We stopped for a "quick" lunch. They were short staffed so not quick today. But if the meal had been great, I wouldn't be writing this review. My husband had their quiche of the day which was overcooked and virtually tasteless. His potato salad was subpar. My tomato/mozzarella/pesto sandwich on focaccia was mostly bread. Without us complaining they told us prior to our meal being delivered that they were discounting it due to it taking so long. We did purchase some baked goods to take home and they were great. We went there because we had been given a gift certificate. We wish we had just used it on bakery items. The wait staff were very nice. This is a wonderful local restaurant and bakery. Don't miss their cranberry walnut bread from the bakery; it is an option on the menu items that include bread. The monte cristo was fabulous. This bakery/cafe is a gem...goodies from the bakery side of the shop are so fresh and absolutely yummy... I especially enjoy their raspberry pinch cookies and their pastries.. on the cafe side of the shop I've eaten both salads and sandwiches and always enjoy what I have ordered.. [This review is based on Breakfast & bakery only] This has been a fun little find in historic Pendleton. I came here first at the invite of a friend to meet up and get breakfast. I was impressed with the meals and what they offered for breakfast. It was creative and delicious (which is saying something for this part of the upstate!). I had a raisin French toast on challah bread with real maple syrup and sausage for $6. The breakfast was filling and once I started eating I couldn't believe they were only charging $6 for a meal so good! Their scramble (for only $5) is also another delicious breakfast item that is unique to their restaurant and very good. The bakery has an array of fresh pastries and breads available for purchase everyday. They bake their items each day, and you can tell they take pride in what they offer. The other thing too is that the staff here are all awesome. You can tell they care about their customers as they're on a first-name basis with many of them, and it has that "small, hometown feel" you would expect. Have eaten here twice. On Sunday it is buffet only. Very expensive for the quality of food that is provided. Food was okay but not great. People on that day were pleasant. Our ticket for 2 for buffet with coffee, OJ and a normal tip was in the low $60 range. It needs to be pretty for that. Second visit we arrive at 10:45am. Breakfast is stopped being served from the menu at 10:45. We were ordering 10:48 am. No exception, though we saw breakfast bing delivered for the next 15 minutes. Lunch menu was weak and again the food quality not great. Egg salad sandwich was average and tank pesto order by my wife was not edible. We payed the full bill with tip as sever was a college girl. But make her aware of the food issues and seemed like she would tell the kitchen. We rarely leave reviews good or bad, but thought it might help the next person looking to go here. We do not intend to return as there are better places nearby. We have had several meals at the breakfast place -Sunnyside and we will go back to there or even Waffle House to have breakfast in the future. read more

Can't beat a local bakery. Breads, bagels, pastries, cakes, cookies and more. Great if you don't want to go to the full restaurant next door. They serve coffee, tea, and soda. A few tables available, also some outside tables. If I had a complaint, it's that some of the pastries are too chewy. If I had to guess, they use the same high protein flour in them that they use in the bread. Still worth the trip. read more

Yep yep and yep!!!! The food, the environment and the staff are all exceptionally wonderful! We were greeted with kindness, the "everyone is family" mentality was in the air. The menu was filled with a good variety but it wasn't 10 pages wide. We ordered the blueberry pancake, crispy bacon, biscuits and country gravy that comes with an order of grits and and an egg-cooked to order. The grits were off the charts great! The blueberry pancakes were light but filling! The cat-eye biscuits were large and very tasty. The portions were spot on. You come away satisfied but not stuffed. In fact you may find (like we did) that you can go over to the bakery to collect some baked goods to take home. All of the food and baked goods are fresh. And the friendly staff I mentioned earlier include a lovely soul named Jordanny (sp?). She is full of kind words and a touch of sass that worked well with my husbands personality. Very disappointed with my recent experience here. We ordered a cake for a Girl's birthday party. First they messed up the order making a smaller cake than ordered. Then the cake itself was just ugly, brown with brown writing!!! How is that appropriate for a girl's party? We also think it was one from the case and not made fresh. This was what we saw in the case when we ordered several days prior and it tasted stale. We had stopped going here because of bad experiences in the past but had heard it was under new ownership. For that reason we gave it another chance but that will be our last. read more

