The Van Aken District was such a nice find while I was casually driving around. I checked out this food court recently and was really impressed with everything it had to offer. There are tons of food options including pizza, pasta, poutine, sandwiches, salads, and a huge variety of desserts. It's definitely one of those places where everyone can find something they like which makes it great for groups. I decided to try the chicken shawarma poutine, and even though it sounded a little different at first, it ended up being absolutely delicious. The fries were crispy, the chicken was flavorful, and the toppings all came together perfectly. I noticed a lot of other unique dishes at different stalls too which makes me want to go back and try more. The prices were very reasonable as well especially for the quality and portion sizes. What really stood out, though, was the atmosphere. There was live music playing, which gave the whole place such a lively and fun vibe. You can even order a beer and just walk around or head outside to enjoy it in the fresh air. Between the food variety, affordable prices, and the relaxed but energetic setting, I think this spot is perfect for a casual meal or even a night out with friends. This was my first time visiting the area since they remodeled it and I was pleasantly surprised and impressed! The community does a great job keeping everything looking nice and clean. There's limited, but free parking in front of the shops and a bigger parked lot on the other side. I believe there's a parking garage attached to the space, I'm just not sure how much it costs. There's even green space for kids and pets. This is a very nice area to spend an afternoon exploring. read more

What a treasure chest of local eats and gifts! We had set our course for a business within the market that we found on Yelp and then arrived to the surprise of being located within a food hall- jackpot! We ended up visiting four of the businesses during our visit- working our way through matzo ball soup, coffee, poutine and Brassica. We were so impressed by the layout and design of the hall- from the variety of indoor and outdoor seating options to the landscaping and kid-friendly features like high chairs and coloring pages. This is a fabulous stop for locals and travelers alike. Their outdoor courtyard is filled with shade, turf and beautiful flowers. The Van Aken Hall is such a fun addition to the area. The whole plaza has changed since I was living in the area- a very long time ago. There is a really nice selection of local businesses represented as well as great ambiance and even outdoor seating. This is an awesome spot for friends to meet up, for a date, a fun spot to work remotely or even have a business lunch. We saw that the Van Aken Market Hall was open late so we stopped by around 9pm on a Monday. We noticed that a lot of places were closing up or were already closed. The Craft Collective was open later so we decided to grab a couple beers there with our friend. It was such a fun time. When we visit again I would make a point to come earlier in the day, maybe for lunch to check everything out and get the full experience. There were so many businesses that I wish I had the chance to try. read more

We stopped here after going to the Cleveland Clinic, it is nestled back in a nice little town and has a lot of shopping options around! Inside you have a coffee shop, several food locations including bbq/sushi/burgers/pizza/deli/meditteranean, they also have really nice open areas with tables and booths if you want to stop in here to work remote, and a couple of little shops inside such as handmade soap/bath bombs etc. to look around at while you are waiting for your food. Definitely would stop here for lunch and to work on remote days if I lived in the area, there was street parking and a small lot in the back which was pretty full at lunch time so prepare to find a parking spot and possibly walk. read more

We walked around and perused the stores and eventually decided on getting food and drinks from Banter! I got the CBR-Chicken Bacon Ranch poutine and it was DELICIOUS. Cool market in a nice area. It has many local vendors and many healthier places to eat. The Van Aken District is in a hip part of Shaker Heights. All kinds of coffee places and healthy food choices. You can also find many gift stores. A lot of good restaurants are inside the market, with their own seating areas. It can vary wildly on hours. These places all open and close at different times. In the morning the coffee places are all open. There's several which are all pretty close to each other so it will be no problem locating one of these. Brassica, the Mediterranean restaurant popular in Columbus, has a location here. There's more places to eat outside the food hall, so don't just look in there. Nature's Oasis is on the north side of the building. This is a cafe and grocery store. Everything is organic. There's also many stores where you can find nice looking trinkets and stuff. It can get pretty crowded. One good thing is that you can take the RTA train here. The station is just outside the market and has a parking lot for passengers there. read more

I really love the environment and amazing food options at Van Aken Market Hall. I had attended a private charity event at LADDER, they opened up about 8 weeks ago and are located across the street. All their clothes are from small brands so you are supporting local when you shop! The owners are so very sweet. I went into Market Hall with my mom and we ordered from the pizza place inside "Scorpacciata Pizza Co" all the workers were very friendly and you can watch them hand make your pizza. The only downside was we waited for about an hour to receive the pizza that we ordered. We were told there was about a 45 minute wait. I am assuming people were ordering mobile orders? The seating is very limited but around 8:00 it clears up a bit outside so you can sit at a Picnic bench on the green lawn outside. Overall it was a good experience and will return. Next time I would love to try out more shops inside. read more

