I went through the drive thru and ordered a chili cheese dog and onion rings. The hotdog was everything I remembered about a Varsity hotdog. It was wonderful. The onion rings were so saturated with grease that I could hardly eat them. Wound up throwing them away. To be honest it was 3:00 so pretty much after the lunch rush. First time here! It's insane how big this place is. I got a triple stacked burger ($10ish with a soda) and the chili hot dog and chili burger ($12 both with soda). It was all very delicious. The fries were so crispy and flavorful! It reminded me of eating potato chips. I'm definitely a fan. The service was decent. It was kind of slow. Today on the 90th Anniversary Celebration at the Town Center Location I experienced nothing but kindness and smiling faces. As the line of fans wrapped around the building it provided the opportunity to meet other fans of the Delicious Food founded by a Graduate of Georgia Tech and football fans of every team around. Some dressed in the Varsity Fan wear as others dressed in the summer casuals. On this day I found happy smiles and patience because it took me two hours to get through the line and get a bag of goodies along with the Frosted Orange of course. This place, well the original location, is on my bucket list so I had to check it out. The food looks really sketchy, and kind of old, but is DELICIOUS. This location is really clean, but doesn't have the same upbeat staff I was counting on. Everyone there looked so unhappy and our cashier mumbled "what'll you have", obviously forced into the greeting he'd rather skip. It didn't ruin the experience, but it took away from it. The Frosted Orange was very tasty and the regular size is plenty. It's probably easiest to eat it with a spoon. Also, they have a seasonal sweet potato hand pie that was of this world good. It's impossible to not look like a slob eating it, but that's okay. The chili cheese dog had secret mustard on it. It wasn't bad, just surprising as they are not traditionally made with built-in condiments. I've always wanted to go to Varsity when I first saw it on the food network. I guess I was expecting too much from all the hype but I was a bit disappointed. Went on a Sunday night and it wasn't too busy so our food came out pretty fast. The place was very spacious, so need to worry about not finding a place to sit. The customer service was prompt and they were really nice. I ordered the regular chili cheese dog with fries and sweet tea. The dog didn't taste anything extraordinary. It was pretty much basic. I've had better. The fries were okay too. The only thing I really liked was the sweet tea. I did tried some of the onion rings that my brother ordered and they were good though. Overall it was a decent place for a meal. But personally I wouldn't come back to it next time I am in Atlanta. read more

Yes, there's a Varsity location all the way up in Kennesaw at Town Center mall. The Varsity is an Atlanta institution. There are a handful of locations spread throughout the metro. This is an old-fashioned fast food restaurant that I believe is underwhelming to most people who try it for the first time. It's one of those places that can often pop up in conversations about Atlanta. When people try it, many times it's not what they were expecting. For traditional American drive-in quality hamburgers and hot dogs (I'm assuming like the ones people used to eat in the 30s, 40s, 50s, and so forth), the Varsity shouldn't disappoint. I can't say I've ever had a bad experience at The Varsity. However, I don't think it's significantly better than most typical fast food joints either. I've come to this Varsity at Town Center with coworkers for lunch a few times over the years. It's a fairly large standalone restaurant. It's not as big as the original location on North Ave, but it's big enough with its spacious dining room, patio with umbrella-covered tables, and sectioned-off parking lot just outside the mall. The Varsity is known for its hamburgers, hot dogs, fried apple and peach pies, fries, onion rings, chocolate milk served with ice (PC - plain chocolate), and frosted orange shakes (FO). You can get chili, cheese, and slaw on your burger or dog. You can also add bacon to your burger. The burgers and dogs are affordable at only $2-4 each, but they are somewhat small. They offer over a half-dozen combos (burger(s) and/or dog(s) with fries or rings and a drink) which are all under $10 before tax. I've had the #1 and #2 combos. The #1 combo consists of two chili dogs, fries or onion rings, and a drink. The #2 combo consists of a chili cheese dog and a chili cheese burger, fries or onion rings, and a drink. I think the quality of food here is the same as the North Ave location. The burgers and dogs are compact and savory and the warm and flavorful chili is what I like most about them. The fries and rings are both pretty greasy which is the norm. When it comes to the food, it's not about presentation, but rather old school taste and comfort. The frosted orange tastes like it sounds. It's like drinking sweet, finely crushed, orange ice. If dining in, all food is served on paper plates and trays. Service is fine. If you've never been to The Varsity, I do think it's worth trying since it's something unique to Atlanta. Food-wise, it doesn't really matter which location you go to. Just don't expect anything amazing. It's simple comfort food. read more

I grew up eating The Varsity any time we would visit my aunt and uncle in Marietta or Atlanta. I went the last time to the original downtown in 2016! This trip, we were pulling our camper and didn't want to go that route, so we opted for this location as it was on our route!! When we arrived, we realized you could not go in at all, you could only do the drive through. Being disappointed and optimistic all at the same time, I called and spoke with a supervisor. I asked if there was any way to be served if we couldn't fit through the drive thru. He graciously told me to walk up to the window. I was so surprised but grateful. What more can be said about The Varsity? I've been coming here since I was a kid and it's been just as greasy good as you could ever expect. Don't come here looking to eat remotely healthy. If you do and give it a bad review that's on you, this is a throw back to the drive-ins of old and is a staple in Atlanta. This location doesn't have the charm of the downtown location, but it also has a fraction of the crowd and the food is EXACTLY the same. Give me less wait times over colorful characters any day. My go-to order is the #2 (chili cheese dog and chili cheese burger), fries or onion rings (normally I get the Mrs. to get the other and we split) and a Frosted Orange (F.O. for those 'in the know'). I love this place. All of it, the car hops, the what's ya have, the PCs and the FOs,. Well maybe not the steakburgers so much. Once upon a time I could eat a sack full of chili dogs here. Now I am lucky to choke down one. Service is always good. Even on the busiest of tech football weekends every one there strives to get your food out correctly, promptly and hot. Fried pies are a taste treat. They don't sell bbq and Budweiser any more. But dining here, if you can call it that, is always a special treat. Those onion rings aren't greasy. They are just shiny . If you like pimento cheese on your burgers, chili and slaw on your dogs and a little grease on your fries and rings the step up and tell them what you will have. If you are a Georgia Tech or Georgia football fan you have likly heard of and even eaten at the Athens or North Ave locations. I lived in the dorms at Georgia State across from the Varsity on North Avenue for a year. I have fond memories of the smell of the grease walking from the Marta station at the end of the day. When I started working in Kennesaw, somebody came in from lunch one day with a cup from the Varsity. "You went all the way to Atlanta for lunch?!" "Um.. no.. there's a Varsity by the mall." God loves me! Now this Varsity is not like the Varsity in Atlanta. Instead of robust calls of "What do ya have!" there are much more timid people behind the registers. The place is lacking the charming skank of the original. And instead of sports or news programs on the television there were children's cartoons. But the food is the familiar greasy chili dogs and fries I'm used to. People either really love the Varsity or really hate it. Growing up in Atlanta my classes took many field trips to the city, always stopping for lunch at the Varsity. The Varsity holds a happy place in my heart and I'm glad to have one near my new home on the north side. read more
