Brint and David deserve more than 5 stars! We'd had our oil changed at a dealer before starting our journey from Washington to California, but the oil warning light came on in Portland. Lucky for us, we found Pacific Car Care. Brint quickly diagnosed the problem (the drain cap hadn't been tightened), added oil and even checked our tires and fluids, and we were on our way. Car broke down and after 2 hours finally got a helpful tow truck driver who is also a mechanic, and immediately deduced the problem, which ended up being something I had already taken mental note of a long time ago. We get to Pacific Car Care because it was closest, and the old guy at the register was rude right off the bat, cut me off mid explanation, wasn't speaking to me about what I said the problem was, and insisted they would need to do a diagnostic instead of just telling me if my problem was one that could be fixed. Other reviews I saw already said they try to force diagnostic checks when unneeded, so this further solidified my negative feelings about this place. tldr: don't come here unless you have no other option and don't mind being charged FAR more than you should read more

I brought my Lexus RX 450h in for a brake issue. The shop correctly diagnosed a known ABS actuator/pump failure and completed the repair. The work itself appears solid. The issue is how the pricing was handled. I was quoted roughly $3,600 for the repair. Before approving it, I had a detailed conversation with the owner about whether the repair made sense given the car's age and mileage. We discussed risks, costs, and whether it was worth doing. At no point during that conversation was it mentioned that a separate diagnostic fee would be added on top of the quoted repair. The final bill came to just over $4,100, including an additional diagnostic charge that was never clearly disclosed. I did approve other add-on work, but the diagnostic fee was not part of the original discussion or expectation. When a customer is explicitly asking whether a repair is financially worth doing, that is exactly when full pricing transparency matters most. I followed up afterward and asked to speak with the owner and gave them time to respond, but did not receive a return call. I've brought multiple cars here in the past, which is why I trusted them with this job. Unfortunately, this experience makes that trust harder to justify going forward. read more

I brought my car in for a repair service because my trunk isn't opening in the cold weather. David was excellent at helping me and when I shared a bulletin from the dealership and explained the trouble I was having in understanding where to take my car. David called the dealership, provided the vin and asked questions that I wouldn't have known to ask. I live close by. Close enough to walk home when I have work done. I began having all of my work done there a few years ago. I have a very straight 20-year-old Ford F150 FX4 the I'm very attached to. With their work I've kept the truck like new for about $30K less than it would cost me to replace it with something I'd like as much. The first time I used them I had them replace the entire rear end and axle from lug nut to lug nut. It wasn't cheap, but it was fair. I've had them upgrade the brakes including drilled and slotted rotors and better calipers. I put money into this truck because I really enjoy this truck, and the money I've put in it has kept it running and driving like a new truck. They have since rebuilt the entire suspension and performed all of my maintenance. I can't say enough about the shop's competence and honesty. I always recommend them to friends. read more

They also gave me over $2000 worth of recommendations. I understand their job is to sell and make money. I just felt like there was way too much of that, and less good solid advice. Ken the owner is a wonderful and intelligent man who knows what he's doing & takes care of his customers. On a road trip across the country and needed new injection coils & spark plugs, came in at 1pm and he had me sorted out and everything taken care of by 5:30, even checked over some other issues and offered me advice on all the other things wrong with my old Ford. Took off some rusty bolts for me as an added bonus so i could fix the tire hoist myself. Highly recommend, can't thank him enough. read more

This has become my go to place - they have done a great job of taking care of what I needed done - since living in Portland (3 years) I have tried different places and they have been the best so far - so I will stick with them - they have been professional as well I don't normally review places but this is one that I am very happy with The one thing that got my attention with them was I had an issue where my vehicle wouldn't start - took it to another place and they said $200 for a battery- I then took it to these guys and it was a battery cable that all in all cost me $21 - so they have won my business and since then they have done quite a bit of work on my vehicle and I have had no issues with it not being right read more