I already posted a pic, got the standard roast beef on their standard French crusty baguette. It killed!!! Ate it five hours later, split it with the wife, the roast beef was good. Nice thin sliced, did not taste like your standard deli roast beef. That is NOT cilantro in the picture. But not parsley? Was good anyways. Wish the horseradish/Mayo was more horsey, but it was good nonetheless. And just some generic greens. No onion or tomato, but I don't think it would have paired with the beef, which was very light tasting, but flavorful. I am sure they have more toppings, but it was my first visit, and I wanted to see what it came like as-is. Now, the star of the show was the bread! Beat Panera all up and down the block! Was crusty, not flaky crusty, but CRUSTY! And not soft inside, but firm and fresh. And do you remember I said I ate it five hours after I bought it! $9 but it was a treat. Can't compare this place to generic sub shop. More like a specialty bread store, that just happens to sell really great sammys! Bread like my grandparents used to get. This is a food court and mini shopping centre. It is a new building and I believe it opened around late 2018 or early 2019. I visited last week Thursday (11 April 2019) since I was in here for a Yelp event at Stem soaps. There are some shops outside the market too. FOOD -- There are a few options to dine but when I tried to get food after 9pm, nothing was opened as expected. The Yelp event ended late so I could not eat beforehand. I really wanted to go to On the Rise (bread) and Brassica but they were closed. On the Rise actually has very limited hours as well. I later found out that Brassica, the mediterranean restaurant opened the next day. Tough luck for me. The pasta place (Scorpacciata Pasta Co.) was closed and the only placed opened was Banter. I thought the food at Banter was okay but still edible. I mean, it was good but not really my type of food because everything looked fried. I ordered the pulled chicken poutine which is basically pulled chicken with fries and little pieces of dumplings. I didn't get any sauce or cheese but I got a hot sauce on the side. I was full after eating. I can't wait to come back to eat at Brassica (and try other restaurants) since I prefer simple, plant based meals. By the way, Restored Cold Press juice is opening in the summer of 2019. SHOPPING -- There are plenty to choose from inside the market. I visited Stem Soaps which is a small natural and homemade soap shop. Nothing else inside the market was opened at the time I was walking around (after 8pm). There is a spice store in here which looks wonderful and it is a female owned business. They were unfortunately closed as well. Stump plants will be opening in summer 2019 at 3396 Tuttle Road. Overall, I was hoping to find more food options besides the Banter restaurant but to no avail but I still managed to get something to eat. This market hall is expanding with new shops opening in summer 2019 so hopefully they will have extended hours. The interior acoustics are designed to generate maximum ambient noise. In the misguided quest for maximum sterility, management will deploy people with gas powered leaf blowers - bad enough at any time of day, but especially obnoxious if you want to relax with a coffee or pastry on the artificial turfed outdoor setting (and in the moments when the blowers are idle, you get their walkie talkie communications set on 10). They are also doing their utmost to keep the landfill operators busy with a steady stream of disposable items (although rising star, to their credit, offer ceramic mugs and a nominal discount for bringing your own mug). read more

What a cool location and vibe in the center of Shaker. We drove over from Lakewood, and it is like a Chicago social district, with lots of options and great outdoor spaces for the family. Shinola is fabulous as always, love the nod to Detroit. I love the Van Aken Market Hall! If you're in the suburbs, it's basically a must on your visit list. I love the opportunity to visit so many small businesses all at once. From a cycling studio like GrooveRyde to an Italian restaurant or boutique gift shop, you can do it all in a hybrid indoor and outdoor environment. There's always easy, free street parking and parking lots available. It's a safe area where you can feel good about a date night or a night out with girlfriends. In non-COVID times they'll have bands, art shows or even outdoor fitness classes on the greens. Pull the list of Van Aken local businesses off their website because it's always changing and growing. As an out-of-towner, I consider Van Aken a must-visit if you are in the suburbs. It reminds me of a smaller, more outdoor Chelsea Market / Boston Public Market concept with eateries, cute local shops, and lots of indoor/outdoor seating for individuals to do work or groups or families to hang out. I've been enjoying going to this spot while trying to work remotely and enjoy the recent good weather, sitting outside with a coffee and/or a treat from one of the eateries inside. The WiFi is free and relatively strong here (I could take a few video calls). It's relatively crowded at lunch time and in the evenings starting around 5 but is pretty sparse in the mornings and in the afternoon. Some of my favorite places to eat here have been the Cheese shop which does an amazing grilled cheese and Banter, which serves alcoholic beverages during the daytime and has poutine (yum!) The coffee shop is perfect for getting your caffeine buzz on if you are working (the cardamom bomb latte is a real winner.) Parking is plentiful in the free garage, hand sanitizer stations everywhere, and the bathrooms are super clean. My one small gripe about this place is that I wish there were more power outlets spread throughout the inside. The one area that seems to have a lot of power outlets appears to be closed off for renovation or covid or something right now. All in all, a great place to chill and do work by yourself or hang out with people! So glad this place is here! read more

