We visited on a Friday night without a reservation and were able to get seated pretty immediately. Loved this speak easy, and it truly is pretty 'hidden' unless you know where the door is. We had started downstairs in their sister bar, Hand In Glove / The Free Bar for a round and decided to try our luck here. We were seated at a two-top, but it would have been so fun to sit at the bar. There are really only a handful of tables here, and it's a cozy vibe. Tables were generally full the entire time we were there, and it seemed like several guests were regulars. The night we went the bar menu had a 90s TV show/movie theme. It was fun reading the drinks names and guessing what movie or show they were from. I can't remember what my husband ordered, but it was a spiced pear old-fashioned. More whiskey/bourbon forward but defintiely his type of drink! I had one called "You Killed Kenny.. We came here after visiting Hand in Glove. Ask for the number. This is a cute upstairs speakeasy! Not easy to find but tip...go to hand in glove and then you will be very close (mysterious!) Our mixologist was Jed! He was great. After I my first drink we walked us through the Italian bitters they have and then i asked him to make me something, anything, using a variety of the bitters which I believe are called barrows . We had such a great time! Our bartender, Adriana, was super fun and made fabulous drinks. We really enjoyed everything, but our favorite was the dry orange curaçao and vodka drink. No menu, we just told Adriana a drink profile and a liquor, and she went to town. This was SO fun- my stepdad ordered a drink that was pink, and She went to town with this cinnamon, coconut, smoked concoction that we tossed around names for throughout the evening. Being surprised was half the fun. I think this is one of those places that is different every time you go. Definitely pricey- we got six drinks and a soda, and spent over $100 plus tip. Getting in can be a thing- you have to text a number and make a reservation, then be buzzed in at the door. This is it... heaven... right here at 6 & 1/2 This fantastic little bar makes custom cocktails with hand made syrups... they even infuse a number of their cocktails with smoke (yes smoke), as well as valorous herbs and amazing flavours. The drinks are all custom creations by experienced bartenders. In this speakeasy old style bar you will order the type of drink you want and even which brand/flavor of booze to be added for maximum affect. My go to is the Smoked Vanilla Rye Old Fashioned... those of you that have read my other reviews... are not surprised! This place does require reservations and it small so no really large groups. Unquestionably the best cocktail bar in Kansas City area. The bartender has managed some of the area's other premiere cocktail bars, and is arguably the best mixoligist in town. He designs a multi-page menu of some of the most complex and outstanding drinks. And if you have tried all those (or not), you can also let him know what you like, and he will make you something better than anything you have ever tried before. And if you are up for it, he will also challenge you with something different, perhaps with a spirit you order less, but it will still be amazing. One downside is that The W is only open 3 nights a week, but the upside to that is that Brock is always there. The other major downside is that once you have had cocktails here, if you are someone who demands a good cocktail when dining out, you will start to despise some of even the best restaurants in town for their inability to make a quality drink (by your now raised standards). read more

This place was amazing. First of all it felt like a true speakeasy from beginning to end. You have to make a reservation and be buzzed in at the door. Unmarked door, no sign, just 6 1/2. You could tell the bartenders and server really liked their jobs and wanted you to enjoy the experience. Now for the drinks. I was a bartender for 10 years and I can tell you it's hard to find a true "mixologist" these days. Everything is premixed or comes from a bag in a box. These guys go beyond mixologist and make mixing drinks a true science. The drinks are about $15 each but trust me when I tell you they are worth it. We will definitely be back. read more

The rudest service I may have ever had! We decided on an impromptu group outing at The W. We were able to get reservations easily on a Saturday early evening at the bar. Was a little surprised being that it was a "speakeasy" the bartenders were dressed casually. When we placed our orders, us wives were still pondering, so the guys ordered and they were told "You always make it a habit of ordering before women" RUDE! We powered through and ordered. Drinks were good so we ordered another round. I held up my glass to get another and the same bartender asked "what's that supposed to mean" RUDE! I said I'll take another. Was then told "you still have shit in that one" ...again...RUDE!! Such a shame, it used to be an awesome experience and sitting at the bar was a hard seat to get. Not this time! Evidently we aren't the only ones who realize that it's just not the same as it was even a few years ago. read more

A large group (8 or 10?) at two tables pushed together was loud and had to get louder over the music. Service was indifferent and felt a little rushed/pushed to order the next round. My husband has a severe alcohol allergy (the irony...) and they custom made him a Vanilla Smoke without alcohol. Both drinks were incredibly flavorful and not overly sweet. And, no, I won't tell you mine, because yes, it's phenomenal. ; ) I tried the Four Sticks and the Cascadia. The Cascadia was my favorite-with, gin and well, the essence of Douglas Fir somehow... And a pine overtones in the sugar rim? Crazy creative and pleasing. The presentation is great too; served on a small glass tray with white pine needles (I think) a carefully paired chocolate truffle and a small stick of burning incense. Four Sticks has a rum base and had an apple cider-like flavor. I am told the Wraith Sazarac, made with Kansas City Whiskey, was amazing. My sister, a writer, gave it the highest compliment possible when she proclaimed it a drink that Hemmingway (yes, THAT Hemmingway) would have loved. read more

Not a huge fan of the recent speakeasy trend. I like to be able to "research" a bar or restaurant before I visit. Seems kind of exclusive, which some maybe most people, would like, but not really my style. Uppity may better describe the feel. It is dark and intimate inside, not very big at all. We were sat at a table under and AC unit that was dripping water on the table the whole time we were there. The drinks are high quality, as they should be for the price, but I didn't care for mine. I would like to go back and try something different, but it's hard to get in and expensive, so not a place I would frequent. read more
