I came here for the first time recently with a group of people through Meetup and had a really nice dinner during restaurant week. I have not eaten a lot of Indian food and certainly not recently so I asked for recommendations. We got an order of pakodas for the table and shared them, and also in order of samosas. Both were delicious and the pakodas were incredibly unique, and lightly fried. One of the people at our table had the restaurant weeks prefix that included tomato soup and beetroot pattie, an entree, vegetables, rice, naan and dessert all for $45. The rest of us just ordered off the menu and I opted for the chicken curry with rice which was fantastic and also got a side order of the garlic naan. It was super garlicky but very tasty. The restaurant itself is small with maybe a half dozen tables inside and two or three tables outside but it was just enough for us that evening. Our servers were excellent and helped explain aspects of the menu and helped us make decisions on what we wanted to eat. The only reason for one less star is we were finished eating and the checks arrived, we were never offered the opportunity to get dessert which was really weird. We were all planning to at least consider dessert but ended up at another local establishment for dessert. This is my second time eat at The Verandah Kitchen, and this restaurant continues to impress me. This is definitely one of my favorite spots in the Baltimore area. I had the Kolhapuri Goat Curry & Gatlic this Naan bread, both of which are fantastic choices. The broth of the curry was nice and rich with a good level of spice, much of what a good curry should have. The goat itself had a bit more bones than I'd prefer, but overall even those were extremely tender & flavorful. Additionally I had used the Naan bread to help finish up the broth, which ended with a very satisfying comfort meal. The service & ambiance itself was also a pleasure. I personally prefer small establishments to avoid unnecessary noise while dining. Mix that with the incentive staff and you'll definitely enjoy yourself on your vist here, much like I did. read more

Hands down, my favorite Indian food in Baltimore is from here. The restaurant specializes in Indian small plates, and each one is a hit. I love going here because you can try things that are new or go with your classic favorites in entree form...or maybe do a little of both! We ordered Trini Doubles--one of my favorite bites, I loved the hint of sweetness Shaami Kabab--kabab specially made for a toothless king! This was our restaurant of choice for Baltimore Restaurant Week and it did NOT disappoint!! It's a small, cozy, intimate spot that really makes you feel like you're being let in on a special dining experience, making it perfect for date night. The service is solid and the servers are quick to refill waters and clear the table The food is the star of this review. Their Baltimore Restaurant Week menu was a 7 course (!!) meal that was truly an experience and absolutely worth the price. My favorites were the chicken cutlets, the sorbet, and the white chicken curry. Honorable mention to the side dishes because we got refills and they were so good. When we first arrived, the restaurant was pretty busy, but as it got closer to closing it became much less crowded, which made the experience even more enjoyable. This is a hidden gem dining experience in Hampden. I've already recommended it to friends and will definitely be back to try more items on the menu! read more

I was in the area to pick up and this spot popped up and thought it would be a good one to try for appetizers. Cozy interior with some outside seating. I was asked if I had a reservation when I walked in-I didn't and asked if I was out of luck. They did have some open tables but I was picking up. Quite around 5:30. Based on the friendly staff's recommendation, ordered Tikki Chaat, Mixed Veggie Pakodas and Trini Doubles. All 3 were Vegan and delicious with complex spices/flavors- the Pakodas are also Gluten free. If I had to choose a favorite it would be the Chaat-Potato Patties dipped in curried chutney with just the right amount of spicy. Service was exceptional with a high level of patience for answering my questions and providing recommendations. Picked up a bit by 6. Will be back for dinner. Ive gone twice to this place and the second time was Even better than the first. Started with a couple small plates, veg samosa, Lamb Vindaloo, salmon, Trini Doubles. ALL smashing; favorites were the Doubles and Salmon. Then an entree of Shrimp Kurma that was incredible all around, great shrimp, amazing curry, good portion and beautiful presentation. LASSI is also great always will recommend It's a row home converted into a restaurant so it's not the biggest, but they make good use of the space. I believe there's a patio as well. Absolutely delicious! When the weather is not super hot, sit out on the porch if you can. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about the food. It's not your typical Indian food restaurant. Take a chance and order some of the things that you don't normally see on other menus. Ask questions if you need to. The staff is knowledgeable and they will tell you about the region the dish comes from and what is in each menu item. Definitely part of Hampden's charming spots to dine. read more