GET A SECOND OPINION. I took my car in here to get the brakes looked at, and they recommended over $2,000 in repairs. I decided to get a second opinion and took it to the Les Schwab down the street. Turns out I just needed a slight brake adjustment and to replace the fluid. Cost me 20 minutes and $145. Although I can't speak to the quality of their work, I believe they are intentionally overcharging. Les Schwab has less incentive to overcharge customers because they can fall back on money from other branches. Gotta love corporate business commandments to keep employees honest. I always prefer to support local business, but I will never bring my car here again. read more

It is rare that I have gone to get my car fixed and left feeling taken advantage of, but I did after a visit to Pacific Car Care. I stopped by and described that my "check charging system" light had come on and that I heard a whirring sound from under the hood. Mike said "sounds like your alternator is dead." I know just enough about cars to have known that. He said that an alternator would be $400 - $500 and it would take less than two hours to install. I thought that sounded OK so I left the car. I received a call back from someone else a bit later, saying that the total would be about $1250. In addition to the alternator, I needed a new battery and some kind of belt. I asked what the charges for the battery would be and they said it would be $180 for the battery and about $110 to install. I asked if I could simply buy a new battery and install myself, since I have done this several times. They said if I did that, and the alternator went out, they would just say that it was because I did not have them swap the battery right then. (They also charged me $62.50 to test the alternator. That surprised me since we pretty well knew what was wrong.) I felt pretty pressured, so I just had them do it. They were fast, and the car is running fine, so I assume they did an OK job. But, I don't like walking away from a transaction feeling like I got hosed, so I will not be returning. read more

Don't come here for service if you are a woman. As someone who knows cars and is a woman, they overcharge for parts and labor, and take advantage of the fact that you look like you don't know what you're talking about. I asked them to look over everything for me, and give me a quote. I'm no stranger to the industry and I know that if I don't want to do the work myself I need to cushion the parts with at least $3-400 in labor. However, they quoted me for nearly $2600 worth of work (most of which didn't need to be done immediately) and the work that did need to be done more urgently rounded out to about $1800 for only my rear brakes, a headlight, spark plugs and an oil valve. For their additional "recommendations" which made the total closer to $2600 they said I would need windshield wipers, front brakes, and license plate lights. This was already extremely overpriced and unrealistic but since I was on a time crunch I agreed to pay it. The following morning, they called to inform me that while they were completing the repairs we had agreed upon, they found that an additional part was corroded and needed to be replaced. No one ever called to inform me of this repair, or ask for my consent to install a new part. The additional charge? $111. Please don't waste your time or money coming here, these men will milk you for all you're worth. read more

Very pleased with service. Auto "felt different" when driven. Wasn't sure if it was just because of wet pavement since it is an older 4-wheel drive. It's close by so I used them often for my old work truck. I would never take my sorts car there. The past 3 times it's come back with problems associated with the repairs that they would not stand behind. The two owners were a good cop-bad cop team. Unfortunately the good cop retired. The bad cop is still there growling at the customers. I have been transitioning to Master Wrench just down the block but they were booked this last time a repair was needed so back to pacific care care. The owner of this place is rude, inappropriate and clearly has anger management issues. Avoid at all costs. I would give him zero stars if possible I had a 7:30 am appointment and thought the oil change would be done then. When the owner explained that was a drop off time and work only begins at 8, I said that wasn't on their website and that I had to start work at 8:30. Instead of trying to find a solution - he said well that's not going to work for you and he escalated the situation. What kind of a businessman is he? I was only questioning the lack of information on the signup sheet. He then said I don't have to work on your car -- which is fine with me. Please don't go here. I was very surprised to have a negative experience here considering all the positive reviews. I called to get a rough estimate on parts/labor for a common repair, and spoke with a woman on the phone. I was told they don't give estimates for labor or their part prices over the phone unless you've been there previously. However, I see in many reviews that quotes have been provided over the phone. I made mention of this to the person I was speaking with (respectfully) and explained it was in my best interest to shop around for a repair as I had already had the vehicle diagnosed. The woman was rather brusque and unwilling to accommodate. The kicker for me was that my boyfriend called a few hours later about his vehicle that needs a small repair - and guess what - same woman gave him a verbal estimate over the phone. I was shocked. Is this shop sexist? I'd hate for that to be the case. I need to have around $4000 of work done on my vehicle, and this business has just lost that chance. read more

