heartbroken and our lack of caring rubbed these rooks the wrong way, getting us a "actually, don't come back for 30 days!", while we were walking out. This is a twice per year type of bar. 30 days, no problem. Ha. So here's the story of how our free speech was censored at tunnel bar, a bar staffed full of overly sensitive underground people in an overly sensitive town. Very awesome idea. Why let an abandoned railway stop be a sore spot for the town. You literally feel the history around you. They aim for classy-sophisticated and nail it from the decor, to the lighting, to the music. This isn't a bar to come to if you don't have a job or love putting away PBRs. It seems that this little gem could use a serious facelift. When I lived in the area, I would frequent this enough. Good place for a first date, fancy cocktails with girlfriends. I loved the overstuffed leather chairs, the long tunnel, the dark lighting. I went a few months back, and was really sad. Where were all the young, mature 20-30 somethings, enjoying cocktails and beers? It was replaced with college co-eds and meat heads. Girls making out at the bar, egged on by the bartender. I have only been to the Tunnel Bar a handful of times...okay maybe two handfuls. It is expensive. Obviously it is a martini bar, but if you don't want one of those, their mixed drinks are huge as well. The drink list is extensive. I only ever find I want to go here with a few girlfriends, or maybe if I have dinner across the street at Sierra Grille first. On a weekend night, it is possible that you won't be able to find a seat. This can be potentially uncomfortable, as there isn't a ton of standing room. Given the price of the drinks and my budget, however, I usually only stay for one drink anyway, so I don't mind standing. They also don't seem to mind if you rearrange the chairs a bit if you come with a large group. That said, last time I went my experience was terrible. My bartender, who has been my kind, friendly bartender previously, must have been having an off night. My parents were in town for my graduation, my roommate and her boyfriend were along. It was busy but not too busy. He literally yelled at us to decide what we wanted (remember - extensive drink menu) and even threw my mother's credit card at the computer. I work in foodservice, and thus am rather understanding when it comes to having a bad day, but this was inexcusable. You have to able to put the face on, especially when you've got an easy ten bucks coming your way for 3 minutes of work. Needless to say, it didn't turn out that way for him. Had the first of many, many vodka gimlets here. It is basically my favorite bar of all time, rivaled only by Packard's. Ambiance is amazing. Overstuffed leather sofas and the unique rounded tunnel roof make for a cozy, sophisticated and quirky feel, which truly adds to the experience. This place is almost always packed, even on weekdays, but I found that instead of being a point of contention, the lack of space and seating usually leads to conversations with perfectly amiable total strangers. Martinis are pricey but strong and delicious. If I recall correctly, they also have a decent stock of wines. I would definitely suggest a visit (or ten) if you've never been. read more

In my previous review, I noted that service in the lounge areas can be pretty bad. On a recent Saturday night, I was reminded of that unfortunate fact. Four of us snagged a table and chairs right next to the bar, and after watching cocktail servers walk past us with nary a glance in our direction for close to ten minutes, our friend finally went up to a waiter who was standing at the bar to ask for a cocktail menu. He was advised to "look around" for one. Some time later, a waiter appeared (with a couple of menus, to his credit). We ordered drinks. We drank them. We waited with empty glasses for another insanely long period of time. The people at the table next to us started screaming at each other. I mentally prepared myself to fill out a police report. If the wait staff can't keep up with the volume of customers, it's time to hire more servers. (And print more flipping menus!) The novelty of drinking in a tunnel doesn't outweigh the interminably slow service. Also, the place smelled really musty. read more

