    Bone Marrow

We had a reservation for 6 pm, we got there around 6:04 pm, and we were seated with our table near a large table of 8. We sat until 6:20 pm when the host brought us water and said she was sorry for the wait and that our waitress had a large table and would be there to help us shortly. Well 7 minutes later she finally came to the table to take our drink orders. I think it is extremely unprofessional to have people pass by us 20+ times and not one person stop and ask if we need anything or at least bring us water as we were sitting there for 15 minutes. The one thing that made us from not standing up and leaving was the other tables waiter, John. He is the only staff in the entire place that cares about customers! At least that we saw. Aside from the bone marrow bread and the shrimp cocktail, our steaks were dry and did not have a lot of flavor. My boyfriend ordered another drink that took 25 minutes to get and it came as we were almost finished with our meal. Dessert? I wouldn't know if you have it or not because we didn't get the option. We were brought our bill and that was it. 2 drinks were on the house for our wait but unfortunately we had multiple moments we were sitting waiting. I was really disappointed because The Undderground was recommended by a few of our friends. I hope that more servers are hired and another bartender. I would have given one star but John and the music made the experience a little better!

This place has the best steaks. It was melt in your mouth delicious. We also got the pork belly add on which is a must. For a side we ordered the fondant potatoes but they were just okay. This is a really great place to take a date. Very great atmosphere. Good food. Live music. The service wasn't bad but for the price, it could have been better.

If you're looking for an excellent steak this is the place to be. Most evening, especially Friday and Saturday, are on the busy side so you'll want to make reservations to be sure to get in. On the busiest nights they allot 2 hours for each table to enjoy dinner. We set out to have a really good steak dinner with friends. We weren't disappointed. We had a variety of cuts between all of us and every one of them was well prepared, served hot and was delicious. We also had a variety of sides including asparagus and roasted potatoes. All the sides were great as well. It's a very cute speak easy themed restaurant. The staff dresses in era appropriate clothing. Everyone was very friendly and attentive. When we arrived there was a piano player entertaining the guest but within 20 minutes we had a live band playing throughout our stay. Yes, it's all on the expensive end but it's an average price for most, good, steak houses in the Portland area. The food and experience is definitely worth a try at least once.

Amazing food and ambiance! We had a reservation at 8:30 and were a little late - apparently the kitchen closes at 9 PM!? We ordered as soon as we were seated. The oysters were wonderful, good amount and flavorful. All our steaks were delicious and cooked perfectly. All our drinks were tasty and the service was fantastic! Just wished the band played longer and food was served past 9, but besides that it was exceptional I'll definitely be back!

This place is such an experience! Everything from the jazz music to the speakeasy vibe, the traditional absinthe serving and the outfits made me so happy. Our waitress was excellent and gave us attentive and entertaining service. We ordered the bread, prime rib and the brussel sprouts. Do not sleep on this bread! Excellent starter to the meal and great pesto that comes with it! Brussel sprouts were also tasty and crispy, prime rib was maybe the underperformed of the night but still a star. A perfect spot for a date night or just a fun night with some friends and love that it's outside of the city so you're dealing with a different crowd!

One of the best dining experiences in the Portland metro area. This restaurant is located in the basement of a hotel. The vibes and decor looked like something straight out of proclamation and was very elegant. The waitresses even dress in feathers and dresses to fit the atmosphere. Now the food...absolutely amazing. I love a good steak and these did not disappoint. I got the tomahawk and my friend got the waygu. Both were delicious and reasonably priced. $55 for a 24oz tomahawk...can't get that too many places. The sides were delicious as well. We got the truffle mac and duck fat potatoes. The duck fat potatoes were average...not something I'd get again. The star of the night was the bread service with duck fattiere. That was AMAZING!! 10/10 and highly recommend. We devoured the food before we could snap a photo. Also neglected to take a photo of the chocolate cake dessert. Was nice and warm and yummy. I will for sure be back to this place. I loved the live jazz band playing, the service was phenomenal, and food was good quality and reasonable. For a glass of wine, 2 entrees, appetizer, and dessert W/ tip wasn't even $200. Amazing prices!

Thank you Underground for the great service and hospitality. We're coming back for more. And, Willow (reservationist) was exceptional. She took great care of me under the difficult circumstances (large party, last minute request, etc.) She was a gem to come through for us. Our event for our friend, Zenny's birthday was a success!! Thank you to your fabulous, professional staff, too. I, especially, was truly, impressed!! Thank you, And your music was on top of this planet!! Brenda

This place is one of those hidden gems for some great steaks. Its like a speakeasy vibe with live music. This time, we ordered our food family style so we can try a bit of everything. Their All The Things (bread board) is a great appetizer to get to share with the group. We ordered the Tomahawk, Porterhouse, Dry Aged ribeye, Snake River Farms Bavette, and Imperial Teres for our main entrees. We also ordered a handful of sides, with the Mac and cheese being my favorite. The service was good and attentive.

The aesthetics alone will soothe the savage beast. After a long day of flying this was a calming place to land. Lauren was AMAZING and that cake with the berries was simply decadent. What a perfect little gem! Will look forward to retuning just to unwind here.

