Cut and Shave Barbershop - Old Town North Alexandria…read moreOver the past 14 years I've had only intermittent success in finding a barbershop that I could rely upon. I'm not a purist - mostly I'm just looking for a standard haircut at a reasonable price. I found what I was looking for when I visited the Old Town North Cut and Shave Barbershop. This shop is one of three Cut and Shave locations and is in that part of Old Town that features a great Sheraton Suites hotel, Trader Joe's, Hank's Oyster Bar, and Harris Teater. (The other Alexandria shops are at the Braddock Road Metro station and on Eisenhower Avenue). For my first visit I had an appointment, but during the time I was waiting I saw walk-in customers, so I think both walk-ins and appointments are accommodated. Note that there's a check-in tablet near the cash register, and it's important to sign in upon arrival. I think that way walk-ins and reservation customers all can be accommodated. My barber, Queen, did a great job of listening to my concerns, and getting feedback while she worked. Queen clearly knew what she was doing, and did a fine job cutting my hair. This was a Men's Scissors Cut ($35 plus tip), and Queen matched the style I was looking for. For me, it takes a while to trust a barber. As this was my first visit, there's no final judgment here, just an endorsement based on a good initial impression. The plus here is if I do get to where I can fully trust Queen, I'll be able to get my beard trimmed as well as my hair cut. The shop in fact has a wide range of services, better than most shops that I've been to. Thus far, in the 14 years I've lived in Old Town, I have yet to find a barber who can trim my beard, so it would be great if that could happen at Cut and Shave.

My style is a one or a two on the sides and back. Half an inch from the top and comb it back. Done. Easy. I try to observe the other barbers with their clients. They all seem happy. In all that time I've looked to a number of barbers but hadn't really found one that worked well for me. Two months ago I was exploring Lee Street, just east of King Street, and discovered the Old Town Barber Shop. It's tucked in between Jack's Place (for breakfast and lunch) and Diya Indian Cuisine - and about three blocks from the Torpedo Factory. The free Alexandria DASH circulator bus service stops about a block from the shop, so it's easy to get to from either King Street or Braddock Road Metro Stations I was in the area visiting the new pub, the Commodore, which opened earlier this year next to the barbershop. When I saw there was no waiting at the barbershop and knowing I was due for a haircut, I took a chance on Old Town Barber Shop - and it turned out very well. The shop was clean, well-lit, and I met two barbers, Annie and Helen. Annie did an excellent job listening to my concerns. She made sure she knew what kind of cut I was looking for and then set about her work. She had no trouble achieving the results I was looking for, and I thanked her, paying $30 plus a $5 tip, a price that I've found to be well within reason for the area. The truth about a haircut shows up not as you walk out of the shop but how the hair looks a week later. Annie's work definitely passed that test, and for the next four weeks my hair looked like I wanted it to look. When I returned the following month, Annie once again met and exceeded my expectations.

Seems they accept cash, credit, and even Cash App as payment, which is convenient. A big plus here is that prices are actually slightly below typical barbershop prices, which is great. Was also very pleased with the actual cut. If you google this place you might get info saying that the shop is closed on Mondays. I literally just went in this past Monday so am thinking that information is outdated and probably wrong. Solid shop in a good location with good service - will come back again.

I called All American Barber Shop and spoke to a man who was so pleasant and welcoming; he said my name is Booker T, "come on in, I'll be waiting for you! " His voice reminded me of the old town barbers that served their community for decades and sure enough as soon as I walked in the door I could see and feel the love of an old Sokol barber who served the community in this shop. I loved seeing Young and old people walking by, they would pop in and give Booker T a "fist bump," handshake or a wave. Photos of happy customers adorned the walls along with citations from the mayor congratulating All American & Mr Booker T for the 50 plus years of service to the community. The ship is clean, and we'll maintain. Not only did my son get a nice hair cut, but we got a great history lesson and a new friend.

Update: it's the next day and my nail is already breaking and snagging thanks to the misuse of the e-file on my natural nails. This will be a long process to undo the damage that has been done.

