Walked into The Varsity in Kennesaw, Georgia, it was a Saturday afternoon and the place was busy but ordering went fast. The restaurant was really clean and accommodating. There were plenty of clean tables to eat at. The girl welcomed us with the Varsity saying "What'll Ya Have?". I ordered the #7 combo meal with two Slawdogs, onion rings, and an unsweet iced tea. My wife ordered just the Chili Cheese Slawdog. The Slawdog was great! Nice cool crunchy slaw on the hotdog, it was really good. The onion rings were hot and crunchy. Very good. My wife loved her Chili Cheese Slawdog. The chili on this dog was very flavorful. Not too spicy, and the slaw again like my Slawdog was cool and crunchy and was a nice compliment to the chili cheese dog. After we ate, we ordered one of each of the pies they offer. They have an apple, peach, and sweet potato pies. We brought them home for later. They were fresh cooked and smells great. Whenever we come to town, we'll be stopping at The Varsity. read more

This was my first time visiting any location of The Varsity. I was really excited because it's a Georgia staple. The dining room is bright, light and spacious. It was also very clean. The lady at the counter was super joyful, kind and helpful. Two of us had the #4 , double cheeseburger with bacon. We split the fries and onion rings. They were the best part of the entire meal. The burgers are kind of nasty and taste freezer burnt. The Varsity orange cream shake is delicious. We won't be back for the burgers but will be for the service and sides. read more

We were on vacation from Florida and while traveling around the area we stopped by The Varsity for dinner. We've eaten here before many years ago when our kids were young. I remember the hamburgers being super tasty back then and always sparked a memory to want to come back. Today I honestly have to say the hamburger was disappointing. It wasn't bad but it also wasn't very good if you know what I mean... It was just OK and just had very little flavor. My wife and I both got the Glorified Hamburger with onion rings. The onion rings were VERY greasy!!! The fried Apple Pie really didn't have much taste to it other than greasy pie.... The Peach Pie was ok and had good flavor. My wife and I both liked the Fried Peach Pie the best. Our son-in-law said we should have gotten the Hotdog. He said he liked it. If we ever come back we will definitely get the hotdog for sure. You can not got to ATL and not pay The Varsity a visit. We stopped by for some food after the soccer game and this place was busy busy. Thankfully, there were several lines open so the wait wasn't too bad. We were a pretty big group and there were 10 of us trying to get some food. We all ordered something different as the menu has several different options. I ordered a basic cheeseburger, fries, and a shake. The cheeseburger was far from basic. It was juicy, flavorful, and seasoned - grilled perfectly. The fries had a nice crisp to them and they were super hot when I took my first bite. I was able to try out my cousins chicken tenders and they were delicious. We got our food to go since we saw how hectic it was in the dining room. The tables were all clean though and we saw a worker cleaning up as soon as people would leave. The cashier could've been friendly but she wasn't. The rooftop parking lot has some great views and we spent some time taking pictures. Overall, we all enjoyed our food, service could be better, and I would definitely stop by again. read more

This is a VERY popular old school fast food joint in Atlanta that has a dedicated local fan base and is quite a tourist destination as well. The Varsity is a local icon and has been in business since 1928. They lay claim to being the largest drive-in restaurant in the world as they can handle 600 cars for their drive-in and seat 800 people inside. The Varsity has seven locations around Georgia and this is the original and two locations are also in the Atlanta airport. Some even say this is the largest fast food restaurant in the world as it covers two blocks. The Varsity was originally opened to target GA Tech students and it is still very popular in the university area. If you find yourself in Atlanta you should try out the original location at least once to experience the great historic fast food ambiance and great onion rings. Overall I don't find the food here that great but the original location is definitely better than the airport locations. It is certainly worth a visit here at the original location simply to experience the ambiance and see how they handle the hordes of hungry visitors. read more

Have wanted to try the Downtown Atlanta location for some time but never made it there. Was at the Town Centre Mall in Kennesaw with my youngest son and his family and there is a Varsity across the parking lot from Macy's. Asked him if there were any good and he replied, "Only if you like cheap Hot Dogs" He was not interested in giving them a try, so I went back the next day. Large open area and very easy to order. I ordered a Classic Combo of Two Chili Dogs, Onion Rings and their signature Frosted Orange Milkshake. Very quick service and very good. The Chili Dogs were all Beef with a generous amount of Chili. The Onion Rings were very good but a bit greasy. The Frosted Orange was good but would probably order something else next time. It was a fun experience and good street food. I'd go again and maybe at some point in time, I'll make it to the Downtown Atlanta Location. read more

I was here simply because I was chaperoning a field trip. I usually would not come to the Varsity. I will say that this location is better than the one in Atlanta. The Varsity always fills me with memories of good days. Having spent time at the North Avenue Trade School (ME '89) I spend many days of my youth at the downtown location. The Kennesaw location is familiar when you walk in. The furniture and menu are the same, but the staff are a bit more relaxed, and a little slower. You don't have to worry about being yelled at if you step to the counter without your money out and your order ready. You can still hear a "Whatta ya have?" but overall the atmosphere is much more laid back. The prices seem a lot higher than I remember, but then the price of everything does. The food remains the same. One bite into those chili dogs or onion rings and my mind takes me back 35 years. Of course with the food being the same, I also know I am going to need some tums later this afternoon. I couldn't eat like this every day, but it is an occasional treat well worth it. I have to go 4 stars instead of 5 because of the price and the gastronomical distress I know will follow, but for pure enjoyment and memories it would be a 5. read more