This is a terrific public Market. It's like a high end food court the specialty shops and places to eat and drink. It's open early in the morning until 10 at night. Each of the food places are I independent and not part of a larger chain. The places to eat are Brassica, Scorpacciata Pasta, Craft Collective which is beers in a full bar, On The Rise, a coffee counter and Banter, which features poutine and sausages. We are only in town for a few days but everything was so good to hear that we've come back to this Market whole twice. We love the pastry items at the coffee counter. We also had several items from banter, the sausage place. One of them was extremely interesting, a rabbit pot pie. Outstanding! But the best meal we had was at Brassica. Everything there it's good. My kind of place!!! We came to the Van Aken District while visiting some friends in Shaker Heights, and really had a great time. The variety is just awesome! On this visit, my family enjoyed Scorpacciata, and then some brews at the Craft Collective. The food was fresh and delicious, as was the beer. I really enjoyed the open concept, the ample parking, and the ice cream place across the street with a park for the kids to play in. I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting the Shaker Heights area - it's awesome! read more

Just opening.... so far there is Bakery (On the Rise) coffee shop (Rising Star) and a bottle house (Banter). There is also a spice shop and a soap shop. We went for dinner at the place called Banter. This specialized in poutine and sliders. Each slider is a la cart and the poutine comes in half and full size portions. We had a pierogi appetizer and a few sliders. The pierogi were potato and cheese inside and were hot and delicious. They were served with grilled onions and a side of sour cream. We tried the chicken paprikash, forest city, and buffalo chicken poutine. The paprikash was shredded chicken and was very flavorful. The forest city was with mushrooms and had a great flavor for our vegetarian. Our main event was the buffalo chicken poutine that was fantastic. It was boneless buffalo nuggets and then the usual poutine fries and gravy with some sort of cheese sauce. We all enjoyed our meals and will be back read more

Such a great concept and addition to the Cleveland area! There's a mix of various restaurants and stores in this spacious indoor setting. My friend and I ended up getting food from Banter and taking it over to enjoy at Craft Collective. We had a chicken paprikash poutine entree to share, as well as a side of brussels sprouts. Our meal was full of flavor and very satisfying! Craft Collective has SO many different beers, meads, and ciders on tap, but our bartender was great with offering recommendations. You can get flights of as many beers as you want - perfect for the indecisive like me (or if you just want to try lots of different beers without committing to a full glass!). The Metropolis mead, which is made with blackcurrant and some other fruits, was one that my friend and I were particularly impressed by, but there are so many different options on their menu, you're sure to find one (or two...or more!) you like. And as an added bonus, there's free parking in a garage right next to the market :) definitely come check this place out! read more

The hall opens up nicely to the outside, with a very nice patio area. Inside, you can find a bakery/deli shop, On the Rise, Scorpacciata Pasta Company, Chutney B, which focuses on the use of spices in dishes like curry, masala, and harira, Banter, which features poutines, corn dogs, sliders, and sausages, and the Rising Star Coffee Roasters. There are also a number of small stores, including STEM soaps, Spice for Life, Luster gift boutique, and Shinola, selling watches, bicycles and leather. There is a lot of casual seating areas around, including more traditional tables/chairs, to comfy chairs with coffee tables, and more, so walk around if you don't immediately see something, there is more hidden around. I love this place! I have to do a bit of compare and contrast to the west side's new Ohio City Galley. While I love the restaurants in the galley, something about the atmosphere just makes me not want to spend a lot money on the food. While OCG may resemble a food court, this place resembles a very classy food hall. The layout here doesn't present all the food stations in a row as a mall might. The concept is modular with a restaurant here and another one over there with seating of all different styles (bar seats, comfy couches, normal tables, adirondack chairs, and outdoor picnic tables) mixed in between. And it's not just food. Opened already are 3 small pop-up sized shops within the food hall. You can buy home goods, soaps and spices. There is also a Rising Star Coffee. I've so far eaten a great sandwich at On the Rise Artisan Breads and had a good drink at Craft Collective (check out my reviews of those places). Having eaten at another location of Brassica (Columbus) and Banter (Gordon Square) I can say there are a lot of good options here and that doesn't even include the stores and food places outside of the Market Hall. I love that the east side is finally getting some local transplants from the west. And the RTA Blue Line has its last stop right outside the door of this place.
