I found Tom Dwyer Auto via raving reviews on Reddit and decided to give them a shot to try to diagnose the source of my water leak. I also added a comprehensive exam (which they offered at a discounted rate) for them to look at my car as a whole and to let me know what things might need repair now and in the near future. They were able to see my car within a week of me reaching out for an appt, and they only kept my car for ~5 hours. They tried everything they could to find the source of my leak, but when they couldn't, they referred me to Liberty Water Leak, who was fantastic and found the sources of my leak and water damage within a few hours. With the comprehensive exam, they listed each item that needed repair and were not pushy AT ALL. They also answered all of my questions, yes... even the dumb ones. There was an oversight where my wiper cowlings were not installed correctly, so I did leave an honest review on SureCritic saying that I wasn't sure if I'd trust them with further repairs due to that mistake. Within a week of posting that review, the shop called me to apologize and discuss what happened. On top of that, they refunded me my entire bill. I understand now why Tom Dwyer Auto has such good reviews-- They genuinely care about their customers and producing quality work. Did not want to service my car because apparently "it's too rusty underneath." Wasted my time. Edit: To the response-- It was for a simple oil change and check up. If a car mechanic company can't do an oil change or check up like yours, there's something wrong. Trust has been already ruined, and my time has already been wasted. These guys are great and were my family's go-to spot for auto repair until the COVID19 Pandemic. Our classic 1998 Honda Civic was well taken care of from roughly 2013-2018. We stayed close to home for everything from 3.2020-10.2022 due to the Pandemic. In 2018, they were still doing pre-purchase diagnosis of used cars, and they helped clear my 2007 Honda Fit! I am a new customer to Tom Dwyer and came here after trying some other places in the Portland area with not-great results. I have only good things to say about my experience with this company. They took care of some routine maintenance items, let me know about one thing that it might be time to fix before it caused a problem, and did NOT try to up-sell me on anything, which was refreshing. I also had a problem with a check-engine light and they took it step by step, checking everything thoroughly until they were able to isolate and fix the problem. Given how much time they had to spend on this, and what I spent at other places without getting a lasting fix, I feel that the price was extremely fair. I will absolutely be going back there for both routine maintenance and more major issues. read more

Place is extremely shady if you can't already tell from the outside but was referred here by am associate who's probably been gouged by Tom Dwyer for years. Gave me a quote when I dropped it off for power steering and an oil leak for $450 and said best case maybe one of those charges would come off or that would be the max with labor. When I came to pick it up after they said it would be around the $3k mark to fix with labor he tried to charge me $450 and pulled out the fine print...classic slime ball mechanic move. IMPRESSED......I have never used your services but came across a forum looking up something for my truck,I read most of the reviews here and your responses and the "old car" link and message about the 1964 Lemans. I can see how it would look to others seeing it in the bay ,yet your policy of no. My husb and I work on our vehicles ourselves & growing up with a dad,uncles doing own work I see all that your saying re: this issue and why. If your equipped & plan on doing older vehicle work that's fine but there is cost & constant repair if their not kept up. It would not be condusive business wise for you to do that if you want to keep good business and the ongoing"background work to look for parts/seals et for older vehicles. My husb & I both drive vintage trucks mine 48 ford,him 48 Dodge.They are mod/mix but there are various headaches and such we work with when something needs care. But we are willing to do that work & not business owners and don't need constant flow of business to worry about. Most have wonderful things to say about you & the shop. YOu respond as needed and respectfully & with some refund if meets criteria. That says alot in this day and age, most shops are rough, rude or just "period, that's that'. I took my new/used Mini Cooper in for an assessment at this shop because my usual mechanic was crazy busy. The car was occasionally putting out a small amount of smoke from under the hood and not holding coolant, plus a sensor light was on. The service techs were extremely kind with good communication and I really appreciated their frankness. The work estimate came out to $3500 for all the repairs. I did not have them do the work, and my usual mechanic thought they might have overinflated the issues found. When I took it to my usual mechanic he found they did NOT inflate the issues. He said everything they reported was accurate, and though this mechanic I've been happily using for the past decade charges significantly less, Tom Dwyer's was honest with me and sent up zero red flags. They are a much bigger shop with more overhead and they only use official Mini factory parts, whereas my trusted mechanic differs on these points, so their 5x higher quote is reflective of these differences. I chose four stars because the estimate was cost prohibitive and I can't attest to their repair work, but I was happy with my experience at their shop. read more