Came here for a 7 person dinner and were very impressed with the decor and space. They had some live music that we really enjoyed. For dinner we had a seafood platter - the oysters, shrimp and crab legs were great - unfortunately we didn't enjoy the mussels and clams as much. For appetizers we had the bread service with burrata and the beet and ricotta salad. We also ordered the truffle mash and frites. For dinner we had salmon, the burger, and steak. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Great place for a big group.

The Underground is a place you're not going to want to miss. Located in the downstairs of the Monarch hotel. This is really considered a speakeasy, rather than a bar or restaurant. This is not to be confused with de fuego, which is located upstairs. Walking into this speakeasy, you'll find beautiful decor and well dressed staff that fits the scene. The warm environment and live jazz instantly makes you feel comfortable. With pre prohibition era cocktails, a bourbon bar, and a table side absinthe service, which is not to be missed. The cocktails here don't disappoint. The steaks here wonderfully dry aged and prepared to perfection. Whether you're having a Bavette or a Rib Eye, you'll enjoy every bite. However, as good as the steaks are, the appetizers and sides really shine. The Prawn Cocktail, Truffle Mac and Cheese, and Herb Roasted Petit Carrots should not be missed. I've been here twice now and I'm ready to go back. The live music is at the perfect volume, the latest band playing such classics has Moon River. The service here is outstanding. Dressed to fit the scene, polite, pleasant, and attentive. The food is prepared to perfections, and plenty of dessert options. If you're looking for a nice evening out with friends or a date with a loved one, you'll want to give The Underground a try.

The Underground was such a pleasant surprise! I didn't know it existed but I had a friend visiting me from another nearby Portland suburb while I was staying here and wanted to treat him to a drink. I saw the sign that said this speakeasy is rated in the too 50 of all speakeasies in the nation so we had to give it a try. This speakeasy is decorated in a very old school LA way. Super trendy and even classy. The live music was great and definitely provided a "vibe." Our server was super patient with and kind to my buddy and me. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised that they let us in because we were definitely not dressed for the occasion. We ordered the Prawn Cocktail and it was legitimately the best shrimp cocktail I've ever had. Super generous portion as well and was only $18, which is definitely a deal. We also ordered bread from a local bakery and it was some of the best bread I've ever had with great sides to compliment all those carbs. Next time I'm in the area, I'm going to definitely order a full meal here and treat myself to a steak! Oh and I almost forgot l, I don't think I've ever been to a $$$$ establishment before lol.

Made a reservation for a birthday dinner but our previous plans changed so we wanted to change our check in time. It was an ease to adjust and we were promptly seated near the jazz performance. Great ambience and decor at The Underground - the staff were nicely dressed to suit the theme as well. Per the recommendation from our server, we tried the Green Fairy which was a fun experience! Interesting combination of basil and absinthe in a drink. The fondant potatoes had a lingering duck fat flavor, bread device was great, and steaks were perfectly cooked.

We were visiting family in the area and had two people in our group local to the area who had been there several times in the past. We first went and checked in and were told there was a 10-15 minute wait. The hostess was very kind, took our number and sent us to the upstairs bar to wait for a table. We were greeted by a friendly bartender who took our drink orders (cocktails and wine) and we enjoyed our beverages while chatting by the bar. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with large velvet green booths, all new, updated and well done. The drinks were all great. The downstairs hostess came upstairs to let us know our table was ready, and we paid and went downstairs. So far, we were all really happy with our experience. The prices of the drinks were all around $15-20+ but we were all okay with it given the good service (thus far), high end atmosphere, etc. There were people in there but it was a pretty mellow Saturday evening. We were given a nice large area to sit and thanked the hostess. The waitress came and was clearly a little overwhelmed but took our drink orders. I mentioned a drink my husband had upstairs and asked if I could have it, but was told they had a different menu down here and I needed to order from that menu. I looked it over while the others ordered their drinks, and when she came back to me, I asked if I could go upstairs to order the drink I wanted, and bring it down. She said sure. I put in an order for a couple food items with her, and she left. My brother in law kindly offered to go upstairs and order the drink and was gone for quite a long time. We learned that when he was upstairs, he went to the bar and mentioned I wanted a drink from his bar. The bartender's mood shifted and he said he had 10 drinks ahead of my BIL, and asked him to go downstairs to order. My BIL informed him he was told the downstairs bar didn't have the ingredients, and was sent up here. The bartender was annoyed and asked my BIL to go downstairs for 10 minutes and come back again to order. My BIL replied that he was happy to wait at the bar instead and took a seat. After a long while, the bartender curtly said that my BIL would have to pay for the drink up here, which my BIL of course agreed to. My BIL said it was very uncomfortable and the bartender was being rude (a couple sitting at the bar also mentioned this). We are guessing he was overwhelmed and didn't handle it well. He brought the drink downstairs, no problem. We were all sitting for a while and noticed that my BIL never received the beer he ordered from the waitress downstairs. And after about 45 minutes I asked about the food I had ordered (she hadn't checked in with us at all during that time, and I should mention it was not busy at all - several tables open). The waitress said she forgot to put it in. That was it. No offer to quickly put it in, no offer to comp a drink, no real apology. We asked for the bill and split it between two cards. When we got the receipts and cards back, my husband found they had given both him and his brother (the other payer) copies of my husband's receipt-so he assumed he was double charged. He went to the front to bring this to their attention and explained how he was upset by the poor service throughout the evening. He received a quick response that they had printed the receipt twice (didn't charge twice) and were short staffed that evening. We are all understanding people and my sister in law ran restaurants for years, we all had food service jobs and are sympathetic but really just disappointed in this place. I'm writing this review because the employees there just didn't seem to care about the issues we raised. They had an acoustic artist playing that evening who was phenomenal. If you go there on a different day with different staff, I'm sure you'd have a great time. But for the price and ambiance, we really expected better service.

