I have started to buy a few watches the past couple years and have a pretty decent collection. Some of my watches are upper end but the majority are middle of the road ($350-$950) price point. The past few, I have taken to The Watch Repair Guy inside of Bill's Ace Hardware in Martinez. The name is a bit of a misnomer since the watch repair "guy" is actually this super nice lady named Glenda! I guess her husband runs their other location which I believe is in another Ace maybe? Anywho, I've only had Glenda do sizing and battery changing so far but she has been great and she only charges like $10 to size your watch. I'll post an update when I need something more intense done like a repair.

I recently moved to the area and didn't want to drive the distance to where I used to go to. Thus began my search. After reading all the glowing Yelp and Google reviews, I'll admit that I wondered how true they could all be. But I too received 5 star service from The Watch Guy. Albeit, I was helped by a delightful woman at the counter. Extremely helpful, knowledgeable and fast. I was even more impressed and pleased than I ever was at the place that I used to go to. Very glad that I chose here for the help I needed. I will not go anywhere else in the future, and if I move again I will happily drive the distance to return here. 5 stars... Absolutely, THIS is how service is supposed to be! This is also why I use Yelp to help decide where I go and spend my hard earned money.

Very nice woman. Gave me options and prices. Very reasonable and was able to Do the repair to my FOSSIL watch on the spot. Very happy with the repair guy that was a nice gal. It is inside the Ace hardware store.

I want to echo the negative reviews. I've been coming here for several years, I've bought wall…read moreclocks from him as well two floor clocks and had floor and many wall clocks serviced by Joe, and on more than one occasion I've dealt with Joe's attitude. He seems entitled and tell you what he thinks is a fair price. Really? The last time was the last time. I'd left the mechanical guts of a clock with him to be repaired while the chassis was being fixed by a woodcraftsman. This was the poor victim of a shipping fiasco by someone who had no business selling clocks. At the same time I "sold" two wall clocks to Joe that in exchange he would credit $100 toward the repair of the clock in question. Well, after several months, the woodcraftsman could not get around to repairing the chassis due to illness so I told Joe to toss the mechanical guts. He indicated they were really beyond repair anyway. Because the first clock could not be fixed due to the aforementioned woodcraftsman, I bought another and asked Joe to tune it up. At the same time, I brought in another clock and asked if he was interested in it. At first he offered $50, then $75. I told him no and left, but he followed me to my car and then offered $100 toward the second repair. I accepted it only because I knew he already owed me $100 toward the first repair which never happened. So I'd get $200 off the repair of the second clock. But on the claim tag, he noted only the price minus $100, which I planned to bring up with him when I came to pick up the second clock. Well, to my surprise, he could not remember the other two clocks I'd left with him. He asked where were they and I said they were in his possession, how would I know where he put them? Then when I described them and he suddenly remembered, he made a comment about not charging me storage fees for the first clock he'd held onto while I was waiting for the chassis to be repaired implying as if him dismissing the other $100 he owed me would be in exchange for the storage fees. Really? I explained to him it was not my fault the woodcraftsman could not repair the chassis of the first clock and insisted he credit $200 toward the repair, which he declined and argued with he and made some comment about me quibbling over $100. Really? He had three clocks of mine that were worth much more than $200, and yet I let him have them because I knew he'd either fix them and send them to a new home or use them for parts. He had the nerve to insist that the first $100 credit could only be put toward the repair of the first clock. Really? So, I asked him to give me back the two clocks that I'd left with him previously. He no longer had them. He had no response, other than to honor the first $100 credit, but rescind his offer on the additional $100 and give me the third clock back in spite. I left with him shaking his head in disgust and reprimanding me? Really? What the heck is this guy's problem? As others have noted, he seems perpetually angry. And greedy! And when I questioned the repair of the second clock because the pendulum bob was sitting too high in the cabinet and there was too much thread of the rod exposed, he told me I should worry about more important things. Really? Who the heck does this guy think he is talking to customers like this? Instead, stop taking the cheaper and lazy route and fix the clock as it was meant to be fixed with the pendulum bob sitting in the right position. He charged me several hundred dollars for this shoddy repair! Disgraceful! If anyone should be disgusted, it is me. His customer service is deplorable. He gets too personal and treats you like a child. Shame on you, Joe! I'll be taking my business elsewhere from now on!

I really liked that this is a local family business with an honest and friendly approach. I know what I am talking about because last time we went to another place near home for the same work on another watch and it was more expensive with worse service and quality. That is why I would rather drive ten minutes here and get the job done right.

Unfortunately, Jomashop's so-called 2-year warranty was a complete joke--way too many exclusions to be useful. Based on this experience, I would never buy a watch from Jomashop again. I took the watch to a large jeweler/watch store in Walnut Creek and was quoted $600, which felt like a total ripoff. Thankfully, I found Richard through Yelp--and what a blessing that turned out to be. He is incredibly friendly, professional, and clearly knows his craft. He took the watch apart and walked me through each component, even showing me the exact part that was broken. That level of transparency really gave me confidence. It took about a week to get my watch back since he had to order the part, but the pricing was very reasonable, and I honestly feel like I got a great deal. On top of that, he even removed a link from my other watch for free. I can confidently say I've found my watchmaker. Highly recommend Richard to anyone looking for honest, skilled, and fair watch repair.