We know very little about cars or car maintenance, so it was pretty gross to feel like we might be taken advantage of. Once we found Tom Dwyer, we've never looked back. They've probably been servicing our vehicles for 8 years or so, and we trust them to always level with us about what should be done, what's wise to do now (or soon), and what can be put off. They're fantastic, and we're happy to be loyal customers. If you're within any reasonable range, go to them and trust the care of your vehicles to them. I've been driving for nearly 50 years. During that time, I've taken my cars for service to various auto shops and dealers in Los Angeles, where I used to live, and in the Portland metro area since 1985. Without a doubt, Tom Dwyer Automotive is the best - the best, Jerry! - repair shop I've ever experienced. (And no, I'm not a friend or relative of the owner). I found TDA through a Google search and they got nearly 5-star reviews across the board. No wonder: their service and follow-up are extraordinary! I first called them on Sept. 3 to set up an appointment for the following week to check the brakes on our 2003 Camry. They were spongy and squealing, and I knew they needed replacement. I talked to Perry, one of their services advisors, over the phone. They did a thorough inspection for the brakes and some other maintenance, and he quoted me a price which seemed reasonable. After they did the work and I picked up my car, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the actual price was $80 less than the quote! Who does that? More importantly, they do extraordinary follow-up with personal notes in the mail, newsletters and phone calls. Yesterday I received a call from Charles, their marketing manager, informing me that they'll donate to a Portland charity because of a referral I gave them. Who does that? Suffice to say, they've earned my business for the long haul. You shouldn't waste your time getting estimates from dealers or other auto shops. They won't match Tom Dwyer for quality work, fair pricing, community outreach or after-service follow up. Keep up the good work! read more

(I reported it for privacy violations so Yelp might remove it). That's so unprofessional, yet consistent with my experience. Why does the owner argue with everyone who had a bad experience? He could offer to do better, or even just apologize. He could learn from the comments and not make the same mistakes. Instead, the customer is the unreasonable one. There's no point in refuting his errors. You can see from his online behavior just what kind of operation this is. ****ORIGINAL POST**** They tried to upcharge me so much that they failed the "wife test", meaning I would not send my wife (who doesn't do much auto maintenance herself) to them without me being there. She wouldn't know that they're trying to rip her off. Usually I do my own maintenance, but I'm a white-collar worker not a gearhead. This time, I thought I had a problem that was too big for me. I took it to Tom Dwyer, and it turned out to be something else that was easy to fix. They "recommended" $1200 to fix the problem, and also replace other parts that weren't broken, and then do routine maintenance that wasn't even due yet! When I asked them to just fix the broken part, they said they wouldn't "waranty" the work unless I did the whole enchilada. I did the minimum anyway, and they still tacked on other charges that I refused to pay. They were super defensive when I asked them to just fix the problem. The worst part was that, when I got home and checked the work, they had done such a lazy job that I ended up re-doing the work myself. I ended up fixing an adjacent part that they didn't touch but which would have caused the problem to recur. It took ~40 min of my time and only cost me $40 in parts from Amazon. My car runs much better now that I fixed their work. I would have let that slide and just grumbled to myself and neighbors about it, but they kept sending me "feedback" cards in the mail. Now, I receive something every other week from them. Annoyingly, their feedback cards all include a number, written in pen, so clearly they were trying to track their "annonymous" feedback. You don't need this headache. Find a better mechanic. read more