The buffet was $18.75.. for cold food(at opening) and soup that was pasta sauce. There was a very small selection of food especially since they claim to be gluten free friendly. This is an awesome little bakeshop humbly tucked away downtown. I stopped here for a quick coffee, but ended up staying longer and enjoying some of their delicious pastries. The Place Pendleton, South Carolina has one of the largest National Historic Districts in the country. Pendleton's "Main" Street: The Village Green is anchored by the Farmers' Society Hall and shops like The Village Bakery & Cafe. The bakery is quaint and nostalgic with excellent offerings and the cafe has adequate seating and many different sized tables. The Menu/Food We stopped by for lunch on a Friday. There were at least 15 sandwiches to choose from on the menu. I chose the Reuben - Corned​ beef and sauerkraut on hearty rye. The Reuben and fries were both very good and the portion size just right. Overall our eating experience was excellent. We enjoyed the Sunday brunch. It was highly recommended by all and didn't disappoint. A Mediterranean theme with plenty of healthy choices and even more sweet tooth choices for dessert. The Service/Value The prices were fair for the value presented. Our server was brand new but did a good job. The only reason we new she was new... she told us. The manager and staff were all friendly. Nice small town place to eat. I was looking for a restaurant that served lunch on Sunday before taking my niece to Ashtabula and Woodburn historic houses. She was visiting from New York and I wanted to take her somewhere that served the good food of S.C. They had Sunday brunch. It was served buffet style. I was a bit taken aback with the price. It was $15.95 per person. The food served was not worth that price. They served fried cauliflower, stuffed chicken, meatloaf, macaroni and cheese, pasta salad, shrimp and grits and a few pastries. We searched for a brunch place that could accommodate a large party yesterday and were overwhelmed with the amazing service and delicious food here, enough that we returned for brunch today and were once again blown away. Village Bakery was my first Sunday brunch buffet in South Carolina; they seem to abound in Texas... but out in the slower parts, these eateries are hard to come by. I just thought it was just going to offer a limited menu with a few brunch items and baked goods, but I was really excited to hear "all you can eat" when I walked in; I waited all morning to dine here. The crowd picked up really fast; 20 minutes after they opened, the line was already baked up at the buffet. The spread was fairly limited, and the $13 price tag was one of the highest that I have had for a meal not in Greenville. After seeing that it was over $10, I figured that the baked goods are probably a better sampling of what they have to offer, value-wise. The Sunday brunch may just be to appeal to those uppity diners. Breakfast: The scrambled eggs, sausage, and bacon all looked very dull, so I did not touch them. They provide 6 choices of bread; my favorites were the cheddar/jalapeno white and the green onion (?) baked thing? Proteins: The Sicilian chicken was fairly standard with chunky tomatoes and veggies keeping the meat tender; definitely could have used more seasoning. The schnitzel was dry and bland, and the crust was so-so. Veggies: The collard greens had good flavor: not too salty, and slightly sweet and bitter. The VB caprese salad was mediocre; a bit soggy. Starch: The bread pudding was good. It was moist, it had a slight crust, and the blueberries were a good match. The hashbrown and ham casserole was my favorite. It was creamy, cheesy, and it had a great crust. Dessert: Awesome dessert selection. Here is where VB excels. The peach and custard baked thing was awesome. The crust was a tad soggy, but it was near perfect as a whole; the flavor was spot on. The blueberry pie was somewhat boring, but the mountain of fresh blueberries made it worth it. The jam was smooth and the crust was good and crisp. This place is highly recommended, but do not expect anything extraordinary. Just the sensational aroma of all that FRESH BAKED pastry was almost enough to send me into euphoria but then to see the mind-bending selections .... OMG!!! I am moving out state, so today will probably be the last time I get to eat here. Just want to thank the team for providing a true french bakery experience and great customer service too! Until I ate here, I didn't realize how fake the baked goods taste when I buy them at the chain grocery stores. Now I can never buy crappy Bi Lo or Publix bakery foods again! What am I going to do when I move next week?? The baked goods, quiche, and brunch here are REAL food. When was the last time you went to a bakery and the apple fritter pastries had REAL cut up apples? At a Clemson University party recently, a tray of their cookies was literally the talk of the party. I kept going back to the tray for one more cookie and every time, someone asked me where they were from. Today, a delightful server was so friendly to the woman picking up pastries that it literally warmed my heart. He was talking to her about the importance of providing food and service "with a flourish" and he seemed very happy to be working there and was super welcoming to the customers. He wasn't faking good customer service. He was truly welcoming and happy. That's very rare at stores these days, where service providers are mostly pretending to be friendly rather than truly making a connection with their clientele. Well done, guys. Even though we were outside I was disappointed that the waitress didn't wear a mask and definitely wasn't social distancing. She went back and forth between inside and outside and between customers. So I picked up my bread and bialys.. (instead of going there first I did my shopping in Anderson and went there on my way back to West Union-mistake!!!) they smelled delicious and wanted a 7 or 9 grain to go along with, but, good for them unfortunately not for me the were all out. We ventured into the Cafe for lunch and left applauding, full and happy for the great find. I had the cold plate, which consisted of a scoop of egg salad, pimento cheese, chicken salad and pasta salad with a side of crostini's --YASSS!!! Great choice if you want to taste all the goodies. My husband had the hamburger and delicious French fries and my friend had the chicken salad sandwich with APPLE SLAW! Who Does That?! It had cranberries and pecans with apple cider vinegar. Totally Delicious per my friend. But the BOMB, the WINNER-TAKES-ALL, the JAW DROPPER was the Monte Cristo made with fresh bread from the bakery next door, blackberry jam, ham, cheese and powdered sugar! The sandwich was a mile high. The bread was warm, soft and buttery. It literally made tears of joy spring to your eyes and drool flow freely. Definitely worth going to. First, don't go in a hurry on a Sunday morning. Around Clemson, there are few places to eat a good Sunday Brunch. For that reason, expect a wait. Second, the service was slow and the hostess was somewhat short. But, she was the hostess and busperson. So, I am cutting her slack on that. We had to wait too long for our check (with a line out the door of people waiting for tables). My suggestion- hire additional staff on a Sunday morning! Third, the food was really good, especially the pastries. I especially enjoyed the variety. From shrimp and grits to meatballs or maybe some babaganoush, the main course was varied and tasty. But make no mistake, the pastries are what you should come for. We loved the Italian Cream Cake, shortbread pastries with two different fillings, cinnamon puff pastries, baklava, and the macaroon that was like eating a Mounds. The Village Baker is our favorite bakery when visiting Clemson, SC. We go there just before we gather at tailgate to pick up our tailgate contribution which our friends LOVE!!! The most notable are the luscious almond sticks either with or without chocolate, truly to die for. Our friends also look forward to the great muffins and mouth watering chocolate ganache cake. I've been coming in here weekly for bread and pastries for a few years now. I always pick up a loaf of 9 grain for sandwiches. Baguettes, other breads, bagels and pastries are also all delicious. Part of the bakery next door, but unlike the bakery, has consistently neglectful service and staff that have an "I'm way too busy to bother with you" attitude, even on slow mornings.