I ordered a Borgona, fruit puree juices mix with Sprite. Never had one, but sounded really good. It came and it was delicious and fruity for a mocktail. We ordered a shrimp ceviche and octopus skewers to start out with. The Shrimp Ceviche was very delicious and it was something that I was very happy to share it with my friends. It was a big portion of shrimp cocktail with salsa on the bottom and these large sized blue chips. It was so good that we ate it quickly. Octopus skewers was a tad charred. Yet very delicious especially if you eat it with the pineapple together. Brings out the flavor of the pineapples quite well. We ordered the Pork Belly Tacos and Mole Shrimp Tacos which came in 3. I absolutely loved street tacos filled with good fresh ingredients. And both of these hot the spot. The pork belly was an absolute great flavor of the pork belly. The Shrimp was delicious. Cook perfectly and easy to devour quickly. DeFuego Nachos had Jalapenos. But wasn't listed. The nachos were delicious and it was quickly devoured. Wings came in 4 wings with garlic parmesan with carrots and celery and ranch on the platter. Heavily garlic on the wings yet very delicious. Half wedge salad was a surprise how much there is in the salad. A lot of fresh veggies there with cherry tomatoes and sliced radishes in it. I ordered 2 things and both came out wrong. Our waitress spoke very loudly and we could hear her having long personal conversations with people a couple tables away from us for 10+ minutes at a time, several times. While we waited for her, we ran out of water a few times and I had to ask for more. It was over an hour before our order was even taken. We did flag her down to order an appetizer, brussel sprouts with cheese on the side due to a dairy allergy, but... the sprouts came out with cheese on them. They corrected this fairly promptly, but then we sat for another 45 minutes before our order was actually taken. I ordered a steak as "somewhere between medium & medium well" and she correctly repeated my order back to me "medium/medium well." When the steak came out, it was WELL well done. Like, burnt. I wanted to send it back, but I didn't want to deal with the embarrassment or have to wait even longer for food. We were about an hour & 45 minutes into dinner by the time we got our food. I was so disappointed! I also wanted to get dessert to celebrate the occasion but the service was SO slow that we had to cancel our after-dinner plans. We ordered it anyway & requested the check promptly, giving up on our plans for the rest of the evening. We were only a party of 2, we arrived early for our reservation, & we watched several larger parties come and go while we waited for our order to even be taken. It was a Wednesday night and not overly busy, there were several empty tables, so I'm not sure what the hold up was. We were also seated at an odd table next to the kitchen with a small divider between us and the staff. It was noisy and I even heard 2 staff members exchange a joke about how someone else had left & said they'd never come back. They laughed about it. I wish I had the guts those people had to get up & leave! I've never once left less than a 20% tip and felt immense guilt not tipping well, but after experiencing the poor service then also hearing the staff blatantly acknowledge it & not care.... I was appalled. The Hilton bought the hotel attached to De Fuego and I'm shocked. This was a Monarch hotel before and I'd assume that the Hilton's standards would be higher but the service and quality here have tanked hopelessly low since the acquisition. I had a similar experience at The Underground before it closed. I've learned my lesson & won't come here for a special occasion again.

We ordered a cocktail, the bruschetta appetizer, and then a burger, the king salmon and a plate of chicken pasta in white sauce for the little one. Everything took forever to come out (even the drink), nobody came out to check or refill waters in the 90 minutes we were there. Cocktail (Spring Break) - 5/5 great! Bruschetta - 3/5. Generally good but the bread was carbonized and as hard as a rock. Burger + fries - 3/5. Burger looked sad but was actually pretty tasty, if a little overcooked. Fries looked great (hand cut) but upon us closer inspection in the low light, you could see they were 50% those tiny peel pieces that get burned when frying. Guys! You are supposed to take those pieces out! Salmon - 3/5. Kind of... fine. A little fishy, not really what i expect for King salmon. Chicken pasta for toddler - 4/5. Actually this was delicious (if a bit overcooked) and it will my leftover lunch (toddler didn't eat it but that isn't the pasta's fault). Total bill for everyone, with tip: $126 So pretty mediocre food, downright bad service, and premium pricing. It's a pass from me!
