I booked The Mischievous Nisse escape room and I loved every single second of it. It's a Christmas themed room, we were told that it was the beginner room (level easy) but it was far from easy. Phantom of the Big Top is probably the best escape room I have done so far! All the puzzles were challenging without being frustrating or annoying. The room was well-maintained and highly enjoyable to explore. The games master was very friendly and personable, and seemed to genuinely enjoy working there. Oh, and it's dog-friendly! I've wanted to try an escape room for a long time and it's so convenient that Solvang has one! Awesome location with parking in the back. It was easy to reserve a time online and read about the different challenges. Our group opted for the easiest one (the Mischievous Nisse), since none of us had done one before. Upon arrival, we signed the waivers and were then escorted into our room. The storyline is cute- Christmas themed. We were told partway through our game that items were set up incorrectly and items were open that shouldn't have been yet. That was a little frustrating since you're working through clues in a particular order. We also tried to solve as much on our own without asking for hints. Believe it or not, the easy one was challenging for us because we only had 3 minutes to spare. It's definitely an experience and fun to do with a group. It's also pretty affordable! read more

Fun escape room! Was initially debating between The Mischievous Nisse or Phantom of the Big Top. The Phantom of the Big Top is rated more challenging, but the reviews in regards to said escape room were not so stellar (contraptions not working properly, lack of flow, etc.). So we ended up going with the Christmas-themed escape room, The Mischievous Nisse. Spoke with Annette over the phone and she patiently answered all my questions. Also discovered that they offer discount codes for seniors, military, and first responders, so be sure to inquire about that! We enjoyed The Mischievous Nisse Escape Room. Even though it was rated easy, our group of seven did end up getting stuck two times, but got out with plenty of time to spare. So, there isnt much to do in Solvang during the evening times, so my boyfriend and I decided to do an escape room. It was both of our first times. We had a blast. When we booked, we did sunday at 5 15 pm. No one else was there so it was just us 2. Since it was both of our first times, of course we sucked haha. But the staff helped us (when we asked for it) and we were able to escape with 11 minutes left!!! It was seriously so much fun. The staff was amazing. Will def be back if I'm in town. Last minute decision to do the escape room so online it only showed Phantom of the Big Top available at 10 pm, which is difficult rating, but we decided to just have fun and try. Once we got settled in the room, he did offer the intermediate room, apparently it was available but we were already in so we stayed. The young man working was super friendly and helpful. A couple of the puzzles didn't work, but there were some unique puzzles in there. It was difficult and we did take some hints and almost finished but didn't quite make it. The "Mischievous Nisse" is a one-hour, Christmas themed room for 2-6 players. The theme did not appeal to me at first, since I am used to horror, sci-fi or fantasy themed escape rooms out there. The experience could be vastly improved if the website told you the difficulty of the escape room you chose. We wanted to come at 3PM, and the only choice for that time was the Big Top. When we arrived, the guy explained that it was pretty hard and had us to it. It was incredibly frustrating and we didn't even get halfway through the clues. When we were done, the guy asked us why we didn't pick a different, easier one. Well, how were we to know (as first-time escape roomers) that there were different levels of difficulty? Also, he said all of the rooms were available when we came, and had he known we didn't want the hardest one, he would have just moved us to a different room. Again, information that would have made the experience better. When in the escape room, you can raise your hands, and the attendant is supposed to give you a clue. This worked a few times, but one time he simply never came back over the PA system to help us. We held up our arms like idiots for five minutes, and he never answered. He told us later that he "had to step away" for a while. It seems to me he had a job to do and we were disappointed that something else took priority over our enjoyment of the experience. We still had fun, but it would have been far more enjoyable had we had any chance of solving all of the puzzles and if the attendant had been more helpful. read more

Best of all though the puzzles were really creative -- moreso than I've come to expect from escape rooms -- and challenging with a welcoming and friendly staff. I did the Gold Rush room, and I am sorry to say that it was my least favorite room out of all the escape rooms i've done. For reference, I have done about 50 rooms. The room was decorated nicely, but I disliked it because the puzzles were EXTREMELY unclear. The way the number combinations corresponded to the locks had no rhyme or reason. There were also unplanned "red herrings" around the room, due to the props still having largely visible factory codes on them. This threw us off because they were so obvious that they seemed to be part of the game. Another thing that irked me was that the game master had to tell us how to do a puzzle, and told us that they have to let every single group know the solution to that specific puzzle because no one ever understands how to do it. The staff was great don't get me wrong, but the room was so poorly done that I would not recommend it to anyone. read more

California Gold Fever was an all-around disappointing experience. The room itself was subpar. Very simple and very few puzzles. If this was a $20-25/person room, I'm not sure I'd be as disappointed, but we paid $39/person and we're out in less than 30 minutes. For anyone who's done more than a few rooms, skip this one (unless you're just feeling deprived of escape room experiences during the pandemic). read more