What a cute little spot in the heart of Hampden! We stumbled across this place after googling Indian restaurants in the area and this one stood out. Now I know why! we went by for a Saturday lunch - the restaurant is small and cozy. They were a little short staffed that afternoon but managed to get us seated and served in a timely fashion. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Ambiance - the place is well decorated with cushions, paintings, and brightly coloured walls! Service - fantastic! We got to meet the owner of the place and she was able to make fantastic recommendations for us Food - I loved the tapas concept, which meant we got to try 4 or 5 different dishes. I also loved that she has kept the flavours authentic and not tried to dampen down the intensity of some of the traditional dishes. I felt like I was eating home cooked food! (if you are not a fan of richly flavoured, or spicy food, this may not be the place for you) They have a good selection of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes. I do believe they have some vegan options too. Prices - reasonable It is very rare to find an Indian restaurant that hasn't "Americanized" their dishes - Verandah kitchen is one of them. Back at Verandah for another delicious dinner! We pretty much ordered the same exact things again except this time, instead of the chicken meatball, we got the chicken kurma. The veggie pakoras were very yummy despite being a different selection of veggies this time around. It was more onions and less squash and sweet potato (or pumpkin?) than last time. Probably just due to seasonal availability. The chana masala was also delicious and very filling but much spicier than I remember. I love spicy food and can handle a bit of heat but this was definitely making my nose run! I loved the chicken kurma too and the soft potatoes it came with. A little disappointing they don't have a butter chicken on the menu but this was a nice option if you're craving something like that. We also tried the chilled red wine and we were pleasantly surprised with how refreshing it was. Service was friendly as always too. Always love the fact that I can come here and not be confused about allergens. A small, but mighty restaurant located in Hampden. The owner is very kind, and the servers are the same. If you are new to Indian cuisine, the menu gives a great explanation of the dishes and types of sauces used. The Goan Fish Fry and the Prawns of Ghee were my favorites and I absolutely recommend. There are a couple of tables outside, a bar that seats about 4 people, and maybe 6 other tables. It's a small spot, so I would recommend a reservation or calling ahead. read more

I had a really delicious meal here for winter restaurant week. As many times as I've walked by this place I had yet to order or stop in so restaurant week was a good opportunity to try something new. The space is small but really inviting. It feels like you're sitting in someone's home waiting for a dinner party to begin. The restaurant week special was a six course menu tasting. There were two selections one for omnivores and one for vegetarians. I selected the omnivore option. The tasting begin with the most luscious soup I've had in a long time, before moving on to a fried seafood shrimp dish with my favorite spicy green chutney. The next courses were curry chicken and keema paratha. Paratha is one of my favorite Indian foods and this one did not disappoint. The chicken curry was fine, but I actually enjoyed the curry tofu more; the flavors that were imparted, chef's kiss! The final savory course was a rice dish speckled with lentils and served with a side of ghee. To end our culinary journey we indulged in the perfect gulab jamun. Everything was truly wonderful! The chef/owner came out to ask how our meal was and we were so stuffed we could only smile and nod lol. Definitely coming back! read more

My friend and I went to the Verandah for dinner and had a great experience! We sat outside on the porch which was nice and shaded from the early evening summer sun. The menu was super descriptive and I appreciated the cultural context shared for various dishes. We split the Basket Chaat (crisp tortilla baskets loaded with spiced potatoes, red onions, chutney, and yogurt) which was delicious and the perfect way to start off our meal. For my main course, I got the Paneer Tikka Masala. I had never seen an Indian dish presented quite this way - it was really nicely plated! The food was super flavorful and a perfect portion size. Sometimes you get to a place with no planning and it turns out to be a total surprise and our recent dining experience at Verandah was exactly that. We came here to grab some early dinner apps during our recent visit to Baltimore. The place is small but modern, chic, and cute. There is also outdoor seating but we decided to sit indoors. I'm forgetting the owner's name but she was so courteous and nice and made our dining experience was very memorable. She was very accomodating and made sure we got comfortable, especially with our 10-month daughter getting used to the place :) This place is BYOB which is a plus, and we ordered Vada Pav, Paneer Malai Kofta, and Sabudana Vada. Everything was delicious with a perfect mix of flavors. We thoroughly enjoyed all the food and would come back to try more things off their menu. For Hampden, this is a nice restaurant. I wouldn't give it 4 stars, but it's a high 3 for sure. Not the best Indian food I've ever had (as it's more of a "fusion-style"), but, definitely not the worst. It's a restaurant in an old house so it's quaint and cozy inside and maybe good for a casual date but not super fancy. The service was probably the high point of the meal as it was relatively fast, friendly, and attentive. I would come back if in the area and looking for this style of Indian food, so give it a try and see what you think. read more