N & J Nails is the rare exception. After visiting, you almost feel obligated to leave a 5-star review because they've earned it. For those who may not know, Tina and Ben haven't retired. They've simply moved on and created this wonderful salon. We weren't previous clients, but their reputation definitely preceded them. On a Saturday around 4:00 PM, my wife and I decided on a spur-of-the-moment manicure and pedicure date. Anyone who regularly visits nail salons knows that's usually a recipe for disappointment. Either the salon is fully booked, the wait is outrageous, or you end up with the technician nobody else wanted. Thankfully, luck was on our side. I went online and found only two appointment slots remaining. We selected our services, submitted the request, and within five minutes our appointment was confirmed. Shortly afterward, we received a phone call confirming everything and letting us know we could even arrive a little earlier if we'd like. Our appointment was scheduled for 5:15 PM. N & J Nails is located in Alexandria, just a few minutes from Potomac Yard and on the same block as Founding Farmers. Depending on traffic, the 9-mile drive from our home can take anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour. Thankfully, we made it in just under 30 minutes. Parking was easy. There is both street parking and garage parking available. We chose street parking and paid $4 for two hours, but learned that garage parking can be validated. When we arrived, we were greeted by the same gentleman who had called to confirm our appointment. It wasn't the typical "you're the last appointment of the day, let's get this over with" greeting. It felt like they had genuinely been expecting us and were happy we were there. We were offered beverages and snacks, then settled into the massage chairs for our pedicures. My wife worked with Tina while I had Linda. After reviewing the menu and confirming our selections, they made a few recommendations and got started. My wife chose a spa manicure and spa pedicure with gel polish and builder gel to help strengthen and grow out her natural nails. My service included callus removal, nail trimming and shaping, cuticle care, orange slices, a sea salt and mint mud foot mask, relaxing massage treatments, oil lotion massage, and hot towels. The total before tip was approximately $250 for both of us. Before Linda began, I warned her that I'm extremely ticklish. I usually end up asking technicians to skip the foot massage because it's never enjoyable. Not this time. For the first time ever, I was actually able to enjoy a foot massage. Linda clearly knew exactly what she was doing. There were a couple brief moments during the callus removal that tickled a little, but compared to every other pedicure I've received, it was minimal. The scrub, water temperature, calf massage, foot massage, and overall technique were absolutely perfect. The finished pedicure was flawless. Smooth feet. Perfectly trimmed and shaped nails. No pain. No bleeding. No rushing. What impressed me most was her attention to detail. Even after I would have been completely satisfied, she continued checking, refining, and perfecting her work. She clearly takes pride in what she does. The manicure was equally impressive. Every nail and cuticle received the same level of care and precision. Nothing felt rushed. Everything looked clean, polished, and professional. The hand massage was fantastic as well. I actually started writing this review on Saturday but intentionally waited until Monday to finish it because I wanted to see how everything held up. Two days later? Still perfect. My wife wrote her own review specifically for Tina, but she was equally impressed. Both Tina and Linda were exceptional. Throughout the appointment we shared laughs, had great conversation, and by the end it felt less like visiting a business and more like spending time with people who genuinely care about their clients. Even Ben stopped by toward the end and joined the conversation. That's what makes N & J Nails special. The services were excellent. The salon was spotless. Throughout our visit, staff continuously cleaned and maintained the space. The atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and relaxing. Most importantly, every person there genuinely seemed to care about delivering the best experience possible. I've been coming to Old Town Nail & Spa on and off for a while, mostly because it's close by…read more Unfortunately, this was my last visit. I had an appointment but still waited about 30 minutes. There were only three workers, which I understand, but it was still frustrating to wait that long with an appointment. The pedicure also felt rushed. Usually you get lotion and a little massage, but none of that was included. At that point I just wanted to get my nails done and leave. For my manicure, the technician used a portable UV lamp that made my nails burn. It was really uncomfortable, and he didn't seem concerned when I mentioned it. I got a French tip, and you could clearly see my nail beds through the polish. When I told him I wasn't happy with how it looked, he just said it was my natural nail instead of trying to fix it. The most disappointing part was the quality. I tipped, left, and in less than 24 hours my thumbnail had already chipped. That has never happened to me before not even when I do my own nails at home. I ended up going to a nail salon in South Carolina, and they immediately told me the nails weren't done well and that they wouldn't last. They also added a better nude base color so you couldn't see my nail beds anymore, which made a huge difference. That showed me that my nails could have been done correctly at Old Town Nail & Spa, but they simply weren't. They also told me more chipping was likely to happen. I paid a lot of money because I wanted my nails to look nice for a wedding that weekend, and instead I got poor-quality nails and disappointing customer service. Sadly, I won't be coming back.

