Clearly I will have to come try the regular food at some point, based on the other reviews. I'm going to leave out my experience with the food during nacho week considering it was an event and not their normal. But I did try their Jungle Bird slushie and I really enjoyed it. The flavor was perfect and I enjoyed drinking it on a warm summer evening. The service was good, and the server even let me taste the slushie before ordering since I was between a couple things. Someday I'll have to come back and try their regular food, but in terms of a place to grab a drink, I'd come back. read more

Lack luster. We've drive by this place many times and decided to swing by. I saw a couple things on the menu that sounded good. After going to yelp and seeing photos of the wedge and the potato skins, I decided to scratch those off of my list. Pretzel sticks with cheese sauce can be a simple go-to for an appetizer. The bartenders are friendly and cordial. As with any bar when it gets busy, you just have to wait your turn. The bartender is going as fast as they can and serve you as quickly as possible. Being a good human, and being patient while they're doing their best. But from the bartenders, I've never seen anything other than fun conversation, kindness, and like I said, they're doing their best to help everybody as quickly as possible. The drinks are imaginative, fun, but most of all delicious and actually have booze in them. Unlike a lot of Portland Instagrammable cocktails made for looks and not taste. There's a rotating menu of both hot and cold cocktails to choose from. The bloody Mary's are always going to be different no matter what bar you go to, but I happen to really like these and order them regularly. This summer they have had weekly slushes that are always fun to try. The bartender is nice and always offer samples of the new flavors. They have a wide selection of beers on tap, and of course, all the usual liquors if you're more of a shot person. I've tried almost everything on their brunch menu and never had something I didn't like . The chilaquiles are delicious maybe too spicy for some people but just the way I like them. The biscuits and gravy are made with local Otto's sausage.... If you know you know. Me personally I like a sausage gravy that's meaty and not just watery gravy with a couple crumbs of sausage in it. This sausage gravy never disappoints.. I'm also a huge fan of their breakfast enchiladas. It's a huge portion. I'm a big eater and I still can't ever finish it all. While I personally have never had the pancakes they must be delicious because I always see stacks of them being brought out of the kitchen to other hungry customers. Unlike most any sports bar that you will find in Portland you actually get great food here. The kitchen staff are fast and friendly. They are working nonstop to get people's orders out as quickly as they can. Whenever they have a spare moment, they always share a smile. I appreciate the time and attention they put into the food that they're making. You can tell that they care about what they are doing. The customers are a great diverse group of Sellwood locals and people that are just passing through. Young people, old people, single people, families with kids, straight people, gay people, bi people, non-binary people... just people. Everyone is welcome and I've never seen anyone treated badly and like I said I'm there very frequently. It's been fun over the past 2+ years to get to know a lot of of the regulars, many of them have become friends, and others I only see at Moreland Alehouse, but they are always kind and friendly. As far as it being a sports bar, there are a bazillion televisions in there with all of the games going. It's a fun atmosphere, a great place to go if you want to have a good time. I wouldn't refer to it as a quiet family restaurant, even though a lot of families go there, it is a sports bar, we are there to cheer on our favorite teams. I wouldn't call it rowdy, but I would call it a great time. I am at Moreland Alehouse several times weekly and have been since May of 2022. I've never had a bad experience there. I am a gay man. I am a black man, and I have never received anything other than kindness, inclusion, I always have a good time. I'm always laughing with the staff and the other customers. It's one of my favorite bars in Sellwood and my number one favorite sports bar in Southeast Portland! I'm happy this bar exists in my neighborhood, I'm thankful for all of the staff that works there. I was excited they allowed minors so I could watch football with my son. Unfortunately my son accidentally set off my car alarm twice and the bartender announced "whose car alarm is going off! Anybody!?!?" I raised my hand. My son came back inside embarrassed and didn't want to apologize to the bartender because he was so embarrassed. I'm glad my son declined to apologize because her response to my apology felt very unkind and passive aggressive. Can't imagine what she would've said to my son if he decided to apologize. What a surprise! Came here for Nacho Week, and as I walk thru the door, I see a familiar face behind the bar! Didn't know Ben owned this place until I came thru, and I'm glad I did! Ben was great, and my order came out quickly. The nachos were good, but really what sealed the deal was the meat! It had great flavor, and it was obvious it wasn't out of a can or had been sitting all day. The nacho's had a little kick to them as well, which was awesome. The portion size was great, I felt like I got a great deal for my money. The bar had a good atmosphere, everything was clean and it was well staffed. An additional kicker, they carry Caldera Root Beer, which is absolutely one of the best root beers out there! read more