*Edited based on company's response* Lie #1 - I called at 9am, it was not the end of the day. Lie #2 - There was no mention of mobile service not being something that was available, I was going to drive my car to their location after restarting my battery so I didn't ask for or need mobile service. I was literally told they could schedule me for an appointment in two weeks and they wouldn't even consider a 5 minute repair. Lie #3 - The name of the "trusted mechanic" I was given was Les Schwab... okay. Lol. Since when does les schwab offer mobile services? Lie #4 - There was no consideration of making an exception and having me come by and tightening the connection, because it was an immediate no and less than 90 second phone call. They didn't even take my information down. Not surprising their entire response was a lie about our interaction considering how I was treated in my initial contact. I called in to ask if I could stop by and get the connection on my battery checked and tightened as i was recently stranded about 5 minutes away with a dead battery and got a jump to restart it from a friend. This is something that could take them less than 5 minutes to do and they asked if I wanted to make an appointment in two weeks to come back which made no sense. The man on the phone was short, gruff, and definitely had that typical "talking to a woman who knows nothing about cars" attitude. I could tell he just wanted to be off the phone call and could care less about someone nearby with a dead car battery/loose connection. Why am I updating my review from 2007? Do I have anything new or crazy innovative to say about the quality of service I receive from Tom Dwyer's shop? No. But i have been taking my car here for oil changes, minor routine maintenance and the like (and even one admittedly so-dumb-I-won't-even-say-for-fear-of-losing-my-man-card visit) and every time, like clockwork, they do a great job. The service is friendly, they're honest, and in the end, while I may pay a bit more than the bargain basement fixit and lube joints, I get what I pay for. And when it comes to such a large investment like my car, why would I cheap out on the key maintenance that keeps it from breaking down, screwing up or dying an early death? Plus, I have never been upsold on anything. Nothing irritates me more than the "you need a new air filter" pitch. So yes, these guys deserve a refreshed 5-star rating from me. I'll be honest, I hate the hell out of car maintenance. Even an oil change tends to have me seeing red because I know every nickel I spend on my car is a nickel swirling into what seems to be a neverending black hole of...well, car maintenance. So for a number of years (I am too horrified to admit just how many) I neglected my poor lil' Focus. And then I straight up stop driving and adopted the popular PDX lifestyle of biking for just about a year so there she sat. Neglected, ignored. But when the weather took a turn for the crappy, I turned to my loyal steel steed and worked she did! But the years of neglect had come home to roost in the form of hella dash lights and the requirement to disconnect my battery when I parked it for the day. I had Tom Dwyer bookmarked for at least a solid 2 years with the intent of eventually coming here. Of course what spurred me was the need for new tags, and the sinking feeling my car wouldn't pass DEQ without some help. Again with that whole hating car maintenance attitude I still dilly dallied but finally called a week ago to schedule an appointment. Dean was the guy I talked to and he was friendly, thorough and quick to get me in. And was also understanding that the day I was to bring it in, was OF COURSE, Snowmageddon. I waited till the evening when it wasn't so icey and limped the poor lil' Focus to drop it off. Dean called me the next morning and started with something you never hear - "Are you sitting down?" I wasn't, but told him to lay it on me anyways. I won't list the boring specifics but DAMN, I was really stupid to have waited so long to get the car checked out. He told me all the things that needed fixing and dollar signs were flashy before my eyes in the bad way. He asked me if I was going to drive this car for awhile, or was looking to buy a new one sooner or later. Considering I intend to drive this thing into the ground, I reviewed with him what did and did not need fixing. Whilst still spendy, I viewed it as penance for my laziness and okayed the needed fixes. I was pleasantly shocked when I received a call late Thursday saying my car was all ready for pick up. The amount of work they did in basically 3 days was awesome, especially since I had been expecting for sans car for at least a week. I picked her up today, paid my tiny fortune, and proceeded to get the girl all legal-like for driving. It's kind of a relief to know my car isn't going to fall apart anytime soon now. Is it the cheapest? Nope. But I FIRMLY believe you get what you pay for and here you get expert advice and service, and no shenanigans I've ran into at other mechanics. They don't try any scare tactics like "OMG your brakes are going to fail, we can't legally let you leave the lot" LOOKING AT YOU MIDAS (and guess what, my brakes were fine, jerks). Now that I've ponied up to get the thing running, I'll be using this place for all my car needs. But hopefully I won't see y'all too soon. read more