I called Pacific Car Care today to see if they could give me a rough estimate for replacing a part in my car (common yearly maintenance thing). The woman on the phone was very brusque and told me no. I asked if someone else could and she again said no. There was no explanation of their policies (maybe they don't give any prices by phone?) or suggestion to come on by. She didn't even ask if I was a previous customer. I am. I had a $1000+ repair completed there earlier this year. Such a bummer. My car had a problem - after starting it, driving it for a while, and turning it off, I would have to wait an hour or so for it to successfully start again (all the temperatures looked fine.) I took it here to get it fixed. I paid for the diagnostics test and got a phone call later that day. The guy told me that my car had some issue with the ignition that neded to be fixed. I thought this was strange as my problem seemed unrelated to the ignition. I asked if this was what was causing the restart problem. The guy seemed very wishy washy and basically just said I needed the ignition fixed. At that point I declined the service and offered to come pick the car up. Then the guy tells me that they already took the ignition apart and that, due to my supposed ignition problem, the battery cannot turn off. I politely told him that I wanted my car back the way I brought it in and he replied by saying that sometimes these things just happen and I needed to pay hundreds of dollars for them to fix this (all while refusing to directly answer my question as to whether this ignition issue was causing the restart problem I brought my car in for in the first place!) I then told him I was coming in to talk to them directly. When I got there, they told me my key was stuck in the ignition, causing the battery to become permanently on (I never faced any issue before.) I went to the garage and magically turned the ignition off. I paid the diagnostics fee and left. This shop essentially tried to get me to pay for a problem that at best never existed and at worst they caused...and in either case, what they wanted me to pay for was completely unrelated to what I wanted solved! I know this because I took it elsewhere and it turned out to be a computer issue...not the ignition!  Don't waste your time or money here. read more

My mom needed help with a couple RV batteries and two gentlemen from Pacific Car Care helped us immensely of their own accord. Checked the voltages, cleaned the heads, noticed the cells needed water, and gave us helpful advice. The mechanic gave us his used wire brush to take back to the RV and clean the connectors. I've taken my car here for a few years, and I seriously love it and send everyone I know here. I have a Honda Civic, so I can't testify to their expertise with less common vehicles, but I've been blown away by their friendliness and quick service every time. Their prices are very competitive; basic fluids and filters stuff is cheaper here than pretty much anywhere else in town. As far as I know, they've never tried to upcharge me--I'm a car hypochondriac, so they have every chance to, but they consistently reassure me that it's running just fine and often don't even charge me for the inspection. When it has needed maintenance, they've given me advice on what is highest priority given my budget (I'm broke) and have actually recommended other shops when they thought someone else could do the job cheaper. I went in here a few weeks ago with a maintenance issue, and they worked me in as a walk-in and fixed it for me in half an hour, on a day when they were visibly swamped... and wouldn't let me pay them. They like to joke that they work for cookies, so I'm thinking of bringing them some. read more

After the phone call I just had with this company it tells me they don't know much about cars. I called asking to for an estimate of cost for 90k maintenance on my vehicle. She asked what's the problem with it. I stated there was nothing wrong with my car it just needs it's regular maintenance and went on to say what that was per the manual. Well I was then told she can't give me an estimate over the phone they need to look at the car first. Which makes absolutely no sense! You don't need to inspect my car to give me a price on an oil change, brake fluid flush, etc...I would stay far far away from them! read more

