Cute little bakery in town with great upfront parking. We ate outside under the gazebo. We tried the Boston cream filled with Nutella and we also got six apple cider donuts. The apple cider donuts were nice and crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. The Nutella filling on the donut was plenty with a very creamy chocolate Dip on top. After a visit to the Whistle Stop, I scoped out this nearby bakery. I was intrigued by the size of their Almond Croissant. It probably weighed nearly 3 lbs. I sampled the 2 tips and the filling is delicious. I enjoyed the rest, at the end of the day. Unfortunately I don't find my way up here too often, but if I do, I'll explore more of their treats. My husband and daughter grabbed some doughnuts this morning and said it was very cute inside. As a doughnut snob this place was outstanding! We grabbed the vanilla sprinkle cake, chocolate frosted yeast, almond croissant, and cinnamon roll. The doughnuts were perfectly crisp on the outside and soft and light on the inside, plus no weird after taste! Thank you for a new local doughnut shop, we will be back again soon! read more

I guess I shouldn't have assumed the products would be the same under new ownership, but I was super disappointed that the coffee cake is no longer good. It was filled with what tasted like bad canned fruit pie filling, even the texture of the pastry was no longer as tender, no topping, crumb, powdered sugar, or icing, just filling and braided pastry. Would have preferred Entenmann's to be honest. Less importantly, the storefront remodel looks unfinished with all the empty areas, like where tables used to sit at the front. Although lighter and brighter, it is much less welcoming with no displays or furnishings to fill the empty spaces. Staff is very nice, and maybe there are menu items that are better, but unfortunately this is not the same place. read more

The bear claw was my absolute favorite! Unfortunately, with the new owners it is have the size with about a quarter of the almond paste. We bought a variety of items for weekend guests. Everything was dry, especially the yeast doughnuts and the frosting was dry and thin. I wish the old owners well and I will remember the quality and quanty of all their fresh baked items. We went on a Saturday afternoon to get some birthday treats for my wife. The first thing I noticed on waking in was the odd odor, not the fresh baked goods typical with bakeries. There was one lady working behind the counter and she seemed to not be very happy to be there. The bakery items themselves were mostly good, we got a few doughnuts, some cookies, and a few cake slices. The doughnuts and cookies were pretty good, the cake slices however were stale and dry. I tried the baked goods at the "new" Village Bakery in Fox Lake. I was disappointed at best as the selections on the single counter display, only had a couple of each items they made that day, certainly not the variety a normal bakery would have. They were visually appealing but lacked taste. It seems like they may have used the same dough for their danishes as their long John's. The chocolate croissant was decent. When I asked if they sold coffee cakes the response was yes, but apparently they didn't have any that day. I was told I could go on the website to make a special order but the site is not up yet. I asked the price of their coffee cakes and packaged cookies and the person who said they were the general manager had no idea whatsoever and said to go on line.Hopefully they will get their act together and offer the variety most folks are accustomed to when you visit a bakery. One of my true loves is bakery items. I have been to many Chicago bakeries and many in northeast Illinois and Wisconsin. I have been to Village bakeries several times. Their almond crescents are the best any where you go. So tasty and so big they need to be shared. They make really good Polish Paczki which you may be familiar with in German bakeries as a Bismarck. The owners are friendly and the items are fresh. Sometimes I buy too many so they have to last for two days. You also will find the best cheese danish in the area. Don't forget some kolaczki.