I had the number one and a regular cheese burger. Everything was hot and delicious. They have a drive-thru window, outdoor dining, and a large parking lot. I found myself in Atlanta, and being a lover of fast food, of course I had to try the Varsity. I might have gone to the original downtown, but the one in Marietta was just so much closer to where I was staying (with plenty of free parking,) so I took the easy way out. I had mentioned to an ATL native back home in Las Vegas, and when I mentioned to her that I was going to make a trip to the Varsity, she told me to get some Tums, as the hot dogs are total gut bombs, in her opinion. As it turned out, that was an exaggeration. The dogs are actually quite small, and you would have to down 2 or 3 of these tiny tubers to have the full gut bomb effect. I had one, so there was no issue. The weenie itself is a fine dog. I was expecting something flavorless, but it actually has a taste to it. Nothing overpowering, but it definitely has flavor and you will either like it or you won't. The chili is typical hot dog stand chili and the cheese is a mild cheddar, and that is a nice touch. The fries are fine, if a bit salty, and the fried peach pie is a pleasant junk food treat. So yeah, if you are in Atlanta (or Marietta) check it out. read more

We love The Varsity! If you want fast, cheap, and tasty food, come here! Also come because this establishment has been around for years, and it is a tourist spot! Process is easy, and what makes it even easier is that "southern hospitality" that the staff so graciously give! Everyone was super nice! It wasn't as busy, but that's because we pre-ordered our food and a time was given for when it would be ready. I can imagine this place gets crazy throughout the day, so plan ahead! What we ordered: Bacon Cheeseburger w/ everything- hubby approved! Chili Slaw Dog w/ extra onions- small but satisfying! Rings- some of the best rings we've had, no condiment needed! One helluva chilli cheese dog. I've been coming here for over 10 years. This is the spot to go to when your craving a chilli cheese dog.

It's not bad, but I expected way more from somewhere hailed as an Atlanta institution. Maybe the Kennesaw location is missing the magic mojo? Got the chili burger, chili cheese dog, and onion rings. They were all pretty small. The chili is a meat only chili, but it's quite processed and a bit thin. The burger otherwise is just a small, single patty. Not materially different than a single patty from McDonald's. The dog is small, with half a slice of american cheese and a line of mustard you can see but not taste. Neither are actively offensive, but feel more like school cafeteria than cult classic. The Onion Rings were the best thing by a mile, although most were more like Onion Straws since they failed to maintain their shape. Onion rings in general are good, and these delivered since they were fried a bit too long and they were particularly greasy and tasty. I had meant to try this place when I worked around it in downtown atlanta, and working here meant I got to try it. Honestly, I think I preferred it before I tried it, so the mystery and mythos could stay alive. read more

Ok, so I frequent In-N-Out and like Tommy's, both SoCal burger joints primarily. I happened to be in the Atlanta area so I thought I'd check this place out. Most of the locations have mixed reviews - seems like a love it or hate it type place. I'm more on the love it side. The chili burgers definitely have a unique flavor and are tasty. The onion rings and fries taste similar to those you'd find at a nicer sit-down restaurant. I'll definitely be back before my flight back home to San Diego and the next time I'm in Atlanta. read more

I can see why the varsity is so popular after trying it for the first time today. The food really gives you the nostalgia 90's diner feel and it's delicious. I was a little shocked of the size of the items, however. Looking at the size of the takeout box, I thought the items would be massive but my cheeseburger was the same size or even smaller than a whopper jr. I would say the items are "snack size". I guess that's how they were able to remain somewhat consistent with low prices over the years. You'd need about 2 burgers to fill you up which will be on par with regular fast food burger prices. I was brought here since my friends call this an Atlanta staple. It's like your average fast food place. Order at the counter and they place items on a tray for you immediately which is nice, but it can be lengthy if someone else who orders ahead of you has a long order. I ordered the chili cheese dog and onion rings. The chili cheese dog was what I expected-the bun was kind of soggy with the hot dog about to fall through. The onion rings have a nice breading that's crispy; my only complaint is that they do taste greasy however I can't expect much from a place this cheap. Delicious food, first time visiting while in Atlanta on business, tried the combo with a dog and burger, with onion rings. Added slaw to the dog, all was really tasty! I LOVE The Varsity. I've been a big fan since I was young. My father went to Georgia Tech which is near the original Varsity location in Atlanta. He enjoyed eating there during school and would take us there for dinner when I was growing up. We would always eat in our car. I loved that. I remember sitting in the back seat with my brother. I remember that place as always being busy and we could watch all the commotion while we ate. I am so glad that The Varsity has expanded. This location is conveniently located near Town Center Mall. This location is reminiscent of the original but they do not have car service. There is a drive through. The food is just as good at this location and it's the same drill at the counter when they yell "What'll ya have?!" as you step up.