Take your vehicle elsewhere and do not do business with these people. I cannot make a judgement on the quality of their actual work (I cannot see it), but on their ethics and honesty and behavior you may bet I certainly can and will. Zero star is my rating. This fiasco begins when I looked under my truck, and saw a waterfall of gas pouring out. The closest repair shop to me is Pacific Car Care. "Mike", said they determined a fuel line had blown. To repair (vehicle too old for a replacement line, he said), the gas tank would have to be lowered. $350 - $400. Ok. Next day he called: Final cost, $525. Why a hundred and twenty five over estimate? 'More time than expected to repair broken line', he said. He added that the fuel filler neck was cracked. "This is the time to do it.", he said. Roughly another $400. I said no. He said I would need to sign a release, then (there was no release, of course). Next day, he says the tank is in but truck won't start. Not getting gas. Had gas when I came in. Mike says it's the fuel pump. Fuel pump worked fine when I came in. "Sometimes they just break." He would not be able to get to it until Monday (it was now Friday). Prior charge plus pump ($220.) plus new labor now equaled $999.+change. I told him to do it, that I had no choice. Weekend: I found 2 dozen fuel pumps going between $45 and $85. Monday. Right at 7:00 I call up, dispute charges of pump. Mike is out; guy tells me he doesn't know anything about it. I tell him that when he does the work, I want MY old fuel pump and the box of MY new fuel pump when I pick up truck, don't throw them away. I get a call back in half hour saying miraculously the old pump works fine, after all. Now my price is $636. Why isn't it $520, which is what the estimate was before all the fuel pump nonsense? Elmer(?) says something about crossbars or braces, blah blah blah, which Mike must have "forgotten" to mention (though Mike had the estimates down to the penny). Other than that he doesn't know anything either. "Well, where's the owner?" Ken, he says. But Ken isn't in either. Imagine that. DO NOT do business with these people, they are shady and sleazy beyond belief, talk in circles, and nobody seems to know anything at all about nothing. read more

I've taken my car here on recommendation of a friend. The first time I got my timing belt replaced and they did a good job, it was timely and priced about the same as other places. However, I was bummed when they said it was OK to leave the car overnight but I found it unlocked when I got there. The second time I took my car in they charged me $100 to run a diagnostic and sent me to another place. When I asked why it was so much they said it was for the time to go through the diagnostic tree and get me the code so I'd know what was wrong with the code. I know some places do this and others don't. I just would be a much more loyal customer to a place that doesn't. read more

Ken and Mike are very honest about repairs needed, and look for ways to mitigate costs where they can. All the issues with a vehicle are explained clearly, and there isn't high pressure to do recommended repairs. Absolutely Horrific experience!!! I took our SUV in for with coolant issues. They replaced, timing belt, thermostat, water pump, hoses, suggested new brakes.... I asked them three times does the engine seem strong? Every time the response was the same... Engine seems fine. I went to pick it up since they said it would be finished in the morning and something happened and they had to pull it all back apart and decided not to call me and let me know, so that cost me an additional rental day. After I got the vehicle back I drove it to work. On the way back the check engine light came on (and it hadn't once before I took it in.) It started to overheat when I got to town so I called them after hours and they were nice enough to have it towed. The following day I called the office to find out that they ran an engine compression test and it now had a head issue. You don't think with me asking how the engine was over and over they could have run this prior to me driving it away from their facility? The latest number I got from them was an additional $4000. I was gone a few days and when I got back into town I called them to tell them I was just coming to get it. They now gave me a bill for the towing. Communication terrible! I have decided to have someone else look over the vehicle to verify it wasn't an issue Pacific Car Care caused. No check engine light until they were finished working on my car. Pacific Care Care broke a sensor in my car and then told me it was an additional $300 to fix it. No check engine light when i dropped off the car. The check engine light comes on when I drove away after picking up the car. We had to drive back so they could spend a half an hour diagnosing their damage. I was offered no discount for the inconvenience and they took no responsibility for damaging a sensor that triggered the check engine light. DO NOT TRUST THESE GUYS. Unfortunately, they charged me +/- $400 to hook the car up to the computer, turn two bolts, and install a $50 part. Classic. Oh. I took my car in for a failing starter. They replaced it but then told me that the radiator cap neck cracked and they needed to order a new radiator. I was concerned that now my $400 repair would cost a lot more but the next day they took care of the radiator at no additional cost. They could have easily told me that it was standard wear and tear on my 12 year old Altima and charge me for it but since they were not sure how it cracked they decided to keep me as a happy customer and eat the extra cost.