When we walked in we were really surprised by two things. It is really dark in there and they seem to have a large quantity of lottery machines. However, we were hungry and it was raining outside so we gave it a shot. Once again, you cannot judge a book by its cover because everything about this place exceeded our expectations. Upon sitting down the bartender immediately greeted us and took our drink orders. He was very friendly and seemed cut from the mold of Sam from Cheers. I had the Otto Dog with tater tot's. It was solid. I felt there was a bit too much bun for the dog but it was cooked perfectly and everything served on top of it tasted incredible. My fiancé and I came to Portland to visit some family. We needed a place to watch our college team's football game and this sports bar is where we were taken to. The bar has that classic sports bar aesthetic while feeling nicer than your average college sports bar, very clean, and well kept. I got a rum and coke which was the perfect strength. My fiancé got some beers which he enjoyed as well. We ended up ordering some food. In all, we got the chicken satay sandwich, the pulled pork sandwich, and the chicken tenders appetizer. Everyone was super happy with their food, especially for a bar. The ranch that went with the fries was great as well. The staff were very friendly and it wasn't too busy. Great sports bar with a fun and engaging staff, and customers that keep the atmosphere fun. Never had a bad experience, family friendly and respectful of all the letters in the alphabet. Good portion sizes, thoughtfully prepared food, and a whole bunch of screens with all the games playing. The summer menu drink menu is amazing with weekly slushy specials that actually have booze in them unlike the usual Portland slushies that are basically just koolaid. 10/02/2021: 4.50 out of 5 - Came here after a Saturday run with my group. Everyone was in agreement in trying a new place. We were able to sit inside for brunch. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much. Moreso, after getting my cup of coffee. However! When the food came out out, we were all pleasantly surprised with the food. It all looked nicely cooked, plated well, and most importantly, it was VERY TASTY! Great prices for the most part, too! The service at the Moreland Ale House was just spot on. Attentive, not intrusive, but all-around friendly service staff. Moreland Ale House is spacious and very clean. I am picky establishment person when it comes to cleanliness, but very big on looking at the vents of a place. Despite the coffee needing to be better (maybe I should have had a breakfast beer ), everything else under the roof made it worth the visit. I used to live in Sellwood, just a rock's throw away from this spot. I'm not sure, but I think this used to be an old dive, and the business may have changed hands since we last had a visit. If it did change hands, the owners only changed a thing. It used to be a neighborhood dive, and it still is. There's a pac-man machine in one corner. Sticky tables with banged up chairs probably still from the nineties or even beyond. If you cleaned it from top to bottom, the smell of pine-sol would not in a thousand years be able to make a dent in the sugar and alcohol of 500,000 beers worth or more of slosh in the floors. But one previous thing HAS changed, my friends. And that is the kitchen scratch-made menu. They don't have much, but what they do have is all house engineered, from the salad dressings to the house-cut fries. We came for dinner, which is a couple salads (including wedge-cut iceberg with bacon and your choice of dressing) a smattering of sandwiches (including grilled chicken with all the fix-ins) and of course the burgers (house-made patties with grilled bacon and cheddar cheese with a cherry pepper garnish). I hear they have a vegetarian option, too. I found my fries to be dried out, but the burger I ordered made up for it. The true star of the show here, though, seems to be brunch. If you make it in on a weekend a little late to grab some hair of the dog, I hear they have great bloody Marys and I'd like to try the hollandaise. Also, they seem to be inclusive for a dive bar, and they were decorated for Pride with a huge rainbow banner behind the back of the bar. Check out their extensive draught list before you take yourself up to the counter to order, and remember to leave your tab open for another round. read more

I visited Moreland Ale House after a group run for brunch and it did not disappoint. For this spot, there is neighborhood and street parking. The brunch menu mostly consisted of egg centric dishes which I was not in the mood for so I got their french toast. I liked the french toast. It had a lot of cinnamon in it, consisted of multiple small slices, and was unpretentious which was refreshing. I agree that this is a bit of a dive bar but it's a nice one. We love everything about this place except the hashbrowns are hands down the WORST we've ever had! They must cook them early in the morning and keep them under a warmer. They are cold, hard and dry. Makes the meal entirely unenjoyable. We have tried them nearly ten times, EVERY time they are completely inedible. How do they not see the entire hashbrown left on the plate? Nice finish on the sammies with long skewered cherry pepper and good dill slices. Found the peanut sauce on the chicken satay sando a little too sweet but portion sizes are great, with 2 larger pieces of chix and pickled onions on a brioche bun, but are you sure that was a brioche? 3 Stars: --Server while there, available, and gets the job done but just kinda disassociated with clientele, making for a less comfortable, less welcome feeling; doesn't seem to enjoy serving, no happy aura, smile, or offer tasters if you have questions about taps. We asked for 3 more waters, server walked off without really acknowledging request, but then returned with them...okay, well thank you. --$9 for an Old Overholt ($20 cheaper rye) Old Fashioned that was a weaker poor --TVs are not situated well for the non-giraffe crowd so game watching comes with a kink in your neck. How can you do that in a burger dependant joint? It's like the foundation of their menu. They come in stacked high. Too much onion and tomatoes that were not ready. Who like a green red tomatoe slices on their burgers? The fries were cold like they have been sitti g around. I could have forgiven it but the tater tots on the other plate were also room temp and stale. Spring rolls for apps? Frozen. Not a lot of flavor along with a sauce that was clearly watered down and flavorless. I guess there are other options but these two were less than average. A good place for beers and drinks. Awesome neighborhood pub with good burgers, chicken sandwiches, and tots. When my wife and I want a respectably yummy burger and fries with generous portions at a reasonable price, Moreland Ale House hits the spot. I'd order a burger from them over most places because the prices and value are appropriate compared to what feels like a lot of overpriced and mediocre options saturating the local market right now. Service is always friendly and decently timed. The atmosphere has a fun local vibe which is comfortable. They really are a great neighborhood pub that feels like it could be a Cheers in Portland. Came here for burger week. It took two rounds because they sold out by the end of the evening (which makes sense because they have a bit more of a specialized one). They saved me when I came in the second time. I barely missed em! Owner was super nice and took the time to tell me about some of their cooking processes (I cook a lot myself so was interested). Bartender Christian was super friendly and still had a smile even after the crazy week. You can tell they were working hard today. Okay the burger. I have had 13 burgers this week and this was my in my top 3. Tied for number 1 actually. The only one I ate in it's entirely. (There were a lot to try so I only ate half or a quarter of each). You really can't go wrong with carmelized onions and Brie cheese. The meat itself was really good! The brioche bun they had was also a good choice! They also make their own French fries in house and they were pretty delicious too. I only tried one because I don't eat fries anymore, but for those of you that do. Don't skip on them. :) Establishment was pretty clean and it wasn't crazy crowded when I hopped in there! Would return again! read more