I am writing this review to acknowledge the consistent, and indispensable customer service and management of Ms. Patrice Wright. I've been getting my hair cut at the Ultimate Barbershop for about six months now, and must confess that Ms. Wright have been nothing but nothing short of respectful, consistent with providing "first rate" customer service, kind, proper, professional, and contagiously polite. Of all the barbershops that I've ever patronized, I have never been made to feel so welcomed from the time that I stepped into the shop to the time I existed the shop. She is not only the consummate professional, she demonstrates everything that an employer private or, otherwise would want in their manager to manage their customer service component (service cycle). Worthy of mentioning, not only is Ms. Wright a skilled service provider, she is unquestionably the envy and personality of the Ultimate Barber Shop. For that reason, and so many others, I implore that the owner do what he/she can to keep her talent, skill set, and knowledge base as she is the epitome of customer service and who every employer regardless of sector desires to have managing their shop, unit, branch, division, department, or organization. It's a given that as you get older certain things in life lose their level of importance, and that which really matters takes precedence. I am not ashamed to say that if I am not under the care of John the Ultimate Barber by 8AM every Friday...there will be hell to pay! And everyone in my life has been made aware. To have found a barber with a genuine commitment to his craft, as well as his customers, was the ultimate find. When you and your barber are equally as anal about you having the perfect cut--you're golden! I don't even bother looking in the mirror at the end of my appointment, it just feels right! When it comes to my hair, it may not be much--but it's mine. John gets that, he listens to his customer base and responds with nothing short of the best service I've encountered. My only regret is not having found him sooner. A sentiment echoed by all of John's customers. It's been said that you're only as good as your last haircut. I'm not one to write reviews but in this case I will. I've been to many barbers in the pass, but this time was different. I started to cut my own hair because I had become frustrated going to places that did a good job but I either broke out or my wife didn't like it. Then I came across this gentleman calling himself "The Ultimate Barber". At first I laughed but I made an appointment online, which is incredible, and I got a confirmation email back for my appointment. I can write a long story but let me just say He educated me and showed me what to use to minimize my razor bumps. He's thorough, professional, quick, on time, and understanding. He's earned the name "The Ultimate Barber" and my wife loves his work as well. Well first and foremost, I would like to say that John isnt only the Ulitmate Barber he's a complete barber. He has very diverse clients. He does exactly what you ask him, and he's good at it. I came in Ultimate Styles Barber shop one day and I needed my haircut a certain way. I usually go to a different barber but unfortunately my usual barber didnt want to arrive until 10am on a Friday. So John squeezed me in between his appointments. Now most barbers would have tried to do a quick job so he wont interfere with his clients. Nope not John he got me in that chair, and took all of his skills and applied it to the clippers. I have a very dry scalp so he even washed it for me got it clean then made me look like a new man. Just over a year ago, I moved to Alexandria, VA to begin seminary; one of the first things I sought out was a barber. When searching online, I came across this barbershop and I was able to make an appointment conveniently online with Kirk. This shop is professional and their barbers are talented! Now almost two years later, I continue to go to this barbershop and specifically to Kirk (now, I don't schedule online but, via their app!) I am grateful for their work, their talent and their care for all of their customers. If you are one like I that moves on strict scheduling, this could be the Barber shop for you. John and his team was able to permanently lock me in on a weekly schedule. For me, this is a dream come true, lol. I have been coming here for only the past 3 weeks but have been more impressed each time. Our appointment started right on time and Melanie was so lovely and calm. She gave my son a great cut and couldn't have been nicer with a squirmy little guy! For my first visit I had an appointment, but during the time I was waiting I saw walk-in customers, so I think both walk-ins and appointments are accommodated. Note that there's a check-in tablet near the cash register, and it's important to sign in upon arrival. I think that way walk-ins and reservation customers all can be accommodated. My barber, Queen, did a great job of listening to my concerns, and getting feedback while she worked. Queen clearly knew what she was doing, and did a fine job cutting my hair. This was a Men's Scissors Cut ($35 plus tip), and Queen matched the style I was looking for. For me, it takes a while to trust a barber. As this was my first visit, there's no final judgment here, just an endorsement based on a good initial impression. The plus here is if I do get to where I can fully trust Queen, I'll be able to get my beard trimmed as well as my hair cut. The shop in fact has a wide range of services, better than most shops that I've been to. Thus far, in the 14 years I've lived in Old Town, I have yet to find a barber who can trim my beard, so it would be great if that could happen at Cut and Shave.

I called All American Barber Shop and spoke to a man who was so pleasant and welcoming; he said my name is Booker T, "come on in, I'll be waiting for you! " His voice reminded me of the old town barbers that served their community for decades and sure enough as soon as I walked in the door I could see and feel the love of an old Sokol barber who served the community in this shop. I loved seeing Young and old people walking by, they would pop in and give Booker T a "fist bump," handshake or a wave. Photos of happy customers adorned the walls along with citations from the mayor congratulating All American & Mr Booker T for the 50 plus years of service to the community. The ship is clean, and we'll maintain. Not only did my son get a nice hair cut, but we got a great history lesson and a new friend.

Today was my first haircut I got since before the pandemic. King barber was close by, so I figured I would go here. There was only one barber available (not a problem bc I was the only customer for the 40 minutes I was there). My barber was an older gentleman, and I asked for a medium skin fade with about 3/4 inch on top. when he said he was done, one side of my head was not faded, just a straight line from my mid temple, but the other side was faded nicely. I asked him if he could fade the left side of my head (to make it even)--but instead of doing that. he cut the hair on the other side of my head that was faded nicely, even shorter and higher. When my barber said he was done for the second time, my haircut was even more uneven, so I tried to explain the issue, and that I wanted both sides of my head to have even fades. He then fixed the fades, but when he said he was "done" for the third time, my hair on the sides of my head was so short, and the hair on the top of my head was so long, I looked like carrot top. At that point I told him to just give me a high and tight bc it was beyond styling. When I walked out, my haircut was still uneven. I ended up just shaving my head when I got home. Again, I initially had a wonderful experience with Okye, but I probably will find another barber shop next time.

What? It's a general accessible spot in a strip mall parking lot! The woman was concerned for the safety of her car, so she moved it, but that kind of bullying among the community of people with disabilities is shameful. Shame on you. We won't be back.