Architecturally, Tunnel Bar is a perfect example of reuse of space. Taking the lower tunnel entrance out of the old Northampton train station, the bar has become a cozy setting to sit back with friends and enjoy one of the many martinis or other drinks available. The room is appropriately dim, with massive leather and cloth armchairs. Efficient space use? Not really, but it looks really classy. Drink menus are both massive and readily available. For the size and strength of the drinks, the prices are appropriate. Avoid this place at all costs on a Friday or Saturday night. Tucked away under the bridge under the old railroad tracks built in an old subway tunnel from the late 1800's. An amazing atmospheric location that is hard to beat no matter where you live or go. At night it does get darker in here even with the lighting but the intent is for it to feel like a swank upscale Bar. Beer is available and on tap but that isn't really the vibe here, they have more of a martini and cocktail vibe, with an extended lounge are. They are aptly connected to the Union Station Restaurant, so people waiting there come into the lounge for a drink. Much older crowd typically than the college scene and much more social and refined than the sports bar scene. 21 only, don't bring your kids, for good reason, this is an all drinking lounge that wouldn't work for them and they truthfully would probably get weirded the F out. Best cocktails in NoHo. They have a list that is a little overwhelming. Would be easier if they broke up by type of alcohol. Absolutely brilliant on some of their drinks. Only two issues that were in reality nonissues were, we could see if you were sitting in the lounge seats it may take longer to get waited on. So if you want to hit a couple drinks quick and bounce sit at the bar. Two, the bar was a little sticky, there was only one bar tender when we came and she really didn't have time to do anything more than make drinks when the crowd developed like it did on a Thursday at 7 PM. The Tunnel Bar is really not a bar that is going to appeal to everyone, but it seems to appeal to enough people as it is always packed. Personally, I love everything about the place. The concept of using the old walkway tunnel for a bar is ingenious and gives the place so much atmosphere. The rough hewn stone on the lower walls and the smooth tile that stretches up gives the place a charm that you don't find in many places. Coupling that with the high back leather chairs lining both sides of the tunnel and it becomes a cozy place that you just want to sit and drink the evening away...which is what I tend to do when I get the chance to visit. I make it a habit to try and introduce my friends to the Tunnel Bar whenever they are in town as I know that they will fall in love with it. The only downside is that you tend to have to get there pretty early in the evening if you want to have any hope of scoring a place to sit. By the time it's 7 or 8, you'll be one of many who are standing around, watching and waiting for a seated group to depart so you can jump in and claim the vacated real estate. The prices are on the high side, but I find that the quality of the drinks justifies the cost. You won't find any watered down, flavorless concoction here. The introduction of some wi-fi would be a nice improvement, but the absence of it and the lack of cell reception (gee...no cell signal when you're sitting inside of a rock tunnel? Who'd have thunk it?) means that you get to spend more time enjoying the company of your companions without the distraction that phones can be these days. I will always end up heading back into the Tunnel whenever I have the chance to enjoy a night out with my friends as I have yet to be disappointed by them. read more

However on a recent Wednesday night, the service was more than lackluster, even though there are menus at each individual table, the bartender never came over despite making eye contact numerous times. The Tunnel bar used to be an old passage way that has been revived and turned into a bar. Note: If you are from out of state, the bouncer will ask for another proof of identity, a credit card with your name on it works. You need to get there rather early, since the bar tends to fill up relatively fast, it is not a colossal bar, but totally worth a visit. No joke! My last 2 trips to the tunnel bar have been so unpleasant. RUDE bouncers and RUDE bartenders, on separate occasions. If staff at the tunnel bar can't wait on you without making disrespectful comments to perfectly pleasant customers, they should keep their mouths shut! In addition, two drinks slid right off our table... no one bumped the table. Sitting, chatting, then- wham! Right on the floor. They made us new drinks but one staff member proceeded to tell us to "be careful." We told another staff member that the drinks slid right off and they replied saying "it happens sometimes" and that the tables are uneven. Well, did your tables! The place also has a noticible odor. The building is too beautiful to be treated so poorly, it's a shame. The only good thing about this place is that the drinks are delicious. read more

This is one of the coolest places in Massachusetts. No, in America! Before moving to Northampton a few weeks ago, I read about this spot on many a "Best Of" list and was dying to check it out so I made it one of my first stops upon arrival. I was not disappointed. Built inside of an old subway tunnel from the 1800s, this place can be a little hard to find. It's sort of off-the-beaten path, and tucked under a bridge, but it's worth finding! Once you discover it, plan to stay for a while and enjoy a couple martinis in their super comfy wingback leather chairs. It's a very loungey vibe. There's a restaurant (Union Station) upstairs, so some people are enjoying a drink while they wait for their table. It's not super loud, so you can definitely have a conversation with whoever you're with. This is definitely a date night spot, or a place to hang out with just a friend or two. It's an older crowd. Not "old," but it isn't a college kid vibe. The martinis are excellent! The bartenders and servers are really knowledgable and really helpful. They can help you decide on a martini or cocktail that's right for you, and everything's served really quickly. You'll definitely get your drinks sooner if you sit at the bar, as opposed to sitting in the lounge seating, but I think it's worth waiting a few more minutes to enjoy the space.
