Worst experience I have ever had with a small business. STAY AWAY because the owner is the problem. I will actively tell anyone to stay away from this business. We had a full set of dining room chairs that needed full upholstery replaced. When they got it right I would actually recommend their work since I am happy with it but the owner's DISHONESTY and PETTINESS has me fuming. Quotes from the owner: "well if I didn't tell you, you wouldn't have noticed." When they changed the fabric from an expensive krypton, that we provided, to a cheap cotton that was a perfect color match. The owner insisted that the fabric they used was correct regardless of what we said, only after seeing a finished chair did she actually see it was wrong. Though never, I mean never, mention any sorrow for the mistake or even acknowledge the mistake rather just blamed it on her workers. Quotes continued: "I never met someone as uncivil as you" this was directed at me when I disagreed with her price increase due to her mistake. I actually paid slightly more than the original amount so you can see the sher pettiness of the owner. I know she will respond to my review because she has to have the last word, make your own assumptions on what kind of person who always has to have the last word, is always right, and down right rude to everyone. read more

Had a great experience working with BJ and the crew. Have a sectional with a lounger and was convinced that it had a broken frame or springs as it drooped in the back when sitting on it. Sent BJ a photo and she suggested it was probably just the cushion that had compacted. BJ assisted me with my order and it was great working with her because she is reliable, knowledgeable and helpful. BJ and I agreed for me to drop off the chairs/fabric and pick up the chairs on Saturday because I could not leave work during the week day. The Upholstery shop upholstered beautifully my two folding chairs and replaced the seat's foam with new foam. The fabric was provided by me, which I purchased at Calico. The left over fabric was given back to me and I can even make a pillow from the fabric, which The Upholstery shop can do. This business has a new owner... while the quality of the upholstery work was fantastic the pillows are flat and look silly!! The new owner is overwhelmed and does not seem to have design experience. Customer service and interaction are not her strong suit. When I picked up my pillows I could tell they were much too flat. I took them home to try. They were ridiculously soft and looked flat particularly for 24" size! I took pictures and sent a message with the pictures asking that they just have more down inserted. She refused to even consider doing this except for a huge charge. These pillows already cost $94 each and I brought the fabrics and most of the in! I sent a follow up message and have never received a response!! Suggest hiring someone with customer service skills!! One day later- The power of social media!!! I had not heard from this owner for many months until I posted this review!!! Thank you Bj for a response but just one clarification, I did not ask for anything free only to add more stuffing to your inserts. I had no problem paying for the work your company provided. I don't usually write reviews but thought I'd write one after getting multiple pieces reupholstered over the past year and a half or so. We started with a sofa and love seat that I wanted to match closely with new curtains. Having never upholstered anything before, I was wary but their workmanship was fantastic. The tacks and stitching lined up perfectly and our friends thought we'd bought brand new sofas and had a designer match all the colors! So I went a bit crazy and had 6 dining chairs and an Ethan Allen sofa redone as well. Recently I also got a small custom ottoman built and upholstered by them. BJ was great in helping pick out fabrics and in working around my tight schedule to deliver stuff! It sometimes takes a day or two to get a response to a voicemail but I found along the way that email, particularly with photos and measurements, gets a faster response. I almost forgot - they noticed a crack in the frame of the Ethan Allen when they removed the fabric, sent me a photo of it right away and fixed it as part of the job without charging extra! The shop is small and they seem to be quite busy but the work and service are outstanding. This was my experience in dealing with The Upholstery Shop. I first heard of this business from a glowing write-up in Diablo magazine a long time ago. I had saved the article since good craftsman are hard to find and I wanted to be sure to work with such a finely admired business. Clearly, the ownership has changed since the article was written. I originally contacted The Upholstery Shop in May of this year. We communicated via email about my project. I then made an appointment to visit the shop in July. I spent a couple of hours of time at the business as BJ had several clients she was attending to all at the same time. She committed to getting me a quote and an amount of material needed for my project by the end of business that day (she indicated she was heading out for a 2 week vacation the next day). I received nothing from her that day (which seemed odd as we had previously communicated via email) but I just chalked it up to being busy getting ready for vacation. After 2 weeks I sent her an email welcoming her home from her vacation and once again requesting information about my project. I heard nothing. I then called the business. After a few more weeks of waiting for any communication in return, I moved on. If it was this difficult to get a quote and an estimate of the amount of material needed......what would working on the actual chair entail? BJ was either not interested in my project (which is fine...just say so) or I have no idea what (since she never communicated with me I honestly have no idea what happened). To this day (it is October), I have not heard a word via email or by phone about my project. Bottom line: For those of you, like myself, who have heard stellar things about The Upholstery Shop - there seems to have been a change in the ownership. A friend of mine recommended the Upholstery Shop to me and she told me they did quality work. She underestimated their abilities. I took my loveseat in to be recovered, and the owner worked with me first in style and secondly in doing a fabulous job recovering the love seat. We had some fabric left over from when we had it done originally and she was able to reuse a significant part of the fabric, which lowered the cost. Her design ideas were great And the loveseat turned out so well, that I then went ahead and had the couch recovered. We replaced the cushions on the couch and it is now so comfortable I love it, and I can barely get the cat off it (you've heard the old adage: if you want the best seat in the house, move the cat). I actually found Rod and the upholstery shop via Yelp and would like other yelpers to find them as well... They were exceptional at reupholstering a pair of chairs that had been passed down several times already and needed a new life. I sent pictures to Rod along with measurements and he provided estimates based on a medium priced level of fabric so I could make a choice before coming into his shop. Tip: Plan to make an appointment to go to the shop and have time for perusing fabrics, and bring the ones you like home, or for a fee bring your own. I have to say Rod was extremely helpful explaining how the various fabrics would hold up or work on the type of furniture being worked with and the various edgings needed for the job. Both chairs were gorgeous when completed and the fabrics we selected with Rod's help came out and held up exactly as described! I purchased the fabric elsewhere (although Rod does have a good selection), and Rod and his staff did a stellar job not only doing the upholstery, but also cleaning up and oiling the antique wood. We had a club chair cushion that needed recovering with extra fabric we provided. We met B.J. and upon examining under the cushion cover realized the interior container for the feathers was ripped and feathers were loose. We did not want to completely reconstruct the cushion, so B.J. suggested patching the interior container and adding some feathers along with recovering the cushion. We had a short time-frame (an upcoming party) and B.J. slotted our work in quickly and completed sooner than we expected. The finished product is superb - flawless attention was paid to matching the placement of the pattern on the cushion so it exactly matches a companion chair. In addition, the price was reasonable.