I stopped by Verandah Kitchen with my husband and mother in law for dinner last week, and I really enjoyed the meal. Verandah focuses on Indian small plates, so it's a great place for a meal if you want to share lots of small plates with friends or family. They do have larger plates on the back side of the menu if you don't want to share! We shared the Vada Paav (potato patty sliders - vegan), the Baingan Ka Bharta (fire-roasted, smoky mashed eggplants with onions and tomato - vegan), Tandoori Gobhi (roasted cauliflower sprinkled with toasted cumin, anchoor, and cilantro-garlic oil - vegan and gluten-free), Chicken Rista (minced chicken meatball pounded with cardamom and cumin and cooked in a spicy browned onion paste sauce - gluten-free and dairy-free), and the Lahori Salmon (salmon marinated and pan-seared and served with cilantro-garlic oil). We found the chicken meatball a little bit dry (it's hard for chicken meatballs not to be dry), but we really enjoyed the other plates a lot! We had a few glasses of wine as well. The service was good! And the restaurant is so charming - tiny and cozy (just a few tables inside and a few outsides)! Overall, it was a really good meal. One I'd be happy to repeat! The Verandah is one of my other favorite spots in Hampden. My go-tos are always a Mango Lassi and the vegetable pakoras. This quiet little spot is so charming and I always feel well taken care of when I come here. This place is definitely part of my regular rotations of restaurants and is a great back up if we can't decide on a spot. Visited The Verandah Kitchen in Hampden last weekend for MD Vegan Restaurant Week with a few friends. I had a strong hankering for chaat and when I saw that this restaurant was participating in Vegan Restaurant Week, I had to check it out! What an absolute gem of a place-- not just the location and the food, but also the exceptional customer service from Radhika and the rest of the team. She did her absolute best to make us feel welcome, accommodate our requests, and ensure our safety. We arrived right at opening (around 4 PM), which was perfect because no one was in yet! We opted to sit inside because the tables outside weren't large enough to seat our party of 5. This was my first time eating indoors since February of last year and I felt safe and comfortable, especially because no one else dined inside while we were there. When we left, we also had to fill out a sheet with our contact information as part of Baltimore's contact tracing program. All other safety precautions were followed (staff wore masks at all times, contactless menu options, limited capacity). Well back to talking about the good stuff...the food! With so many mouthwatering options to choose from (and vegan too!), it took me a hot minute to decide. I finally settled on sabudana vada, samosa chaat, and chai. My fellow vegan diner and I asked for a milk alternative and we were pleasantly surprised that they offered soy milk! This restaurant is BYOB and my friends brought a bottle of white wine to accompany the Indian food. Radhika was kind enough to get us some wine glasses. The sabudana vada was not at all oily as I had expected and it came with a delicious green chutney. The samosa chaat was flavorful and I enjoyed it, but my only wish was for it to be spicier! The soy milk chai was surprisingly delightful; as someone who rarely drinks soy milk (oat milk all the way, woot woot!), I found that the true chai flavor still shone through. I thoroughly appreciated the variety of flavors that were a part of my weekend chaat excursion. Thank you to The Verandah Kitchen! After wanting to order forever (and just not getting around to it), we finally got delivery for dinner tonight. We ordered samosas, tikki chaat, garlic naan and paneer tikka masala through the Yelp app and had our order in no time at all! (we also ordered early, so I'm guessing we beat any dinner rush!) The food all arrived warm and I was so thankful they noticed my "no plastic utensils please" note - with all this takeout our junk drawer is overflowing! Contactless delivery was perfect - they knocked and made a quick exit and my food was right next to the door. For the food, we really liked the samosas! Vegan, crispy, sweet. The cups of sauce they come with are very tiny, so it was more of a pour than a dunk situation (I love spice so I went straight for the spicy sauce while my wife liked the sweet one!). This was my first time trying tikka chaat so I'm not sure if they're always a bit crumbly, they were tasty but it made them a little trickier to eat. And finally, the tikka masala was solid. Good amount of rice, the paneer was plentiful, and there is definitely enough sauce to go around. I like a lot of flavor, so I did end up adding the extra spicy sauce to mine to give it a little more pizazz. The garlic naan was a $2.50 add on to the entrée, turns out I didn't actually need it to add to the meal, so in the future I'll skip the extra expense. All in all, it was a solid delivery dinner that I'm sure we'll have again! read more

This is a cute restaurant in one of my favorite neighborhoods in Baltimore. It was my partners first time eating Indian food. We got a lot of different things to try. The food was fantastic. The staff was very hospitable. We came in close to closing time and they graciously welcomed us in. The offerings are delicious with something for meat eaters, vegetarians, and vegans. This place was totally unsatisfying! I ordered saag paneer and it was completely runny, more like a gazpacho soup than a saag. I eat this ALL the time, it's my go to Indian cuisine and this was hands down the WORST saag I've ever eaten, in flavor and texture. One of our favorite places to eat! Even the carry out is absolutely amazing. We love to go and order a bunch of the small plates... I especially love all the vegetarian dishes they offer. I was in Hamden last week and came across The Verandah as they were opening for the day. What a wonderful experience. The service was excellent. We sat outside and our server, Oil, was so friendly and welcoming. The food was amazing. We ordered 3 small plates (samosa chaat, chicken malai kabob, and for the third plate we asked Oil to choose, and she brought a delicious lightly fried fish) for the two of us, along with garlic naan, and left completely satisfied (and then some!).
