Ask the Community - The V Shop

How much does a smog check cost?

Hello there! I'm sorry but we don't do smog/DEQ testing at our facility. Those can be done at DEQTOO or DEQ stations. Hope that helps.

Do you offer transmission fluid changes for a 2007 Volvo S80 V8 with the Aisin tf80sc transmission, and if so how much would that cost?

Hello Andrew, That service would run $310 for your vehicle. Right now we are taking appointments for this Thursday the 16th or later. If you would like to get on our schedule, please call the shop at 503-808-9257.… Read more

I also added a comprehensive exam (which they offered at a discounted rate) for them to look at my car as a whole and to let me know what things might need repair now and in the near future. They were able to see my car within a week of me reaching out for an appt, and they only kept my car for ~5 hours. They tried everything they could to find the source of my leak, but when they couldn't, they referred me to Liberty Water Leak, who was fantastic and found the sources of my leak and water damage within a few hours. With the comprehensive exam, they listed each item that needed repair and were not pushy AT ALL. They also answered all of my questions, yes... even the dumb ones. There was an oversight where my wiper cowlings were not installed correctly, so I did leave an honest review on SureCritic saying that I wasn't sure if I'd trust them with further repairs due to that mistake. Within a week of posting that review, the shop called me to apologize and discuss what happened. On top of that, they refunded me my entire bill. I understand now why Tom Dwyer Auto has such good reviews-- They genuinely care about their customers and producing quality work. I am grateful to have been treated with respect, not taken advantage of as a female, and for their determination to correct the mistakes made. Thank you again!

The issue is how the pricing was handled. I was quoted roughly $3,600 for the repair. Before approving it, I had a detailed conversation with the owner about whether the repair made sense given the car's age and mileage. We discussed risks, costs, and whether it was worth doing. At no point during that conversation was it mentioned that a separate diagnostic fee would be added on top of the quoted repair. The final bill came to just over $4,100, including an additional diagnostic charge that was never clearly disclosed. I did approve other add-on work, but the diagnostic fee was not part of the original discussion or expectation. When a customer is explicitly asking whether a repair is financially worth doing, that is exactly when full pricing transparency matters most. I followed up afterward and asked to speak with the owner and gave them time to respond, but did not receive a return call. I've brought multiple cars here in the past, which is why I trusted them with this job. Unfortunately, this experience makes that trust harder to justify going forward.

All these problems surfaced after the snowfall not too long ago. Jason and team were diligent with their inspection and unfortunately it turns out I have transmission problems. I've elected to sell my vehicle instead of going ahead with a repair. Despite this I had a great experience. It's on the street somewhere, nothing left, so we have no idea what happened...a rodent? Bad belt? Bad luck? Who knows. I don't drive this car much, so even though it had been two years, it was only about 6k miles. I brought it to them (limped in) and left it overnight since it was after hours. They agreed that they couldn't tell why it failed, but had a new alternator belt on it later that day. When I went to pick it up, I pulled out my credit card. He said "nope" and just shook my hand. It wasn't a lot of miles, but it had been two years, they had no belt to inspect and they still fully covered the work. I've never worked with an auto shop like that. If your biggest concern when choosing a shop is trust, these are your guys.
